Matthews: Religious right in US most like … the Taliban

posted at 8:48 am on October 23, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

That must be from all of the times the Religious Right throws acid in women’s faces, or bars girls from attending schools, or beat barbers in the streets for trimming beards. Right? Because when the Religious Right set up their dictatorship in America, they were just like the Taliban, according to Chris Matthews. Why Frank Gaffney even bothered to appear on MS-NBC in the first place is anyone’s guess:

Maybe the Taliban is the new Godwin’s Law in American politics — the example (unfortunately contemporaneous rather than historical) onto which weak intellects fall when they can’t actually make an argument. How exactly are the religious Right like the Taliban, even in Matthews’ fevered mind? Well, they’re both religious, and they’re both politically active — if one equates engaging in the democratic process here in America with stonings, shari’a law, and terrorist attacks on civilians elsewhere.

To Matthews’ first point, the Afghans just did hold an election, and Hamid Karzai — who has desperately requested that NATO keep fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan — won a plurality. No candidate who even suggested a truce came close. Maybe if MS-NBC was an actual news channel, Matthews would already know that.

Everything about Chris Matthews can be explained by dwelling into the psychology of a 13 year old girl.

Thirteen year old girls eventually grow up (thank you, God).
What’s Matthews excuse?

Only time I was impressed by Ron Reagan was at his Dad’s funeral. All other times including this one he has been a horses ass.

Hummer53 on October 23, 2009 at 10:26 AM

UGH! Can’t stand that little dork, Ron Reagan. It it weren’t for his dad’ name he would be totally irrelevant. Just like what the left did in the 80′s who paraded Patti Davis up front against her Dad, now they parade jr. the empty suit.

President Reagan was a world changer. Jr. is nothing alike but just another leftist.

Hummer53 on October 23, 2009 at 10:26 AM

Well, I got pissed when he said his dad didn’t “wear religion cuff-links” WTF? He was poking fun at Bush over that statement and he just had to use the pulpit of his great father’s funeral to spit it out.

Way to go jr.

b1jetmech on October 23, 2009 at 10:34 AM

The religious right has left fruit baskets at my door and actually knocked on my door in a violent effort to convert me to their radical interpretation of Christianity. Oh, and they dragged my wife to the soccer stadium and put a bullet in the back of her head for showing too much ankle when I forgot to take her to the market, a violation of Christian law known as “the path leading to water.”

Not hard to figure out the BS part of that is it?

Beagle on October 23, 2009 at 10:34 AM

Yes! As an atheist I tremble with fear morning, noon, and night as I encounter the militant Taliban-like Christian conservatives in my family, neighborhood, and work place. Not!

Mathews is as stupid as stupid gets.

Gang-of-One on October 23, 2009 at 10:42 AM

Why is Matthews still running around loose without a keeper?

hachiban on October 23, 2009 at 10:52 AM

Don’t know if anyone’s commented on this yet but…

…anyone catch Gaffney’s comment to RR jr. at the end?

“You’re father would be ashamed of you”

aquaviva on October 23, 2009 at 11:12 AM

Many militant anti-theists — even the libertarian ones — join Matthews in this attack, although perhaps less stupidly. They don’t seem to recognize that tearing down Christianity or Judaism is a necessity to imposing fascism or communism, and by joining in the attack they are helping to destroy their own freedom.

Christian Conservative on October 23, 2009 at 11:36 AM

I think most leftists feel that way–even the religious ones. They tend to see conservative evangelical Christians as backwards knuckle draggers. They don’t understand the millions of works of compassion Christians do on a daily basis, among the broken-hearted, the poor and the sick (which includes those suffering from AIDS/HIV). It’s not just all about the unborn.

In the long run I don’t think the left would much like the world they created if they ever got rid of all evangelical Christians, but they have to have someone to demonize. Heaven knows they can’t accept the responsibility for the mess we’re in for themselves.

faraway on October 23, 2009 at 11:55 AM

I find it telling, and even more disgusting, that those on the left have no problem invoking God into their arguments, and calling on men of the cloth from religions, to sway opinions on their crappy health care bills, then turn around and accuse those faithful, of being like an oppressive, radical regime, whom just a few weeks ago, deemed not dangerous, and an ally?

Sick!!!

capejasmine on October 23, 2009 at 11:55 AM

Religious right in US most like … the Taliban

Which is strange because it is this administration who wants to negotiate with them (which happens to be more hospitable to their handling of their domestic political adversaries). It is the left (mostly) who wants to leave Afghanistan thus ceding territory and control back to the Taliban.

I imagine, if it were possible to do such, that a complete poll would indicate that it is the vast majority of the religious right who want to defeat the Taliban. I have my doubts if the left would even poll a plurality.

anuts on October 23, 2009 at 11:56 AM

Wow! Those libs are totally nuts! I don’t understand why Matthews bothered to have someone on with an opposing viewpoint… so he could ask a question and then he and the other guest could get off on shouting him down? What the hell was the point of all that?

Should stop all threads related to this poor excuse for a man, let alone reporter. This is his only way of staying in the public eye because his show is a farce. He’ll never be able to live down the “tingle”. Ignore him and maybe he will fade away.

I remember the US sending expensive tractors to Africa in the 80s… they ended up in Europe… sold and the money pocketed by dictators.

mankai on October 23, 2009 at 9:14 AM

Actually he is not a fool, and I don’t think you hated to state that. Since it is pretty obvious that Rev. Graham is not a fool, except to someone like you.
This is the third or fourth visit to the hospital, and each time they had made improvements, and the items weren’t “sold”. The generators, and equiptment are implanted into the hospital, quite complex, and would probably cost more to move.
This is a generous move, by a Christian man who wants to save lives…wherever the lives are.
He is one of the few allowed, because of his humanitarian life, is accepted with grace by these countries.
But I guess you missed the real point…Christians build, Taliban destroy…sorry you didn’t catch the analogy.
Next time I will not use as many big words…
*
So here is a question for you non-believers…what organization has been asked to “referee” some of the most critical and sensitive peace talks in the world…often in the middle-east. This one organization has overseen more delicate peace negotiations then any other including the U.N. And often between non-Christian countries, and certainly non-Christian leaders?
I bet Chris wouldn’t know that answer…for over 75 years, this organization has been in the forefront of delicate, peace negotiations, when all others have failed or were refused….Name that organization…

Comparing the religious right to the Taliban is nothing new, lib blogs have been doing it for years. It’s especially popular with the homosexual crowd.

The “Religious Right” in America

…made sure that religious liberty was included in our Constitution.

…fought to end slavery in America.

…fought to give women the vote and make sure they could get an education.

…fought for civil rights for all.

…founded schools and service organizations that help people throughout the world, even people who hate us.

And every step of the way, Statists like Matthews have called us names and tried to stop us.

clearbluesky on October 23, 2009 at 1:22 PM

Hmph. If the Religious Right in America were anything like the Taliban, there would be no such thing as a “homosexual crowd” in America.

29Victor on October 23, 2009 at 1:45 PM

His dad WOULD be ashamed of him, as the decision to fight in Afganistan was always to root out terrorists, and the Taliban ruled the country. Little Ron doesn’t seem to grasp that this exactly means regime change away from the Taliban, but then, little Ron never did exactly ring the bell for genius…

Note Matthews, typical of someone exploiting the power of the media, smiles widely over successfully getting two parties to fight. I note Allahpundit has done this many times on Hot-Air trying to get the religious vs. God-hating contributors to fight each other, often successfully. I can’t tell you how that kind of thing sickens me, as such activity invariably does more harm than good, either on TV or on Hot-Air. Sorry if I used Matthews here for a teachable moment…

There is some truth to what Chrissy says. About 1/2 of our socons are Christian Democrats. i.e, socialists. Huckabee?

So you have to ask yourself:

Do Republicans support drug prohibition because it finances criminals or because it finances terrorists?

Republicans love socialism. Moral socialism. Of course Democrats love economic socialism.

We do have a choice of socialisms. Isn’t freedom wonderful?

MSimon on October 23, 2009 at 4:01 PM

This memorandum from Media Matters is disgusting.

These folks are clearly no friend of the 1st amendment.

With a few minor changes, this could have been written by the Taliban.

J_Crater on October 23, 2009 at 4:10 PM

Snicker. Just when you thought the trolls had come up with everything, now we have MSimon postulating that Christian Republicans are “moral socialists.” (Cue Twilight Zone music.)

Economic socialists want the government to take money from the wealthy and redistribute it to those who are less wealthy. So what do these “moral socialists” supposedly want? Take moral behavior from good people, to make them behave worse, so the badly behaving people will behave better?!? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

MSimon, you didn’t just build a strawman — he’s actually made of sawdust.

WAIT A MINUTE…

The Obama administration has a pretty cooperative and friendly attitude toward the Taliban. Aren’t they in the process of ceding Afghanistan to the Taliban?

If you really work the analogy, the closest thing to the Taliban here in America is… ACORN, to whom the Obama administration has ceded the American electoral system.

Shove it, Matthews.

Jeff for the WIN!

Just as a friendly reminder, I invite you to help Anita MonCrief fight off ACORN’s attempt to silence her.

Matthews has become downright laughable. Watching him is like viewing the closing scene in a porn flick. (at least that what the “big boys” tell me.)

Who are the first NGOs to compassionately respond to victims of natural disasters? Who give more sacrificially to the poor than any other group? Who are the most likely to give up successful careers in order to serve the underprivileged full-time? Who are the most likely to adopt one of the world’s 143 million orphans? (I could go on and on) The Religious Right or the Taliban?
