CNBC silencing criticism of Obama?
posted at 9:10 pm on October 23, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Via The Right Scoop, a moment where the business news network appears to earn its Obama Seal of Approval as a White House-approved news organization. Actually, this is rather mild, considering; the host of the show could have told her analyst that he had ceased being a real business reporter. Unfortunately, when discussing the impact of the Pay Czar on Wall Street, one cannot divorce politics from business, since Barack Obama (and to be fair, George Bush) married them so closely over the last twelve months:

Each of you, for himself, by himself and on his own responsibility, must speak. And it is a solemn and weighty responsibility, and not lightly to be flung aside at the bullying of pulpit, press, government, or the empty catchphrases of politicians. Each must for himself alone decide what is right and what is wrong, and which course is patriotic and which isn’t. You cannot shirk this and be a man. To decide against your convictions is to be an unqualified and inexcusable traitor, both to yourself and to your country, let man label you as they may. If you alone of all the nation shall decide one way, and that way be the right way according to your convictions of the right, you have done your duty by yourself and by your country.

Michelle Lee is very pro capitalism but you know working at CNBC’s probusiness channel cannot be easy nowadays, they are like the FED tasked with two conflicting goals, full employment and stable prices, probusiness and proObama, diametrically opposed viewpoints
Dylan Ratigan the former Fst Money host has been MAINLINING koolaide at MSNBC tho’ he is really off the rails
Charlie Gasparino is as always a mixed bag of Vinnie Goom Bah and shoe leather reporter, he is a real piece of work when he wants to be,

Larry Kudlow is the only one on the air still rallying for capitalism suply side economics and the flag, he and Melissa Francis on The Call…

Beck mentioned today that the “Pay Czar” didn’t cut the pay at GE, who also received bailout money. It seems to me that there is a big story there, which is not being covered. GE and the White House are a little too cozy. It doesn’t pass the smell test!

GE lobbied for special rules to get TARP money because they owned two small banks. The “special rules” it seems have precluded them from having to comply with the pay rules. You are right, it smells.

From the thread I linked, there was an interesting comment by WTFCI.
GE is bankrupt. They have no money. Comcast is reportedly making a bid for NBC. Comcast has enough cash to buy GE if they want to assume their debt obligations. Of course, they won’t because the GE debt obligations are so massive that only a Treasury apparatus could buy them out of this hole.
We’re already a Wiemar Republic. What makes ABC and FOX different is that their owners have diversified interests across global markets.
GE is now China’s betch. Whatever GE argues is what China wants. China needs GE to sell Americans on “green living” to revive a new supply chain of goods designed to meet those needs.
GE Capital is basically a mergers and acquisitions finance conglomerate. It’s bankrupt because it negotiated financing for mergers of firms that were highly leveraged with paltry assets.
alliebobbitt on October 23, 2009 at 9:35 PM
What’s strange about this is that I’ve heard several commenters on CNBC criticize Obama and his policies. For her to say, “We’re a trading show.” is strange because much of their programming runs a political line. It did with Bush, and it does with Obama. This seemed very uncharacteristic, even for CNBC. I think the reason why she stopped it so abruptly is because he said the buzz word, “socialist”. Obama is very VERY scared that word is sticking. Either way, Gasperino has been a guest FOREVER and he’s defended Obama in the past and should’ve been able to finish his point because it was pertinent to the discussion that SHE brought up.
Weight of Glory on October 23, 2009 at 9:36 PM
I met Immelt a couple times, when I worked for GE. About six years ago, I attended a meeting with him, as a customer. He spoke to a small group, bragging about how GE was transferring their plants overseas. I asked him how the company was going to grow when there weren’t any jobs left in America that allowed us to buy GE’s products.
He didn’t directly answer the question, but assured us that it would be twenty years before he could send the GE Aircraft Engine and GE Med Systems divisions overseas.
Star20 on October 23, 2009 at 9:39 PM
The host asked Gasperino about the pay czar situation, and Gasperino basically said it’s difficult for companies to know the full reach and ramifications of this new anti-Constitutional and illegal czar because Obama himself is a community organizer and a socialist. The host then cut him off saying, “this is a trading show.”
Weight of Glory on October 23, 2009 at 9:40 PM
I’m glad Gasparino pointed out the obvious, that capping salaries is socialism and that governments owning banks is socialism. Of course, it’s not what they asked him, but I’m not sure if they just wanted him to tell people Citi and BoA are smart investments?

Bill O’s schtick is to be controversial.
He keeps the Left pissed at him by straight reporting and commentary on insane things the Left is doing.
He keeps the Right pissed by constantly pretending not to ‘get it’ on things like Global Warming and if Obama is a socialist or not. “I have to be even-handed here, I can’t be a conservative partisan, I’m a journalist!”
It’s how he keeps both sides watching him, or at least paying attention to what he says.

Um, this isn’t new, Ed. Remember when Rick Santelli expressed opposition to Mortgage Bailoutmania and it prompted Jeffrey Immelt and Jeff Zucker to come down from the big boy offices and scold the network, and warn them about criticizing this administration:
http://newsbusters.org/blogs/warner-todd-huston/2009/04/18/nbc-suits-warn-cnbc-staff-against-obama-bashing-becoming-too-con
Of course, I’m sure it’s completely unrelated to the fact that Obama put Immelt (one of the countries worst CEOs ever) on his economic advisory panel, and that GE stands to make countless billions off of Obamacare and Cap-and-tax. Yeah, all just a coincidence.

We now know that the attack on the top 25 execs pay was just the foot in the door. Ken Feinberg has announced (today I think) that he will now be looking over exces 25-100 compensation.
Obviously, the people in those slots are high earners for the firms. They will bolt for foreign firms, join/start a hedge fund…whatever. This will be proven to be a counter productive move by Feinberg, in terms of firm stability and the more important issue of liberty and freedom.
Rick Santelli has all but disappeared from the network.
Fox should float him an offer.

China must be getting something good in exchange for buying our debt by the trillions. What our elected officials are doing to this country is treason. elclynn on October 23, 2009 at 10:22 PM
Wow. That was pretty egregious. In a normal world, it would have been totally unbelievable. Gasparino was even cowed into saying “borderline socialist” and that wasn’t allowed. “Ehhhh okay. Trading? What do you mean trading? [with guy chuckling in the background]” Too funny, though quite ominous.
As these arbitrary rules get implemented by the feral government and the media actively goes along and works to cover up for them, I’ll just repost a comment I made just after the election:

Mr Morrissey: Kudos for being honest enough to mention that GWB had a hand in the process of bastardizing American business/banking that Obama has only amplified. However, to be fair, how many HotAir pieces did you run criticizing Bush for his role in this process? (Not too many, is my guess — though I would hope that I am incorrect in that surmise.)
sanantonian on October 23, 2009 at 10:47 PM
Well, it’s been pretty obvious that the Obama Administration and his supporters wish to change the US economy into more of a European-style system where we will have a larger welfare state and more regulation of the financial industry to prevent, as they see it, financial bubbles and volatility in the markets and economy.
That means slower growth rates and less innovation.
Less risk, more security but lower growth and probably higher unemployment.

Unlike MSNBC, CNBC has done a pretty good job over the past two years of not losing the ratings battle to Fox Business Channel (though in part that’s due to the far fewer basic cable clearances FBN has). So the suits have got to know they’ve got to be careful here and walk a fine line between what the rest of the news division and the GE higher ups want, and what their business viewers will tolerate before their BS detectors go off.
People who are regular CNBC watchers are far more directly into the business of trying to make money than the average news channel viewer is, and if they start to believe the network is not giving them the straight story in order to make Obama look good, they will go elsewhere, either to Fox or the Bloomberg Business Channel, where that’s avalable.

I don’t know what you are talking about and it is either my reading comprehension or your lack of knowledge. I have found sources blaming the financial meltdown mostly on relaxed real estate lending rules. Then we had banking deregulation.
Anyway, putting people in houses they couldn’t afford sounds very Rino and Dem to me. And on the predatory lending, (something the papers were blaming for everything under the sun, including juvenile crime) where is Eric Holder and the state attorneys general? Could it be that some prominent Dems were cozy with the crooked lenders ? And this is after a billion words concerning illiterate fools who bought $500,000 condos thinking that their $35,000 a year would cover the nut. And the awful tragedy that befell them when they lived for months or a year or so without payments, trashed the neighborhood, sold the fixtures and moved to a place they could afford. Oh the humanity!
Anyway, unless I missed someting, President Bush did nothing (except Tarp?) to compare with what is going on today.
