Breaking: Palin endorses Hoffman

posted at 8:46 pm on October 22, 2009 by Allahpundit

If national media wasn’t following this race before, they will be tomorrow.

It’s my honor to endorse Doug and to do what I can to help him win, including having my political action committee, SarahPAC, donate to his campaign the maximum contribution allowed by law.

Our nation is at a crossroads, and this is once again a “time for choosing.”

The federal government borrows, spends, and prints too much money, while our national debt hits a record high. Government is growing while the private sector is shrinking, and unemployment is on the rise. Doug Hoffman is committed to ending the reckless spending in Washington, D.C. and the massive increase in the size and scope of the federal government. He is also fully committed to supporting our men and women in uniform as they seek to honorably complete their missions overseas.

And best of all, Doug Hoffman has not been anointed by any political machine.

Doug Hoffman stands for the principles that all Republicans should share: smaller government, lower taxes, strong national defense, and a commitment to individual liberty.

Follow the link for the full statement, which includes a reference to Reagan — whom, you’ll note, was also invoked by Gingrich during his interview with Laura Ingraham as an example of someone who campaigned for Republicans to his left ideologically. I said a few weeks ago that “Sarahcuda’s only a clear asset on the trail in a red district where the base isn’t turning out,” which makes NY-23 an almost perfect fit for her: Hoffman only wins if grassroots conservatives turn out in force and her endorsement is the surest way of making that happen. More interesting than the endorsement, though, is her derisive reference to “political machines.” That won’t win her any friends among the GOP’s leadership, but then, we already knew that she was positioning herself as the “true conservative” outsider. Which, again, makes this an almost perfect fit.

One note of warning: Although its congressional seat has traditionally been solid Republican, NY-23 did break for Obama last year. There is a Democratic presence there, which means there’s a risk that conservatives won’t be the only party base galvanized by her entrance into the campaign. For better or worse, some of her clout’s on the line here too, especially now that The One’s thrown in for the Democrat. Good luck, Palinistas.

When Hoffman pulls ahead you might see Huck or Romney endorse him. Until then, not a chance. You can always tell what someone truly believes by how much they are willing to risk. Palin is taking a risk by supporting a candidate who currently trails.

She believes in conservatism, bless her.

pugwriter on October 22, 2009 at 9:02 PM

Reminds me of the founding fathers willing to pledge their lives, liberty and fortunes to fight for independence and freedom.

Jvette on October 22, 2009 at 9:06 PM

Pledging their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor was brave, indeed. Our Founders struggle for independence wasn’t about political maneuvering, it was about liberty for their posterity.

The same is true of our current struggle.

pugwriter on October 22, 2009 at 9:12 PM

I read elsewhere Huck is having a hard time endorsing Hoffman, due to his grudge against the Club for Growth.

They were critical of him last time around, and they endorsed Hoffman already.

He did endorse Rubio, though, and I’d like to see Palin do the same. As others noted, she may feel some loyalty to Crist from their previous gubernatorial relationship.

cs89 on October 22, 2009 at 9:09 PM

If a Palin endorsement was worth $500K, the Huckster endorsement is worth a cool $24.00

Jeff from WI on October 22, 2009 at 9:12 PM

She has crossed the Rubicon. Now other republicans will be forced to choose sides:

More here.

Worth noting that Robert Stacy McCain is now in the catbird seat being the blogger on the spot when the biggest news of the day broke.

She had to do this. If she didn’t it would have made everything she said in her resignation speech meaningless.

Mark1971 on October 22, 2009 at 9:00 PM

Yes she did have to do this…..but what’s wonderful is she’s standing behind her words. Gingrich doesn’t realize that the “big tent” is chalk full of fiscal conservatives that are ready to eat raw meat. And the Huntress is taking dead aim at the wafflers.

Rovin on October 22, 2009 at 9:13 PM

with Fred Thompson also endorsing Hoffman, its not as big a deal as it seems.

jp on October 22, 2009 at 9:11 PM

Did someone wake Fred from his after the election nap?

Jeff from WI on October 22, 2009 at 9:13 PM

It’s a big risk for her, because she’s going to look like crap if Hoffman comes in third, and will only look moderately hot if he comes in second.

But if he wins, so does she, regardless of whether or not he would have won anyway.

Greg Q on October 22, 2009 at 8:51 PM

I doubt that Sarah Palin gave two thoughts to how she looks if Hoffman finishs second or third, she just wants the best candidate, Hoffman, to win.

RJL on October 22, 2009 at 9:14 PM

It’s amazing – you can read a very nice lead article declaring Scozzafava a complete disaster and discussing the surge behind Hoffman – on The New Majority of all places. I also checked in with “watch me on Leno” Meghan who hasn’t much more to say than “watch me on Leno”.

Sapwolf on October 22, 2009 at 9:16 PM

I love this site, BUT… I am truly becoming fed up with the picture of Palin winking. I’m sure it’s a part of her charm, but when used in every story about her, you make her seem as someone not to be taken seriously. She is a very down to earth person, but also very smart and a true conservative.

hopefloats on October 22, 2009 at 9:16 PM

It doesn’t matter whether he wins or loses; this is what we want in a leader, one who does what they believe is right for the country regardless. That’s why we love this woman. More guts than any of the men out there right now.

texanpride on October 22, 2009 at 9:16 PM

She said when she resigned she would go

around the country on behalf of candidates who believe in the right things, regardless of their party label or affiliation.

She wasn’t lying; she’s done just that. Some thought at the time that meant she would campaign on behalf of conservadems but it also meant she would stand up for real conservatives against the GOP machine. Good for her.

By her rise to governor, Palin already proved doing the right thing today beats cynical calculations for short-term gain. If Republicans lose 23 and Hoffman loses, it won’t be because Palin did the wrong thing. That distinction belongs to Newt and Republican apparatchiks.

While I’m excited to see Sarah Palin take on the GOP establishment and bring the issue of small govt back to national scene, I hope Doug Hoffman has his ducks in order in all this. The national media is going to be checking him for excessive earwax, spittle and weak answers. His website’s issues FAQ seems a mixed bag to me. That said, he’s leagues better than Dede Scozzafava-”R” for the seat.

I still remain hopeful.
