Quotes of the day

posted at 10:30 pm on October 21, 2009 by Allahpundit

“Recently, President Obama’s advisors have decided that it’s easier to blame the Bush Administration than support our troops. This weekend they leveled a charge that cannot go unanswered. The President’s chief of staff claimed that the Bush Administration hadn’t asked any tough questions about Afghanistan, and he complained that the Obama Administration had to start from scratch to put together a strategy.

“In the fall of 2008, fully aware of the need to meet new challenges being posed by the Taliban, we dug into every aspect of Afghanistan policy, assembling a team that repeatedly went into the country, reviewing options and recommendations, and briefing President-elect Obama’s team. They asked us not to announce our findings publicly, and we agreed, giving them the benefit of our work and the benefit of the doubt. The new strategy they embraced in March, with a focus on counterinsurgency and an increase in the numbers of troops, bears a striking resemblance to the strategy we passed to them. They made a decision – a good one, I think – and sent a commander into the field to implement it.

“Now they seem to be pulling back and blaming others for their failure to implement the strategy they embraced. It’s time for President Obama to do what it takes to win a war he has repeatedly and rightly called a war of necessity.”

The Obama administration fully expected to get away with their thugish behavior and blame-game. This because they believed the unwritten rule about the previous administration keeping quiet.

Expect them to complain shortly about VP Cheney not playing-by-the-rules.

Expect Cheney to respond with go-pound-sand, publicly, and go-f**k-yourself, privately

I expected all the wild, left, third world type garbage. And, frankly, I expected Him to use the first person pronoun like spaces between words but a lot of this stuff is beyond the level of stupid I expected. Quite beyond.

Oh, I don’t believe He knew that President Bush had a strategy. He probably never checked. He just works the press on His narrative and rolls.

I am mad at Bush for being so honorable to a despicable. lying administration. Then for Bush Sr to invite the liar in chief to come and talk to his group, I just can’t understand it. He knows that he criticizes his son every time he takes to a mic (and we all know how often that is). I know they are honorable men, but honestly.

The new strategy they embraced in March, with a focus on counterinsurgency and an increase in the numbers of troops, bears a striking resemblance to the strategy we passed to them.

McChrystal’s, Obama’s hand picked general after he sacked his predecessor, “Bridge on the River Kwai”/”COIN” strategy in Afghanistan is idiotic, and arguably dereliction of duty (see ROE), on a staggering scale.

We don’t win by destroying the Taliban. We don’t win by body count. We don’t win by the number of successful military raids or attacks, we win when the [Afghan] people decide we win.
- General McChrystal (in London last week)

Pre-occupied with protection of our own forces, we have operated in a manner that distances us — physically and psychologically — from the people we seek to protect.
- General McChrystal (from his COMISAF assessment of the war in Afghanistan)

What Is Victory?

Rarely has there been such a dramatic disconnect between rhetoric and reality. On Afghanistan, the national-security Right talks about “victory,” concerned Democrats talk about “success,” and Obama allies such as Sen. John Kerry talk about the “fulfillment of our mission.” They aren’t talking about the same thing. The somnolent press is content to court, rather than clarify, this confusion, but that’s no reason for the rest of us to go along for the ride.

The issue is not Obama’s inconstancy; it is the dubious nature of the mission. And I don’t mean the “mission” implied by the Right’s rhetoric; I’m talking about the mission as it is conceived by the theater commander. In a lengthy essay for the magazine section of last Sunday’s New York Times, Dexter Filkins, who was granted extraordinary access to General McChrystal, states the matter succinctly:

What McChrystal is proposing is not a temporary, Iraq-style surge — a rapid influx of American troops followed by a withdrawal. McChrystal’s plan is a blueprint for an extensive American commitment to build a modern state in Afghanistan, where one has never existed, and to bring order to a place famous for the empires it has exhausted.

Do you favor such a proposal? Is this what you thought American troops were being sent to Afghanistan for? Is this the mission we thought we were setting out to accomplish when American military force was unleashed after the September 11 attacks?

They made a decision – a good one, I think – and sent a commander into the field to implement it.

They made a terrible decision that has resulted in more American troops being killed for nothing.

“Now they seem to be pulling back

Remains to be seen.

and blaming others for their failure to implement the strategy they embraced.

They have implemented that strategy.

It’s time for President Obama to do what it takes to win a war he has repeatedly and rightly called a war of necessity.”

Win what? Afghan Muslim’s Hearts & Minds and Unicorns & Flowers? Madness!

Mr. Cheney, surely you are aware of the importance being reelected means. American grand strategy must take a second place to insuring the loyalty of important domestic blocks. Too bad for the guys that get killed, but you have to break a few eggs to make a liberal omelet–and a liberal omelet is obviously the only fit meat for the nation, so the ends justify the means. Plus, it’s just soldiers. Screw them.

On a more serious note:
The Chief Executive should pull out now or reinforce…now. Period. Take your hits like a man…if you can.

It’s nice to know that we haven’t had any military casualties in the last month over in Afghanistan, while Ogabe contemplates his navel. Or …. is it that the MSM is not reporting them, to cover for this coconut-head weasel we have for a president.

My guess is, brave men ARE dying while Ogabe looks around for an excuse to backpedal again, turn his back on his hand selected commander and give the finger to our men and women in uniform.

MB4 on October 22, 2009 at 12:20 AM

The new strategy they embraced in March, with a focus on counterinsurgency and an increase in the numbers of troops, bears a striking resemblance to the strategy we passed to them.

Of course it does.

The Obama White House has adopted many of Bush’s policies:

Rendition

Enhanced interrogation

Use of State Secrets

Use of signing statements

Secret Prisons

NSA wiretapping program

Patriot Act

Gen. Ordieno still in charge in Iraq (Obama put McCrystal in charge in Afghanistan only to ignore him)

Petraeus at Centcom

Gates as Sec. of Defense

Indefinite detention

…are just a few of the Bush policies that Obama has embraced.

Of course having successful programs passed down to you does not ensure success for the next President.
You still need leadership ability, courage, and strong decision making,…all qualities Obama lacks.

The Obama administration can have all the petty opinions of Bush all they want, but they can’t deny the facts of some of Bush’s successes:

US Troops Enjoy Salsa & Yoga Classes in Iraq Thanks to Massive Success of Bush Surge

http://gatewaypundit.firstthings.com/2009/10/us-troops-enjoy-salsa-yoga-classes-in-iraq-thanks-to-massive-success-of-bush-surge/

Try as they might, democrats were unsuccessful in persuading President George W. Bush to surrender to the terrorists in Iraq.
Today things are so calm that US troops are taking salsa and yoga classes to pass the time.

All the partisan, petty sniping by Obama and his liberal supporters can’t hide the fact that it they had there way, genocide and all out civil war would have taken place in Iraq instead of the success that is occurring there now thanks to President Bush and the American Soldier.

But Obama is to busy hosting parties at the White House, doing fund-raisers,and working on shutting down free speech to notice what real leadership and success bring to the world.

The pathetic Obama administration will do more to vindicate Bush and sooner than history will.

“What is thy bidding, my master?”

Terry_Dyne on October 22, 2009 at 12:30 AM

Obama vs. McChrystal?

Reading Gen. McChrystal’s Afghanistan assessment is easier than reading tea leaves, but judging by the murkiness of the debate about Afghanistan, few in the media or politics have read it. I say this having watched public discussion turn disagreement over troops levels into The Question of Consequence regarding overall strategy. Conservatives, listening to “the commander in the field,” play McChrystal as The Hawk who wants to crush America’s enemies into rubble (or, at least, more rubble than they are already in) as opposed to Obama The Wimp, whose hesitation and apparently dwindling support for a “surge” in Afghanistan threaten to turn McChrystal’s winning strategy into a politically correct and ineffective recipe for defeat.

But what really separates Obama and McChrystal? Judging by publicly available statements and writings, nothing much. Which is why — prediction time — McChrystal probably won’t quit when Obama gives him fewer forces than McChrystal is asking for.

Why? If you read McChrystal’s report, the general makes it very clear that his change in strategy, not his change in troop levels, is his top priority. But this change in strategy is almost always left out of debate — and certainly out of the conservative end of the debate, which focuses on giving the general the forces he wants to win. What McChrystal actually wants to win — the support of the Afghan people, which is the basis of his new strategy — is never mentioned.

This strategy change to “population protection” at the expense of “force protection” (or, better, this strategy change intensification because certainly key aspects of such a policy have long been in place) is in fact a politically correct and ineffective recipe for defeat, and, therefore, something right up the boss’s alley.

We need to do what The Precedent explicitly said he would do, back in the campaign (which was about the only thing that I agreed with him on, even though I knew that he was just lying when he said it) is operate in Pakistan and clean that whole situation up. The Afghanis can handle themselves, and they had better not get in the way.

They should replay The Precedent’s own quote right in front of the imbecile. He’d lose it and start babbling more incoherently than usual, letting out something that would just turn everyone’s stomach. Do it to Gibbels.

Obama vs Cheney — bringing a weiner to a gunfight. That is either Cheney.

Surely you meant a wiener, a tiny one.

On a more serious note, it was reported that the fertilizer we are providing to the villagers is being confiscated by the militants, and used to make IEDs.

Johan Klaus on October 22, 2009 at 12:33 AM

Please…
No way in he!! Obama (the genius who said the surge would not work and is trying his best to surrender in the Afghan/Pakistan theater) would provide the resources and men to take 3 divisions,do a 90 degree turn and be able to attack the center of the German “bulge” in less than 72 hours.

Obama would have insisted that we talk to the Germans, only send enough troops for “peace keeping”,and let them know we are sorry for acting like such bullies in the European region.

Obama is only holding on to the Bush appointees and military people that want to fight because he does not want to be bothered by this international headache that is obstructing his socialist vision of America.

There will be many resignations and firings in the near future.

The new faces will look nothing like the Patton’s or Petraeus’s.

They will look more like the LBJ’s and McNamara’s.

The damage is done. President Paintywaist has already sent a huge signal of timidity to the Taliban. They know this guy wants out of Afghanistan, new troops or no new troops. They know if they can repeat a larger scale BlackHawk Down, President Pantywaist will run. Nice job, Barry.

(quote from article)

I do not need to acknowledge anyone who lives off the state, rejects this country, does not take proper care of the education of his children and keeps producing little girls in headscarves.”

Unfortunately this honest assessment will be drowned out by faux liberal outrage and cries of racism.

Until that 51% that support his view actually take to the streets to defend it,he will be marginalized and demonized by ignorance and political correctness.

Here is a great breakdown of some of the strategy and options that are being looked at in the Afghan/Pakistan theater:

(via Black Five)

http://www.blackfive.net/main/2009/10/educating-the-public-about-counterinsurgency-counterterror.html

Warrior Legacy Institute (WLI) has released a second paper on our options for Afghanistan and Pakistan explaining Counterterror (CT) strategy. Last week “A primer on population-centric counterinsurgency” was the first paper designed to help the public understand what possibilities are under consideration for the theater.

If Obama can pull himself away from whining about FOX news and fund-raising,maybe he could take a look and listen to our people on the front lines.

Obama’s weakness and lack of leadership is doing nothing but sending a message of surrender to the Jihadist.

Jimbo over at Blackfive puts this in to perspective:

http://www.blackfive.net/main/2009/10/priorities-politics-afghanistan.html

It is pretty sad when a ballerina and a man repudiated by 21 of the 22 officers he briefly served with in Vietnam represent our brain trust on military strategy. Add in the VP and his magic ninja plan and you have half of the advice the President is getting about Afghanistan. It is ludicrous to claim we need to wait until after a runoff to make a decision. Does any sentient being think someone other than Karzai will win? And if Abdullah x2 does happen to win, is that a reason to bail? This is more sorry political posturing, and feels to me like they want to put off a tough call now so they don’t alienate the left wing, who they need to shove socialized medicine up our collective ass.

The magic ninja option now has a much more marketable tagline “Go deep” as opposed to McChrystal’s COIN being “Go big”. While that may be helpful in the media narrative and trying to sell it to a Congress that doesn’t want to be on the hook for helping lose the war, it doesn’t make the idea any more viable. It is a pie in the sky wish, wrapped in hope that ain’t gonna change a thing. It is a precursor play to allow cover for those who want to withdraw, but don’t want to say they agree to defeat. Herschel Smith rips it a new one over at the Captain’s Journal.

Running away from the jihadist is the worst thing we could do.
We need strong, decisive leadership, smarter ROE’s,and a plan that actually “defeats” the enemy, not re-labels them as moderates and walks away.

Obama needs to give our military what it needs to win or take them out of harms way and suffer the consequences of surrendering to the jihadist.

We don’t need anymore empty speeches or smart a$$ comments about Bush.
Lead or get the he!! out of the way and let our military do what it needs to do.

Baxter Greene on October 22, 2009 at 2:01 AM

Cheney delivered on target. But there is no joy in watching our President fail in Afghanistan. It’s going to get much worse.

We need to defeat the enemy before we start worrying about “illiteracy rates”:

(via the Captain’s Journal)

Lt. Col. Daniel L. Davis on Going Deep Rather than Long in Afghanistan

http://www.captainsjournal.com/2009/10/18/lt-col-daniel-l-davis-on-going-deep-rather-than-long-in-afghanistan/

The fact of the matter is that recent Marine Corps operations in Helmand found that they were in the beginning stages of gaining the human intelligence necessary to find and weed out the enemy, but also that fear of retribution is everywhere. Security is paramount to the Afghans, even above schools and other assistance. While the typical counterinsurgency tactics of population engagement and nonkinetic operations have been employed, the locals want us to chase and kill the Taliban.

Last time I saw, killing the enemy and securing the population was a pretty important aspect to winning a war.

Reducing troop levels, relying on special ops,and drones will not accomplish either of these.

Neither will a President who can’t even provide the resources for his original strategy put forth in March and now has no idea what he wants to do just 6 months later.

Our troops deserve better than this weak kneed, inept floundering they are getting from this White House.
