Police: Scozzofava call not justified
posted at 10:55 am on October 21, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
If a candidate wants to build some credibility as a Republican candidate for an election in which she faces both a Democrat and a conservative, would calling the police on a reporter from a conservative publication help or hurt that effort? It might help if the call had any justification at all. Unfortunately for Dede Scozzofava, the police all but told the Associated Press that she overreacted to a normal exchange:
Police questioned a reporter from a conservative publication after receiving a call that he harassed a Republican candidate for Congress who refused to answer his questions about her positions on tax and health issues.
Lowville Village Police Chief Eric Fredenburg said officers responded to a call Monday night saying state Assemblywoman Dierdre Scozzafava “felt concern for her safety” during questioning by reporter John McCormack of the Weekly Standard. He wouldn’t say who made the call.
“I don’t believe it ever escalated to anything that would ever be classified as an emergency,” Fredenburg said.
No charges were filed against McCormack.
And the AP hints that Scozzofava may have been dishonest about it from the beginning (emphasis mine):
In a statement released Tuesday to the blog Politico, Scozzafava’s campaign said the reporter “repeatedly screamed questions (in-your-face-style),” but later issued a statement deleting the accusation.
So what did John say that frightened Scozzofava so much? He asked her about her position on Card Check (she supports it), abortion (she supports it), and whether she would vote for a health care bill that raised taxes and covered abortions. No wonder Scozzofava panicked!
Jazz Shaw, who earlier had given Scozzofava a shot in this race, says that should just about finish her:
That’s the kind of “grilling” that results in a call to the police? And this woman plans on moving in to the hot-house environment on the Hill? Congratulations, Democrats. I think you’re in line to grab yet another seat in the House. Yeesh. I still maintain that the local party officials have the right to select and push their own chosen candidate for the primaries, but it’s hard to imagine how they settled on this one.
I know John McCormack, having met him a couple of times at events, and having interviewed him on my show a few times. It’s hard to imagine a calmer, friendlier person in the media than John. He makes Minnesota Nice look like a home playoff game at Yankee Stadium. There may be some reporters who would get in the face of a candidate in the way Dede Scozzofava imagined this week, but not John McCormack. What an embarrassment, especially for those national Republicans who went out of their way to endorse Scozzofava like Newt Gingrich.
Hopefully, Douglas Hoffman can take advantage of the situation.

Could Soros have bought off some of these GOP leaders at all?
It seems like they are so self-destructive and hostile to libertarianism and conservatism and the Constitution.
Sapwolf on October 21, 2009 at 12:19 PM
What the GOP wants is the “R” and what most of America wants is a Conservative…the GOP, and especially Newt, needs to wake up and realize that the “good ol boys club” needs to swing open their doors and embrace conservatives, libertarians (if you can find a logical one), and even democrats that are quasi conservative (Lieberman was a good example).
right2bright on October 21, 2009 at 11:12 AM
Didn’t Newt give a speech to CPAC recently saying that conservative need to send a message to the Republican Party they can no longer count on conservatives just by having an “R” behind their name? Me thinks Newt is really running hard for 2012. A common syaing in aviation here in Arizona when a pilot makes a fatal mistake is: “He stepped on his d*ck.” Looks like Newt just stepped on his.

LMAO! Newt is done. His credibility is shot all to hell after this.

“You expect me to answer questions??? Directly??? Ahhhhhhhh!!! Someone call the police, my crafted image is in danger.”
TQM38a on October 21, 2009 at 12:23 PM
He’s running as the Conservative Party and has already stated he will caucus with the GOP.
There is NO reason NOT to vote for Hoffman. He by far matches the people in that district.
There is NO reason for the GOP to run a RINO in that conservative district. Hoffman would destroy the Dem if Scuzzy dropped out.
Sapwolf on October 21, 2009 at 12:30 PM
What few scraps of conservative cred Newt had scrounged up are now gone (forever, I hope). Whenever Newt, McCain, Graham, Snowe, Collins, Steele, etc. sound the Big-Tent-We- Welcome-All-In-The-Republican-Party bell, they sound like spineless buffoons with no convictions, other than their own political gain. Guess what guys–you being more like liberals does not mean they will return the favor. Ever.
Conservatives welcome and will never shun anyone who believes in the sanctity of human life; who believes Americans are better off without the intervention of the government; who believes our Constitution is the foundation of this great nation and it’s principles/guidelines do not change; that everyone is created equal–with an equal opportunity to succeed; and that our freedom is worth fighting for. I think that is pretty darn good tent, and RINO’s/DIABLO’s need to leave it the hell alone.

If Newt thinks he can run in 2012, then he is in fact insane. There is no way he can win as the others will mention his support of a far left freak in NY-23.
Sapwolf on October 21, 2009 at 12:32 PM
Well I didn’t specifically mean she could win. I just don’t think she’s going away unless she does get trounced. The classy thing for her to do would be to drop out, which is why she won’t.

h/t Ace’s website:
KOS has endorsed Scozzofava.
Good job Gingrich, you idiot.

(I love pizza joints, so that’s not the problem.)

Is this an old pic.???? The one they’re showing every where now looks like she hasn’t pushed away from the table too much.
ohiobabe on October 21, 2009 at 12:52 PM
It may sound weird, but I’m glad that Gingrich has finally fully self-immolated. I was pretty sick of him trying to win the crown of America’s Top Moderate. Every time a conservative would mention Newt, all I could say was: “I don’t know, he keeps weirding out lately.” Now that he’s pinned his career hook-line-and-sinker to a complete basket case, we can finally move on.
It’s time to realize that Gingrich is officially part of the dead weight that has to be cut loose from the Republican Party if we have any hope of being a viable political movement.

The GOP Ayatollahs should really pull this car over to the side and let us drive for awhile.
I mean – we’re taking the wheel from them next year for sure – but it would spare them a lot of problems if they just handed us the wheel now.

After Gingrich’s disastrous embrace of global warming insanity, this sort of total fall into insanity was inevitable. I always liked Newt, but he has become far too much of a moronic pain-in-the-a$$.
Take a time-out, Newt. Go away. Think. Ponder your idiocy. And keep your mouth shut. You are doing terrible damage. Think about it and come back when you’ve gotten your act together. Until then, stay away. You are a destructive force, at this point.

Sweet Evil Jesus, please let Doug Hoffman win!
WordsMatter on October 21, 2009 at 1:27 PM
I’ve suspecte SNewt all allong. His switch on the Global Warming issue set of an alarm in my head. My suspicions were confirmed when he sat on the sofa with Nancy Pelosi for that feel good Enviro add. My thought is he is a politico that would do ANYTHING for power. Including making a deal with the devil(Soros) aka György Schwartz .
Burgher on October 21, 2009 at 1:29 PM
As a liberal, I’m sure she would much rather the Democrat win, than Hoffman. A liberals big tent never stretches out beyond other liberals.
MarkTheGreat on October 21, 2009 at 1:38 PM
Actually, Newt is just outing himself. I don’t know who is paying him but his credibility is destroyed and whatever his payoff was/is I hope it was worth it.

Is there a law against calling the police to intimidate other people?
I can’t believe it is perfectly legal to call the police on some one because they ask you a question you don’t like…

Now, now, the GOP leadership specifically selected a slate of moderates up and down the ticket in 2008 and that worked so well. Oh, wait, historic gains for the democrats? Losing the presidency to a do nothing state senator who is best buddies with one of America’s most infamous terrorist? On second thought, maybe we shouldn’t try the same damn thing we tried in 2008…
18-1 on October 21, 2009 at 1:55 PM
Toast. This should be a wake up call for all rinos. The rnc better find some conservatives to run or just call it quits.
Kissmygrits on October 21, 2009 at 2:04 PM
I just sent Newt an email, expressing my opinion. His spokesman is not answering the phone. Here is what I said:
Dear Mr. Gringrich,
You are now our offical “jimmy carter”. You are a usuless RHINO, and I used to respect you. From now on, the volumn gets turned down whenever I see you. Your endorsement of a liberal RHINO, who was endorsed by KOS, of all people, just shows your stupidity and how out of touch you are with the grassroots of the “Republican party”. We WILL not vote for a republican tha is just like a democrap, never again. If a democrap wins, so be it. It will be no loss, considering all Dede stands for…She was endorsed by the unions–for heavens sake!!!
To bad, it’s sad to see a former great politician reduced to a slobbering love affair with RHINO’s…
Sincerely, and goodbye,
Teresa Yeisley

To quote the great Margaret Thatcher, now is not the time to go wobbly. Now is the time to form battle-hardened conservative cadres who will be willing to fight 0bama head on in ’12. To paraphrase Harry Truman, give the people a choice between a Democrat and a Democrat, they’ll take the Democrat every time.
Lou Budvis on October 21, 2009 at 2:08 PM
I think Republicans should just change their name to Democrat, and call themselves “Blue-Dogs”…then what would the media do? LOL
Most of the Republicans elected are Democrat anyway…so they should just be honest…let the Senate and House be 100% Democrat.
Get rid of the parties…they have lost their purpose

I emailed the NRA to ask what possessed them to endorse this RINO POS. They have been pretty good about anwering my questions and I will let you know what they say this time. I suspect it may be because she’s an (R) (alledgedly) and filled in a questionnaire with the “right” responses. I suggested they ought to do their homework before endorsing candidates.
