Department of Propaganda? Update: AOL Hot Seat poll added

posted at 10:12 am on October 21, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Maybe this is the Hope and Change we were promised.  One official government website now includes a form to express support of Dear Leader President Obama’s effort to overhaul the American medical system, a clear violation of laws against executive-branch propaganda through public channels.  Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA) sent a letter demanding an explanation from HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, on whose website this form appears:

Senate Finance ranking member Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) is raising concerns that a Department of Health and Human Services Web site that urges visitors to send an e-mail to President Barack Obama praising his health care reform plan may violate rules against government-funded propaganda.

The Web page is accessed through a “state your support” button featured prominently on the HHS Web site and carries a disclaimer that the Web site is maintained by HHS.

In a letter sent to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius Tuesday, Grassley warned that “any possible misuse of appropriated funds by the executive branch to engage in publicity or propaganda in support of an Administration priority is a matter that must be investigated and taken seriously,” noting that in 2005 Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) argued that “the use of official funds for similar activities were ‘underhanded tactics’ and that these tactics ‘are not worthy of our great democracy.’”

Subtle, it ain’t.  Here’s a screenshot of the main HHS website; note the graphic on the sidebar:

It reads: “Many Americans are struggling to make ends meet as the cost of care goes up while others face losing insurance as businesses struggle to cover employees. Visit www.HealthReform.gov“.  When people click on the graphic or the link, they go to the site accurately reported by Roll Call as a campaign site for Obama’s health-care reform efforts, on the .gov site that should be for official business only.  People can add their names and contact information in support of the following letter:

Dear Mr. President,

We strongly support your commitment to comprehensive health reform.

This is not a luxury. The continuing, sharp escalation of health care costs for families, businesses, and government is unsustainable. Reform is imperative.

We believe that health reform must be enacted this year.

Reform is needed to help America’s families struggling with rising costs and those who are losing their insurance. At the same time, real health reform is crucial to keeping American businesses competitive in the world economy and for the country’s long-term economic viability. As our country faces economic challenges, the time for reform is now.

We support health reform that follows these principles:

  • Protect families’ financial health
  • Assure affordable, quality health coverage for all Americans
  • Provide portability of coverage
  • Guarantee choice of doctors
  • Invest in prevention and wellness
  • Improve patient safety and quality of care
  • End barriers to coverage for people with pre-existing medical conditions
  • Reduce long-term growth of health costs for businesses and government

During these extraordinarily challenging times, we need to put aside past differences and address the health and economic crisis. Our shared interest must come before narrow interests so we can achieve a health system that is affordable and provides high quality for all Americans. We will support your budget with its reserve fund dedicated to achieving health care reform in a fiscally responsible manner. Each of us must be prepared to contribute to achieving this fundamental goal.

By signing this statement we affirm our commitment to work with you and our Congressional leaders to enact legislation this year which provides affordable, high quality coverage for all Americans.

Frankly, it’s impossible to read this as anything but propaganda for the White House.  And what happens to the contact information entered in the form?  Does that get used by Barack Obama for his re-election campaign?  Is he using government websites to fuel a mailing list for his own electoral use?

Grassley wants answers to all of these questions — and so should we all.

Update: Added AOL Hot Seat poll.

Grassley also asked for answers on the firing of Inspector General Gerald Walpin. I haven’t heard if he has received any answers to those questions.

I hope that Chuck Grassley continues to hammer the White House on their illegal activities and makes a clear and compelling case for doing so.

Please take a moment to strengthen Grassley’s hand by sending him a quick note of support. Reiterate calls for answers to Walpingate.

I tell you, this stuff keeps coming and keeps coming. The question is whether they put it all in place months ago and it’s just getting brought out a peice at a time, or are they so stupid that they don’t realize how much they are damaging themselves, as well as violating the law?

This keeps up, I might just crawl into a barrel of Jack Daniels for the next year. Wake me up in Nov ’10.

NickelAndDime on October 21, 2009 at 10:43 AM

The administration has made it difficult to have a discussion by continually pretending that they are in favor of reform, while all of their opponents want to keep the status quo. So I have no doubt that they see this as essentially propoganda for their side.

But, I also think most of their “principles” would be better served, really, by a conservative alternative. Choice of doctor? Portability of coverage?

The truth is, the “letter” here is basically contentless. All it says is “we think things should be better.” Well, don’t we all. The devil is in the details, but we have to fight to get those discussed. Obama pretends his solution is the only one, after all – government is the answer, always.

KATHLEEN SEBELIUS

Kathleen Sebelius is a staunch defender of easy abortion. Through her years in the State Legislature and into the Governor’s Office, Sebelius has fought against any limits on abortion. Her political career has been funded largely by Tiller himself.

As Governor, Sebelius says she favors “safe and legal” abortion, but she has twice vetoed regulation that would have and established basic health standards and required periodic inspection of Kansas abortion clinics. Despite her rhetoric of “choice”, she vetoed legislation that would have outlawed coerced abortion.

Tiller has long supported Sebelius. Over the years, Tiller has given over $38,000 to her campaigns and political causes. Sebelius can easily be called “The best politician that blood money can buy!”

This is all about re-election in 2012 and damage control for the 2010 midterms. Vilification of Fox news, taxpayer funded propaganda, foot dragging by the senate ethics committee on corrupt Senators, Holder’s pandering to the black base, procrastination on more troops for Afghanistan, trying to hide from ACORN relationships, etc. He hasn’t been in office a year and the polarization is astounding. Newt and the RNC seem unable to grasp what the Tea Party concept is all about. I was in college when JFK was killed and have listened to the argument that third parties are suicide my entire adult life. So, where has that taken us? More of the same isn’t the answer and I sincerely doubt the GOP can be restructured to reflect conservative values, with the present leadership. At some point, the dice have to be rolled.

You have to understand what it is like to be a leftest liberal and how privileged it is.

Simply put leftest liberals can do no wrong. Leftest liberals can not be questioned. Leftest liberals generally, not always, are above the law.

The biggest problem is that the MSM is 99% leftest liberals that not only support the leftest agenda but help to enable it.

The sad thing about this country is that the people just did not understand the type of people they have elected over the past few years. The cherry on top was the election of BO. Then again maybe they do understand and support the leftest agenda.

My thoughts are that a majority of people in this country desperately want to live under communist rule. I really don’t know why this is but I do believe it to be true. I’m very sorry to say that I think they will be getting their wish with the current leadership scum. When they do realize their dream, I for one hope it turns out to be a nightmare beyond imagination for every last one of them. I can see it being no other way as one does not go from being the most privileged country on earth to what amount to living in Cuba and accepting it.

It is important to remember on a daily basis that health care reform has nothing to do with health care and every thing to do with assuming control over 17% more of the US economy. These discussions about costs etc are simply a ruse to pretend that there is analysis going on. The cost of universal care is irrelevant. Taking over this industry is the goal.

Combined with existing controls and cap and trade coming next the politicians in DC, both Dem and Repub, will have complete effective control over the economy. This has been the goal since the New Deal. Nowadays it’s called being a progressive. The only administration that attempted to halt this process was Reagan, he to failed. Every other admin has been complicit in this evolution.

If you don’t believe me look at any charts of gov spending, debt etc that cover the post war era. The growth of government programs/spending never stops expanding, at best it pauses. The only thing that changes are the excuses why it is necessary.

Didn’t need to read the name under the headline to know this was posted by Ed and not Allah. Because nowhere in the post did it say ” in fairness to Obama”.

Yes it was sarcasm on my part. I didn’t think that post required me to clarify, but I guess there’s always one person out there who doesn’t get it.

Color me fooled too. Sometimes the /s is your friend.

Obama will hold up the emails and say, “America wants my health care reform.!”

Then he will throw up.

If you need flu vaccine and can’t find it, try your local school nurse. The schools usually get it first and if they don’t have any she will probably know where you can get it. My son is a tier one risk also and he is getting his today, because our school has a few available for tier one but not for staff or students yet. Your granddaughter would be in that category. Try them even if she isn’t school age. Sometimes it matters what state you are in, some were more on the ball ordering than others. I live in South Dakota and we have it available here.

Which is why I have little faith the present system can survive. It doesn’t appear to matter which party is in power. At the present rate, there isn’t enough time to rebuild conservative fiscal policy into the GOP, even if the leadership were willing. Present events and past mistakes are overtaking us too quickly. I can easily see a Peron Argentina scenario within the next 10 years. Our leverage in the world is being lost and we are vulnerable.

PattyJ on October 21, 2009 at 11:45 AM

Why does HHS need to do this? Remember the August speeches from the filthy lying coward in the White House? He was personally reading letters from Americans all demanding healthcare reform before Congress went on recess. Is the rat bastard traitor not reading his mail anymore?

highhopes on October 21, 2009 at 11:48 AM

This is illegal, no? A thorough investigation is needed including hearings.

Since the “real” news organizations seem to be taking a snooze, bravo to Grassley for adding some balance to gov. goings on. Shame on you for such drivel.
