Video: Deeds and the WaPo endorsement

posted at 3:35 pm on October 20, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

How valuable will the Washington Post endorsement be to Creigh Deeds in his quest for the Virginia governorship? So valuable that it already is prominently featured in a campaign ad … for his opponent, Bob McDonnell, who has a comfortable lead in polling. The GOP hammers one particular point in the endorsement repeatedly. Want to guess what it is?

I’m reminded of a classic editorial cartoon by the late, great Jeff MacNelly, titled The Carter Endorsement – showing Carter as a relay runner and Walter Mondale doing everything he could to avoid grabbing the baton.  With endorsements like this, one hardly needs opposition.  It’s an amusing moment of political backfire, especially so since it comes from the Post, which attempted to “macaca” McDonnell with an old college thesis — an attempt that failed miserably.  Maybe they should have praised McDonnell instead….

Blowback

I think it’s reached the point where newspaper endorsements may cost a candidate votes from conservatives and moderates. Whenever I hear “newspapers across the state support my position” I assume his position is a poor choice, regardless of what party the speaker belongs to.

hawksruleva on October 20, 2009 at 3:41 PM

Goodbye Mr.Deeds

portlandon on October 20, 2009 at 3:41 PM

That’s a good one. I like the way it feels like the ad was put out by Deeds. I.e., the presentation is direct and not snarky.

WashJeff on October 20, 2009 at 3:42 PM

WaPo has been campaigning for Deeds for months. Seems as if every article announces a macaca moment for McDonnell.

Palin vs. Oprah. This is gonna be good.

Doughboy on October 20, 2009 at 3:44 PM

What other impartial organization endorses Deeds, the DNC? MoveOn.org? The Committee to Re-Elect Barack Obama?

Anyone who holds a Washington Post endorsement in high esteem, is already a Deeds voter, this will sway no one.

NoDonkey on October 20, 2009 at 3:44 PM

Looking forward to the debate tonight. It’s being hosted by the TV station I work at. The Lt. Gov debate was pretty rowdy, complete with a screaming match in the lobby.

hawksruleva on October 20, 2009 at 3:44 PM

Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap – the Washington Post.

NoDonkey on October 20, 2009 at 3:46 PM

Even if Deed wanted to use this endorsement in his own ads, he no longer can since it will TOTALLY mean the raise taxes part is true.

Who knew there was a smart Republican strategist out there????

WashJeff on October 20, 2009 at 3:47 PM

Hey, this doesn’t look like the sort of ad that Michael Steele would approve of!
We need to appeal to those who might like paying higher taxes.

jjshaka on October 20, 2009 at 3:47 PM

Next project for WaPo ……..

Convincing readers Deed’s loss was a good thing and is no indication of the country’s mood swing away from the atrocious policies and failures of Teh One.

Count on it.

It’s a parody of this ad by the way:

That makes the ad even better (context). Thanks for sharing.

txag92 on October 20, 2009 at 3:52 PM

We’re having a Kane mutiny and we’re going to make sure Dirty Deeds is getting nowhere near the Governor’s house here in Virginia!

vapig on October 20, 2009 at 3:52 PM

After watching that ad by the Republican Party of Virginia (give credit where credit is due), one would get the impression that Mr. Deeds kinda sorta likes raising taxes.

(/Duh)

WashJeff on October 20, 2009 at 3:47 PM

Alert the RNC!

Although that will take a gong to wake them from their slumber.

And their first course of action will of course be to squash this, we can’t have an effective strategy, otherwise we might start winning elections!

NoDonkey on October 20, 2009 at 3:54 PM

What? No nuttiness? No cartoonish figures? No cool, hip, gangsta attitude?

A-FRICKEN-MEN!

And the best line is the last. Thanks, WaPo!

hawksruleva on October 20, 2009 at 3:44 PM

I listened to the lt. gov one on the radio, it was awful. I wish these people would debate like people – debate ideas, philosophy, etc – and not like politicians, arguing over the number of meetings attended, quibbling over duelling accountant appraisals of funding requests, trading other politicians’ endorsements back and forth, crowing over their bipartisanship, etc. We need to bring in some Brits to teach ‘em how to have a real good verbal fight!

AdrianG on October 20, 2009 at 3:57 PM

Shorter me: Like Instapundit says a lot, our political class is EPIC FAIL.

Ace is talking today about infiltrating county GOP boards to get tea-partiers on the tickets, it may be our only hope.

AdrianG on October 20, 2009 at 3:59 PM

I hope they endorse every dem in the 2010 elections….

“The Southwest voters (read: neo-Nazi, Redneck Fox News fans) came out in particularly large numbers to vote as a “Klan” let’s say… this was not a repudiation of Obama, but rather the reaction of an angry, uneducated, white cohort scared by Rush Limbaugh into thinking that they’re going to have to turn their women and property over to black people, homosexuals and undocumented workers.”

mankai on October 20, 2009 at 4:00 PM

Until I heard this I had been intending to sit out the Virginia Governor election because I really don’t like Deeds, and I’m apathetic towards McDonnell. But this clinches it, McDonnell is getting my vote.

Vegi on October 20, 2009 at 4:00 PM

Tim Kaine has pretty much ruined any chance at Democrat success in Virginia.

uknowmorethanme on October 20, 2009 at 4:02 PM

Can he rollout that kind of “success” at a national level when he takes the helm of the DNC full-time?

WashJeff on October 20, 2009 at 4:06 PM

WaPo could steal that and print it verbatim.

Are we sure the Republicans had a hand in this?

LMAO. What the hell kind of endorsement was that?!

Jaibones on October 20, 2009 at 4:20 PM

Can’t wait until the day after the election when McDonnell has won by 10 points.

The WaPo will will be in denial and issue a poll showing Deeds 12 points ahead.

BacaDog on October 20, 2009 at 4:23 PM

The thing is so many of these VA ads is that if you watched them you still wouldn’t know who the hell he was running against. There are other ones on TV where McDonnell’s name isn’t even mentioned anywhere.

LevStrauss on October 20, 2009 at 4:24 PM

Can’t stop laughing!

dscherck on October 20, 2009 at 4:26 PM

Well the Virginia GOP is showing what it can do when its candidate doesn’t do something stupid like call a brown skinned guy a weird name.

Speedwagon82 on October 20, 2009 at 4:28 PM

His radio ads are annoying and insulting. The speaker has a heavy southern accent and bashes McDonnell by going after Bush’s “tax cuts for the wealthy.” The ads are also complete distortions and lies and try to pass Deeds off as a Conservative. It seems things are a little different in Northern VA.

If the Reps win in NJ and VA, the State Media Narrative will be: Racists turnout to oppose Dem nominees.

If the Reps win in VA but not NJ, the State Media Narrative will be: Republicans can’t win outside of the South because they are racists.

Of course, the State Media narrative in days that end in “y” is that non-leftists are racists.

Speedwagon82 on October 20, 2009 at 4:28 PM

I guess in the future Republican candidates have to remember not to call anyone a name that might be construed as a racial insult…in Portuguese.

You know, the media worships Obama, literally, but I still think the macaca thing is the worst example of agenda based “journalism” I have ever seen.

Just what the commie state of Virginia needs, I use to be a resident so I can say that, more taxes.

WashJeff on October 20, 2009 at 3:47 PM

Deeds already went with the WaPo endorsement ads starting on the weekend and conveniently left out this part. This McDonnell ad effectively neutralizes the endorsement – if it had any influence to begin with. I’m praying Deeds can’t make up his 9 point short-fall, but anything can happen and Obama, Clintoon and others have yet to do their campaigning here.

The Post would endorse a pile of horsecrap if it were running as a Democrat.

And it works!

Just ask Obama, Pelosi and Reid, all tremendous piles of horsecrap.
