Tapper to Gibbs: Who are you to decide what constitutes a news organization?

posted at 12:55 pm on October 20, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Sheer comedy gold from one of the most honest White House correspondents in the business.  Jake Tapper used his time in the Briefing Room to challenge Robert Gibbs on the Obama administration’s attempts to brand Fox News as something other than a news organization.  Gibbs sputters but never answers Tapper’s essential question:

Tapper: It’s escaped none of our notice that the White House has decided in the last few weeks to declare one of our sister organizations “not a news organization” and to tell the rest of us not to treat them like a news organization. Can you explain why it’s appropriate for the White House to decide that a news organization is not one –

(Crosstalk)

Gibbs: Jake, we render, we render an opinion based on some of their coverage and the fairness that, the fairness of that coverage.

Tapper: But that’s a pretty sweeping declaration that they are “not a news organization.” How are they any different from, say –

Gibbs: ABC -

Tapper: ABC. MSNBC. Univision. I mean how are they any different?

Click over to Tapper’s blog to hear the answer.  Ultimately, though, Gibbs thoroughly misses Tapper’s point.  The White House is not just some political 501(c)3 issuing opinion statements on policy.  They’re the executive branch of government, who exist to enforce laws and are accountable to the people, at least in part (one hopes) through the media.  It’s entirely inappropriate to make pronouncements on the credibility of those organizations holding them accountable, especially when they try to wheedle other news organizations into ignoring them.

What do they have to fear from Fox News, after all?  It makes them look petty and craven, instead of simply responding on each story and letting other news organizations tell their side of the story.  After all, they have no lack of volunteers for that task.

It’s the difference between campaigning and governing.  Gibbs et al still haven’t learned it, and they look like Amateur Hour as a result, or worse, Nixonian.  At the moment, no video of the exchange is available, but I’ll update this post with it as soon as its available.

What do they have to fear from Fox News, after all?

That their lies, incompetence and corruption will be exposed for what it is perhaps?

It’s OK to calim that Fox News is not a news organization, says Gibbs…because “that’s our opinion”. It’s OK because it’s an opinion.

However, Bill O’Reilly’s opinion is not OK, Hannity’s is not OK, Beck’s is not OK, etc.

Libtards…they never cease to amuse.

Tapper to Gibbs: Who are you to decide what constitutes a news organization?

I’m a right-winga… but fox is way too tilted in its programming…

Beck and Hannity by themselves is way way way too much bias… One of them has to go… or be balanced out…

Tapper: But that’s a pretty sweeping declaration that they are “not a news organization.” How are they any different from, say –

Gibbs: ABC -

Tapper: ABC. MSNBC. Univision. I mean how are they any different?

Gibbs obviously attempted to prevent Tapper from mentioning MSNBC. He knew it was coming and tried to interject with a different news outlet before he could mention it. The White House does not want to talk about the fact that MSNBC is further to the left (in support of their agenda) than Fox News is to the right (against their agenda). Their really is no doubt about it that MSNBC is more biased than Fox News is. Not to say that Fox News isn’t biased because they are. They are just unique in terms of the direction of their bias. Hence their awesome ratings.

In other words, Gibbs was scared to death of one question: What do you think of MSNBC’s obvious bias? Would you like to deny it exists or admit the fact that you are a partisan hack in perpetual campaign mode?

Zetterson on October 20, 2009 at 1:07 PM

Gibbs: Jake, we render, we render an opinion based on some of their coverage and the fairness that, the fairness of that coverage.

To keep coverage ‘fair’, journalists are supposed to fact check stories instead of comedy skits. That alone would make sure, to whatever degree, other news outlets are repeating a story both accurate and verified. That’s the real way to keep the people properly informed.

The problem will be finding the adults. According to a Rasmussen poll two of the bigger losers from last years debacle are the front runners, with the bigger of the two buffoons in the lead. It’s early yet, but it still seems to me that somewhere there has to be a good candidate. Right at this moment I’m pushing for my governor, in five years he’s only done one thing to piss me off.

Tapper: ABC. MSNBC. Univision. I mean how are they any different?

Gibbs: You and I should watch sometime around 9 o’clock tonight. Or 5 o’clock this afternoon.

Tapper: I’m not talking about their opinion programming or issues you have with certain reports. I’m talking about saying thousands of individuals who work for a media organization, do not work for a “news organization” — why is that appropriate for the White House to say?

Gibbs: That’s our opinion.

You should watch MSNBC 24/7.

If Beck and Hannity disqualify the entire nework, then Chrissy, KO and the Beast certainly disqualify MSNBC… at least Hannity has Democrats on his show (such as it is).

mankai on October 20, 2009 at 1:16 PM

To me there is an interesting issue raised by Mr. Tapper’s question. If the White House can declare something (e.g. Fox news) not a “news organization”, how far does that go? Can they declare some other group to not be a “religion”? Can they declare some speech not to be “expression”?

Once the executive has its foot in the door and starts declaring, by fiat, what is “news” and what is not, then isn’t it a slippery slope?

The last I heard, the second amendment gave us freedom of speech, which includes Olber what’s his face, Hannity, Rush, Beck, and anyone else that has the clout and talent to be on a national radio or TV talk show. It is absolutely no business of the White House what these people are talking about. It they are telling lies, then sue them in civil court, or go on the friendly venues and tell your side. If FOX is lying, I am sure you could get on FOX and tell your side. Dispute what you think are lies. If the public does not like what they say, they will not watch or listen and they will go away, otherwise, mind your own business and leave them alone.

Then the whine of a jet engine–followed by a loud blast that shook the room and caused all to cringe as the chandeliers swung and plaster dust rained down on the “reporters” in the room.
***
Deja Vu all over again–without the blasts and plaster dust. Let’s start calling Comrade Obama (PBUH) and his bootlicking American Pravda “newsmen” by their true names. I suggest BELTWAY BOB for Gibbs nom de guerre.
***
The American Voters and the SARAH’CUDA will provide the plaster dust in the 2010 and 2012 elections. I think I hear a whistling sound already.

I posted my appreciation on his blog in the comments section. He’s a pretty straight shooter, especially when compared to some of his colleagues and competitors, e.g. Andrea “I-wouldn’t-characterize-George-Soros-as-far-left” Mitchell.

Why do some here think Gibbs is incompetent? You think he is saying things Obama doesn’t believe in?

Gibbs is a very smart guy.

…Robert Gibbs on the Obama administration’s attempts to brand Fox News as something other than a news organization…

Has anyone seen my country lately? I lost it in January and can’t seem to locate the United States of America…

I can see it coming soon: Jake Tapper is cast aside, not allowed to come into White House briefings by Gibbs, et al, because he’s “not a real reporter”. Just wait.

If Helen Thomas keeps bringing up this topic, Gibbs will stick her back in the last row, like Tony Snow did. LOL

Luckily, there’s the usual fawning syncophants to fill their spaces so no empty chairs will show during “pressers”.

I meant the first amendment, not the second. Must have weapons on my mind.

Go Jake Tapper! Nice job!

People need to understand that Tapper and Fox News are only things standing between us and a Chavez type democracy.

Don’t forget their No. 1 enemy from EIB.

JammieWearingFool on October 20, 2009 at 1:26 PM

Why is Gibbs still in his job?

ORconservative on October 20, 2009 at 1:21 PM

And that ain’t easy.
