Pelosi “very excited” that House ObamaCare bills will cost slightly less than $900 billion

posted at 10:10 pm on October 20, 2009 by Allahpundit

Aim high, Nancy.

House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Tuesday new estimates showed a healthcare overhaul drafted by Democrats would reduce the U.S. budget deficit over 10 years and cost less than $900 billion.

The preliminary estimates from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office moved Democratic leaders closer to finishing a merger of three separate healthcare reform bills into one for debate on the House floor…

“We’re very excited by the CBO scores,” she said, predicting House Democratic leaders would finish their work on the merger soon…

“We’re in an excellent place with the cost, given the information that we have,” she said.

“We’re in an excellent place with the cost” will make for a sweet punchline in next year’s GOP attack ads, every last one of which will be casting Madam Speaker in the role of boogeyman. (In fact, it’s already begun.) Meanwhile, Kevin Hassett floats a dark possibility: Is The One’s health-care obsession the real reason he’s delaying a decision on Afghanistan?

The final supplement to the budget under former President George W. Bush included $180 billion, covering the surge in Iraq as well as an additional 30,000 soldiers in Afghanistan. Assuming the per-troop costs are similar, the surge in Afghanistan will likely cost about $100 billion annually.

It is difficult to say how long such an action would take, but at that price, a five-year stay for the additional battalions would cost almost $500 billion, on top of the cost of the forces already on the ground. The final cost would probably be somewhere in between those two numbers…

The sad fact is, the delay of the decision on Afghanistan makes no sense unless it is part of a politically calculated plan to delay revelation of the true costs of the war until after the health-care legislation has been passed.

Intriguing, but the problem with that theory is that he’s already taking intense heat for leaving troops in the field to twist. Is he really going to hold off on making a decision until Christmas, which is when some congressmen think the final vote on ObamaCare may come? I can’t believe it. His numbers on Afghanistan are already tanking. He can’t afford that kind of delay.

The truly sad thing is that those legal residents of the US who do not currently have “insurance” could obtain insurance on a much smaller scale program that would cost a whole lot less that $900 billion, a lot less, admitting for the present there being a government role in providing health insurance.

And in the end there will still be millions of Americans without adequate insurance by their own choice or life-styles under the current Congressional proposal once it is enacted.

These days, common sense seems to be a very uncommon virtue.

But, it is only money, right? And everybody gets to feel good about passing a law. Simply wonderful. /

Do any of these Congress critters, and those who worship them, understand that our current GNP is about $14 trillion, and in decline…and the Obama Administration and Congress since January have essentially committed the United States to well over $10 trillion in expenditures or guarantees?

Paying for all of this, how to pay for this, all of this…that seems to be one of those pesky important items that appears to be lacking.

Forget government budgets…we are mortgaging almost the entire “worth” of all production, all property, all assets held privately and by government, all of it…to do what?

Other than have my great-grand kids sit back and wonder as they scrabble amongst the millions of homeless for a new candle or try to find something to eat what in hell happened in what used to be America in those dark days of 2009-2013, what are we allowing to be done to all of us for the next several generations and beyond?

Has anybody thought through some of the unintended consequences of these monstrosity bills? For example, the edict that insurance companies cannot deny pre-existing conditions and that Baucus plan that calls for penalties for people without insurance that cost less than health insurance. So, if I’m a cynical and/or someone looking out for my own self interest, I don’t take out health insurance and pay the fines if they are implemented. Then, when diagnosed with a condition requiring expensive care, immediately rush out to my closest insurance agent and purchase health insurance to cover my illness. I will have to be covered because the law requires that pre-existing conditions be covered.

Show of hands, how many people think this was deliberate?

HOLY CRAP–LOOK WHAT I JUST FOUND!!!
(Sorry it’s OT)

Litmus Test for Enlistment? [Mark Krikorian]

Apparently, the House version of the defense funding bill “bars enlistment of anyone who has been an active participant in an extremist group,” according to today’s Navy Times. Obviously, the military already excludes dangerous radicals of various sorts through regulation, and should continue to do so, but the point of the bill is to remove discretion by cementing it in legislation and also to delegitimize non-preferred political views (like the DHS report on us dangerous extremists). The article continues:

This would include any groups advocating discrimination based on race, sex, creed, religion or national origin, especially if the group advocates to the use of violence — something recruiters will have to screen for if the bill becomes law.

The violence part is obvious — if you advocate violent change you are by definition an enemy of the Constitution. But what if you just think women shouldn’t be in the military? Or were in a Minuteman chapter armed only with a walkie-talkie but considered a “vigilante” by the people in power in Washington? And how long do you think it will be before “sexual orientation” is added to the list of protected classes?

And the original version of the provision was more sweeping, suggesting what its proponents really had in mind:

As initially passed by the House of Representatives earlier this year, the provision of the defense bill would have prohibited recruitment or retention of anyone associated with an extremist group, whether or not they were an active participant.

The House-passed plan called for the immediate discharge of anyone associated with a hate group. For current service members, the House plan had an exception from immediate discharge if a person had previously renounced their membership in a hate group. No exceptions were allowed for recruits who had been associated with hate groups, so even if they had renounced their membership they would have been barred from enlisting. . . .

As evidence of association with a hate group, the earlier House proposal would have accepted tattoos, e-mail or posting online, written material or attendance at meetings. Those evidence rules are dropped from the final bill, leaving it up to the Defense Department to decide how it will determine association with a group and how it will decide what constitutes “active participation.”

So, posting comments at a web site would get you barred from military service? And what do you want to bet the Southern Poverty Law Center would be hired to consult on how to identify “hate groups”?

The man is is favor of slaughtering innocent babies fully free from the womb. Do we really think he cares about any of us? How unbelievably disfunctional our system of governing is. We are heading for a major conflict or crash within our nation, because we have turned from the world’s model of freedom into a morally corrupt laughingstock, socialist wanabee failure. Suicide is a good word.

I just heard Rendell on Fox and Friends and he told a big fat lie. He said that the feds need to get involved because insurance companies refuse to sell insurance in several states. He said that PA begged United Health to come into PA and they refused. I just do not believe that. No company is going to refuse to do business anywhere they think they can make a dollar. The states regulate that and here is a Democratic Governor lying his behind off.

“We’re very excited by the CBO scores,” she said, predicting House Democratic leaders would finish their work on the merger soon…

What is wrong with all you miracle deficit deniers! OMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.

It’s all about the O - gasm.

“We’re in an excellent place with the cost, given the information that we have,” she said.

Anybody else have the GPS for the headwaters of S#!t Creek? I’d at least want to know where I’m gonna end up.

This is further evidence that Pelosi’ brain is hardwired to her a$$ so that every time she opens her mouth she spouts bull$hit.

Is he really going to hold off on making a decision until Christmas, which is when some congressmen think the final vote on ObamaCare may come? I can’t believe it. His numbers on Afghanistan are already tanking. He can’t afford that kind of delay.

wouldn’t put it pass him…the ditherer-in-chief

When you are already out of control, floor it, have a happy ending.

They just don’t get it. Under $900 billion is still too high. The American people are willing to sacrifice some of their own comforts so that their children actually have a future America. All of this spending only leads to the crumbling of America. This bill is not reform, it is just more spending. More spending that future generations cannot afford.

texasconserv on October 21, 2009 at 7:58 AM

Believe it. On Jan 1, 2010 we will have a robust public option plan AND the announcement that we are not sending more troops to Afghanistan.

Elections have consequences.

It’s great unless you count the additional $250 billion in Medicare reimbursement to docs.

Nothing the government ever does comes in on cost projection.

Nothing.

drjohn on October 21, 2009 at 8:16 AM

So, $900 billion is the new threshold for expensive these days. Stimulus bill was set at $900 bill then chopped back to $787 billion and we’re supposed to think that’s a deal. This is purely adjusting expectations. They set this $900 billion mark to let people gasp at it for a few weeks, then bring their price point just under that and make us think that we’re getting a steal.

I fundamentally reject this stupid dollar game these fools are playing. No matter what the hell they say it is, hell, Obama can go say “not a dime above $900 billion” and it’ll still go over 900 billion.

They are lying, they are stealing and they cannot produce nor deliver anything that they say they are trying to produce nor deliver. It is a shocking display of dishonesty on the part of the US Congress and the White House.

Actual retail price $899 billion. Nancy Pelosi, you win!

Now it’s off to the Showcase Showdown where you can win….A NEW CAR!!!!

Pcoop on October 21, 2009 at 8:42 AM

What does this corrupt, incompetent, lying dingbat know about cost?

Hubby pays for her $20,000 purses and doesn’t every woman have a $100,000 facelift every few years?

Worst Speaker of the House ever, it’s not even close. Just another in a long list of disgraces the Democrat Party has visited upon this nation.

Good news!!!! The cancer hasn’t spread as far as we thought!!! You’ll live (and suffer) a little longer!!!

Two current events tell it all about California!

#1 the state is broke and they can’t accept the changes needed to change it all

#2 34% of Californians approve of Pelosi’s job performance.

The left coast is no longer the golden coast.

Also consider Boxer, Feinstein, Waxman, Maxine
Everyone please pray for these deprived state and its idiots

Michele Bachmann just told Laura Ingraham we need to call both of our senators every day, Mon-Fri and tell them to vote against health care and to permanently de-fund ACORN. She re-emphasized the importance of calling every day.
