Obamateurism of the Day

I blame TOTUS for this fumble at Texas A&M:
I know you’re busy. I know that sometimes, even if you don’t like to admit it, service can feel a bit like a chore.
But if Mallory Myers can repeat last year’s success and get more than 12,000 students to perform more than 20 — a hundred — let me try that again — 1,200 — it’s so much that it boggles the mind — (laughter and applause) — Mallory, 12,000 students and 1,200 service activities in this community –- (applause) — if Mallory can do that, then surely you can round up a few friends to volunteer in your community too.
But just to be fair, let’s also give Obama some credit for what followed:
If President Bush could fly 58 combat missions when he was younger than many of you here today –- and keep on fighting even after he was shot down and nearly captured by the enemy –- then surely you can keep going when your service project gets a little tough. (Laughter.) Don’t you think? (Applause.)
Was TOTUS on a union break?

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Mallory Myer that Obama was speaking of isn’t related to AmeriCorp or such. She’s a junior at Texas A&M and serving as the director of the Big Event.
The Big Event is the largest, one-day, student-run service project in the nation where students of Texas A&M University come together to say “Thank You” to the residents of Bryan and College Station. For the past 27 years Aggie students have participated in this annual event to show their appreciation to the surrounding community by completing service projects such as yard work, window washing, and painting for community members. Although The Big Event has become the largest one-day, student-run service project in the nation, our message and our mission remains the same – to simply say “Thank You.”
The Big Event is a proud member of the Student Government Association at Texas A&M and a recognized student organization of Texas A&M University.
That is 12,000 students doing projects in the community in a single day–every year for the past 27 years.

Put on a three hour Healthcare Reform Tea Party event on the Boston Common last Saturday with a few hundred in attendance. Enlightening the populace of the danger of Commonwealth Care being used as a national model. A smashing success if I do say so myself.
And we collected nearly 200 email addresses for future event notification.
