It’s on: Oprah to interview Palin on eve of book launch

posted at 4:05 pm on October 20, 2009 by Allahpundit

The good news: If sales of her book were already stratospheric, this ought to put them in lunar orbit. The bad news: There’s always a chance of a Couric-esque trainwreck when the ‘Cuda goes live. All the more reason to watch if you’re a liberal, no?

Imagine the ratings. Imagine.

Sarah Palin, who was the “biggest get” of 2008, was frozen out of the Oprah show while running for vice president because Oprah was a big Barack Obama booster.

With Obama in the White House and Palin having a book to sell, she has accepted an invitation to appear on the Nov. 16 episode of Oprah.

This figures to be more than an TV show. It will be an event.

I wonder how much of the chat will be devoted to policy versus standard Oprah human drama fare. (E.g., “How hurt do you feel by Levi Johnston showing off his schwanz in Playgirl?”) If O doesn’t try to trip her up with something wonky, the left will never forgive her. Obvious topics for discussion: Death panels, women in politics, and quitting as governor. Less obvious but no less intriguing: Oprah’s decision not to have her on during the campaign and whether it was fair to accuse The One on the trail of palling around with terrorists. If she gets that question and turns it around on Oprah by wondering why she had the integrity to quit Rev. Wright’s crazy church when our fearless leader didn’t, I might endorse her on the spot.

It’s poll time. Let’s do this.

Blowback

The bad news: There’s always a chance of a Couric-esque trainwreck when the ‘Cuda goes live.

Would that be live-live or edited-live?

Some days, AllahP, you are rather a caricature of yourself.

Going on Oprah won’t work, I believe. Oprah’s in the tank for Obama as she has stated and, as host, Oprah has all the power to shaft Palin and come out looking ‘nice, fair and balanced’.

FNC isn’t fair and balanced, the libs say. But Oprah is?

Put me in an Alaska re-education camp, but I’ll never buy it.

Liam on October 20, 2009 at 4:33 PM

It’s a great opportunity to change some misconceptions about herself.

Hog Wild on October 20, 2009 at 4:30 PM

Change or confirm. That’s why I voted that this is a good idea – either way, soar or crash, maybe we can get some of the internal squabbling about her overwith and either embrace her more fully, or more fully dispense with the idea of her as a viable candidate.

Like everything else, though – probably won’t settle the squabble, lol.

FYI: Palin’s Missouri Dec 2 appearance sold out in 2 hours.

Firebird on October 20, 2009 at 4:28 PM

Eh? What? Where?

JamesLee on October 20, 2009 at 4:33 PM

How many calls do you think will be flying back and forth from the White House to and from Oprah on this one?

michaelo on October 20, 2009 at 4:34 PM

Sure, Oprah’s show will be in front of a live audience, but it too can/will be edited.

Midas on October 20, 2009 at 4:30 PM

Not usually, and never heavily. I don’t think that’s a major concern, actually.

notropis on October 20, 2009 at 4:34 PM

If she’s in the running in 2012, she has to face the enemy.

She needs to ask O why the other O is all weeweed up over Fox News?

stenwin77 on October 20, 2009 at 4:34 PM

If O wants to have Zero’s ratings she best not be out for blood. With the way Zero’s ratings are falling I think Oprah will be fair. She knows Palin will bring huge numbers to her show. If O wants to keep those viewers that turn in for this show she’ll be fair. They both are vying for each other’s audiences. They both bring big numbers, so I don’t see it being catty.

Brat4life on October 20, 2009 at 4:35 PM

The only plus I can see is to try and show how mean and petty Oprah will be? I don’t really see much positive here.

Dark Eden on October 20, 2009 at 4:35 PM

Recent history reminder to AP: That “trainwreck” didn’t happen when the ‘Cuda went live. It happened in the CBS editing room.

I’m just curious which live appearance you consider a “trainwreck.”

notropis on October 20, 2009 at 4:20 PM

I’m a Sarah fan, but that was a disastrous interview she gave…and it wasn’t Katie’s fault. I understand her flippant attitude towards to media (I think by that point we were knee deep in the rumor that Trig was really Bristol’s baby, even though Bristol was pregnant and is was BIOLOGICALLY IMPOSSIBLE for her to be as far along as she was…but the media didn’t become blinded by science.) But I digress….

The interview with Charlie Gibson was an editing hack job, but the interview with Katie was for the most part fair and Sarah screwed that up. Katie gave her the opportunity to show some depth and Sarah blew it.

ramrants on October 20, 2009 at 4:35 PM

What could go wrong?

For starters, Palin could open her mouth.

hicsuget on October 20, 2009 at 4:35 PM

The sad thing is, this Oprah appearance will go along way to improving her standing/image with the daytime TV watching dingbats who make Oprah make up their minds for them from reading material, to which beauty products to buy.

My mother-in-law is a member of this self-help, touchy feely, self improvement meme that Oprah has by the millions.

These are your “Moderates”.

portlandon on October 20, 2009 at 4:35 PM

As President of the Palinista Nation – I make the following statement …

Sarah Palin is not a “China Doll” to be protected. Sarah Palin is not a 1962 Corvette that you keep in an air conditioned garage and never, ever take for a spin on the highway.

Sarah Palin is … like a Honda VFR 1200. You don’t keep her in the garage. You don’t keep her locked up. Sure she’s beautiful but the beauty you can SEE on the outside is only 1/10th of the story. To see what Sarah Palin can REALLY do – you have to put her on the highway and open the throttle up.

Oprah is fine. She’ll get a fair shake and I’ll tell you why …

1. Oprah’s got ratings on the line. This meeting has been talked about – and Oprah got a black eye from not having Palin on during the campaign. Now that’s she’s got her – she’s not going to get another black eye by “ambushing” Sarah Palin. Palin will get a fair shake. Will it be tough? Yes it will. But if Sarah Palin is going to have a voice in this party – she’s got to earn it. I have no fear that she can. I know she can – and will.

2. The ONLY hope that the Democrats have to hold on to their majority is to pray for a major split in the GOP which results in a third party. The ONLY personality out there who can gather up the Liberty Movement and actually have any hope of making a third party work is … Sarah Palin. In the near future – as Democrats become aware of the train bearing down on them – expect the coverage of Sarah Palin to become very sympathetic. They want her pissed off at the GOP – not Democrats – and this includes Oprah.

But the bottom line is this … I wouldn’t put Palin on Olberman or Mathews, because they are hacks – and they are hacks who have no regard for their own self-interests which means they’ll pour a can of gas on themselves and light it on fire if they think they can burn Palin the process. Yes … Oprah is a hack too – but she’s a “hack” with a survival instinct – which makes her much more predictable.

Sarah Palin will be ready. This is going to be fun.

My question is … what will the anti-Palinistas say when she slam-dunks this Oprah appearance? :D

HondaV65 on October 20, 2009 at 4:36 PM

Not usually, and never heavily. I don’t think that’s a major concern, actually.

notropis on October 20, 2009 at 4:34 PM

Interesting; how do you know her show doesn’t usually get edited, and never edited heavily. Do you work there? Know someone who does?

Midas on October 20, 2009 at 4:38 PM

Oddly enough, I think Opera is taking a risk on this one.
How much audience does she stand to lose by being excessively or insufficiently fair to Palin?

Count to 10 on October 20, 2009 at 4:38 PM

There is nothing to prevent Palin from answering anything the way she wants. No campaign, no chubby greasy staffer breathing down her neck about what to and not say.

She’ll do fine because she’ll be herself.

darwin on October 20, 2009 at 4:39 PM

This is a make or break moment.

WisCon on October 20, 2009 at 4:39 PM

While I don’t agree that SP’s viability is gone, one more bad interview and she’s done. I think she can turn around her poll numbers – it’s still a long, long way to the ’12 primaries – and what better way to start than by scheduling a road game at the home of 0bama’s biggest honks. You can’t deny that SP has guts if nothing else.

Lou Budvis on October 20, 2009 at 4:39 PM

Her Facebook page will be over a 1,000,000 by then.

Firebird on October 20, 2009 at 4:39 PM

I voted “eh” for lack of a better choice. But I think it’s a great opportunity for her to shove a sharp spear up O’s bovine stinker.

Oprah is the single most ignorant billionaire media star ever, so there’s nothing she can ask Palin that Palin can’t handle, but I would have said the same of Skankouric. She’ll have the Obama campaign provide her with some snarky questions. That’s fine.

I just hope Palin comes with quiver full of broadheads for Oprah the race-voter. That would be fun.

Jaibones on October 20, 2009 at 4:40 PM

Gutsy move on Palin’s part, hope she does well. I like Palin, but even though I think she got shafted on some of those interviews during the campaign, I was also disappointed that she didn’t do better. She could have been better prepared, and maybe that’s her fault, or maybe it’s her handlers’ fault, I don’t know. I’m on the fence as far as Palin’s political future, I think it will all depend on how she does at events like this one. I’d love for her to shoot up in the popularity polls and become a viable 2012 candidate, because I agree with her policy positions. I’d love to see her in the White House, but I don’t think she could win as things stand right now.

mbs on October 20, 2009 at 4:40 PM

Going on Oprah won’t work, I believe.

Which assumes, you know, she actually wants to run for POTUS. More likeley she’s setting herself up for a media/commentariat/celebutante career, in which case (rare for me), I agree with Honda, above.

I think Ms. Winfrey’s wading into politics was hurtful regardless of who she supported. I believe her viewers don’t want to disagree with her. That she didn’t invite both sides to her show as she had done in the past had to have had an impact. Regardless, I believe she would compound the mistake if she were to have an antagonistic interview with Gov. Palin. There is no upside.

Cindy Munford on October 20, 2009 at 4:41 PM

You are wise, Grasshopper.

This interview would not be happening unless Rahm saw some utility in it for Democrats. He hs seen the polls that show Palin trailing Romney and Huckabee among Republicans. He wants those numbers to go up. He wants Palin to either be the GOP nominee or lead a third party that will guarantee Obama is reelected in 2012.

rockmom on October 20, 2009 at 4:42 PM

There’s always a chance of a Couric-esque trainwreck when the ‘Cuda goes live.

I’m not a dyed-in-the-wool Palin fan, but I find this worse than annoying. The only two “trainwrecks” Sarah Palin had during McCain’s failed presidential campaign were not live and at least in the case of the Gibson interview, were heavily edited to cast her in the most negative light possible. Watch the unedited Gibson interview and tell me the editing wasn’t grossly unfair to her.

She did much better “live and unedited”, like in the VP debate where she clearly beat Biden. She did very well in live interviews she did on NBC and CNN back in June.

Give it a rest, AP.

ProfessorMiao on October 20, 2009 at 4:42 PM

For starters, Palin could open her mouth.

hicsuget on October 20, 2009 at 4:35 PM

At least a flow of words would stream forth instead of the tsumai of ummmm’s and ahhhh’s that gush out of Obama when he opens that mouth of his.

darwin on October 20, 2009 at 4:42 PM

I think she’ll be fine. As other’s have said, it’s Oprah who’s in a no win situation. If she’s mean, she’ll lose ratings. If she’s nice, the Libs’ heads will explode. Between now and then, it will be fun to watch the Libs’ reaction to this.

kingsjester on October 20, 2009 at 4:42 PM

Frankly, if she can’t face Oprah, she should stay home.

If she is to be President or VP, she better be sweet and kick O’s butt!

barnone on October 20, 2009 at 4:43 PM

Let’s be honest, especially among you trolls: Oprah would back Byrd for a WH bid though he’s a former Klan recruiter before she (and YOU) would back McCain.

Who do you libs think you’re kidding?

Liam on October 20, 2009 at 4:44 PM

Sarah will do great, just by being herself, and she’ll win over many new fans/supporters.

beachgirlusa on October 20, 2009 at 4:45 PM

She’s going to have to face hostile interviews someday. Oprah doesn’t have any experience in giving hostile interviews. Oprah also has a huge audience, many (most?) of whom are women, who might be open to the Palin message.

In my opinion, the risk is worth it.

MarkTheGreat on October 20, 2009 at 4:45 PM

Question:

“Who in their right mind would predict Palin’s future political success based on one appearance with a cackling hen named Oprah?

Answer:

Every idiot in the MSM.

fogw on October 20, 2009 at 4:46 PM

This is just positive all the way around.

Either Sarah is ready, will rock it, and we can move forward with her as a serious contender, or she will stay away from the political spectrum and focus only on selling her book, or she will fall flat on her face and bomb.

If either of the last 2 occur then we can count her out of the game and stop wasting time speculating on her viability and intentions.

We don’t have time to waste wondering if it is a turd that we are polishing.

donkichi on October 20, 2009 at 4:46 PM

John the Libertarian on October 20, 2009 at 4:48 PM

In my opinion, the risk is worth it.

MarkTheGreat on October 20, 2009 at 4:45 PM

Why is this a risk? All anyone has to do is watch her interviews and debates when she was running for governor. It’s a risk only if we’re to believe what the communist media says of her.

Unless she jumps up and down on the couch a la Cruise voicing her love of mooseburgers or something I don’t see this as a risk.

But we won’t be running against Obama because Obama isn’t going to be the Democratic nominee.

Bank it.

Conservatism needs to in the mainstream. I applaud the idea of Sarah presenting herself(and conservatism) to the masses who consume pop culture without question. This is going to be great TV and to think that Sarah will “capitalize” from it makes me even happier. Give the conservatives ratings first please:)

It would absolutely be hilarious if Sarah did indeed force an Allah endorsement…but alas I note the qualifier “might” LOL

Allah-Oprah’s decision not to have her on during the campaign and whether it was fair to accuse The One on the trail of palling around with terrorists. As I’ve panned down the thread and gotten a gist of other’s views, I still stand by my crash or burn estmitation up top. That said, I think Palin untethered to RNC operatives will be a boone to her presentation. The RNC establishment/operatives are so fixated on either being Dem-lite or, ceding the field entirely by ther Marquis of Queensbury rules that they are the last people conservatives ought listen to.

I secretly hope that Orca tries slip in a loaded question in hopes of tripping-up Palin, to only have the brunette beauty knock it outta da park!

What is Oprah gonna go after her on? The 2008 campaign? McCain headed that ticket. Her family? Oprah will be very careful with that topic given who her audience is made up of. Death panels? Like Palin won’t knock that one out of the park. Obama’s agenda? Palin will tear him a new one provided she doesn’t pull any punches.

Honestly unless Oprah pulls a Katie Couric and asks a bunch of condescending questions like what does she read, Palin would have to try to blow this opportunity.

My mouth drops just imagining Whoopi, Joy and Sarah on the same stage — open mic.

Stephanie on October 20, 2009 at 4:53 PM

I still won’t watch, but I will be rooting for her. I do not like Oprah, but I think she will be fair enough. I would be surprised if she got all “The View” on her. Though I only saw highlights, I thought she gave W a fair shake (though considering I didn’t watch that in its entirety, I could be wrong). I do think this could be big for her. If she does well, she will improve her image, fair or not. Oprah just reaches lots of demographics through her show and this will matter. Hate to say that though.

I suspect Oprah will dive right into politics and try to debate her with an O-sized attitude. Going into the hdf (human drama fare) as you call it will make Sarah too endearing and a figure women at large (whether career women or stay-at-home-moms) can empathize with. The woman’s really down to earth and charming when you put the hate aside (Palin). I’ll look for Oprah to keep up and feed the ‘divisiveness’ quotient and will be extremely surprised if she does otherwise.

Good lord Allah, I usually figure you are just an ass when it comes to Sarah Palin, or trolling for hits. But good God man, you are just dumb!

Both Perky’s and Charlie Gibson’s pieces were heavily edited pieces, nothing “live” about them.

The question you SHOULD HAVE ASKED, is this:

Will the Oprah get any help from Sam Nunn, or other democrat/communist heavyweights to prepare for her interview?

Another thing, do not fear Tina Fey. All she will do by bringing back her impression schtick is to create another big fat opportunity for Lorne Micheals to invite Palin to host SNL sometime in late Nov or early Dec.

That would be a mouthwatering ratings event for Micheals, could make his season by itself. He is no idiot.

Sarah would come out the winner in that little confrontation.

If she hosts SNL, she will be spectacular.

Brian1972 on October 20, 2009 at 5:10 PM

My prediction – I actually don’t think Oprah will be hostile. Barry’s got 3+ years and in politics, that’s a lifetime. She does not need to do Barry any favors right now.

I don’t think she’s such an idealogue that she’d carry water for Pelosi or Reid – it was all about the O.

She has some making up to do with some of her audience that didn’t appreciate her snub of Palin at the time, and this is an excellent opportunity to do that. In short, I think she’ll be fair because she has everything to gain right now.

If this were 2011, I’d say stay the he!! away from the Oprah show.

Firefly_76 on October 20, 2009 at 5:11 PM

I’m tired of the GOP so-called men (with one or two exceptions) not having the b*lls to stand up and be men. There are plenty of good strong consevative men on this site alone, wish they were in office. So apparently its left to Sarah, Liz Cheney, etc., and women such as Michelle, Laura, Ann and the rest of us conservative women to stand up and fight back.

It’s like this, if she’s going to run for President, she ought to be able to handle Oprah. It’s just that simple. If she screws up the interview and keeps screwing up interviews then let it be, it ain’t meant to happen. The fantasy was nice while it lasted.
But honestly,, I think she’ll do just fine.

Which assumes, you know, she actually wants to run for POTUS. More likeley she’s setting herself up for a media/commentariat/celebutante career, in which case (rare for me), I agree with Honda, above.

That was actually a good comment. I knew you had it in you. I look forward to more of the same. Thanks.

Well I can assure you that if the interview is a disaster for her, that will be one of the excuses of Palin supporters on this site. Of course there will be a bunch of other excuses as well if she does bad.

thphilli on October 20, 2009 at 5:14 PM

And if Palin does very well, we will have you here to tell us she crossed her legs incorrectly, or said “you betcha” twice in 1 hour.

portlandon on October 20, 2009 at 5:22 PM

I will be really surprised if Oprah treats Sarah badly. Oprah has always struck me as a very nice person. Who hasn’t been wrong or misguided in their life? When it comes to Oprah’s support for the Obamas I think that she does not realize what creeps they really are. I think that in time she will realize it. I could be totally wrong here. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Oprah’s highest-rated show ever.

simplesimon on October 20, 2009 at 5:26 PM

She will be great. The Palinhaters are going to have to eat crow, or ignore the reality of what just happened.

I predict the latter.

Brian1972 on October 20, 2009 at 5:27 PM

For starters, Palin could open her mouth.

That’s sounds like a GREAT start to me.
But I’m not a troll, so I’m of inferior capacity to reason.

Firefly_76 on October 20, 2009 at 5:11 PM

Good analysis. The only reason I would worry about this is the off chance this is a favor to Obama to make sure Palin’s book doesn’t succeed, since it will have a huge influence on how she is allowed to define herself. Obama’s autobiography helped him introduce himself to voters and gain trust. He knows how the game is played, by this point.

But Palin actually performs well under pressure when she is allowed to be herself. Remember that Sam Nunn wrote the questions for the Katie Couric interview. The goal was to catch Palin contradicting McCain, weakening the ticket. They were gotcha questions where Palin knew there was a set-up, but the McCain team coached her poorly, possibly sabotaged her, and forced her to keep having to go back, despite the interviewer’s undisguised hostility.

On SNL, Palin did great, endeared herself to both the viewers and the cast alike. All reports from Lorne Michaels, Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin and production staff was that Palin was delightful, gracious and professional.

I don’t think Oprah will be a cakewalk, but I am optimistic that Sarah Palin will do well. If anything, I think they’re still trying to figure out what her appeal is all about. She’s still very popular.

Were you born an ignorant tool, or did you take lessons?

Brian1972 on October 20, 2009 at 5:28 PM

1. Oprah and Axelrod are war-gaming this as we speak.

2. Planted protester(s) in the audience

3. Some Palin “scandal” will appear 1-2 days prior that she will have to address

4. SNL will rework her actual words into another skit.

5. Levi will be on every news show for the 2-3 days before and after.

faraway on October 20, 2009 at 5:29 PM

Sarah needs to check and see if the “interview” is just between the two of them.. A one on one….
Do not show up if there is a gang on the show…
A one on one,ONLY!!!! Just do a trust but verify, thingie…

kingsjester on October 20, 2009 at 5:30 PM

Oprah should ask if Palin was shocked to find out that NAFTA had only 3 members.

simplesimon on October 20, 2009 at 5:30 PM

For Pete’s sake, AP. It’s not a “big interview”, and it’s not about either “policy” or “standard Oprah human drama”.

It’s about her book. There will cerainly be questions about her step-down as Gov, to which Palin will give the standard reply. There will be probably be questions about Letterman and death panels. Palin will deflect those quickly and not dwell there.

There will be some prolonged discussion about Facebook, both in general, and as Palin’s messenger of choice.

I think that what Palin wants, and that Oprah will facilitate, is a chance for Palin to show that she is not the wicked witch of the west (or north). She will come across as a genuine person who acts according to her convictions, but abides by the rule of law.

I don’t see the downside to this. I don’t think Oprah will pull the “gotcha” question.

And I hope that Sarah points out that that foolish woman’s school was founded through the vision and funding of a private citizen giving her own money to what she saw fit, not through the bureaucratic waste of corrupt politicians.

Going on Oprah won’t work, I believe. Oprah’s in the tank for Obama as she has stated and, as host, Oprah has all the power to shaft Palin and come out looking ‘nice, fair and balanced’.

Agreed. However, if Palin walks away with a 50/50 draw of Oprah\’s audience – she has a leg up on the GOP field and Obamu in 2012.
