Video: Is this Anita Dunn’s favorite clothing store?

posted at 2:55 pm on October 19, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Well, it does combine two of her favorite people, Barack Obama and Mao Zedong. What’s more, this report doesn’t come from Dunn’s bête noir, Fox News, but from that highly reliable news organization, Reuters.  Maybe ObaMao sells gift cards, which would come in handy for Dunn’s going-away party at the White House when the Obama administration belatedly realizes the folly of demonizing Fox, especially now that even Helen Thomas notes what a dumb idea it is.  And hey, it beats a Che t-shirt …. barely.

“It gets people thinking.”

It certainly does here.

I’m not going to give you a hard time like others but, in no sense whatsoever, can Mao be considered “Great”.

He was a mass murderer of epic proportions. You wouldn’t call Hitler great, or Stalin and Lenin great. Why even insinuate that Mao is great.

Quoting Mao is one thing. Someone who detested the murderer of 50-70 million people could still quote him to show what kind of a person he was.

But saying he is one of your two favorite philosophers, as Anita Dunn did as she read off a prepared speech, is another thing.

That being said…when I think of names like Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Castro, Chaves, Gueverra, Atilla, Ivan….I would hardly use an adjective like “great” to describe them. Yet — here’s the difference. Hitler killed 6-12 million people and lost. Mao killed 40-70 million people and won.

So is that why it’s better to quote Mao? Because Hitler was an underachiever by comparison?

He’s now getting TV time. You can imagine the blogs about that.

He’s just a faux-media jerk.

No content. No real sense of the pulse of the Country.

Nothing to offer.

Ditto for what I’ve seen from LGF.

Good grief. Great people are often quoted, regardless of their politics.

Mao is “great people”? An impressive murderer, but that generally doesn’t constitute greatness.

And if she had just quoted Mao, I doubt very much would have been made of it. The fact that she said he was one of her two favorite philosophers makes it important.

If she had said Stalin was one of her favorite philosophers would that have made a difference to you?

Is this Anita Dunn’s favorite clothing store?

Yep, it is:

Find Dunn’s quote. Change Mao to Hitler or Stalin.

And it becomes something she’d (or anyone) never say. Why? Therein lies the problem.

If someone told you Person A was their “favorite political philosopher” would it be reasonable to assume that that someone viewed Person A favorably?

We can give Ms Dunn the benefit of the doubt and assume that she’s simply interested in Mao’s political ideas without any support or sympathy for what he did. This just means she’s interested in the ideas of a hardcore Communist.

This comes across perfectly innocent to you? No evidence of a pattern whatsoever?

Come on now.

Dunn said she admired his “philosophy”. Isn’t that pretty much like saying, “I’d like to apply his philosophy to the world I live in”? Ah, yeah.

This isn’t as off the cuff as saying, “I like his shirt” .
