Rove: Obama building an enemies list

posted at 8:48 am on October 19, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

What does Fox News’ Karl Rove and Baltimore Sun’s David Zurawik have in common? Both of them have called the Obama administration’s weird war on Fox News Channel “Nixonian.” In this clip, Rove — who knows a thing or two about being in a beleaguered White House — answers Terry McAuliffe’s defense of Barack Obama that a little demonization is perfectly acceptable in order to get health reform passed:

“Undignified” is the least of the problems. Nixon built his enemies list as an extension of his general paranoia, but it took a little longer than the first few months of his presidency for that to reveal itself in that way. The bunker mentality that produces this kind of thinking reflects a failure of the President himself to lead, and a search for scapegoats. The public-relations mission of Anita Dunn and others serves no other real purpose except to have someone handy to blame when Obama’s agenda fails.

The truth is that Obama has lost the public debate on health-care reform, and he’s left with only the option of slamming something through Congress that will be incredibly unpopular, and then blame its unpopularity on Fox News. That’s undignified, Nixonian, and futile, all at the same time.

My gym never has Fox News on the large tvs. I’ve changed a couple when I’m the only person. Luckily most of the equipment have their own tv screen. I was so happy the other day when the guy on the treadmill next to me was also watching Beck. I have never seen anyone watching Beck before.

They’re intimidated.

Put on FNC = you must be a red neck, ignorant racist, etc.

This is what the Left does to isolate and intimidate the opposition. It is also reflects of how each side reacts. If I saw some idiot watching Olbermann, I’d just think to myself “what an idiot”… but lefties will hassle you even if you’re just watching Shep Smith.

There’s one advantage to the new politics. The White House elevates the message of those whom it personally disparages.

unclesmrgol on October 19, 2009 at 9:55 AM

I still don’t like, that while it elevates FNC, it is beneath the dignity of the office and is embarrasing and shameful. And it hits home every time I see the POTUS walk by a Marine saluting him. Wish one of those marines would lose it and smack him upside his head. LOL

Holy freaking crap! Has anyone else checked out the White House website yet? I have never seen anything like this in all my years; from Carter to Bush this is a new experience for me. This is ridiculous!

txaggie on October 19, 2009 at 10:02 AM

I hope Rove and Wallace checked their wrists after the interview to see if they still had watches.

I’m sure each of them showered immediately afterwards.

TXUS on October 19, 2009 at 10:02 AM

Rove is being overly nice – I’m not sure why, exactly. What The Precedent and his administration are doing is so far past Nixon as to make your head spin. Nixon never came close to this. And the fight against Fox News, coming right from the White House, is not even the first … not even close. Fox is just the newest White House in a long list they have gone after.

This White House respects nothing (that’s by design) and acts as no other White House ever has even thought to. Precedential, indeed.

progressoverpeace on October 19, 2009 at 10:05 AM

So besides reading speeches off of teleprompters and accepting awards, it seems that the president has a third skill – making lists.

I am just in awe of what the president brings to the table.

Some day, I have a dream we can elect someone who knows what the hell it is he’s doing, or is that too much to ask?

NoDonkey on October 19, 2009 at 10:08 AM

Why do these idiots keep referring to FoxNews as a “station”–like it’s WKRP or something? It’s happened consistently enough among these talking heads that it’s clearly a talking point. Is this supposed to demean FNC by making it seem like a Public Access channel? How stupid is that?

And in case you’re wondering how a Terry McAuliffe lost to a nobody like Creigh Deeds for the Virigina Democratic nomination for governor, he refers to the “chyron”(the onscreen text that appears on TV), as the “cry-on.” Yes, Terry, cry on. No one’s listening.

The Cable News Wars will be televised just not on any network anyone watches:)

This morning Lou Dobbs canceled on Imus In The Morning, because CNN would not let him appear. The Reporter Boycott of Fox News Networks. Video FBN.

Here is the thing if CNN and MSNBC folks don’t show up on Fox Networks, I won’t be watching them at all. So how is this helping those network’s ratings? Oh I guess I will watch inferior DNC propaganda channel/sarc. The reason people are not watching now is because they know that CNN, and MSNBC are nothing more than Democrat Party Arms. I already don’t watch MSNBC ,the only thing I WAS watching was Lou Dobbs on CNN.

Imus has already beat CNBC’s in the ratings, and FBN is on half the carriage. MSNBC and CNN are worried about Imus’s ratings on FBN but it wasn’t their on air talent that drives his ratings….gonna miss you Lou but this is what happens when you work for the CommunistCollectiveNetwork.

Rove lets it slip out – he remains in the hip pocket of the seditious US Chamber of Commerce.

And make no mistake, Rove had his enemies list. Those who had the unmitigated gall to suggest that we should seal our southern border and enforce US immigration laws were most definitely persona non grata. Barred from any influence or access. Rove is such a hypocrit. And its because of he and his boss that we’re in the mess we’re in now. These 2 sent Reagan Democrats back over to the democrat party in droves!! Shut Up Karl!

Dave Rywall on October 19, 2009 at 10:26 AM

The White House loves this type of discussion.
Instead of Fox discussing why an Obama program or decision is a failure, Fox is spending it`s news talk show time talking about Fox.
With finite minutes on a talk show, the White House would rather Fox talk about Fox than Fox talk about Obama the failure.

Tip to Fox: Keep engaging the White House, give dissenting views, question the actions of the White House, show the truth and let the White House do the talking (and whining) about Fox.

jay12 on October 19, 2009 at 10:36 AM

That’s right. And the proper response to any of the drones trying to level that argument against Beck should be to ask the Precedent’s soldiers what they think about the racist crypto-church that The Precedent attended for decades, and the racist moron whose sermon became the title for one of THe Precedent’s books (whoever actually wrote “Audacity”), not to mention the cute pieces of “Dreams” (like ‘white man’s greed drives a world in need’ – though they can argue that The Precedent certainly didn’t write that book and, therefore, cannot be held responsible for its racist content). The little bit about having a moron pine for a time “when white will embrace what’s right” at the friggin’ inauguration, as well as dropping a won case against the Black Panthers, …

There is no question about The Precedent’s racism. No one should let these morons get away with trying to paint anyone as “extreme” for pointing out what is obviously true. If they want to defend The Precedent, let them defend and stand up for Trinity Church and the racist bile that it lives on.

Obama, like every leftist, is a believer in rigid economic class distinctions that cannot be overcome except by political change, i.e. by collective political action, be that through elections or by violent revolution. The man is incapable of seeing that class distinctions in a free and open market have no real meaning, except as tools for political leverage. Class distinctions are political things, not economic, and must be enforced by governments if they are to be useful for politicians like himself.

Thus, Obama is in the business of keeping poor people poor, oppressed people oppressed, and ignorant people ignorant for the sake of his own political fortunes. He’s a shyster. A con man like every communist, fascist and tinpot dictator that’s come before him.

The Precedent is a racist. That is as clear as day and most of America knows it. Go read his books (as it’s clear you haven’t) and then you can find out how he loves marxists, too. Of course, you don’t have to read the book he claimed to write, but didn’t, to find out that The Precedent loves marxists or is a racist, just look at the people surrounding him and his insane policies.

set of FCC regulations that will put a serious burden on right-leaning talk radio. While Fox may be the administrations’ current talking point, talk radio may be the first to be hit with new, debilitating, regulations.

I’m going to keep saying this until I get kicked off HA or taken to a camp somewhere in the desert…The WH has been taken over by COMMUNISTS…All of this is shadow dressing for the complete takeover of media etc…How many of you think these people aren’t Communists…Is there ANY doubt..ANY?…Enemies list my butt…It’s a list of those first to go to some camp…or worse…This isn’t hyperbole…If you think these COMMUNISTS won’t start throwing people in camps or holes in the ground..you are wrong..A silenced media is the key step…FNC will be targeted in some manner, oh wait…it already is….then one day the power goes out…technical difficulties you see..then FNC just simply isn’t on anymore…then the blogs are targeted..oh wait….they already are…hmmmm..see any pattern here…keep your head in the sand…The WH has been taken over by COMMUNISTS….these are hard men who play for keeps…noooo..not the pansies on TV…noooo….other men in the shadows……hard men who have one aim….COMMUNISTS

It does remind one of Chavez doesn’t it.

Beck should do a compare and contrast… The question really is will this kind of thing continue in America? It is hard to concentrate and be diligent all the time.

The left is smart to do everything at break neck speed and they never ever let up. I’m getting weary.

JJKRN on October 19, 2009 at 10:24 AM

I know it is difficult for many people to wrap their head around this, but this is true. I’m writing my senators this morning (Inhofe and Coburn, two of only a handful who try to fight this bunch)and asking them where are the GOP out fighting this takeover of our country by communists. If they are not listening to Glenn Beck, they need to be. GOP, get your head out of your butts. We’ve got to start calling these people what they are. We have to stop this!

silvernana on October 19, 2009 at 12:03 PM

That said, I can’t imagine what would be so big to make this adminstration run scared. There has been so much corruption, so many lies, so many unsavory ties with terrorists and criminals, so many unethical associations with racists and despots… What is still out there that would trump all that we’ve already seen?

I can’t ignore them. It’s the only chance I have with confront the idiots who supported and elected and continue to support the man and administration that’s getting us killed. They’ve got blood on their hands becasue they’re playing politics with the war they said was so easy to figure out, a blind man could see it. If they would have paid attention when McCain cleaned his frigging clock in the questions about Afghanistan. “Er, yes, John, I agree with everything you said. But, er, I know I can, uh, run the war more efficiently.”

He’s had going on three months to make up his mind on a report he knew the details of for a half a year. obama, make a decision or put someone else in charge.

BTW, where’s the liberal freaking outcry about billions taken from war operation’s defense funding? Weren’t you bastar*s all so concerned with our vehicles? Didn’t you cry that Dragon Scale armor was better and the Bush Administration was fighting the war without taking care of the soldier? idn’t you FREAKING HOUND HIM 24/7 FOR EIGHT GOD DAMN YEARS ABOUT THE WAY HE RAN THE WAR???

Drywall, you guys are a freaking joke. Only the jokes on us. We were nothing but pawns to obama and liberal a$$wipes like you. Even Medea Benjamin thinks we should stay now. Maybe she can talk obama in to making a decision.

One can argue that Obama is the amalgamation of the worst of a number of presidents.

He’s got Nixon’s paranoia.
He’s got Carter’s messiah complex.
He’s got FDR’s domestic agenda.
He’s got Clinton’s national security indecisiveness.
He makes gaffes like Ford.

Bambi’s Admin. is building up a back story for when the real clampdown starts.
Look for some form of legislation to pass that gives the Government an inroad to silence or hobble criticism (and it won’t be just Fox News), probably along the lines of a rebranded “Fairness Doctrine.”
“Undignified” or “petty” or whatever you want is all beside the point, they could care less what you call it.
This is just laying the foundation for an end to freedom of speech.

Holy freaking crap! Has anyone else checked out the White House website yet? I have never seen anything like this in all my years; from Carter to Bush this is a new experience for me. This is ridiculous!

Whoa. just WHOA. The White House is engaged in a FLAME WAR on the internet?

Are they serious? Oh. My. God.

I do not know which is more embarrassing – the nit picky points they are “refuting” from Fox News reporting (mostly Glen Beck) or the fact that the WHITE HOUSE is posting a juvenile and paranoid “defense” against a specific media outlet on its website.

They can’t figure out what to do with a real war, but put this much time into a flame war on the ‘net.

I can’t stop cringing.

Why do people insist on calling this “Nixonian”? This is NOT regular American politics, regular dirty tricks in the White House. This is classic totalitarian socialism = fascism, like Chavez or Mussolini. Why won’t you call it what it is?!
