Rasmussen: ObamaCare support dropping again
posted at 12:55 pm on October 19, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
After the CBO gave the Baucus summary a preliminary score of being deficit-neutral, the Obama administration hoped for a reversal in widespread opposition to the ObamaCare overhaul. Rasmussen’s latest poll of likely voters shows the opposite has happened. Opposition has firmed up at 54%, while support has dropped four points over the last two weeks:
Now that the Senate Finance Committee has passed its version of health care reform, 42% of voters nationwide favor the health care reform plan proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats. That’s down two points from a week ago and down four from the week before.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 54% are opposed to the plan.
The numbers have been remarkably stable throughout the debate. With the exception of bounces following presidential television appearances, support for the plan has stayed in a very narrow range from 41% to 46%. Currently, 24% Strongly Favor the legislative effort and 42% are Strongly Opposed.
While voters are skeptical of the plan working its way through Congress, 54% say that major changes are needed in the health care system. Sixty-one percent (61%) say it’s important for Congress to pass some reform.
In the wake of Obama’s speech to Congress, the ObamaCare effort won a brief moment of majority support, 51% to 46%. Opposition rose as high as 56% two weeks later, and had bounced around in the low- to mid-50s ever since. The current 54% is about the average since Congress went on its August recess. The 42% support rating is the second-lowest in that period, after a 41% recorded three weeks ago. Even in the summer, with all of the town hall dramas across the nation, it only got to 42% once; support mainly remained in the mid-40s.
The internals of the poll show big problems for Democrats who wind up supporting it in Congress. Both men and women oppose it, the latter by eleven points (54%/43%). Only the youngest category of voters support it; majorities in all other age demographics oppose ObamaCare by wide margins, including 18 points among thirtysomethings (58%/40%) and 20 points for fortysomethings (58%/38%). Independents still oppose it by similar margins, 56% to 38%. Among income demographics, only those earning under $20K per year support it; majorities oppose it now in every other income category.
The stat of the day from the Rasmussen internals? Government workers oppose it by a majority, 55%/43%, with 46% strongly disapproving. When statists can’t even get government workers to get on board the statist bus, they’ve really overshot their intrusion in the private sector.

When I’m unemployed, I probably could set up a HSA. But the issue is that I’m kicked back to a high risk Texas group policy that would cost about $2600/month for my family.

–I haven’t seen anyone write on this blog that they’re here illegally. And thanks for not spitting directly on me.
Jimbo3 on October 19, 2009 at 2:40 PM
An old movie line: where I spit, no grass grows.
And do you mean from your response that you would only turn in Hot Air illegals and scofflaws? So selective in the cause of….er.. universal health care. heh
coastiehooligan on October 19, 2009 at 2:52 PM
Really, how are you stooges for the National Socialist Democrat Party going to figure out who to turn in?
Fake8 on October 19, 2009 at 2:53 PM
Hawk, AnninCa is correct. The IRS will handle that whole deal on your tax form. If you don’t have what HR3200 defines as “Acceptable Coverage” the IRS will fine you. These pansy ass trolls are baiting the thread.
Ann, Did you read HR3200?
dogsoldier on October 19, 2009 at 2:56 PM
The numbers really don’t matter, they’re going to ram it down our throats no matter how many are for or against it. It’s the Chicago “way” and we’re seeing it in all its radiant beauty.
Might just as well bend over and grease up….it’s gonna be a rough one.
GoldenEagle4444 on October 19, 2009 at 2:56 PM
So the uninsured in America aren’t costing us way to much? They aren’t a huge reason why medical coverage costs so much? There goes one of the lefts biggest reasons for passing Obama care right out the window.
Ampersand on October 19, 2009 at 2:57 PM
What would you know about the “big picture”? You’ve never seen it. You wouldn’t last two minutes in it.
I invite you to though. According to your president, they’re dropping Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and you’ll be all set. I’ve got an M4 and a set of ACUs in your prissy little size.

coastiehooligan on October 19, 2009 at 2:52 PM
–No; I mean I would probably turn in someone who would write/otherwise tell me that they aren’t complying with this law. Wouldn’t matter if it were on this site or elsewhere.
Jimbo3 on October 19, 2009 at 2:58 PM
why don’t you get Obama to put more attention toward solving THAT little problem instead of changing a HUGE portion of out country to screw millions (but help you.)
Ampersand on October 19, 2009 at 3:00 PM
Maybe not. Some of the dems are radical scum, but none of them want the gravy train to end. They know this bill is pure poison, by virtue of the numbers that showed for town halls. Their advisers are telling them the same thing.
If the GOP can stall them in the Senate, it will wither and die.
dogsoldier on October 19, 2009 at 3:00 PM
Figure out how to pay it. I managed to save and raise 180,000 dollars to backup our insurance to cover my daughters kidney transplant.
Pretty good for a toothless, military, race-car fan. Huh, SimpleSimon?
hawkdriver on October 19, 2009 at 3:01 PM
Look, I know you are stupid, in fact criminally stupid, but there is indeed a difference.
The health care situation is happening NOW! We are actually debating this NOW! This is all happening in REAL TIME.
On the other hand, any poll matching up candidates for a contest that is THREE YEARS AWAY, is not only meaningless, but bordering on ridiculous.
Three years is an eternity in politics.
In 2007, Huckabee, who finished second in the 2008 primaries, wasn’t even being polled, and Rudy Giuliani who was by far the front runner, flamed out almost instantly when the actual campaign started!
In 1978 Regan was supposed to get destroyed by the competition as well, and yet, look how that turned out.
The health care debate is on going, so this poll is actually relevant. Polls on the 2012 election, not so much.
gary4205 on October 19, 2009 at 3:01 PM
so the problem isn’t doing something illegal or costing the country millions, but it’s talking about it on HorAir? You didn’t put your foot in your mouth AT ALL!! nope…

Dimbo3 wants everybody else to pay for his poor health choices, reckless life choices, and his parents poor genetic heritage which 200 years ago would have doomed him to be another statistical death on Darwin’s evolutionary scale.

Obviously you are bummed about your coming unemployment. Trust me I can relate, try to be a bit more optimistic and not alienate the segment of the country that will try to help you more then others. You are living in a state with better employment opportunities then most.
Cindy Munford on October 19, 2009 at 3:04 PM
Actually, some of universally keep saying polls all lie and they do. Hence the adage: “There are lies, damned lies, and statistics!”
Having studied stats and polling at some length in college (using my GI bill tyvm) I learned all the evile ways pollsters deliver the outcomes they are PAID for. LOL!

Ann can’t be bothered with something as tedious as reading. It’s about her and how she feeeels.
katy the mean old lady on October 19, 2009 at 3:07 PM
Jimbo, thanks for the clarification but good luck getting a piece of what truly does look like the IRS’s action. The house always wins.
Your situation is one more argument for opening up competition for all companies in all states, buying our own health insurance and not have it tied to our employers. Period. That’s a bill I would support.
coastiehooligan on October 19, 2009 at 3:08 PM
Thanks, but I don’t defend them and they owe me no thanks. If anything were to happen to me or anyone in my crew, (because we’re all getting sick of this shit) we would have died in spite of them. They are no Americans that I would lift a finger to individually defend. They’re scum to me.
hawkdriver on October 19, 2009 at 3:08 PM
Umm, that’s not the big picture. But I’ll take your word for it anyway. You really need to get a grip.

—I do thank him for his service. But hawkdriver is acting like he has the right to demand that the country do what he wants, rather than working through the political process. And thanks Cindy. Texas is in better shape than almost all of the rest of the country. And Ampersand, the problem is not posting on Hot Air. The problem is saying/writing that they aren’t/won’t comply. –The Baucus bill does create health care exchanges at the state and national level and does allow companies to sell across state lines. (There are alot of complexities in selling insurance across state lines, though.)

Riiiiight. And that’s why Public Policy Polling, an organization that works for Dem/liberal organizations with the exception of one, has Republicans leading in polls.

thanks for clearing that up. I thought you had a problem with people breaking the law and costing you money. Now I know your problem is with people exercising their free speech.
–I support free speech 100%. If someone wrote on a blog they had run away from a hit and run accident that killed someone, or wrote on a blog that they had scored $200K through insider trading in advance of a deal being announced, what would you do with that information?
Jimbo3 on October 19, 2009 at 3:16 PM
When you consider those who favor socialized medicine, doctors who suck, people looking for something free, and the hand-ringers, support is understandable.

But, Jimbo, the Baucus bill does so much MORE. It’s the Sham-Wow of health care bills!
And Hawkdriver: I have my father’s flag. I’m married to a man who took the oath for life. You have my gratitude and my comprehension of that big picture.
coastiehooligan on October 19, 2009 at 3:21 PM
Isn’t all this whining kind of silly? When you lose the presidency and both houses of congress you kind of get what you get – right? You guys need to grow up.

No you stupid fuck. Hawkdriver does not think he’s above the law. He just thinks that when some lazy POS that can’t take care of himself thinks he has the right to turn another American into authorities because it deprives said snitch of something he wants, Hawkdriver just feels like maybe it’s not the same country he signed on to defend.
And you’re so God Damned Cavalier about the way you say you’ll do it. Who the fuck do you think you are? Who do any of you democrats think you are to take what I earn, for all intent and purposes, at gun point? How about if we all decide that the aches and pains we all live and work with become…just…too…much, and we start looking for that free time at home handout. Who the hell will pay for your free damn government giveaways then, huh?
BTW Jimbo, I have a fellow officer that serves in my little detachment here with recurring skin cancer. He’s sweating out a biopsy done just last week. But he here in Kandahar, working and serving. What your damn excuse?

venividivici on October 19, 2009 at 3:34 PM
Hahahahahahaaha!
Kay Baby can’t even make up her mind when she is going to ditch the Senate! She sees the handwriting on the wall. A lot of us have an issue or two with Rick Perry, but compared to KBH, or anyone else out there so far, he is light years better.
As for “turning people in” you are beyond ridiculous.
And while I feel for folks with pre-existing conditions, I’m not in the best of health, a law requiring companies to cover them makes no sense at all.
You can’t go wreck your car THEN go buy auto insurance. You can’t blow the engine up in your car and THEN buy that extended warranty the dealer tried to sell you!
So why does it make sense that someone can wait until they need health insurance before they buy it?
Forcing Americans to buy ANYTHING like health insurance is unconstitutional. And don’t give me the car insurance argument. Owning and driving a car is a privilege, not a right. You have to earn a driving license before you can drive, and since cars can do damage, you have to maintain a reasonable amount of insurance to protect OTHER PEOPLE, should you have an accident.
On the other hand, you have the communist government of Obama telling you that simply because you are alive, you MUST buy health insurance.
Good luck with that.
Texas, and many other states are already working on legislation that would tell Obama to stuff it, exempting Texans from it. If this Obamanation actually passes, it will be tied up in the courts for years.
In fact, even without the states input, my guess is any individual forced to buy insurance would have a case against the government because ObamaCare is unconstitutional.
There already are risk pools set up in Texas, and other states for folks such as yourself, to get insurance. So you can already get taken care of without destroying the nation and sparking a Civil War!

I wonder why young people continue to support it? Right now a healthy young person can get a high deductible plan for less than $100 a month…they are fooling themselves if they think the Obama administration will give them a better deal. But then I bet if you ask them for some specifics you would find that most of those young people are oblivious to the details of the various plans. They think government health care=free health care.

I think Obama is the most left leaning president we have ever had.
I am not afraid of righties rebelling in a violent way, in fact the most violent group in America can be seen killing each other in the streets of Chicago on You Tube.
Sad but true, we have grown accustomed to that kind of violence and it is far more dangerous.
Terrye on October 19, 2009 at 3:49 PM
From that I can see you have not read much written by our founding fathers. They wrote much worse about and directly to each other!
How many presidents have been burned in effigy? What would happen if someone did that today? I do not find the answers to those questions comforting.
dogsoldier on October 19, 2009 at 3:50 PM
And yet, I continue to express just how I feel. LOL*
Let me give you some advice. Give it up.
I am not one who imagines relationships with words on a computer screen. Therefore, I do not care about snark attacks.
You just aren’t that important in my life.
So give up the idea that you are. I don’t care what you think.
I repeat. Any poster calling for violence should be turned into authorities.
If the blog doesn’t do this? They could find themselves in a huge, huge national scandal if that person turns out to be truly “postal.”
I’d never risk it, personally.
AnninCA on October 19, 2009 at 3:52 PM

But then, I really, really abhor any form of violence.
Maybe some of you justify that.
I do not.
AnninCA on October 19, 2009 at 3:54 PM
BTW, I also disagree with this. FDR was, by far, more left-leaning.
And wildly popular with Americans.
AnninCA on October 19, 2009 at 3:55 PM
“Pith helmets”, that is intimidating.
If the Left wants to treat politics as “bloodsport” (and all indications are that they do), I’m more than happy to return the favor.
When the Roman Republic broke down, there was an episode where a Senator was killed and his body set on fire in the Senate chamber. I’ll get nervous about things when we reach that point. Until then, this is nothing.

Ok, While I agree with your sentiment and over all point… I will say this. My cell phone and my high speed internet are essential. I am deaf, and to do my job I have to have quick relatively simple communication. This is provided through Video Phone (which requires high speed internet) and my cell phone. I can’t use the land lines at my work. If I give up cable I still won’t be able to afford insurance. Sorry, I haven’t found one that has $40 premiums. Especially if they might buy me Hearing Aid’s once Which cost about 5000 dollars EACH. And that’s not cuz I want a Cadillac hearing aid but because the “cadilac” hearing aids are the only ones that will work for me.
Oh and hearing aid’s generally last about 5 year. I’ve needed them, and not the cheap ones either, since I was nine. Don’t get me into ear molds, tubing, and batteries.

Yep Simple Simon, I must be crazy.
You know, I see it every day here; life and death. It’s a world you will never understand. You will never know what it means to try to pull a bit more power out of a machine that by the laws of physics just can’t do it, to get a bleeding soldier to a hospital 5-6 minutes quicker. You have no idea what it means to be the one who says when someone lives or dies; to be the one who decides, who has a trigger pulled on them and who gets away. You have no idea what it means to sacrifice. To see and be part of families split. To have to leave loved ones behind in a hospital when your country tells to ruck back up and move out. And you do all of this for some naive notion that you serve the greatest country in the world and the greatest people even assembled into a society.
You’re not it. You’re not even close to it. People like you aren’t deserving of any freedoms paid for in blood; when you’re so willing to deprive others of them. When your party is the one who decides to only be tolerant of what you believe is worthy to be tolerated; you’re not deserving of liberty. You’re just not worthy and I’m old and tired of giving my energy knowing that it benefits liberals like you.
I’m done.

Easy there, Pilgrim. I didn’t say nothing about no guns. You’re so nutty…
simplesimon on October 19, 2009 at 4:01 PM
Well then, ban yourself already.
katy the mean old lady on October 19, 2009 at 4:02 PM
There’s a very, very simple way to deescalate. Tell Obama and Co. to stop shoving crap down people’s throats. You think people’s anger just came from out of the blue? You really think that most people have nothing better to do than have to react to the political class loading up debt upon debt on them?
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, right? Which is the action and which is the reaction here?

Ugh, why give the trolls the satisfaction of replying to them? I’ll admit its fun sometimes but I want to read different points of view and debate with sane, mature, adult conservatives on this site. Its annoying to see so many responses to lib troll inanity. And its an exercise in futility trying to deal reasonably and rationally with unreasonable and irrational people.

I would never have signed up voluntarily when I was younger.
Jimbo3 on October 19, 2009 at 3:59 PM
Quel surprise.
kingsjester on October 19, 2009 at 4:03 PM
Ann, the amount of time you spend here getting told how ignorant you sound speaks volume about how much you “don’t care.”
You’re just another ignorant lib who believes the MSNBC meme that we are all violent right wingers. Look at how violent the 9/12 march was!! Horror! Look at all the violence at the town halls!

AnninCA
Your “I abhor any form of violence” tells me you’ve never had to confront it directly it no matter what backstory you may post after I call you on this. Consider yourself blessed.
No worries here.
coastiehooligan on October 19, 2009 at 4:04 PM
LMAO
beachgirlusa on October 19, 2009 at 4:06 PM
You mean Jimbo3? I thought you agreed with him? He’ll be fine when he knows how things will work out for himself and his family.
Cindy Munford on October 19, 2009 at 4:08 PM
Yep, he’s right Ann. It was Jimbo3 not Simple Simon. My bad. You still know where to find me.
hawkdriver on October 19, 2009 at 4:08 PM
No, the crazy guy who likes to complain about his job. I think he’s ‘done’.
simplesimon on October 19, 2009 at 4:09 PM

But you are not too old to join Obama’s private snitch army.
We can already tell you would never defend OUR country.
