News media fall for climate-change hoax
posted at 1:36 pm on October 19, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Not the hoax you’d think, which is that the Earth is doomed, doomed! to a fiery torment of heatwaves thanks to the release of CO2 in energy production and transportation, but a hoax by an environmental group that produced a fake press release from the US Chamber of Commerce. The USCC has had a number of its members resign over the group’s opposition to cap-and-trade legislation in Congress, and the hoax announcement stated that the USCC had reversed itself and now endorsed cap-and-trade. Layers of editors and fact-checkers at mainstream news outlets apparently couldn’t be bothered to check the official USCC website for confirmation:
In a dramatic shift, the Chamber of Commerce announced Monday that it is throwing its support behind climate change legislation making its way through the U.S. Senate.
Only it didn’t.
An e-mail press release announcing the change is a hoax, say Chamber officials.
Several meeting organizations fell for it.
A CNBC anchor interrupted herself mid-sentence Monday morning to announce that the network had “breaking news,” then cut away to reporter Hampton Pearson, who read from the fake press release.
Pearson quickly followed up with a second report saying the “so-called bulletin” was an “absolute hoax.” Smelling a rat, CNBC’s Larry Kudlow demanded to know whether the White House had been involved.
In a story posted Monday morning, Reuters declared: “The Chamber of Commerce said on Monday it will no longer opposes climate change legislation, but wants the bill to include a carbon tax.”
Kudlow’s wild accusation did not come completely out of left field, if you’ll pardon the pun. Politico reported earlier today that the White House has plotted to “neuter the Chamber,” and this certainly had that effect, even temporarily:
The White House and congressional Democrats are working to marginalize the Chamber of Commerce — the powerful business lobby opposed to many of President Barack Obama’s first-year priorities — by going around the group and dealing directly with the CEOs of major U.S. corporations.
Since June, senior White House officials have met directly with executives from more than 55 companies, including Chamber members Pfizer, Eastman Kodak and IBM.
“We prefer the approach — particularly in this climate — where the actual people who are on the front lines, running businesses, trying to create jobs, come and advise us on policy,” senior White House adviser Valerie Jarrett told POLITICO in a not-so-subtle effort to portray the Chamber as out of touch with business reality.
Chamber officials say the White House is scapegoating the Chamber and other trade associations as a way of dividing the business community, a move that could help the administration made headway on health care reform, climate change legislation and regulatory reform.
I doubt that anyone in the White House would be foolish enough to participate in a hoax to do it, though. Their strategy appears effective enough as it is. They have already won some significant defections from major businesses, which is why the USCC has seen them literally defect in the last few weeks. That’s an entirely legitimate strategy, even if it is in service to a very bad idea. Even this White House wouldn’t make that kind of amateurish mistake.
That can’t be said for news outlets like the Washington Post, New York Times, CNBC, and especially Reuters, who originally reported on it. That kind of an about-face by the USCC should have set warning bells ringing in newsrooms. What was the likelihood of the USCC not only backing cap-and-trade but also demanding a new carbon tax on top of it? And how long would it have taken for someone to look at the USCC website to confirm the information? Even the slowest of connections would take no longer than a minute for the page to load – or to notice the difference in the URLs.
At the conference this weekend, one reporter noted that bloggers rarely pick up a phone to verify information, a criticism with more than a little truth to it. Unfortunately, that appears to apply to reporters as well.

The White House is more foolish (and nastier) than you could ever imagine. In the post-modern world, fact-checking has become an obsolete activity – since the word “fact” has lost it’s meaning. Snipe hunting, fact checking … why would a moral relativist bother with such things like snipe and fact and truth? Good, evil, left hand, right hand … hopeless confusion wrapped around the launch codes to a nuclear armagedon. Gives a person that warm fuzzy feeling … awe @$%Q3! That warm wet feeling… Now everyone knows how it feels to have a lunatic point a gun at your head. What gets me is that I am sure he feels we are too simple to see the higher nobility of his cause, a cause so noble that the ends will justify any and all means. Thi sounds suspiciously like either the arm twisting described by the Chrysler shareholder’s atty Luaria the “ends justifies the means crowd” or polital favortism like that promised to Frank Clarks Exelon/Com-Ed.
This stanard operating proceedure for the collectivist crowd, I wrote to some extent on this a while ago…
A breif excerpt there of:
Once this power is attained, the primary task is to consolidate it swiftly, and then lock in the mechanisms to maintain it.
When Obama foisted the demands of labor upon the captains of industry, backed by his bully pulpit of government and bribery of promises of State supplied advantages over their competitors, he merged their respective interests. This combined the political power of the two and consolidated it with the State. This confluence of a power trifecta between big labor, big business and big government enables Obama in his collectivist quest against individualism. As was so precisely described and ably predicted by Miss Rand in her writings, this is Barack Obama in the role of Wesley Mouch in Atlas Shrugged.
You might think that such heavy handed tactics by Obama might raise howls of protest from our press. But of protest we hear nary a peep, indeed the administration is so confident that it has effectively co-opted our “Fourth Estate”, that it feels it can threaten to use it as the club wielded by that heavy hand.
Ayn Rand illustrated how this political power and influence over the media is promulgated by a barrage of advisory bodies whose consultation is called upon to fill air-time. Associations of so and so, panels on such and such, and councils for this, that, and the other, these are our modern 527’s. Like People for the American Way, Center for American Progress, MoveOn.org and their sister affiliations, these tax-exempt entities which so inundate our political discourse today sway public opinion to their nefarious political ends. The profusion of which was also foreseen by Miss Rand. This is George Soros in the role of Ellsworth Toohy in The Fountainhead.
And more from another article here:
In the view of Barack and his leftist brethren, Capitalism has been the mechanism employed to repress the southern races. Socialism at home, while a means to reduce American ostentation, it is an ineffective vehicle for wealth transfer. Their tool of preference to remedy this disparity is a cobbling together of a Corporate-Union-Government global collectivism model to implement a constraining Eco-Fascism on the developed west and by tapping our treasury to the tune of another $845 Billion a year in the form of foreign aid. This latter bit was the audacious proposal of just a freshman Jr. Senator, and just how ambitious his future moves in this direction as President remain to be seen.
To foist such as massive global wealth rebalancing upon Americans (and hence pressure the rest of the west) Obama must first find a means to rein-in the chaotic dynamism of individual capitalism, ie; small businesses. Entrepreneurs who start up new enterprises, the dominant engine of our economic growth, are by nature an unruly lot. They are not normally disposed towards the centralized controls needed to enact such schemes. To thrust one-size-fits-all mandates upon them is akin to herding cats, because their interests are too varied to be addressed by blanket measures. No, to get a firm grasp of the economy, it requires a less fragmented model. A model where people are coalesced under massive umbrella bodies represented by figureheads who are then more easily managed, either by carrots or by sticks. It easier to juggle 3 baseballs than 10 BB’s, baseballs you can get a firm grip on, and continual monitoring of 10 items simultaneously is too unwieldy. Multi-national corporations and large trade unions fit this bill nicely.
So in order for Obama to shift our economy from where the bulk of employment is found in small and medium sized firms, to large behemoths vulnerable to unions and with only a single CEO to deal with, he needs leverage. The tools he has found to accomplish this end are found in the onerous burdens of his Cap & Trade bill and his Mandated Healthcare plan. To comply with all the new regulations from the enhanced affirmative action guidelines, energy efficiency retooling, mandatory company supplied health coverage and whatever version of card check is eventually passed, these are margin killing impositions for a small to medium sized businesses. Someone with a payroll of 10-100 people cannot afford to hire a lobbyist to plead their case, and seek relief from detrimental policies.
Unions and Corporate giants already have armies of these who secure their exemptions before the laws are even being written. For instance, 85% of the revenues meant to be generated by H.R.2454 (American Clean Energy & Security Act of 2009) have already been negated by carbon tax credits awarded to the likes of G.E. and Excelon and others, but these burdens remain in place for more modest sized companies. The bigger firms unable to gain favorable “exemptions” through insider connections can at least afford to float these added costs over the course of the year and then turn in their carbon credits at tax time. Small to medium sized concerns not so much.
This is why we see this coziness with corporate titans like Intel and Goldman Sachs et al and this administration. Giants such as these and their kind stay close to the administration and are quite literally “in the room” to curry favor and allowances that Mom & Pop operations across the nation can never hope to get. These exceptions are granted to Mega-Corporations and justified under the convenient rubric of “systemic risk” to the national economy. And the preference shown for hot shot outfits over “Joe the Plumber” doesn’t stop there. Notice how the pin-striped mandarins of Mergers & Acquisitions and Collateralized Investment Vehicles, the guys who handle the “paper” for the large corporations got this “systemic risk” label, whereas the more mundane CIT Group who underwrote 70% of all small business loans in America did not.
The shotgun marriage of Big Government/Big Labor & Big Business, with Obama holding the 12 gauge, is ripped right from the pages of Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged. Once having achieved control over your employment, your access to medical care and your energy usage, and the elimination all other available options, the public will find themselves beholden to them for their subsistence or locked out of the monopolized system.

A collective MADness has beset mankind. Being the Religio that I am, I suspect GOD has decided to kickoff the 4th quarter of the game. Only THAT makes sense when you have the drastic changes that we’ve seen in how governments of just about everywhere completely disregards the people’s needs and welfare in preference to more and more POWER over the people. The people completely disregard life as precious, the people of GOD forget that HE still IS there, and act like heathen and those that don’t know GOD consider anyone who does as substandard humans unworthy of consuming the same air they breathe. (Generalizing of course)
We have begun moving into a twilight zone per se and this collective insanity is being capped off by a new religion of people who worship the earth and loathe people and openly advocate for fewer humans on the planet by neglecting the elderly, killing the unborn and marginalizing the poor to the extent that they remain poor and under nourished which for all intents and purposes means some of them will kick off early and not be a “drain” on society.
Its GOD Damned madness I tell ya.

How come no one is talking about this treaty the “0” is going to sign in, of all places, Copenhagen???
Here are two links that every American should be required to see… Here, please notice the date they want this study done by and when is that treaty gong to be signed? Umm…
And here, well, I‘ll let Lord Monckton say it …

I doubt that anyone in the White House would be foolish enough to participate in a hoax to do it, though.
You would be surprised? From the same bunch of schmucks that have lied about everything from the jobs created/saved to no public option to oh let’s see, everything?
They would lie about not lying and then send out email asking for people to report on anything “fishy”

R U Kidding? Here?
No doubt Morrischmuck will have some comment on it tomorrow explaining to you how much of a crazy conspiracy theory this is. How only “Birthers” would be so stupid as to believe it. How you’re just one of those knee-jerk right-wingers who claims that our President is a “Marxist”, or a “Socialist” or some such other outrageous and irrational paranoia.
A Treaty to establish a Global Government? And a Communist government at that? Are you serious? Everyone knows that there’s no such thing as “Communism”. Only neanderthalic McCarthyites from a bygone era would believe in such a thing.
Oh, Morrischmuck or AllahPutz will word it differently; careful to pretend that they are the only reasoned individuals left in the world. But, it’s coming. Some condescending dismissal of what Monckton had to say as “extremist” conspiracy garbage that only imbeciles would buy into.

Ed is sticking to some higher moral ideal (a good thing) and projecting that morality on Obama (a foolish assumption). Obama’s brief political history is rife with lies, obfuscations, and use of surrogates to destroy his opposition. While I would like to see proof of his administration’s fingerprints on this, the fact is it’s right up Obama’s street.

1) Lindzen doesn’t get any money from Exxon. A group that he was once part of got about 1% of it’s funding, for one year from Exxon.
2) I notice that you don’t even attempt to refute anything Lindzen has found, you just attempt to distract with a lie.

1) It’s not a sure deal that any treaty will be produced by the Copenhagen group.
2) A presidential signature means nothing. A treaty doesn’t become enforceable until it’s ratified by congress, and I doubt even this congress could get the 60 votes necessary to break a filibuster.
