Ziegler: Why I got the boot from WCPAC

posted at 9:05 pm on October 18, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Earlier today, I wrote about John Ziegler’s confrontation with the ACU’s David Keene and his eventual expulsion from Western CPAC.  This evening, John writes an exclusive column for Mediaite, along with exclusive video, explaining the incident and the background that led to it:

I have a really hard time with people who claim to be crusaders for the conservative cause but who are really only in it for either personal and/or economic aggrandizement. In my media career I have found that vast majorities of the elite among conservative politicians and media stars fit into this pathetic category. One of the most aggravating aspects of the heat I have taken over the past year for my efforts to shine light on the injustice of the media coverage of the 2008 election is that I often get accused of being one of those who only craves personal attention and has less than pure motives (which considering I was a long time radio talk show host, a career infested with such scoundrels, I can actually begrudgingly understand).

To me, now more than ever, the conservative movement must purge itself of those in its “leadership” who are not worthy of the cause they claim to champion. Over the past year I have begun to suspect that David Keene, the head of the American Conservative Union and the Chairman of CPAC (the largest annual gathering of conservatives) may fit into this category. …

So, with this as the backdrop, I went to Western CPAC in Newport Beach this past weekend as a scheduled speaker and an exhibitor. I also went with the full intention of getting David Keene to address at least some of these issues.

It became clear to me that the best way to do this was, rather than going way off the topic of my speaking panel (I was there to talk about my arrest at USC’s Katie Couric journalism award ceremony) and making an unnecessary scene that probably wouldn’t even make sense, was to get an interview with David Keene. Keene agreed to do a sit-down interview and the guys from Orange County Films (who had videotaped the Couric episode) volunteered to shoot whatever happened that day.

This is the first of three videos at Mediaite:

Rather than write too much about this myself, I’d encourage everyone to read John’s article and watch the videos. From my perspective, the only thing John did that crossed any kind of line was when he followed Keene into the speaking hall — where Keene was obviously trying to run away — and he had to be asked to stop repeatedly to keep from disrupting one of the panels. Instead of just dropping it, the event organizers escalated the problem by first kicking John off of his panel and then making the entire issue public when John had already agreed to leave — an agreement in which I was involved, for full disclosure, and which fell apart while I got sick in the hotel (I had some problems with my diabetes medication this weekend). The final act of this little drama was, from my perspective, completely avoidable by Western CPAC’s brain trust.

I agree. Conservatism is about ideas, not personality. Those who talk the talk but don’t walk the walk should be called out, but we can’t slip into the hero worship that liberals have fallen into. In that way, you rise and fall with the fortunes of your hero.

By rehashing the Palin saga, we sound like Seahawk fans rehashing the bad calls in Superbowl XL. It is over. What they did to Palin was wrong, but she was also in the game. She may be the best candidate at some point, but she hasn’t shown that yet. The best candidate is not only one who says the right thing, but also can defend it and lead.

When Laura Bush says that Obama is doing a good job (Google it) you know the party has no clue and is OWNED by it’s own Special Interests.

I like what Rubio says but………BUT……..I don’t want ANY Republican that has a connection to any of the Bush Family EVER….EVER….EVER near political power again.

I sent money initially to Rubio but once I found out he was endorsed by the Bush family that was it. I’ll take a wait and see approach on Marco……..I hope I’m wrong and he’s not a BUSHIE.

The GOP is a lost cause………and CPAC and other “Conservative” groups? I don’t know that they can be trusted either.

I sympathize with John but why make a scene?

RobCon on October 18, 2009 at 10:58 PM

Because everyone at the convention will now dig into this to see what the “big deal” was and they’ll find exactly what it was.

It’s a stunt – but it makes people look into the issue to discover on their own what’s going on here.

Pretty clear here that ACU is being run by a RINO who talks like a Patriot.

That “stunt” gave us all a living room view of David Keene and how he is – how much of a coward he is. See … we never see this. All we see is David Keene the op ed writer. David Keene on the podium or in a straight interview.

John just did us all a favor by allowing us to look at the real David Keene – and how he deals with controversy.

Don’t know about any one else – but I personally am turned off by David Keene.

LOL! The GOP is just getting going brah. The grassroots are taking the castle next year – and we’re kicking the Ayatollah’s out of it!

If you’re not backing Rubio then you’re backing Crist. Crist supported the Obama Porkulous so by cracky I don’t understand how you can call the GOP a lost cause if you’re backing the guy who backed that mess!

I think 99% of what was thrown at Palin went much too far, but that’s unfortunately part of what American politics has become. If she can’t meet it head-on, it won’t matter how good she is. She’ll be perceived by her opposition as a whiner — like Osama Obama, only as a Republican that’s an unacceptable trait — and will never hear the end of it.

If only more people questioned Specter the Sphincter before RINO’s have damaged our party, we would not have a socialist president right now.

Now to rid us of the Snowe job Olympia.

Palin WASN’T ready for the media firestorm.

I think she knew the media would side against her, but thought she’d be treated with a medium of respect. She has not, and will not make that mistake again, which is why she isn’t interviewing with any of them right now. She is simply by passing them with the internet.

Why is it a fixation? Just because he wants to correct the record?

There are those of us who are thankful that Palin helped John McCain avoid an embarrassing loss at the polls last year. He lost but it would have been much worse without her – even Steve Schmidt admits that now.

We’re not willing to leave her on the battlefield after getting the Dan Quayle treatment.

Call a fixation – I call it a righteous fight.

Especially since it won’t end with Sarah Palin. The next GOP nominee will get the same treatment until we fix this shi’ite.

Gotta agree with Ed on this one. Ziegler did cross the line when he continued to badger Keene after he’d already taken off into the conference room. He didn’t have to do that – the point had already been made that Keene wasn’t going to answer the question. David Keene is hiding something.

That security guy has got to be the most weaselly, whiny little puke I’ve ever seen.

Red Cloud on October 18, 2009 at 11:20 PM

Good for Ziegler. I’m proud of him for being a check on the powers that be even if those powers are on a side I’m expected to join in lockstep. Is it any wonder why those in the grassroots continuously get frustrated if not downright antagonistic by the established machines.

Really quite enlightening even though I understand Ziegler may push a button or two to make his point. I won’t look at CPAC/ACU quite the same under Keene et al.

Thank you too, Ed, for introducing this piece. The same culture that poisons the Left can surely poison the Right. Sunlight, disinfectant. Do the math.

AnonymousDrivel on October 18, 2009 at 11:23 PM

Ziegler is so dang comfortable with himself in the heat of battle, it’s a thing of beauty. Look how he made all these fat get-along repubicans (as Levin calls them) panic and sweat. Go Ziegler!

Is Keene kidding with the “I’m a friend of Arlen” garbage? That’s as revealing as Anita Dunn saying “Chairman Mao is the philosopher I turn to most.” I can’t wait for the next grubber mail I get from ACU so I can send the postage paid envelope back with suggestions on stuffing a Benedict Arlen up one’s pooper. Just today Keene’s buddy Sen. Sphincter was telling Chris Wallace that America is overwhelmingly in favor of the public option. Yeah, that and George Washington ran a kibbutz.

As for the Fedex sellout letter, that’s horrible if true. Sounds like a case for O’Keefe and Giles.

It certainly appears they tried to manhandle someone who was an INVITED GUEST of these proceedings. Not looking good for ACU. Maybe we should all call Mr. Keene this week to get answers to these questions.

This movement will definitely fracture some more before any lasting coalitions can be built. It’s the kind of thing the Fauxbama thugs are loving, sorry to say.

THe next time was her farewell speech when she told the fringe media to stop making things up. If anybody is whining it is the fringe media.

This Ziegler guy is doing great work here that few true conservatives are willing to do. Mr. Zieglar needs to control his emotions and anger. I don’t blame him for getting angry, mind you. But it doesn’t help. A few like Zieglar and Malkin (w/her Upside Down Elephant columns) are going after some of the scoundrels in the Republican Party “and” the very sick, anemic and dysfunctional Conservative Movement. But they’re too few. Limbaugh falls far short. Even though he won’t admit it he continues to carry BIG water for George W. Bush and K. Rove who did more damage to the GOP than did Richard Nixon. They’ve all but destroyed it and the Conservative Movement. IMHO Rush’s CPAC09 speech was way overrated ( link ) Rush is good at digging dirt on the democrats, and thats cool. But he’s doing little to whip the GOP into shape in time for 11/2/20. Same goes for Hannity. They’re our 2 big guns and both are shooting blanks half the time, now. So that leaves guys like this Ziegler fellow to get out there and do the best he can. I, personally, want to thank Mr.Ziegler for what he’s doing and encourage him to continue. Darvin Dowdy

The point Zeigler keeps hammering — and thank God someone has the tenacity to do it — is that the character assassination brand of politics used against Sarah Palin is dishonest and wrong. Not only that it will bring horrific consequences to our country because people of character will be destroyed while people of maleable character — if they have any at all — will rule us into oblivion. For the head of the American CONSERVATIVE Union to lend his support to the witch hunt of Palin — who is currently one of the most effective conservative voices in America — is unconscionable. And if he can’t be fired then this sort of public outing is the next best thing. Bravo!

Grow Fins on October 18, 2009 at 11:55 PM

You’re as captivated as anyone, bud.

Well, what with the angry rhetoric bubbling on the right and the unprecedented number of death threats against him that have resulted, let’s all hope he survives, period.

Grow Fins on October 18, 2009 at 11:42 PM

I wish no harm at all to Renegade, Renaissance, Radiance and Rosebud. LOL

ddrintn on October 19, 2009 at 12:00 AM

Heh, kind of seems like you have a fixation with me. I don’t swing that way, dude.

Proud Rino on October 18, 2009 at 11:57 PM

I posted in this thread first. Dude. But nah, I do find your impotent pretentiousness to be mildly interesting. In a law-school hero washout sort of way.

ddrintn on October 19, 2009 at 12:01 AM

By the way, this whole “you’re not allowed to be a conservative because you’re don’t agree with me on Sarah Palin and the genius god that she is” is stupid. It’s the same as a liberal saying you’re not really black if you don’t attach yourself to every fringe leftist cause.

We get it John, you’d like Palin’s shoes…Keene wouldn’t, so he has to be purrggggeeed.

Ugh.

TheBlueSite on October 19, 2009 at 12:02 AM

You’re as captivated as anyone, bud.

I know. I just said I was.

But probably for different reasons than you. Kinda like watching a snake eat mice.

Grow Fins on October 19, 2009 at 12:02 AM

We need to get real and actually back someone who can win. A losing candidate who you believe in is great, but facebook posts will never change policy.

TheBlueSite on October 18, 2009 at 11:59 PM

You need to keep up. They already have.

I can read fine, thanks, you sleazebag. “Cop a feel.” What is it with you righty males. Everything’s analogous to hitting on women.

Being a jerk that it…..

Kini on October 19, 2009 at 12:11 AM

Yes, now as we enter election season, this is the perfect time for this.
Uh, Mr. Ziegler, might I suggest a film interview with Mike Huckabee instead?

Amendment X on October 18, 2009 at 9:40 PM

Correct me if I’m wrong, but 2009 is an off-year with no Federal election, followed by a Congress only election.

If now isn’t the time, then during an election year must be worse; and the year before the Presidential election must be worse… Well that’s the other 3 years of the 4 year cycle isn’t it?

Do you have a time that is acceptable? Do we have a window of more than 3-4 months every 4 years in which to have this type of discussion?

Maybe we can set that date for Feb 30th of every year? Would that work? Or the 10th of Never? Is that better?

If you disagree with the discussion, feel free. But your reasoning that the timing is problematic is spurious.

13 months before a non-Presidential election isn’t “too close”; or if it is, can you clarify the few weeks every 4 years in which we are allowed some small manner of dissent from the accepted party line?

Or was that your point? That no dissent, even with questions of leadership should ever be entertained at any time?

gekkobear on October 19, 2009 at 12:15 AM

I’ve heard liberal girls are easy.

HornetSting on October 19, 2009 at 12:07 AM

It’s true. Nearly every truly liberal young woman I’ve seen have had personal habits that should have required them to have “raging overhormoned d**kpocket*.

Modern definition of ‘liberation’ = emulate a common strumpet.

The valueless males (of all political bents) are laughing behind their backs of how they played the biggest joke on women in centuries – the ‘sexual revolution’.

I’ve heard not a few old-line feminists complain very loudly about their younger sisters. They’re throwing away the very thing they fought to attain – that women should be defined by what they can achieve instead of by the location of their sex organs. Sadly, their admonitions go completely unheeded in all but a handful of cases. And it’s too bad, really, not just for the damage it’s causing to our culture but because some of the original feminists complaints were quite valid.

Dark-Star on October 19, 2009 at 12:16 AM

Thank you, Dark-Star. Earth girls, well liberal ones, and grow fins, who acts like a girl, are easy…..

Rush has called GWB out on so many things but states that he is a gentleman. Rush also says that if you listen you will hear who the Left and the Washington Republicans fear the most as a candidate. Who is the one that has been vilified by both? Lets see was it Huckabee, not hardly. Is it Romney, heavens no, they even give you polls that show everyone in the universe is ahead of Palin. This Keane pos is symptomatic of what the Washington Elites do, and will do to keep total control of the party. We need some draino to flush the rinos.

jainphx on October 19, 2009 at 12:27 AM

Ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SOooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much drama,

canopfor on October 19, 2009 at 12:29 AM

I’m just saying ugly politics is nothing new. It is not unique to Sarah Palin. Do I think it is right how some have treated Mrs. Palin? No. Is ugly and vile politics unique to her? Nope. And I’m not going to pretend like it is.

terryannonline on October 18, 2009 at 10:15 PM

If we lied about you and your family the way Palin and her family were lied about, I wonder how long you could go without feeling the need to set the record straight, and when you finally attempt to defend yourself, I wonder how kindly you would take it if we accused you of being a whiner for doing so.

Why not run for office yourself and expose yourself to the shots she’s taken, then come talk to us. Till then, you might show some compassion or at the very least have the decency to avoid self-righteous criticism.

ramrocks on October 19, 2009 at 12:33 AM

gekkobear on October 19, 2009 at 12:15 AM

Glad I’m not the only one who hear the old broken record there.

A movie!! How terrible. Someone made a movie about the President being assassinated? How scary.
Grow Fins on October 18, 2009 at 11:51 PM

Nice try troll. Report back to your masters that your attempt to stimulate a pro-assasination quote has failed.

Chris_Balsz on October 19, 2009 at 12:35 AM

Zeigler crossed the line too far, and he overdoes it trying to defend Palin but he comes off too aggressive for that situation.

However, Keane is a moderate at best and needs to not only resign his post at ACU, but leave the GOP.

Sarah is a big girl John, and like O’Reilly you need to stop overdefending her. It will not help her.

At some point her organization will have the equivalent of a press secretary or another advisor.

And yes, CPAC without Sarah will be dead this coming Feb. No need to show there without the Cuda.

Sapwolf on October 19, 2009 at 12:41 AM

The left and the elites are smart, they come on conservative threads and speak their particular brand of squish. Their idea of the ideal candidate (McCain) got his a$$ handed to him by a communist cabal headed by Obama. Sarah Palin kept it close, she drew crowds that McCain only wished he could draw. Can’t have that, no sir she has to be destroyed, with the help of some on our side.

I wish we could all see through the slime that is Washington. It needs cleansing. Some of these jerks have been in office for 50 years, tell me that thats healthy.

jainphx on October 19, 2009 at 12:42 AM

Why is it a fixation? Just because he wants to correct the record?

There are those of us who are thankful that Palin helped John McCain avoid an embarrassing loss at the polls last year. He lost but it would have been much worse without her – even Steve Schmidt admits that now.

We’re not willing to leave her on the battlefield after getting the Dan Quayle treatment.

Call a fixation – I call it a righteous fight.

Especially since it won’t end with Sarah Palin. The next GOP nominee will get the same treatment until we fix this shi’ite.

HondaV65 on October 18, 2009 at 11:16 PM

I got a sneaky feeling he wants to do more than correct the record. It’s just a feeling, but Ziegler creeps me out a bit. As far as Palin being smeared by the MSM, then yeah I agree, but I don’t know if it can be fixed. Look at all the GOP guys here who think she’s a ditz, and we can’t convince them that it was propaganda. If we could change anybody’s mind then it should be them. The left is going to use the media and pop culture to smear any good conservative as stupid and evil, and that is truly our biggest obstacle in the next nomination process. The only glimmer of hope is the fact that the media is losing clout on a daily basic, while fox is growing. Maybe by next election it will be a different story than it was in 2008.

DFCtomm on October 19, 2009 at 2:15 AM

The most polite thing I can say about Keene is what I’ve said on several other threads here throughout the last year or so, and it bears repeating:

David Keene has outlived his usefulness in the Republican party. As long as I have anything to say about it (and my monetary donations definitely mean I do), the GOP will make a radical (pun intended) departure from the path it has been going down for the last 21 years. The ACU is going to be left in the dust, as Keene seems to want the 1994 crowd back.

gryphon202 on October 19, 2009 at 2:31 AM

I’m sorry, but Ziegler looks like a fool in these interviews. I’d want to punch him in the face too.

TheBlueSite on October 18, 2009 at 11:59 PM

Amen. Ziegler comes off horribly in the videos. He has the Michael Moore belligerent-teenager vibe down pat. What does he accomplish by disrupting a conservative event?

As Zeigler himself said:

I have a really hard time with people who claim to be crusaders for the conservative cause but who are really only in it for either personal and/or economic aggrandizement.

Hmm…

BocaJuniors on October 19, 2009 at 3:01 AM

The GOP is a lost cause………and CPAC and other “Conservative” groups? I don’t know that they can be trusted either.

PappyD61 on October 18, 2009 at 11:06 PM

They certainly have done a good job at losing trust and a better job at keep it from coming back
