Report: U.S. diplomats meeting with Taliban’s “moderate” Afghan allies

posted at 8:15 pm on October 18, 2009 by Allahpundit

They are, after all, our partners in peace.

Mullah Mutawakkil, once a confidant of the one-eyed Taliban leader, Mullah Mohammed Omar, was held at a US base in Kandahar in 2002 after he gave himself up to American troops.

Now he is being politely wooed by a stream of senior US officials who make discreet visits to his villa, which is guarded by armed police, to hear his thoughts on what the Taliban mood is like and whether any of its leaders are ready for talks…

Taliban leaders are looking for guarantees of their personal safety from the US, and a removal of the “bounties” placed on the head of their top commanders. They also want a programme for the release of prisoners held at the notorious Bagram US air base in Afghanistan, and at Guantanamo Bay.

In return, he says, the Taliban would promise not to allow Afghanistan to be used to plan attacks on America – the original reason for American invervention, and the overriding aim of US policy in the region…

As one of the few senior Taliban figures to be reconciled to the new Afghan way of government, he is in touch by telephone with old comrades who are still fighting. His contacts with officials from the US Embassy in Kabul and from the office of US special envoy Richard Holbrooke have increased in recent weeks.

Another Taliban crony who’s now an Afghan senator claims that only a minority of the group are true jihadist nutballs and that most are simply fighting to liberate Afghanistan from occupation. That was true of the Sunni insurgency in Iraq — if it wasn’t, the Anbar awakening would have been impossible — but is it really true of the Taliban? You already know the answer if you read Roggio’s analysis a few weeks ago when the White House first started whispering that the Taliban’s no longer an implacable enemy, but here’s a bit more from NYT reporter David Rohde, who spent seven months as a Taliban hostage. Quote:

Over those months, I came to a simple realization. After seven years of reporting in the region, I did not fully understand how extreme many of the Taliban had become. Before the kidnapping, I viewed the organization as a form of “Al Qaeda lite,” a religiously motivated movement primarily focused on controlling Afghanistan.

Living side by side with the Haqqanis’ followers, I learned that the goal of the hard-line Taliban was far more ambitious. Contact with foreign militants in the tribal areas appeared to have deeply affected many young Taliban fighters. They wanted to create a fundamentalist Islamic emirate with Al Qaeda that spanned the Muslim world.

If Mutawakkil’s right that the Taliban’s willing to dump AQ, there’s a very easy way they can prove it. Exit question: The Afghan senator claims that a majority of the Quetta shura, the Taliban’s leadership council, is ready for talks — but not Mullah Omar, which presumably makes negotiations impossible. In which case, why are we even debating this?

Well in all honesty the Moderate Taliban is less radical than the Obama white house.

Obama wants to give us “Peace in our time” and already has the nobel to prove it.

Why doesn’t Obama just give up to the world then he wouldn’t have to run around the globe doing individual pandering and cowering? This poor sick Republic is declining at warp speed.

Our president has not done one thing to make me feel like he will negotiate from a position of strength. I believe he will give away the farm for nothing in return.

Might as well rename Kabul to Osama Bin Laden City now, cause that’s where Barry is going with this.

Also, Obami is willing to talk to Iran even though it was obvious that the election was fraudulent, but the US is now sees the moral high ground with Afghanistan?

Speechless.

Will they also be meeting with “The Tooth Fairy”, “Big Foot” and the “Yeti”, because they quite frankly have a better chance of actually existing?

We are fast approaching a stage where the question is no longer “how long will it take to undo the damage Osama Obama has inflicted on our nation?”

It is now: “can the United States recover from even one year of the Traitor-in-Chief’s regime?”

JeffinOrlando on October 18, 2009 at 8:36 PM

“Moderate” Taliban is like saying a “non-violent hungry tiger”.

Eventually, Obama’s gonna have to bite the bullet and make the FIRST hard decision he’s ever made in his political life.
It will be interesting to see what he does. I wouldn’t be surprised if he pulls American troops out over a short period of time. He wants to do “war on the cheap”, like any war fought that way is winnable. Of course, he has no experience in military or diplomatic matters (or much of anything else), so dithering is to be expected. Maybe Rahm will make the decision for him. Or that Dunn idiot. Or Keith Olbermann.

Sorry, folks who died on 9/11–the people who aided and abetted your murderers just outlasted our determination and will to fight. We got tired, you know, nothing personal. No one seems to mind not remembering your deaths, anyway–it’s a National Day of service now, or something like that. Oh well–next time die as part of a more politically useful cause, and maybe we’ll stick it out a little longer…

Are we this stupid? Has our leadership come to this? The Taliban will promise not to allow???? Give me a frikken break!

Rovin on October 18, 2009 at 8:39 PM

The new American thinking is that what they deem the “nationalist” Afghan Taliban may be divided from its more extreme elements – and also from al-Qaeda, whose cohorts of foreign fighters are interested almost exclusively in jihad against the West.

Just like the Viet Cong and North Vietnam were completely independent actors. Heck, they had different PO boxes and everything.

WhoU4 on October 18, 2009 at 8:53 PM

IMHO, it’s pretty clear by now that nothing short of another attack on a scale equaling or exceeding Pearl Harbor will bring the USA and it’s citizens to grips with reality.

You cannot negotiate with an enemy such as we currently face.

You cannot beat same by merely occupying dirt, unless you plan to have a soldier every dozen feet, everywhere, at all times.

You cannot wage a successful military campaign without having the majority of your civilian population, government and press – at the very least – NOT attempting to sabotage your efforts.

You cannot win ‘hearts and minds’ until competition for same has been exterminated, so driven into hiding as to be ineffective, or until nearly nobody will join/assist out of sheer terror of the fate of being discovered for doing same.

My captors harbored many delusions about Westerners. But I also saw how some of the consequences of Washington’s antiterrorism policies had galvanized the Taliban. Commanders fixated on the deaths of Afghan, Iraqi and Palestinian civilians in military airstrikes, as well as the American detention of Muslim prisoners who had been held for years without being charged. America, Europe and Israel preached democracy, human rights and impartial justice to the Muslim world, they said, but failed to follow those principles themselves.

torture works.

1st: the thought of fancy pants Richard Holbrooke or any of his over-educated diplomats negotiating with these cannibals is hilarious. i feel sorry for the Taliban having to sit thru these sessions!

Naturally, all should strive for a certain standard of decorum. Having said that, the actions of “Mr.” Trout have already discredited what ever he ever hopes to accomplish, and he, in his previous attempts at entrapment, cannot now claim some exalted high ground. For those that like LGF, fine, but having done good service in exposing Dan Rather does not one a giant of the age make, nor a king maker. I believe I am aware of the game that is afoot, and am not worried by it, for the quest to spear the great white whale will only, as for poor Ahab, lead to an end not good.

Those who believe their ideas can go head-to-head have no need to cart out what some halfwit says on a discussion board. Those who do not so believe do.

In return, he says, the Taliban would promise not to allow Afghanistan to be used to plan attacks on America – the original reason for American invervention intervention, and the overriding aim of US policy in the region…

Not for quite a while.

Whatever the merits, or lack of same, to this it seems rather similar to Bush in Iraq with the alliances with Sunni tribal leaders, many who had killed American troops.

Ah, I see that you had mentioned that –

That was true of the Sunni insurgency in Iraq — if it wasn’t, the Anbar awakening would have been impossible — but is it really true of the Taliban?

As with the Sunnis in Iraq it will be true as long as it suits them (elements of the Taliban) for it to be true and not any longer.

Charles Johnson is an emotional six-year-old with extraordinary powers to control the blog where he rules by simply wishing away people and things that anger or confound him. Charles has the mind, imagination and maturity of a typical lunatic. The people at LGF have to look like lizards all the time, think lizard thoughts all the time, and say lizard things all the time, because that’s what Charles commands and, if they disobey, he can wish them into a “cornfield” from whence they are never to be seen or heard from again. What few adults remain try nervously to think like lizards and tell Charles that he’s a good boy, hoping that Charles’s terrible power won’t be turned upon themselves.

Charles Johnson appears to combine the worst traits of Joe McCarthy, Anthony Fremont (Twilight Zone episode: “It’s a Good Life”) and a consummate dhimmi. And that is just from what I know about him so far.

This is the same contorted act that we see every time we elect this bunch of clowns to any serious office. The main idea that drives everything they do is “Freedom doesn’t work”. Every domestic policy initiative either ignores it or is intended to destroy it, and every foreign policy decision debases its value.
Right now the Obama administration, like the Clinton administration before it, is conjuring up “Moderates” to treat with so they can wiggle their way out of having to defend anyone’s human rights but their own. Because at bottom, they simply don’t believe in them for anyone else. Just themselves!
So when someone like Richard Holbrook tells them exactly what they want so desperately to hear, they just suck it up and get their pens out for another TV signing event. Peace in our time, indeed!

Then he excused himself so he could break out in riotous laughter without being heard.

Daggett on October 19, 2009 at 12:31 AM

Right, what would Obama do if the Taliban break that promise?

I’ve often said Obama is a symptom of the greater disease. Why is it nobody in Washington is talking about a 5-year army of a million men? We did that in 1917 with a third of our population. Afghanistan has less than 8 million people between 15-64, if you figure a majority are males thats still less than 4.5 million men capable of bearing arms, and not all would fight us by a long shot. We can outnumber the bastards if we’re serious, which we are not–and that’s not because Obama is President; Obama is President because America isn’t serious about our defense. Why?

Beyond all the blather and rahrah, THIS is what happens when somebody bombs New York City: we commit 300,000 troops overseas for 8 years and then lose.

They wanted to create a fundamentalist Islamic emirate with Al Qaeda that spanned the Muslim world.

Where the he!! have you been genius.
The jihadist have been on a quest for the new Modern Caliphate for decades.

It is in the writings,Fatwa’s,and speeches.

Not a big confidence builder that this guy had to be held hostage by the Taliban to know this.

In return, he says, the Taliban would promise not to allow Afghanistan to be used to plan attacks on America

Wow!!!!!
What an absolute breakthrough.
They said they “promised”.
Is that…you know…a pinky promise or just the regular kind.
dam#, we could have avoided all this war stuff if we just could have gotten the jihadist to “promise” that they would not carry on their quest for the New Caliphate.

For crying out loud Obama.
Just announce that all the terrorism is America’s fault and surrender already,,,it is what you and the democrats want to do anyway.

Well it was a hudna that the taliban was looking for in 2007
but Bush didn’t give it to them
So it is Bush’s fault

http://prairiepundit.blogspot.com/2007/09/taliban-looking-for-hudna-truce.html

Hudna is not a cease-fire or a truce
Its a war tactic to regroup, rearm and recapture, when fighting a non-muslim enemy

The answer lies in another Arabic word: hudna. A hudna isn’t a peace treaty. It’s a temporary truce called by a Muslim warrior who’s losing in battle. It’s pretty easy to understand how hudnas work by watching Israel fight Hamas and Hezbollah. Those two terrorist groups lob rockets and send suicide bombers into Israel for months; then, every once in a while, Israel deploys its military and flattens Hamas and Hezbollah, who then call for a hudna. The UN intervenes, saving Hamas and Hezbollah to fight another day. That’s a hudna: a tactical truce for a strategic advantage.

Hell, my little detachment meets with moderate, hard core and even mildly interested Taliban. I’d say the outcome of the meetings is rather different from our diplomats though.

Good times. Good times.

First take out the Quetta Shura and Mullah Omar. Screw the ISI and Pakistan. Negotiate with the successors. If they balk, take them out in Pakistan too. Continue cycle until someone’s ready to talk…

Really?

Mucking Foron.

hawkdriver on October 19, 2009 at 5:28 AM

Over those months, I came to a simple realization. After seven years of reporting in the region, I did not fully understand how extreme many of the Taliban had become were. Before the kidnapping, I viewed the organization as a form of “Al Qaeda lite,” a religiously motivated movement primarily focused on controlling Afghanistan.

Geez, you’d think a journalist would know how to conjugate a verb. If he can’t even do that, it’s no wonder we can’t expect him to have researched the organization and found out that “controlling Afghanistan” was the very reason Pakistan’s ISI created the Taliban in the first place.

Didn’t Obama announce awhile back a special “Council on Women & Girls”? While we didn’t go into Afghanistan to rescue the women and girls, as a side effect we HAVE rescued them. What do these fools think will happen to Afghan females if we side with the Taliban? Not only will it go back to no education, medical care or rights for them, I find it impossible to believe the Taliban won’t punish those women who’ve “overstepped their places”. As a President, Obama should be ashamed of hanging our troops out to dry. And as a husband and father, he should be ashamed to throw thousands of women to the wolves.

KowalaPolaTix on October 19, 2009 at 7:55 AM

Moderate Taliban. Seriously?

Bwahahahaha!!! Oh wait… that’s not really funny, is it?

For those that like LGF, fine, but having done good service in exposing Dan Rather does not one a giant of the age make, nor a king maker.

Keep in mind, all Chuckles did was piggyback off of FR poster Buckhead and create an animated gif with the memo.
