Defending the invincible

posted at 2:15 pm on October 18, 2009 by Doctor Zero

Almost every column written in defense of Rush Limbaugh over the last few days, following the vicious campaign to slander him as a racist, has included a statement along the lines of “Rush is rich, powerful, intelligent, and articulate, so he can take care of himself, and he’ll be just fine.” I don’t mean to disparage the authors of these sentiments, but I must disagree. I know the most popular conservative broadcaster in America doesn’t need some anonymous guest-author on a blog to defend him, but I’m going to do it anyway, without the slightest reservation due to his wealth and power.

Much strife and misery has been visited on this country by the idea that the rights and prerogatives of the rich and successful are diminished by their fortunes… that we should feel no remorse about seizing their property, or insulting their honor, because they’ll still be comfortably rich at the end of the day. We have become much too relaxed about laughing off vile slander, because the target can nurse his wounded soul from the plush accommodations of a West Palm Beach mansion. Honor is as valuable to the millionaire as to the pauper.

I’ll probably never be part of a consortium that purchases a football team, but I understand what it means to watch a dream bleed to death. My hopes and ambitions may be smaller than Rush Limbaugh’s, but they have exactly the same value to me. Whether those dreams are carved from pixels, paper, or platinum, they are equally priceless. It requires only a drop of the moral imagination utterly lacking in the people who slandered Limbaugh to guess what it feels like, when a man whose life revolves around words and ideas sees his dreams boiled away by words he didn’t speak, and ideas he has never held.

The events of the past week were about more than simply thwarting Limbaugh’s desire to buy into a football team. There was the naked greed of parasites like Al Sharpton, desperate to maintain his relevance in a world that has wisely stripped him of the power to destroy a man’s life with a phony rape allegation, or launch murderous riots. There was the blind personal hatred of Limbaugh, by people who long ago tired of watching him rewrite their plans for the part of America that refuses to submit to them. And, of course, this was the latest offensive in a bitter war against the ideas that Limbaugh has long served, as their most cheerful and effective defender. Limbaugh’s enemies in that war are angry because they’re frightened. They’re frightened because all of their estimates and projections said they should have been able to claim victory by now.

Backed up against the wall, and forced to admit the most damaging quotes used against Limbaugh were forgeries, his accusers are left stammering that he’s simply too “divisive” to be involved with ownership of an NFL team. What a bleak example of the totalitarian mindset! If you disagree with the approved ideas distributed by the collective, you’re “divisive” and unfit for membership in polite society. I suppose Limbaugh is saturated with divisiveness particles, whose half-life will extend for decades, but the warning to others is clear: rid yourselves of those “divisive” ideas and get with the program.

Perhaps the President could direct one of his many czars to prepare a list of certified “divisive” positions, and which aspects of society are closed to offenders. It would save people like David Checketts, the investor seeking to purchase the Rams, the time he wasted inviting Limbaugh to join his consortium. Imagine how much more convenient it would have been for Checketts, if he could have pulled up a handy whitehouse.gov web page and learned Rush was too divisive to be minority owner of a football team! The Homeland Security spectrum of terrorist alert levels could be used to measure divisiveness ratings. I’d be willing to give them an email address, so the system could send me a warning message when I approach Level Orange. What do you suppose the divisiveness rating for someone like Jeremiah Wright would be? He built a tidy personal fortune from his Ministry of Hate – would he be allowed to buy a stake in an NFL team?

Only the most gullible dupes, and people who rely on CNN for “news”, seriously think Rush Limbaugh is a racist. The dishonesty and cynicism behind dimwitted assertions that he wanted to buy an NFL team to role-play the life of a plantation owner is breathtaking. His accusers don’t really think he harbors some elusive racist demon, which he suppresses just long enough to become friends with Walter Williams, Clarence Thomas, Thomas Sowell, and Tony Dungy. The people who read this crap should be at least as angry over the insult to their intelligence as Limbaugh is about the insult to his honor. This kind of weapons-grade stupidity is one of the things America can no longer afford.

Limbaugh’s accusers want him burned at the stake for the crime of effective conservatism, not the racism they were so eager to lie about last week. The American public should think long and hard about which side of this ideological struggle should be on trial. Rush Limbaugh’s ideas did not produce a titanic deficit, double-digit unemployment, and global adversaries who can barely stop laughing at our President long enough to pretend they respect him. His ideas did not put disciples of Saul Alinsky, Chairman Mao, and Alex Jones in positions of power. His words are not deployed to conceal hundreds of billions in stolen “stimulus” money, thousand-page Mad Lib bills riddled with blank paragraphs, and massive offenses against individual liberty. His EIB Network endorses $1500 Sleep Number beds, not “saved or created” jobs costing half a million bucks apiece. Unlike the “Hope and Change” Administration, he doesn’t spend his three hours on the radio each weekday listing all the things you will no longer be allowed to do. He is the champion of ideas so powerful that his enemies fear the merest taste of them.

Rush Limbaugh has raised his voice in defense of freedom countless times over the years. I’m happy to exercise my freedom to raise my voice in defense of him. I invite you to do the same. It doesn’t matter if he doesn’t “need” it. He deserves it. All of us do. There is little we can do to reverse the injustice of the St. Louis Rams affair, but we can make it up to Rush by giving him the chance to deliver a hell of a show on the day after Election Day, next year. If CNN is foolish enough to continue employing cretins like Rick Sanchez by then, all of them should be turning in a very enjoyable performance on that day, as well.

Maybe the boss should consider hiring Dr. Zero.

For those who have the patience to read the whole thing, yeah.

I don’t understand why some people on this site have a problem with reading Doc’s posts because they are a bit longer. They are long because he has a lot of incite and wants to get his points across. If it is too long for you, then don’t read it, but quit whining to the rest of us about it.
Perhaps those that complain constantly need to try reading his posts, and then they might actually learn something!

Great post Doc, as usual!

I think you took my position wrong, I was basically agreeing with you, especially about what was written by afrolib as my earlier posts suggested my thoughts about him . I should have been more clear in saying that I guess. My intent was that I can appreciate Liam`s stance on the retraction as it is his personal position to take. By mods I meant moderators and I thought that part was clear enough, if any of our names had been attached to that statement how would we have been treated? Like I said, I do not believe we would fare so well as to just issues a retraction. I hope I cleared some of that up, there was no intent at picking a fight.

bluemarlin on October 18, 2009 at 5:16 PM

Regardless, Limbaugh would never have become an owner even without the bogus quotes. He’s said plenty of ridiculous, objectionable things all on his own, and the momentum to deny him an ownership stake was already rolling far before those quotes came out.

crr6 on October 18, 2009 at 4:18 PM

This is a huge problem and should be a pressing concern for even you. Who are we to choose as arbiters of ‘ridiculous and objectionable things?’ What happens when the person, group, or panel of arbiter(s) changes hands? And then, what is the appropriate punishment for such thought crimes?

If I may urge you, step back and forget about the substance of what you may disagree with here and ponder the principle of what it seems you are advocating. It truly is dangerous.

For those looking to capitalize on my misstatement, let me remind you that this is the first time i was off in my comments on this board.

A lot of conservatives here on this blog do make subtle racist statements that i have neglected to call out. ie calling Obama bro, Osama, muslim etc. Some of you may not find those statements racist but as a black man, I do.

A lot of prominent blacks do find Juan despising and some have called him worse than i just did. That said, that doesn’t justify me doing the same.

If i am banned, fine. At least i got the apology out to those who found that statement offensive.

No fight here. I feel like I’m getting the flu, so I’m too weak to fight…besides, I didn’t want to fight, just give a history lesson of our beloved posters that were banned, one of which was a buddy, and a great mind, and the other a great poster that just got caught up in the hysteria.
I misunderstood the jist of your post, but yes, basically, Afrolib is known for being an idiot. And, with this, I don’t want HA or conservatives to be associated with it. We’re on the same page, but it is up to Allah, Ed, or Michelle to make the final call. I don’t accept Afrolib’s apology because he is just an idiot. He’ll do it again.

So if a private business chooses not to do business with a private individual who makes inflammatory statements, it’s evidence of that business having a “totalitarian mindset”? Or is it only evidence of a “totalitarian mindset” to you because you happen to agree with those inflammatory view? Me thinks it’s the latter…

crr6 on October 18, 2009 at 3:15 PM

You mean like this kind of private business?

So it would have been OK for the Heart of Atlanta Motor Hotel to not rent to Martin Luther King because he made inflammatory statements?

Just testing how far the rot between your ears has spread.

I, for one, find honor in the above quote. For whatever it’s worth.

anuts on October 18, 2009 at 5:25 PM

Who are we to choose as arbiters of ‘ridiculous and objectionable things?’

In this case, a private business was the arbiter. They have a right to make that choice before contracting with someone. Do you disagree with this?

And then, what is the appropriate punishment for such thought crimes?

The private business choosing not to contract with that particular individual.

Would it be scary or “fascist” of Cheerios if they chose to stop sponsoring an Olympic athlete after the athlete made what they deemed an “objectionable” statement?

You’re confusing business choices made by private institutions with sanctions by the state. The latter is a from of free-speech the latter is an encroachment in free speech.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, Doc Zero.

You have so well encapsulated in this piece how any thinking person, no matter his or her political bent, should view this disgraceful attack on Rush Limbaugh.

Indeed, it is not just about him, as he so artfully pointed out himself. It’s about our nation and what we, or at least some who inhabit it, have become.

Dreams, as you aptly note, are priceless. But I would also add that the denial or destruction of them because of one’s political or religious (or even atheist) beliefs is no different than doing so because of their color or ethnicity.

And, if you think about it, the real sin of slavery was, and is in many places still today, not as much about one man owning another, but far more about the immoral taking by the former of the latter’s dreams and rights to follow them.

Rush often attributes his success to saying things that people inherently know are truths, in an entertaining and memorable way.

Thank you for so eloquently doing the same.

cjk on October 18, 2009 at 5:35 PM

crr6 on October 18, 2009 at 5:07 PM

You’re picking and choosing, really, deciding what you alone consider ‘racist’. Sorry, but racism isn’t subjective; it either is or it isn’t.

You see, you shouldn’t (for sake of true reason) keep moving the goal post. And that’s what libs do: change definitions to suit their immediate need. Or, realistically, their wants.

Though you haven’t directly called us racists, you believe in your deepest core that we are. I recall many of your posts, and in them you won’t bother to even really talk to us. You fire invective and unsubstantiated claims, rather than read what we believe in the posts we make.

We are decent people, but you don’t accept that even for a possibility. By your posts, you basically tell us we’re not worthy to so much as draw breath.

You accuse us of hate, when so many of your posts show contempt at a minimum, with so many others displaying your outright hate of us.

Yet, we’re like you: we all work for a living, love our families, and just want the liberty to live in peace. We don’t want to fight with our neighbors, and we don’t want to argue with our spouses. We all just want to live our lives, just as I imagine you do, too.

But you hate us, and you show it. You mock us, like we’re something other than human though we have loves and appreciate the love given to us.

You revile us, like we’re some kind of virus needing to be destroyed.

You attack our beliefs and our various religions, though two ministers did everything to stop Rush from buying into a losing team.

You, and others like you, seek with every post to tear out the hearts of the people here, who are basically of good nature and character. We, you and us, have political differences but by your posts you dare denigrate them, as if you have some imaginary high ground of morality. Ain’t no such thing.

Earlier, I fought against the idea Afrolib should be banned when others aimed for that. You don’t get that; you don’t get that Afrolib assailed other blacks–being at that moment a racist.

You don’t get that another liberal–and I posted his quotes–was totally racist, basically calling Rosa Parks a whiner.

Dragging a black man behind a pickup truck just for fact he’s black is racist. Criticizing Sharpton for his politics and how he makes a buck off the resentment among blacks that he instills is NOT racist.

Liberals need to understand that difference, which many don’t for whatever reason.

You buy into all those things and, basically, support them.

As a conservative, I have to ask the liberal that is you: What the fuck is wrong with you?

Liam on October 18, 2009 at 5:36 PM

I understand the context of the parties involved and I don’t believe I’m confusing state sanctions here. If I am following the story correctly (and I believe I am), it never reached the NFL. It was Dave Checketts who made this decision. It was made after he assured Rush that everything was taken care of as far as the controversy aspect. Checketts originally came to Rush with the proposal. It was only after the pressure that Checketts changed his mind. And it was built around falsely attributed quotes. It is this that I find dangerous.

What should be maddening, to those that love freedom, is this; that a group of useful idiots could quite literally ‘make stuff up’ to disparage someone whose beliefs they opposed, and do his reputation enough damage that he is denied the opportunity to become part-owner of a football team.

What’s maddening is that people (such as the Reverends Jackson and Sharpton) who make a living sowing discord, and who themselves have behaved reprehensibly, are treated as arbiters of ‘divisive behavior.’

See, Doctor Zero’s post was intended to inform.

You either lack the capacity to understand it, or choose to wilfully ignore it.

The issue is that several liberal reporters and columnists called Rush a racist and attributed false quotes too him. Quotes that were not just objectionable, but racist. And then this was used as the argumentative hinge for objecting to his NFL ownership.

True, were it merely an objection for reasons of avoiding political conflict, that would have been fine, but that’s not what happened.

NFL doesn’t want Rush, and that makes the people of Hotairland so mad.
But not so mad that you’d give up watching football altogether.

libertylady on October 18, 2009 at 6:30 PM

Dollayo on October 18, 2009 at 6:30 PM

Important question: Can the statement of 100% fact ever be considered racist? I’m not referring to any posts here today, but am merely asking a question to see what anyone thinks.

cjk on October 18, 2009 at 6:04 PM

Racism is the belief that one race has inherent moral or mental advantage over another, or that the defects of a particular person or set of persons extend to the entire race to which that group belongs.

With that thought in mind, facts arranged in a certain pattern can indeed be racist — particularly when they are designed to accentuate a perceived moral or mental advantage of one race over another. By the omission of certain other facts in a tautology, a lie can be created from statements, which on their surface, are 100% true.

The point: Facts can be taken out of context. When one is, and the context changes the meaning of the fact, the fact is actually a lie.

As an example, I can state that the smartest people on the planet to date were Albert Einstein and Leonardo DeVinci. Few will disagree with this statement. Both Albert and Leonardo were white. I think we have uniform truth there, too. Therefore…

I think Afrolib may have exited from the conversation. I guess claiming racism wasn’t working too well tonight. The word is losing its luster.

libertylady on October 18, 2009 at 6:43 PM

Americans who love to see the rich “get theirs” should be very careful about the groundwork they are laying. The poor and middle class in America are insanely rich by world standards. And the world is full of hungry angry peasants who would just love to watch a bunch of the American rich “get theirs” as well. And when you are only making $1,200. per year, are a family of 5 living in a 12×12 room with dirt floors, $20,000 to 50,000 a year, 2-3 cars, TV’s, cable, dish, hot water, cell phones and 3 precious meals a day is insanely rich!

JellyToast on October 18, 2009 at 4:03 PM

Some of these people have no world, nor historical, perspective. They live richer in so many ways than even the Kings and Queens did in England, or the Robber Barrons did in this country, just a few generations ago.

I remember as a kid in the eighth grade stopping by a classmates house with dirt floors, no electricity as I recall and only indoor water as a hand powered well pump was indoors.

There is little we can do to reverse the injustice of the St. Louis Rams affair, but we can make it up to Rush by giving him the chance to deliver a hell of a show on the day after Election Day, next year.

Amen to that, Doctor Zero! Extra bonus points if Palin is elected POTUS in 2012, as that would literally send so many on the other side of the aisle into shock and trauma. Frankly, I would expect nothing less than to see a mass exodus to Canada and Europe by those upper elite liberals who disparage Sarah and Rush on a daily basis.

I don’t understand why some people on this site have a problem with reading Doc’s posts because they are a bit longer

For the same reason many people are unable to read anything beyond the length of a comic book or sit through anything longer than a 30 minute television program. Their “educations” have, sadly, conditioned them to believe that every problem can be resolved in 30 minutes (22 with commercials) and in most cases stripped them of the ability to think rationally or logically.

oldleprechaun on October 18, 2009 at 7:09 PM

OK.

So how do you square that with the comment above (unclesmrgol on October 18, 2009 at 6:32 PM) that presents a context for factual statements?
.
.
We were always taught in anthropology that making cultural assumptions about either the researcher or the subject “prejudiced” the conclusions. Example: sub-Saharan Africans were less intellectually developed than white Europeans because they did not develop a system of written language by the time of Leonardo DaVinci. Reality: in spite of having a written language in many parts of Europe, only a minority could read and write until centuries after Leonardo’s death in 1519. Both continents (Europe and Africa) relied on oral traditions until the concepts of universal education were implemented. In fact, one of my grandparents was completely illiterate throughout her life.
