Defending the invincible
posted at 2:15 pm on October 18, 2009 by Doctor Zero
Almost every column written in defense of Rush Limbaugh over the last few days, following the vicious campaign to slander him as a racist, has included a statement along the lines of “Rush is rich, powerful, intelligent, and articulate, so he can take care of himself, and he’ll be just fine.” I don’t mean to disparage the authors of these sentiments, but I must disagree. I know the most popular conservative broadcaster in America doesn’t need some anonymous guest-author on a blog to defend him, but I’m going to do it anyway, without the slightest reservation due to his wealth and power.
Much strife and misery has been visited on this country by the idea that the rights and prerogatives of the rich and successful are diminished by their fortunes… that we should feel no remorse about seizing their property, or insulting their honor, because they’ll still be comfortably rich at the end of the day. We have become much too relaxed about laughing off vile slander, because the target can nurse his wounded soul from the plush accommodations of a West Palm Beach mansion. Honor is as valuable to the millionaire as to the pauper.
I’ll probably never be part of a consortium that purchases a football team, but I understand what it means to watch a dream bleed to death. My hopes and ambitions may be smaller than Rush Limbaugh’s, but they have exactly the same value to me. Whether those dreams are carved from pixels, paper, or platinum, they are equally priceless. It requires only a drop of the moral imagination utterly lacking in the people who slandered Limbaugh to guess what it feels like, when a man whose life revolves around words and ideas sees his dreams boiled away by words he didn’t speak, and ideas he has never held.
The events of the past week were about more than simply thwarting Limbaugh’s desire to buy into a football team. There was the naked greed of parasites like Al Sharpton, desperate to maintain his relevance in a world that has wisely stripped him of the power to destroy a man’s life with a phony rape allegation, or launch murderous riots. There was the blind personal hatred of Limbaugh, by people who long ago tired of watching him rewrite their plans for the part of America that refuses to submit to them. And, of course, this was the latest offensive in a bitter war against the ideas that Limbaugh has long served, as their most cheerful and effective defender. Limbaugh’s enemies in that war are angry because they’re frightened. They’re frightened because all of their estimates and projections said they should have been able to claim victory by now.
Backed up against the wall, and forced to admit the most damaging quotes used against Limbaugh were forgeries, his accusers are left stammering that he’s simply too “divisive” to be involved with ownership of an NFL team. What a bleak example of the totalitarian mindset! If you disagree with the approved ideas distributed by the collective, you’re “divisive” and unfit for membership in polite society. I suppose Limbaugh is saturated with divisiveness particles, whose half-life will extend for decades, but the warning to others is clear: rid yourselves of those “divisive” ideas and get with the program.
Perhaps the President could direct one of his many czars to prepare a list of certified “divisive” positions, and which aspects of society are closed to offenders. It would save people like David Checketts, the investor seeking to purchase the Rams, the time he wasted inviting Limbaugh to join his consortium. Imagine how much more convenient it would have been for Checketts, if he could have pulled up a handy whitehouse.gov web page and learned Rush was too divisive to be minority owner of a football team! The Homeland Security spectrum of terrorist alert levels could be used to measure divisiveness ratings. I’d be willing to give them an email address, so the system could send me a warning message when I approach Level Orange. What do you suppose the divisiveness rating for someone like Jeremiah Wright would be? He built a tidy personal fortune from his Ministry of Hate – would he be allowed to buy a stake in an NFL team?
Only the most gullible dupes, and people who rely on CNN for “news”, seriously think Rush Limbaugh is a racist. The dishonesty and cynicism behind dimwitted assertions that he wanted to buy an NFL team to role-play the life of a plantation owner is breathtaking. His accusers don’t really think he harbors some elusive racist demon, which he suppresses just long enough to become friends with Walter Williams, Clarence Thomas, Thomas Sowell, and Tony Dungy. The people who read this crap should be at least as angry over the insult to their intelligence as Limbaugh is about the insult to his honor. This kind of weapons-grade stupidity is one of the things America can no longer afford.
Limbaugh’s accusers want him burned at the stake for the crime of effective conservatism, not the racism they were so eager to lie about last week. The American public should think long and hard about which side of this ideological struggle should be on trial. Rush Limbaugh’s ideas did not produce a titanic deficit, double-digit unemployment, and global adversaries who can barely stop laughing at our President long enough to pretend they respect him. His ideas did not put disciples of Saul Alinsky, Chairman Mao, and Alex Jones in positions of power. His words are not deployed to conceal hundreds of billions in stolen “stimulus” money, thousand-page Mad Lib bills riddled with blank paragraphs, and massive offenses against individual liberty. His EIB Network endorses $1500 Sleep Number beds, not “saved or created” jobs costing half a million bucks apiece. Unlike the “Hope and Change” Administration, he doesn’t spend his three hours on the radio each weekday listing all the things you will no longer be allowed to do. He is the champion of ideas so powerful that his enemies fear the merest taste of them.
Rush Limbaugh has raised his voice in defense of freedom countless times over the years. I’m happy to exercise my freedom to raise my voice in defense of him. I invite you to do the same. It doesn’t matter if he doesn’t “need” it. He deserves it. All of us do. There is little we can do to reverse the injustice of the St. Louis Rams affair, but we can make it up to Rush by giving him the chance to deliver a hell of a show on the day after Election Day, next year. If CNN is foolish enough to continue employing cretins like Rick Sanchez by then, all of them should be turning in a very enjoyable performance on that day, as well.

Indeed. I found the whole affair bizarre, because it wasn’t like Limbaugh’s purchase of the Rams would have helped further conservatism or something. There was no good reason to stop him. I felt like we were in 5th grade again, watching some kids trying to get back at some other kid they didn’t like. (Limbaugh, of course, is no kid, but his opponents were acting like they were.)

Bravo!
Imagine how rich and powerful Rush would be if there wasn’t a relentless multimillion dollar smear campaign against him since he became prominent. Imagine if all the people who were duped into not listening because of slanders launched by rich and powerful leftists gave his show a chance.

Thanks so much Doctor Zero! You have a way of saying things that millions agree with. IMO, this whole Rush mess is a slap in the face of America. I am sick to death of all this ‘race’ thing everytime something does not go the way some thinks it should. I thought we were all passed that with bho, but it sure seems to be getting worse.

Rush often says, “Pioneers take the arrows.”
He took a big one for all conservatives with this one.
Yes, Rush has more money than most of us can conceive of. He got it the old fashioned way: He earned it.
But even with all this money, he couldn’t spend it on one thing he really wanted.
I thank Rush for all he has done.
I am a Rush 24/7 member and a Limbaugh Letter subscriber. I have paid Rush hundreds of dollars over the years. Rush has given me far more than I have given him.

RJGatorEsq. on October 18, 2009 at 2:27 PM
Rush can defend himself.
But the issue is bigger than Rush, it is about the left selectively using charges of racism to punish their opponents. From insignificant Mad King Charles rantings about crypto nazis and racists (even if they have to sock puppet the evidence to make their weak points) at LGF to organized campaigns to go after Limbaugh, it is a disturbing pattern. What is disturbing is it can ocasionally work–as it did with Rush Limbaugh.
We need to fight that.
Now the Rams are a crappy team and everyone knows Limbaugh is a Steelers fan, so perhaps their is providence involved in this. Part of it is the NFL is in negotiations with its players and the players union sided against Limbaugh, so the NFL decided it wanted to dodge this issue. Craven but typically corporate. Plus the NFL does not want an owner in the club (even a minority [no pun intended] owner who can use the bully pulpit of his show).
Mr. Joe on October 18, 2009 at 2:28 PM
THANK YOU DOCTOR ZERO!!
This was frustrating me in the other thread about Rush. The ones attacking him kept acting like “he’s got money, why should I worry about him?” The point being, this country was founded on the principle that all men are created equal; there are not some pigs better than other pigs, as it were. The rights of the wealthy are just as important as the rights of the poor. I don’t make a million, but I want those who do to have the same rights I do–to defend themselves against slander and injustice.
Now Sharpton wants to sue Rush: http://jammiewearingfool.blogspot.com/2009/10/comedy-gold-al-sharpton-threatens-to.html.
As Ace put it so succinctly at his site:

It doesn’t say much for the clowns running the NFL when they attack one of their biggest fans who is willing to become one of their biggest investors. Rush still has the money! He can and will invest it elsewhere; probably somewhere with a much better rate of return than the Rams ever could.
One expects agit-prop from CNN and MSNBC. That’s all they have left for their Left puppet masters. Yet when the NFL chases a world class investor away in practically the same month they welcome back Michael Vick that suggests the NFL needs to clean out the Augean Stables of Clintonian riff-raff apparently polluting the NFL home office.

By the, as I recall from a long ago torts class:
When one sues for libel, one claims one’s good character has been damaged. Therefore, one’s “good” character (or the lack therof) is an issue.
Truth is generally a complete defense to libel.
When the plaintiff is a public figure (and imagine Sharpton claiming he is not), one must prove actual malice on the part of the defendant.
Oh, I bet Rush is saying, “Please, Brer Fox/Al, please don’t throw me into that briar patch…”

I wasn’t surprised so much by CNN’s behavior, or MSNBC, et cetera. What was completely shocking was the level of hatred aimed at Rush by so many sports writers. Where did that come from? Why?? I have listened faithfully to Rush since the early 90′s, and I have never heard ANYTHING that could be taken as racist. The Left just needs to have a derisive name for any who disagree with their radical agenda. And now the sports world seems to have thrown in lock, stock and barrel with that deranged group of liberal whack jobs. What is this world coming to???
varnson on October 18, 2009 at 2:35 PM
This one of the best lines I have ever read!
Anyone who carried those false quotes should be fired or either resign, their contracts terminated immediately. Rush didn’t deserve the abuse dished to him this week and in such a manner. If he’s truly such a racist there should have been plenty of genuine quotes to which the reporters could have referred.
It’s also sheer ignorance to try passing the notion that though the quotes are fake, these reporters still ‘know’ Rush is racist. It’s ignorant of them to pass off that crap in the first place, and more ignorant to think everyone outside their own elite ilk believes them.
Trying to hurt Rush’s heart shows where the hearts of liberals abide.

“He deserves it” is the key phrase….Bush was destroyed because his party leadership abandoned him at the first sign of attack, and sowed the seeds of their own demise a few years later. Limbaugh has done more for the idea of conservatism than anyone since Reagan..He deserves support from slander by all folk of good will.

This one will bring out the trolls…….
Rush is Sarah Palin, Part Deux: He is the Other Big Target: the conservative icon whose mere existence drives the libs crazy and works them into a vicious frenzy of flailing attacks that, however wimpy and pathetic and dishonest, are meant to destroy the Target and damage all of us
Rush is rich, but vulnerable: The Obomma-momma government apparatus can go after him through the Unfairness Doctrine and because he is a public figure he can be libeled and slandered with almost no chance of vindication in court.
Libs know that if they can ruin Rush they can damage conservatism, so they will never stop attacking and trying to destroy him. They will lie, cheat, steal, etc from dawn til dusk, every live-long day…….
If you value your freedom ( even if you don’t agree with some or most of what Rush says ) you will fight on his side to defend his right to conduct his business affairs without the recurring Feeding Frenzies that the DoucheBag Media has become addicted to more than Rush was ever addicted to medications. Ultimately, his fate is your fate: You ain’t rich but the Song Remains The Same: When libs attack him they attack YOU
Defend yourself………by any means necessary

Well written as always. But it does bring up an interesting, as yet, unmentioned point — where were defenders of Rush, like Tony Dungy and others of color who know the man not to be a racist? It would have been worth the price of admission to see Michael Wilbon stare down Tony Dungy and tell him he didn’t recognize racism when he saw it.
While I realize that people of color risk the tag of “Uncle Tom” or worse when they espouse thoughts not with the collective, you would hope they would recognize the danger in allowing any sort of mob mentality or value test for admittance to a business venture.

You really think Limbaugh thought he had a chance of getting in on a team deal in this political climate?
Keep stirring the pot and let the scum in liberal pot rise to the top. Swat them down, build ratings, and put more money in the bank for the next NFL team available in a better time.

It’s a totalitarian mindset when outsiders, in this case Sharpton and Jackson, have ‘discussions’ with the head of a business (read: strongarm).
It’s not the same as a business deciding on its own whether or not to engage a contract. It’s akin to Planned Parenthood wanting to buy condoms from a supplier but a church group takes it upon itself to ‘have discussions’ with the supplier to stop PP from purchasing from that supplier.
And, worse, lies were fabricated to freeze Rush out. Moral equivalence, I guess.

Janos Hunyadi on October 18, 2009 at 3:35 PM
And another thing to the putztrolls: Sharpton and Jackson are both…~drum roll~…ministers!
I guess the religious types libs hate so much got in on something, didn’t they?
Oh, the irony of it all!

Excellent, Doctor Zero!
I agree with several others, that you really should be one of the main bloggers at HotAir.
centralcal on October 18, 2009 at 3:36 PM
Dittos to all that you said Dr.Zero except that Rush’s mansion is located in Palm Beach not West Palm Beach.
Puhleeease, keep that straight.
ncjetsfan on October 18, 2009 at 3:37 PM
Doctor Zero’s posts are consistently excellent. I think part of the reason is that they are less frequent than Ed’s and AP’s and he may have more time to carefully craft them. This careful attention, in addition to his fluid writing style, makes them a joy to read.
SKYFOX on October 18, 2009 at 3:38 PM
We are really far from that point.
If Rush won’t fight for himself – won’t spend the money to sue people who need to be sued – then he has no right to ask us to fight his battles for him and, to be honest, we are idiots if we did. He needs to engage the dragons and then we can jump in and help.
In other words, people who have the ability to fight for themselves ought to start before being helped. Those that can’t fight for themselves, the Joe The Plumbers of the world, are the people who really need all of our help.
TheBigOldDog on October 18, 2009 at 3:38 PM
Unless the “Justice Brothers” or media do something incredibly stupid, suspect Rush will play this down on Monday. It’s the left’s move. Sharpton has opened his mouth prematurely (what else is new?) but that’s all.
Thank you again Dr. Your standard is Olympian in the Grecian use. It’s nice to get a “good guy fix” on a Sunday.
Caststeel on October 18, 2009 at 3:40 PM
I wish Sharpton would try. The fun part is that the Wall Street Journal is now owned by Rupert Murdoch. What a conversation that would be. Heh.

Another magnificently written piece, Dr Zero. My dreams are not as large as Rush’s, but they are ultimately as futile: I wish I could write half as well as you.
But they are still precious dreams to me.

Birds of a feather and so on.
Or maybe it’s that Lib Flu is contagious. But it only infects weak minds. Problem is it’s never fatal, only crippling.
Caststeel on October 18, 2009 at 3:47 PM
This is all so wildly funny and ironic! It’s only a week, the start of a major blowback. The Tea Partiers got this ball rolling, and now the Right is fired up. We see how much power we have, and are confident it can grow.
The Left had to use lies to harm a fellow Citizen, and that’s not lost on those considered independent. I truly believe more is to follow. Maybe hit-and-run Sanchez goes the way Dan Blather did, and for the same reason. Except Killer Rick won’t get such a graceful exit.
I hope people go after getting him fired, too. Rush is basically a decent human being. Every year he does a show to raise money for the Leukemia Foundation and, while his gifts are personal and private, it’s rumored what he gives from his own wealth numbers to seven figures.
Hard to hate a man who is so generous.
Liam on October 18, 2009 at 3:47 PM
Now Sharpton wants to sue Rush: http://jammiewearingfool.blogspot.com/2009/10/comedy-gold-al-sharpton-threatens-to.html.
well, i guess someone should ask sharpton to actually honor the court’s decision in the Tawana Brawley case, and pay the $65K in damages he still has yet to pay.
viviliberoomuori on October 18, 2009 at 3:48 PM
Here’s the link to the show last night. Huck had two main points, one was asserted at the beginning and one was asserted at the end. The first revolved around the hypocrisy of the NFL to accept people like Vick and Plaxico, but then shrink at the idea of Rush being a part of the NFL. I can’t stand that argument, for it focuses on the nature of the NFL rather than the substance of what has transpired. As if to assume that if the NFL WERE free of all other controversies, then they’d be justified for ousting Rush over his “divisiveness”. The other point he makes at the end starts down the right path, but comes up way short. He talks about the hypothetical “liberal” equivalent to Limbaugh being shut out of owning an NFL team. This falls short because it reduces the argument to the standard, “well, how would YOU like it if…” What is missing from this discussion is precisely what Doc. Zero brought to the table in this entry: the idea that “wealth” is not the eternal salve for injustice; also the idea that not only is there a predetermined idea of “divisive”, which includes in its definition a Conservative worldview, but also that that idea can justify, in many peoples mind, both racial slander as well as a passive defense from people who should know better, predicated upon the idea of “well he deserves it for all the other stuff he said” or “well he’s not going to lose any money off this.”
Weight of Glory on October 18, 2009 at 3:48 PM
Say, GE wants to dump NBC Universal. Let Rush snap that up instead, and he can appoint himself the color commentator for the games!

C’mon guys. You too, Old Dog. Bitter and clinging is just practice for being irate. Tireless requires practice.
Get with the program

Yikes. I have to admit guilt in maintaining this argument in my own mind during the course of the week
Thanks for pointing out where this argument’s logic leads. You’re absolutely right.

Poor Rush. He’s like teh Rosa Parks of the commentariat, always made to sit at the back of the bus. Poor whiny baby, blubbering all the way to the bank.
Grow Fins on October 18, 2009 at 3:56 PM
I would imagine Rush would love for Sharpton to actually file suit against him. I know I would love to see the fireworks generated by that and I do not see any good outcome for Sharpton.

Thank you Doctor Zero!
What I can’t understand is how Obama could have let such a perfect opportunity slip through his fingers. He could have called off the attack dogs and allowed or even encouraged Rush becoming a minority owner. Then during the lockout next year when we learn that the NFL is “too big to fail” and Obama steps in to nationalize the NFL, he could have had his new NFL czar fire Rush. Oh well, just one more fumbled opportunity by the all powerful Ozbama.
Now if Rush can just be patient until after the 2012 election when we get a conservative in the White House and have control of both the House and the Senate, then he may be able to buy an entire NFL team all by himself when the NFL is re-privatized.
I love football, but I love my country more. I am grateful for what Rush has done to preserve freedom in American and shed the light of truth on the radical liberal left that has become mainstream in the Democratic Party.

People who think it’s no big deal to attack or steal from “the rich” just because they are rich do not understand they are laying the foundation for their own gallows.
Lay aside for a moment all of the obvious philosophical, moral and ethical reasons on why it is wrong to tear down and attack a rich man’s house and just consider the following.
Obama and many of the libs want to take us to a world system without borders. Obama himself while in Germany said he was a “citizen of the world.” It doesn’t take much effort to listen to the words coming out of the mouths of libtards to get a good sense of the direction they would like to take America.
American average income for 2007 was approx 50,000. We’ve heard the statistics about the so called poor in America. Many own their own homes or live in fairly nice sized apartments. Almost all the poor have a car, TV’s, cable, dish, eating 3 or more meals a day and more.
Hows that compare to the median income of say,,, Mexico?
In 2002 the average disposable income there was just $6,143.
El Salvador? $6,200. Ethiopia? $800. Brazil? $10,100.
Nicaragua? $2,900.
Americans who love to see the rich “get theirs” should be very careful about the groundwork they are laying. The poor and middle class in America are insanely rich by world standards. And the world is full of hungry angry peasants who would just love to watch a bunch of the American rich “get theirs” as well. And when you are only making $1,200. per year, are a family of 5 living in a 12×12 room with dirt floors, $20,000 to 50,000 a year, 2-3 cars, TV’s, cable, dish, hot water, cell phones and 3 precious meals a day is insanely rich!

No no don’t be hard on yourself. I used it too. And it’s ok in certain contexts, in a kind of a jocular vein. But when a former presidential candidate is on the highest rated cable channel, the bar is set a bit higher.
