A few final thoughts from Western CPAC

Later today, I’ll have more video from interviews at the Western CPAC conference, but I want to offer a few final thoughts from what I found to a disappointing effort from the event. First, the event did not turn out a large number of attendees despite its fifth year in existence, showing that not much momentum has been made by the organizers. The exhibitor “hall” consisted of about five vendors, one of whom got kicked out (more later on that). The agenda included activist such as birthers and impeachment activists, along with candidates who did their best to distance themselves from them.
The nadir of the conference for myself personally, as well as some of my colleagues on Blogger Row, was the panel that featured many of us on the impact of New Media. The inclusion of one panelist, unknown to any of us, had some of us stumped; it turned out to be a sponsor who apparently demanded time on the panel, even though he runs a fax-blasting service. He proceeded to call me “rude” for expressing my opinion on this blog of the presentation of impeachment for “criticizing my hosts,” which proved an immediate buzz-killer for an audience that had just built energy from Stephen Kruiser’s hilarious take on how easy it was to get Twitter (“It’s just typing,” Kruiser told the audience.) The same sponsor then proceeded to trash blogs, Twitter, Facebook, and every part of New Media with the exception of …. fax blasting, leaving most of us wondering why he was considered for a contribution on New Media and its potential.
The Western CPAC event is not officially part of the traditional CPAC convention, but the ACU is listed as one of its sponsors, and ACU chair David Keene was in attendance in the entire time. In fact, our friend John Ziegler attended for the express purpose of getting Keene to answer for his pay-for-play shenanigans with FedEx earlier this year as well as Keene’s attacks on Sarah Palin. The situation turned ugly, as Mediaite reports; Western CPAC ejected Ziegler after he followed Keene into the speaking hall, which followed Keene calling Ziegler an “asshole” and saying he wanted to punch Ziegler. I only caught the aftermath, where Ziegler tried to get Keene to write a nice column about Palin for the cash Ziegler on hand:
Unfortunately, this got even uglier afterward. Ziegler had been selling his Media Malpractice documentary as one of the exhibitors, for which Western CPAC got paid, and only one of five such booths at the conference. Ziegler was expelled and removed from his panel, and had agreed to go if the organizers didn’t make a big deal about it. Instead, one of the organizers decided to make it public from the dais during Saturday’s lunch rather than letting the situation go, which prompted Ziegler to grab the mike and answer the allegations, and Ziegler got escorted from the premises. John’s going to have much more at his site later tonight, so be sure to keep up with it there, and he’ll be on my show tomorrow to talk more about it.
This comes as a piece with the New Media panel and the fringe nature of some of the sponsors. While I had several great conversations with Floyd Brown and believe him to be genuine about his pursuit of impeachment, it was made clear to me by several sources at the conference that they included it primarily as a fund-raising mechanism instead of a serious argument. The general theme of the conference appeared to be mainly a sales job for the personal benefit of the sponsors, and not the promotion of real conservative ideas. And quite frankly, after spending several hundred dollars to attend an event just to be told that dissent is “the heighth of rudeness” and that bloggers should shut up and defer to their movement elders was just a little too much too take.
I won’t return to events sponsored by the same organizations in the future. The big problem with the conservative movement has been its self-appointed leaders telling others to shut up and follow in lockstep, and I don’t think any so-called movement leaders taking that approach have the first foggy clue about what the New Media and Tax Parties mean.
Addendum: I did enjoy talking to candidates like Steve Poizner and Chuck DeVore, two potential bright spots for California conservatives, as well as the terrific bloggers on Blogger Row: Melissa Clouthier, Gateway Pundit’s Jim Hoft, John Sexton and Morgen Richmond from Verum Serum, John Schulenberg from Infidels are Cool, Caleb Heimlich, Rachel Alexander, Stephen Kruiser, and my old friend Ed Driscoll from Pajamas Media. Elizabeth Crum was wonderful as the Blogger Row coordinator, and we all owe her a lot of thanks for her support.

I thought we wanted a “big tent” Ed?
Why are these guys considered verboten but Pro-Choice folks are cool?
Why is the advocacy of the taking of human-life more main stream than someone who advocates impeaching Obama because he’s violated the constitution.
Riddle me that.

But nobody swung right? That’s why I like Christopher Hitchens he’s my kind of A$$hole. At least he gets in real fights in foreign countries like Lebanon, where one would expect they already have a problem with the West, just sayin…. The British are way ahead of Americans when it comes to yelling at each other in Parliament. SEE Joe Wilson “You Lie” And an inebriated Christopher Hitchens mocking, those who would make us submit to their world reality.

This is why the attacks on Hot Air from Charles Johnson and others are so ridiculous. Ed, Allah and Michelle are not mind-numbed robots…they tell it like it is.
Thanks for all you do, Ed.

There you go again, Ed, being rude for expressing a differing opinion. How dare you?!
And as to you not being gracious to your host, but instead criticizing him, please try follow the example that we posters at Hot Air always demonstrate. We’d never be so rude to criticize our hosts. So, let that be a lesson to you young man!

You know what, Ed?
We had RonPaulians that attempted to hijack a huge Tea Party that I helped organize. They are well organized, fanatical, disruptive, divisive and they cause trouble. That’s exactly what happened to your group.
You will know them when you see them. Pre-printed tee shirts, bumper stickers with “End The Fed”. We were able to deal with the Paulians by publically asking them to leave. The crowed watched them pack up their boxes of tee shirts, their microphones, their tables, their audio speakers, their flags and their pre-printed signs. We marched them down the block and out of the party to the cheers of the true Patriots.
RonPaulians are a dangerous threat because they are not grass roots. They are also very savvy with the internet and apparently have access to information on gatherings, protests and meetings.

I’m not a Ronulan and even some of the things Ron Paul says shocks me. However – you’re wrong that they’re not grass roots. They were grass roots before we Tea Party folks got off our asses and off our couches.
There is a lot of energy in the Ronulan movement – rather than condemn it – I’d like to find a way to harness it for the good of the new GOP.
I believe there is a way to do that. I believe we can find a way to bind Conservative Republicans, Libertarians, Ronulans, and Fiscal Conservatives and independents to form a governing majority for this nation.
We won’t do it by condemning them though.
What pisses me off is the fact that too many people want to reach out to those who would turn a blind eye to the slaughter of innocent life. Those guys are “legit” in their eyes.
But someone who who believes the Fed should be eliminated – no – sorry – that guy need not apply.
Completely crazy.
HondaV65 on October 18, 2009 at 5:56 PM
Ron Paul needs to come out (if he is a true Republican Conservative….) and tell his followers to knock it off. Otherwise, we will have Obama, Pelosi and the other A-holes forever.
suzyk on October 18, 2009 at 5:59 PM
We need another Buckley/Birchers moment within the conservative movement. Small government, increased personal freedom does not mean accepting birthers and impeachers as mainstream.

I don’t have anything against Ron Paul. But please understand that his followers exhibit very strange behavior.
Back in the days when LGF was a legitimate blog, whenever there was a poll, Charles used to leave an option: Ron Paul. If you recall, the Paulians flooded the internet, skewing polls in favor of their candidate. They’re large in number and short on substance and they will sully any true, conservative movement IMHO.
Best regards,

What has happened to David Keene and the ACU?
fourdeucer on October 18, 2009 at 6:20 PM
Capitol Capture.
steveegg on October 18, 2009 at 6:21 PM
Ziegler’s the man!!!
It’s disappointing that this event turned out the way it did. The only highlights were Ed’s interviews and Ziegler. The ACU doofus should be thrown out of his position after this scandal came to light months ago! The GOP needs a lot of cleansing but it looks like, as Glenn Beck said, corruption has taken over both parties. Look at what’s happening to Hoffman. It’s a disgrace.

Who are you talking about here, Ed?
BigD on October 18, 2009 at 6:30 PM
I totally agree with that statement … they do act strange to my estimation but …
They also have a lot of energy. I live in the South – and I was both impressed and annoyed by all the hand made Ronulan signs that sprung up all over the coast. Some were even placed in completely illegal locations – yet there they were.
Now … when I look at that movement I ask myself – how do we get that intensity on our side?
It’s not about “moderating” the party. It’s about harvesting and hoarding the “intensity” in the political unrest out there.
We’ve got it with the Tea Party movement now – and that is why the GOP Ayatollah’s are living on borrowed time. It’s our party now.
But we shouldn’t ever sit still. We need more and more intensity.
Sorry – I don’t see any intensity with the Pro-Choice crowd. So remind me why we want to court them?
I see a lot of intensity in the Ronulans – I’d sooner see us find a way to win them to our side.
Birthers have intensity too. Impeachers also. Beckers also – I’ll not shout them down if they want to help us.
HondaV65 on October 18, 2009 at 6:32 PM
Don’t know who Ed’s talking about but I can think of a few …

Ayatollah John Cornyn

Honda, with all due respect. I agree with your point, but the Paulians can be toxic.
Ed posted that one exhibitor demanded face time with the crowd and with microphone in hand. This is EXACTLY what happened at our Tea Party. We, in good faith, gave the mike to this dude who totally turned off the crowd with his rants about conspiracy and why we should have elected Ron Paul. Again, I’ve got nothing against Ron Paul as an individual. I have a big problem with his following. They are toxic, and they are exactly what the CJ’s of the world seek to discredit the grassroots patriot movement.

Oh, and always remember…..Tim Pawlenty was their Keynote speaker. If Palin had been their speaker, she would be tied in with the birthers and be broadcast internationally.
Will Pawlenty be tied to this frige?
Was it a bad decision for him to be there?

RINO Chris Christie supporting Hannity NO
bill30097 on October 18, 2009 at 7:25 PM
The natural coalition that can turn the nation around are:
Conservatives (this includes the non-Christians ok AP)
Christians (all denominations)
Libertarians
I like Ron Paul, the problem with those that market him is that they don’t know how to be civil. Anyone who’s willing to stand up to the banking cartel is usually cool with me. I actually have a bigger problem with the Rushtards, Hannitoids, and Levinsky’s. They are way too “GOP at all costs” for me. Last I followed their lead I fell for the Bush stuff. No more.
True_King on October 18, 2009 at 7:25 PM
Ed,
I’m sorry that it turned out that way, because there is much to be learned by listening to knowledgeable people who are trying to help an organization overcome missteps.
We have had similar meetings be successful when we were able to involve key policy leaders in panel discussions.
Step 1: Ask them to grab a pen and paper.
Step 2: List the 20 (or forty) concerns – and the 20 (or forty) things that could be done to help make a positive contribution.
Step 3: Review and discuss. Sometimes we learn things are indeed happening behind the scenes that ate not publicized; sometimes there are things that have been missed – and can be addressed quickly; and sometimes there are issues that we just have to leave because “the time isn’t right”.
If policy leaders are not willing to meet on such terms (as this venue suggests they were not) we may have big problems from the start. If that’s the case, use the conference to regroup and reschedule.
We’ve had good results using the above format.
We are? You friendly neighborhood Gunbloggers.
Our audience? The NRA and NRA-ILA.
At the end of the day, we believe we out-lobbied the lobbyists. Several things were but into play immediately with much success.

At our “March on the Media” Tea Party in Chicago yesterday we “developed” a Larouchie problem early on. They set up a table/tent with a HUGE Obama as Hitler sign and were soliciting signatures for some cause. They’re genuine racists who show up at these things to make us look bad.
We also had the resident Ronulan/end the fed media hog there.

So much for a big tent.
.
Remember when McCain threw his hat in the ring for POTUS in 1999? Democrats howled for him to release his medical records & birth certificate. They were not labeled “birthers” or “fringe”. You have to ask yourself why anyone, in either party, would allow those who seek proof of eligibility (not an electronic copy/facsimile) to be the subject of ridicule.
.
John McCain released 1,500 pages of medical records.
Obama’s “released” a 6 paragraph note from his doctor.
.
Accepting electronically-posted copies of “proof” and scant records sets a dangerous precedent.
.
Americans have a right to demand answers (and many are excericising it) as to who Obama is and why he has left barely a footprint in 48 years.
.
As for the GOP, unless and until their cannibalising stops, they should recognize that their Republican-lite tent could end up in the wind.

What’s happened is that Keene has become way too self-important to be of any use to the conservative movement anymore. He’s going to be consigned to the dustbin of history sooner rather than later, in my opinion.

I live in CA and barely heard anything about WCPAC. And believe me… i’m on a lot of political spam lists, both snail mail and online.
That’s the exact opposite of CPAC, where i receive email reminders nearly a year before the event.
If i had heard earlier, i might have actually attended. Although now it seems like i may be better off planning for the “real” thing next February.

I’m very reluctant to get involved with any people or organizations re politics, due to the kinds of things Ed describes.
But still I’ve made a couple of forays because… well, because I at least wanted to try to contribute in whatever way I could.
As a result I’ve gotten the opportunity to work with Michelle Malkin, most notably on the artwork for the cover of her NYTimes bestseller Culture of Corruption.
My experience with her has been uniformly great. In case anyone doubts it, I assure you that when it comes to business, Michelle Malkin is unwaveringly honest, fair, generous and encouraging. Just as I expected she would be.
I’ve also been lucky enough to work with Michael O from the North Texas Tea Party. He’s doing wonderful work and I’m privileged to have been able to participate in a small way.
But I’ve also had a bad experience or two. Won’t mention names or go into detail but there are some self-servers and a few outright nutcases out there.
Oh well but Western CPAC sounds like it’s not happening now, and never was. Good riddance really. Let it die and be replaced by something better.
Gilda on October 18, 2009 at 11:55 PM
Ed,
We need to start ignoring these self appointed leaders of conservatives. I think we need a big purge and this is the right moment.
I believe the next 2 election cycles are going to be critical and we need to really back conservatives in the republican primaries with money and time. Get involved in your local establishment GOP and wrest control.
Even if that means opposing the so called moderates and ideologues. If these guys had better ideas we won’t be in such miserable situation. Any time you hear these a$#H@*@s mouthing any of their nonsense tell them they are the reason we are here. If they ask for support we need to start with HELL NO.
PS: I have thrown 3 letters from John McCain for support into the dustbin.

Quite right. Paulian “interlopers” need to be harnessed, not evicted, because their cause is also right. The system of people ‘voting’ themselves money causes much of the social ills of America. The Fed system allows this, because a pacified people ignore looting and corruption.

Rand Paul has different views than his father. Right now we need as many people with free market principals in congress as possible. We need to get rid of all these big government types. You should give Ron Paul credit for always wanting to shrink the size of government and cut taxes.
