Gallup wonders: What happened to Palin’s favorable rating?

Worth posting if only to lay down a marker about where her favorables were before the book was released. At 40/50, there’s nowhere to go but up. Hopefully.
Palin became a bit of a sensation after John McCain tapped her as his running mate last August. But over the course of the campaign, her image suffered, going from a 53% favorable rating immediately after the 2008 Republican National Convention to 42% by the end of the campaign.
Palin’s ratings have not recovered, and her current 40% favorable rating is the lowest for her since she became widely known after last year’s Republican convention…
Palin could compete for the 2012 nomination because she is still widely liked by Republicans — 69% have a favorable opinion of her while only 25% view her unfavorably. But she may have difficulty succeeding in the general election, given that Democrats have overwhelmingly negative opinions of her, and independents view her more negatively than positively.
They offer no explanation for the slide but it’s not a mystery. Follow the link and see for yourself when the divergence between her favorable and unfavorable numbers started to grow. Anything important happen this past July? It’s not just Gallup either. If you scan Pollster.com’s poll of polls on her net favorables dating back to last year, you’ll find that she was pretty near even as recently as … mid-July, when suddenly the slide begins. In fact, Gallup’s numbers today are actually an improvement for her: The last three polls taken showed her approval in the 30s and her disapproval in the mid-50s. Proof positive, I guess, that her resignation has resonance with voters and will be a major issue in the primaries if she runs. I’ll bet Huck’s gaming out the “America can’t afford a quitter” ads as we speak.

I have passionately supported candidates in the past, I am focused right now on local, Senate, gubernatorial, and House elections, so my passion is stretched a bit thin.
I dont know how you get “too cool for the world” from what I said though. Care to explain?

Right. The cost to Sarah Palin is immediate and real.
But the lost to all conservatives is long term, because it’s been demonstrated that you can drive an honest, efficient and popular governor from office with the financial cost of frivolous ethics charges – and her fellow conservatives did not stand up for her.

I don’t understand why anyone would commit to someone for 2012 in 2009. None of the contenders have really done much impressive.
As for Palin, she will have to do some work to persuade people outside of the base she is for real. I’m not quite sure how she is going to rebut the “quitter” charge. Not saying its impossible, but I’m having trouble seeing what she would say that would persuade people.

HotAir is OVERWHELMINGLY pro-Palin. Just look at that latest poll AP conducted in his Huckabee pump post. Palin supporters outnumber Pawlenty supporters 10-1 and Huckabee supporters 15-1 on Hotair.
So we have one Pawlenty supporter (Ed) and one Huckabee pumper (Allah), who combined represents just 10% or so of total HotAir readers.
Why not make Doctor Zero a regular contributor on HotAir? He is more in sync with us that Ed or Allah can ever hope to be.
And regarding these meaningless polls, I would just note that Sarah has been skyrocketing on InTrade today to a new record high.
While Guiliani did lead in several polls prior to 2008 he never gained much on InTrade. People who are putting money on the table are more apt than polls at predicting who will ultimatley be victorious.

It has been said before, but can not be emphasized enough. After having resigned as governor and with only Facebook as a platform what did Palin accomplish? Those remarkably brilliant elites in Congress just wanted to play with us commoners. It’s a game for them. They forgot that roaming the frozen tundra in a far off place called Alaska, there lives amongst the most common of commoners a woman named Sarah. One day after killing a moose for the winter foodstock and thinning out the local predatory wolf population, whilst getting her children ready for school before heading down to Anchorage to run the State government (her day job from which she did resign), she read this ponderous manuscript intended to confuse. Within short order Sarah distilled this convolution: “DEATH PANELS RUN BY UNKNOWN, UNELECTED GOVERNMENT BUREAUCRATS”, she proclaimed. The elite hooted and hollored. Ridicule dripped from all their mouths. She’s a common fool, and a radical to boot. She didn’t even attend Harvard or Yale. How could she figure out the deception we so carefully crafted within these many many words? She barely knows the location of Russia! But somehow, there it was, so simple, so clear…DEATH PANELS is now the only description we hear. And Sarah Palin is a woman many of us hold dear.

You want to know what happened to Palin? 4 words: Randy Scheuneman Steve Biegun. Hired consultant/advisers fresh from the GOP Hierarchy teaching Sarah how to sound like a good, moderate Republican. Exactly what the Conservative Base does NOT want to hear. A continuous stream of polished, over cautious GOP talking points. All designed to placate a hostile MSM. These 2 GOP bozo’a are convincing Sarah that its “ok” to delete the conservative voting electorate completely out of the equation. Darvin Dowdy
Darvin Dowdy on October 17, 2009 at 12:26 AM
Stupidity squared!
Hell, even Reagan’s son, Michael, has said she is basically his dad in a skirt and heels!
Sarah, who actually grew up in a log cabin, has studied Reagan most of her life. She quotes him often, and is following the exact path that he took to the 1980 blowout.
Frankly, and this is no disrespect to our greatest President, I think Sarah will be better than Reagan. She has the benefit of learning from both what he did right, and his mistakes. Plus she has some incredible political instincts of her own.
As far as “infatuation” nah. I love the gal, but not for the reasons you think. I love her because she is REAL. I love her because she has a lifelong record of getting things done.
I love her because absolutely no one is as politically fearless as she is. The woman is a warrior.
But she is also just like Reagan. Sarah is an optimist. She sees America as a positive force in the world, and she isn’t afraid to say it.
You’ll NEVER hear the unbridled enthusiasm for America from RINOs like Mittens, Huckaphony, or T-Paw. They are just as bad as the communists, always apologizing for America’s greatness.
Sarah doesn’t have that problem. She knows first hand who and what makes America work. Unlike Mitt, Mr Clean, or the rest, Sarah has had dirt under her fingernails and sweat dripping off her brow from hard work.
You simply won’t find a better prepared person to lead this nation out of tyranny and back to it’s proper place as the world’s leader.
Sarah Palin is world class. She has a world class mind. And as far as supporters, the world is her oyster. She has a more solid base than anyone in politics, including Teh Won.
Palin supporters are very well aware of her record as Mayor, AGCC Chair, and Governor. And the REASON why Palin supporters will never, ever leave her, is because we know there are no surprises (besides pleasant ones) ahead.
Too many people mistake the support of Palin as the same cult of personality thing Obama had going on. Most Obama supporters had absolutely no idea who he was, or what he was about. He might as well have been a cartoon character. Nothing about his image is real.
People support Sarah Palin strongly because they have taken the time to study up on her.
I’ve said it before. I learned about her right after she became Governor. After the first few things I learned about her, I knew she’d be POTUS some day. Before we even had a nominee in 2008, her name was on the tip of my tongue as the one who should be VP.
Since I first heard of her, I have learned more about her, written extensively about her as a blogger, and even reviewed a book about her.
The more I learn, the more I know I was right on the money. Frankly, it’s rare in life that the more you learn about someone, a public figure you admire, the more you like ‘em. Usually, learning more kinda takes the sheen off. Not so with Sarah. It’s actually very refreshing.
The bottom line is this. I really don’t care what silly argument the naysayers come up with, because it is just that, silly. If Sarah Palin runs in 2012, and there is absolutely no reason to think she won’t, she will not only win, she will win big.
Why?
Because she’s REAL!

Scheuneman’s working for Pawlenty. He’s got a bunch of McCain staffers on the payroll. Remember Redstate said these people should never be allowed near another campaign again, and many Republicans share that sentiment.

Not even Obama could draw larger crowds than Palin — for pure stump events on the campaign trail. She is a political star and excites people. Right now she is laying low, but I have a feeling she can still campaign like nobody’s business… and she IS likable. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be so man lies made up about her.

I’ll take misogyny for $200, Alex. Name a male politician who saw their children attacked as viciously as Sarah Palin’s were. Chelsea Clinton was supposedly called a dog. Willow Palin was called a whore. Sarah Palin was called just about everything you could imagine, and none of it had anything to do with her ability or her actual record. That is not equal treatment, and it’s a far cry from chivalry.

There’s plenty of time. She’s got clear vision, knows right from wrong and is a realist. There’s plenty of time to get tired of those who want to ‘get ahead’ in the race right off the starting line. The woman is patient as well as smart.

gary4205: hope you’re right & me wrong. But I feel that Sarah has fallen into a trap set by the msm & GOP Hierarchy. The same trap that most Repub’s fall into. They get mauled by the msm and they spend the rest of their careers trying to prove to the msm that, “hey, I’m really a broad thinking, open minded person. Willing to cross over the isle and be inclusive.” When what these GOP types should do is understand that one doesn’t ride headlong into an ambush like Gen. Custer. Sarah needs to restrict her media relations only to “friendlies” and cut off all relations w/the hostile, left biased msm. Also, Sarah needs to return her focus and attentions on the voters: Mom/Pop middle America. Issues important to them. These GOP snakes will lead her off into the opposite direction – if she continues to allow them. DD
Darvin Dowdy on October 17, 2009 at 11:09 AM
Boy, Squid Shark is just ready to attack! Yikes! Posey is right, there’s time, lots. If the haters would find out what she actually did in Alaska with the Republicans and the oil company’s and oh so much more they would hopefully change their minds, but who knows some people are always in attack mode. Sarah has the support of the mom’s of this country that you don’t even know and don’t hear about. They are out there and coming together. It may take some time but like Posey said there’s time. We have your back Sarah!!! To another patriot, thank you Anita!!! Moms, go to asamom.org and sign up.

I am not “waiting to attack” so back off. Palin has done nothing that indicates to me that she is ready to be president. The fact that she is going to spend the next few years not amassing a administrative or legislative record but instead being a member of the chattering classes makes me believe that she will not show me any of thos indicators any time soon.
Her record in Alaska is mixed as far as I can see, she was a reformer, yes but she did not do anything so outstanding to make me think that 3/4 of a term as Governor of Alaska qualifies her to lead this nation.

Only some of the Palin posts really show the underlying power of her movement.
This is not Ron Paul we are talking about.
It’s early. Give her the time from now to the beginning of the primary in early 2011 and it will be diffent.

And why is a guy like T-Paw at WCPAC? He’s a moderate.
Sapwolf on October 17, 2009 at 5:19 PM

I’ve done it. Sarah is still head and shoulders over any of the others in terms of being able and positioned to defeat Obama in 2012. Will that hold up til Nov. 2012, who knows?
Right now, she is the best horse in the race.

Sarah is very competitive, and she thinks like a point guard.
By resigning and taking the fight to the national level to confront Obama, Sarah did…
THIS
She totally surprised and outflanked Axelrod and sent them into a panic. She then followed it up with the ‘death panels’ post on healthcare and put them on the defensive.
And now, what are O’s ratings?
She’s a warrior. I wouldn’t be surprised if her Korean-era Dad discussed this with her over a paper napkin and a pencil.
When somebody asks her why she ‘quit’, she will say:
I didn’t quit but had to take the fight to the national level to stop the growing federal government.
Sapwolf on October 17, 2009 at 5:57 PM

Jenfidel on October 17, 2009 at 8:20 PM
Actually, they would like nothing more than for Sarah to run. Obama would win in a landslide. Worse, the country would suffer for that. By the time 2012 comes Obama will have twice the executive experience Palin has, which was one of the few things she had on any of the nominees last year. She quit her job and blew the opportunity to show how she is a great leader.
The polling numbers don’t support your claim about her massive appeal.
Bradky on October 17, 2009 at 8:23 PM
All of it showing NObama to be an abysmal leader and president!
“Executive experience” alone won’t win it for him alone in 2012; worse yet, he’ll have to run on his record.
Jenfidel on October 17, 2009 at 8:25 PM
Rick Moran, Patterico, AP and Ed are great examples of how to examine issues. All make good points that should cause people to think.
I recommend you get your eyes checked – I know I’m not blind.
Bradky on October 17, 2009 at 8:26 PM
and Palin has a record to run on? Please… in 12 more months her resume will be even thinner than Obama’s.
Put a legitimate nominee on the GOP ticket and Obama can be beaten. Palin is not the heavyweight her most ardent supporters believe her to be. If it were true her polling numbers should be much better.

Jenfidel on October 17, 2009 at 8:31 PM
Yes, Palin has an extremely strong record to run on.
Indeed, she will have about the same kind of record, accomplishments and strength that Reagan, Clinton and Bush 43 did when they ran successfully for President.
Jenfidel on October 17, 2009 at 8:33 PM
The day that I change my mind that Obama and his war room and the MSM do not consider Sarah Palin as the most dangerous to Obama’s re-election in 2012 is when:
1)The MSM does a “60 minute” expose on Huckabee’s record as governor of Arkansas
2)That one of Huckabee’s son’s former girl friends is made an offer by Playboy to appear naked and in turn spill the beans of Huck
3)That Huck’s TV appearances are analyzed and dissected by Leftist pundits for every mistake he has made
4)That the MSM makes fun of his former weight problems
5)That he is referred to as Elmer Gantry by the MSM

They weren’t harassed to the tune of half a million on a Governor’s salary and five children. I think quitting damages Palin in the short term, though I think she is competent and trustworthy. It just leaves voters uneasy whether she can handle the pressure of national scrutiny. But a primary and the time between now and then could benefit her. If any politician can run a strong campaign against Obama, it’s Palin.

If that were true, then Sarah Palin would not have been invited to speak at a French firm’s address to Asian investors. She was paid a handsome six figure speaker’s fee for that, so that throw’s out any notion that this was some joke.
If Sarah Palin were irrelevant, nobody would care what she wrote on Facebook. If she were as stupid as you claim, or a LOSER, the death panels argument would have been widely ridiculed. It was, however, only marginally ridiculed by the White House and their sycophants.
The fact remains that as hard as you try to stick the QUITTER and LOSER label to her and count her out of politics, she is a compelling figure, a political star with sharp instincts, the consummate outsider’s outsider and a frontrunner in the 2012 primaries depending on her performance between now and then. :)

Let’s face it, Sarah Palin doesn’t have what most American’s look for in a candidate. She doesn’t lie, she doesn’t support dictators, she doesn’t promise to give free money to people who don’t make an effort to work for it, she doesn’t want to tell you what you can and cannot drive, where to live, how to live, what to eat and not eat, and most importantly she doesn’t denigrate our military and security people. She only has common sense to offer Americans and since that is no longer taught in our schools or universities, it’s no wonder she is not understood or appreciated. She simply lacks the ability to pander to peoples fantasies. Self reliance, hard work, and OLD FASHIONED PATRIOTISM are no longer popular with the masses.

Oh I see . . . it’s jealousy. Wow. Suddenly the blinds have been lifted.

Resigning her office is the reason for her slipping in the polls is the most BS reason ever thought up by anybody. No one has taken the extreme amount of shots by both conservative and liberal opponents. My question is why are her detractors fixated on her? Liberals are afraid of her popularity and conservatives are the elite and people who think the elite know what they are talking about and too stupid to see greatness when it is staring back at them…………..GO SARAH!

Wrong again. I was highlighting your immaturity not your envy.

Because she has proven herself not be the brightest bulb in the chandelier. I like her, but she doesn’t have what it takes.

It’s a contrast, but a meaningless one.
It says what, exactly?
Had Palin not been chosen as McCain’s VP, she most certainly would have gone on to re-election and a 2nd, equally successful term as governor.

And how has she done this, exactly?
And what is your definition of “brightest bulb?”
Again, what do you define as “what it takes?”
And to do what, precisely?
You’re not going to get away with those couple of throwaway remarks on here….well, not and be taken seriously.

What does this mean???
And if you look at Palin’s record and history, she hasn’t been a loser, for the most part.
Palin and McCain didn’t lose by much (4% of the popular vote) and many think that’s because of Sarah, that McCain was seriously losing before he put her on the ticket.
Thousands of folks turned out to her rallies and continue to show up anywhere she appears.
She has almost 1 million fans on Facebook.
Her new book has certainly sold over 2 million copies.
When she posts her position on the issues on Facebook, even Barack pays attention (ex: “death panels”).

OK.OK. We get it! Allah and Ed don’t like Sarah. Ya’ll better start pushing somebody other than Romney or Huck, though. Those two are damaged goods and no better than McCain on most of the issues. I don’t care what the snobs say about Sarah, I believe she holds more conservative views than Huck, Romney and Pawlenty – COMBINED!
Sporty1946 on October 19, 2009 at 8:46 AM
The Republican party seems committed to losers. Let’s have some “taxing” cheers for Huck or some “healthy” cheers for Mitt. Huck, Mitt, Bush I, Bush II. Oh, forgot Dole.

They’re redoubling their efforts and ratcheting up the attacks. The headlines are ridiculous: “Both Romney and Huckabee crushing Palin in head-on polls”. Dumb. So dumb there is nothing more to say on the matter.
