Comment log-in issues fixed
posted at 7:00 pm on October 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Over the last couple of days since our upgrade to WordPress 2.8.4, we have received a number of e-mails telling us about problems with the log-in sequence. Usually, this happens because upgrades require new cookies, so we advise people to clear their browser cache and log in fresh. This time, though, we appeared to have more than one problem, and our crack technical team has worked hard to resolve it. We have been told that the problem has been fixed and people should be able to log out and back into Hot Air normally. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

And I thought I was banned because I was critical of Palin or something…..

It has never done that before and is not doing it now! It shows silvernana on preview.

And here I thought I had been scratched from the Christmas card list.

With FireFox you can kill only the WordPress related cookies. Then refresh the page. And finally re-login.
The trick for editing cookies is go to the tools menu. Select options. Select “remove individual cookes”. Then use the usual tricks to find WordPress cookies and delete them.
I used this nuclear option when I could neither logout or post messages.

Yeah, due to the massive number of registered users for this site, it’s not economical to cache pages for each logged-in user. So we cache two versions: one for visitors, and one for logged-in users. That required that the log out link be generic and not user-specific. WordPress got more strict about requiring a user-specific log out link in recent versions.
Now! Thanks.

Now, Ed needs to call Mitch Berg and tell him what to do to fix it over at shotinthedark.

Wow, thought maybe I’d posted some profanity and could not recall. Guess the Obamoid hasn’t pushed me that far yet.

No, critical of Palin would get you thrown off if it was my site, but the people in charge here don’t seem to like her either.

Thanks Mark. I thought it odd that I could be logged in and have a comment box, but be prevented from commenting at all.
Removing the cookie did resolve the issue, until the next comment, which was the next day, and I thought it might be a daily cookie expiring, but not getting cleared.
Good to know that this was a generic issue.

It seems to be working fine now, thanks.

Now when are we going to have a common list for Michelle’s site and hot air?
On second thought, never mind. Trolls could move too freely.

{tap} {tap} {tap} Is this thing on? Good, it’s the only thing – my Cornhuskers surely aren’t on today.

I was about to just swear off HA for good. I have login problems periodically and I’ve never been able to get logged back in without waiting a day, and I’m in tech support.

Oh no… I hear the “Congratulations, you won” add on this site now for the first time. Hopefully, this wasn’t part of the upgrade. Time for an adware check again.
