Limbaugh tells all: Was George Soros involved in the Rams bid too?
posted at 2:44 pm on October 15, 2009 by Allahpundit
For your listening pleasure, courtesy of the Right Scoop, the first 15 minutes of today’s show. If you can’t spare the time, watch the last three minutes of the second clip for his big finish about Saul Alinsky’s America and then two minutes of the first clip starting at around 2:45 for the bombshell about his very strange bedfellow in the bid. Rush says he knew nothing about it until yesterday and even now seems unsure that Soros is definitely involved. I googled around to see where the story started and kept coming back to this Bloomberg piece, which … doesn’t say much:
Limbaugh’s group is led by former Madison Square Garden President and current St. Louis Blues and Real Salt Lake majority owner Dave Checketts, who brings a wealth of sports industry contacts, know-how and credibility. Checketts also brings big-time backers like George Soros, who financed the duo’s failed attempt to buy the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2003.
Checketts’s ownership of hockey’s Blues is backed by, among others, TowerBrook Capital Partners, which was formerly known as Soros Private Equity Partners before it was spun off from Soros Asset Management Group in 2005.
Much depends on what “brings” means. Is Bloomberg merely saying that Soros has partnered with Checketts before and therefore might be involved this time or are they saying he is involved and they know it for a fact? Hard to tell. If it’s the latter then it’s exceedingly odd that Checketts never mentioned it to Rush in order to feel him out on whether he was okay with partnering with Soros. It’s also odd that Soros wouldn’t have used his influence on the left to call off the media dogs this week against Limbaugh: Now that they’ve purged Rush, conservatives will demand that Soros be purged too and Georgie boy surely knows it. Which is why I suspect that he’s not involved in the bid (and, needless to say, won’t be involved going forward).
Limbaugh goes out of his way in the second clip to say he’ll remain a huge fan of the NFL, so if you’re thinking about a boycott, it sounds like you’re on your own. Exit question: Why did Checketts assure him that he was prepared for the media firestorm when he obviously wasn’t? Maybe he thought at the time that Soros was coming aboard and that the two would “balance” each other for left/right media purposes?

Sorry, but Limbaugh’s ouster from the bid for the Rams is because he’s seen by other NFL owners as too controversial for the image of the league.

In fairness to Checketts, he probably didn’t think the left would resort to making up quotes and attributing them to Rush. Sure the blogosphere would sink that low, but I and many others figured CNN and MSNBC at least wanted to maintain the illusion that they’re reputable news sources.

Checketts is going to regret this. He comes across as either sounding like a giant weenie or back-stabber. Putz.

Like Rush said, it’s interesting that the other two bidding groups have remained anonymous. Goldman Sachs is the banker handling the sale. You would have to look far and wide for a company more represented in the current administration. It’s interesting.
Cindy Munford on October 15, 2009 at 2:52 PM
I’ll give the benefit of the doubt and say it’s because Checketts doesn’t have to deal with openly racist people in the media every day. He probably thinks Sharpton and Jackson really do speak for black folks and doesn’t know they are media whores who, in turn, whore the media.
No matter what, it’s the NFL that’s going to pay the price because DeMaurice is going to use the race card every time. I dare say Rush is better off this way. As he said, he lost nothing (money-wise), and the coming contract negotiations are going to get mighty interesting.

I keep coming back to the fact that this makes sense – but perhaps means nothing.
Conservatives can demand anything we want, in any situation we want – to what end? Who, in what position of power, would respond to these conservative demands to purge Soros and actually do it?
I have no doubt some stink would be raised, but that these ‘demands to purge Soros’ would be laughed at and dismissed out of hand.
After all, Soros is no racist – Rush is the racist, right? (I don’t mean/believe that, but that’s undoubtedly the response you’d get).

Yet Michael Vick isn’t? Wow! He’s such a great role model for kids. THUD!!!
There’s a piece on American Thinker, prosing the question…was this a set up? It’s no secret Obama, and his ilk want Rush destroyed. Who was the first person they villified after the election?

I think he has to sue for his listeners. I know this rolls off his back, but by calling him a racist they are calling me a racist because I listen to him. He should sue on behalf of every conservative. This isn’t about the NFL. This fight is bigger than that. Lets use this to end the liberals ability to play the race card.

If I were the majority of the other NFL owners, I’d be more worried about Soros than I was about Limbaugh, and not because of politics.
The NFL labor contract is coming up for renewal, and owners like Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder are pushing as hard as they can to eliminate the revenue sharing aspect of the NFL owners’ agreement, which has been in place since 1961. The agreement prevented the NFL from becoming like Major League Baseball, where a few rich/big market teams like the Yankees and the Red Sox donimate the playoff qualifiers year after year by buying up the best free agent talent. That’s what Jerry and Dan want for football, where the deep pocket teams would lord over the smaller market/smaller fanbase ones.
St. Louis normally wouldn’t be considered a large market, but Soros definitely has deep pockets, and as currency traders and national banks in England and the Far East can attest, this isn’t a guy who uses his money to play by the rules, or to listen to others. For a league where a majority of owners don’t want the Super Bowl to end up dominated year in and year out by eight or so of the 32 teams, that’s not a guy you want to add to your club unless your sure the rules are in place to make sure he doesn’t try to fix the game and boost his franchise’s net worth.

One thing to contemplate, everyone knew Rush tried to buy an interest in the Steelers about a year ago when they were ordered to divide up. So it was no big secret that Rush was interested in purchasing a part of an NFL team. Logic would dictate that when the Rams possibility rolled around that it would be a natural for him to attempt a purchase once again. Especially the Rams!
Now without sounding like a tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theorists; why would it not follow that Soros would be involved in this with Checketts only to know that he, Soros, would later sick the racial baiting scum on Rush to harm him? We all know Rush has long been a target of the Obama nuts so why not use this as a ploy to sucker Rush in only to shoot him down? I am not saying Checketts knew Soros would do this, but in my mind and my knowledge of Soros; this dude is beyond evil and calculating.
And by the way if the NFL is 70% Black, then why is it only 9 players came forward to run their stupid mouths about things Rush never said? I find it very politically slanted that the Players Union Rep is a big Obama supporter. Hmmm, does this resemble all the racial bilge spewed during the One’s campaign? I think so!
So put me down in the column of those believing Soros was involved. If not Soros the Statist at Goldman Sachs definitely knew how to play this via orders from their overlords in the White House. Rahmbo Emanuel anyone?

Then where’s he been, living under a rock? Where was he during the whole ESPN flap when the Left had a field day smearing him with all sorts of racist comments about Donnovan McNabb when all Rush said was that the media was desperate for a black QB to succeed? McNabb’s talent as a QB aside (I, personally, think he’s overrated, but I also think Ben Rothlesburger is overrated), it was a commentary on the media and not McNabb as a QB – black or otherwise. The Left twisted it into being a racist attack on McNabb. If Checketts didn’t know this was going to happen, then he’s either dumb or hasn’t been paying attention.

My problem here is the media reaction. It’s crossing a major line to pass on unsourced, unverified ‘quotes’ as fact. It’s also shameful to not retract when it’s proven you’re in the wrong. MSNBC cited James Farrior, a Steelers linebacker, as their source for the quotes. They knew the quotes were bogus and ran them anyway. It’s a bad place to be when people can get away with that.

Weak weak weak response from Limbaugh.
Not ONE NFL rep or owner came to his defense. Every one of them from Goodell on down threw him under the bus. And Rush is just lying down and taking it? Saying he’s going to be the biggest non-paid promoter of the sport? Huh?
I appreciate the class and tolerance his opponents are incapable of ever displaying, but if there was ever a time to let loose, this would be it.
Goodell et al accepted the premise, that premise precisely being that he is a racist. Either they are moral cowards for not defending him, or they actually believe it. Either way, it’s reprehensible and I’m disappointed Rush had nothing to say on that, and instead makes it about…an impending collective bargaining agreement?

This has been kabuki theater.
As evidenced by Ed’s posting from the Hill yesterday, the Dems believe they are going down in 2010 unless they get black folks riled up enough to turn out. Rush is the obvious lightening rod to do so.
So Soros approaches Checketts; and assuming Soros’ involvement will balance Limbaugh’s, they feel comfortable in approaching Rush as well.
What Checketts didn’t realize though, was that the whole episode was just a ruse to get a bunch of outraged African American pundits in front of TV cameras, attributing a bevy of completely fabricated racial slurs to that evil Republican, Rush Limbaugh!
