Insane Japanese game shows: It’s come to this

posted at 10:00 pm on October 15, 2009 by Allahpundit

Alternate headline: “Japan’s status confirmed as world capital of WTF.” Do yourself a favor and don’t read the news story until after you’ve watched the clip. All you need to know is that this is a game show. The name isn’t important, nor is understanding so much as a word of Japanese. All shall be clear soon enough. Again: This is a game show.

If they aired this crap in the U.S., would anyone watch anything else?

The Trial Lawyers Association of America may want to have the show here but that’s about it.

Geez….that’s just cruel

BadgerHawk on October 15, 2009 at 10:12 PM

I don’t see how this is hilarious, but Japan has different sensibilities I guess.

“24″ is huge in Japan. And I love the show too. But…wow. This is so wrong.

cubachi on October 15, 2009 at 10:12 PM

The question is: after a show or two, who the HElL goes on a show like this??

bikermailman on October 15, 2009 at 10:13 PM

Does this prove mock executions aren’t torture… Or that they are?

Free Constitution on October 15, 2009 at 10:13 PM

The guy they pranked, Katou, is pretty famous for his face gag. Comedians in Japan are pretty huge.

The big laugh line at the end was all about the cop demanding answers from Katou and Katou saying “Now’s not the time!!”

Hierarchical society or group-oriented societies: “I’m nobody, so I don’t mind laughing at you when you are shown to be nobody.” To laugh gracefully when you are humiliated is just a necessary survival skill there–because the other guys laughing at you also know they aren’t getting a leg up in status from your humiliation. In Japan, the nail standing up is the one that gets hammered.

It’s why the art of showing grace when someone imposes upon you has a name in Japan.

Or so it all seems to me.

DarkeningCloud on October 15, 2009 at 10:13 PM

I think the TV guy in south America, who had people killed for his show, out does the Japanese.

BL@KBIRD on October 15, 2009 at 10:14 PM

The highlights of this year on television pour moi have been Season 2 of Breaking Bad (Congrats, Bryan Cranston!) and Season 2 of I Survived a Japanese Game Show. It didn’t matter how screwed up the world was on Wednesday nights, I could look forward to laughing myself sore watching Rome Kanda, Judge Bob, and some fun Americans up for anything in a quest for $100,000.

This prank, however, is just nuts. It reminds me of that dumb movie The Game with Michael Douglas & Sean Penn. I can’t believe anybody liked that movie with its preposterous “twist” ending.

L.N. Smithee on October 15, 2009 at 10:14 PM

That prank could only have been done in Japan or some other country where guns are banned for private ownership.

Do that in Texas – and you may be trying to punk a redneck who’s packing.

HondaV65 on October 15, 2009 at 10:26 PM

I’m waiting for when they used condemned prisoners for the real thing. How far off are we from that?
We think we’ve come so far over the last few thousand years but we’re really no different than any other people. The barbarian is always there inside of us. We just have higher tech.

Just not sure what’s outrageous about this.

They do this kind of crap on Punk’d all the time.

By the way, most people would laugh this off without freaking out about it – it’s called “saving face.”

amkun on October 15, 2009 at 10:28 PM

Completely fake. The fear is fake. The guy was acting.

Allahpundit, there must be a real story out there somewhere the half day you post. Back in the days when I myself was an atheist, I believed the sun was shining somewhere on the planet. Maybe the neo-atheist believes if it gets dark here, then in Japan they are also eating dinner and firing up the television for the evening… I just don’t know…

Damn it man, find a meat and potatoes news story, and not once of your typical “Christians are dumb” posts either! (this coming from a vegetarian Christian)

Danzo on October 15, 2009 at 10:28 PM

It’s a tossup which is worse: the Japanese clip, or the “Obama Backs Insurance Regulation” ad at the bottom of AP’s post.

MrScribbler on October 15, 2009 at 10:28 PM

It’s not so much a gameshow in the way we understand the concept. First of all, Japanese people have these crazy shows where instead of rewarding people for achievement, they punish them for mistakes (like the Simpsons said). They call these, appropriately enough, ばつ games (“punishment games”). Usually they features celebrities. Japan has a lot of shows where they do stuff like this – like Punked, but worse.

In this particular show, they are playing a prank on three famous comedians. So it isn’t really a gameshow as we know it.

RightWinged on October 15, 2009 at 11:05 PM

Not the craziest thing I’ve ever seen on a Japanese game show, but it does rank right up there.

I remember seeing a show a number of years ago where they busted into some poor sap’s house in the middle of the night, literally dragged him out of bed, put him on an airplane and flew him to Capetown, South Africa…and then told him he had to walk to Europe. With a guy who only spoke Chinese.

Meh, I prefer bukkake.

Yawn!

I was stationed in Japan for quite a few years in the early to mid 80s and though I don’t speak a lick of Japanese, I (and my shipmates) always found Japanese TV highly entertaining in a horrifyingly funny sort of way. This kind of humiliation and “scare the crap out of ‘em” stuff happens routinely on these shows.
