HuffPo, Rick Sanchez retract phony Limbaugh quotes

posted at 9:28 pm on October 15, 2009 by Allahpundit

No harm in admitting the lie now that his NFL bid’s dead. First, via the Standard, comes this belated HuffPo postscript to a post that’s three years old:

Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this post contained quotes attributed to Rush Limbaugh, which Limbaugh has since denied making. As is our policy when a fact in a blog post is called into question, we gave its author 24 hours to substantiate the quote. Since he has not been able to do so, the quotes have been deleted from the post.

And now here’s Sanchez, kinda sorta apologizing — on Twitter — for airing the bogus slavery quote on his show earlier this week:

i’ve know rush. in person,i like him. his rhetoric, however is inexcusably divisive. he’s right tho. we didn’t confirm quote. our bad.

Proof that Limbaugh’s threat to sue people over this is being taken seriously? Eh, I doubt it. As I said before, it’s really hard for a public figure to prove defamation. He’d basically have to show that his accusers knew the quote was false and published it anyway; both HuffPo and Sanchez would reply that they didn’t know and were merely lazy, sloppy, negligent reporters in relying on published sources for a quote that they hadn’t fact-checked. The retractions, I suspect, are motivated less by fear of being sued than as a lame nod to journalistic ethics. “See, we correct our highly incendiary errors. …Eventually.”

Meanwhile, it’s safe to say that the Journal’s solved the mystery of why Olbermann, of all people, came to Rush’s defense a few days ago:

What happened here, and is happening elsewhere in American life, is that Mr. Limbaugh’s outspoken political conservatism is being deemed sufficient reason to ostracize him from polite society. By contrast, MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann, who fires off his own brand of high-velocity, left-wing political commentary but lacks Mr. Limbaugh’s sense of humor, appears weekly as co-host of NBC’s “Football Night in America.” We haven’t heard anyone on the right say Mr. Olbermann’s nightly ad-hominem rants should disqualify him from hanging around the NFL. Al Franken made it all the way to the U.S. Senate on a river of political vitriol…

It is no secret that this country’s politics has become intense across the ideological spectrum. Rush Limbaugh lets his listeners blow off steam and then get on with the rest of their day. But if the people who claim to worry about such things want to see a truly angry right develop in this country, they should continue to remain silent while the left tries to drive Rush Limbaugh and others out of American political life. If that happens, the NFL by comparison will look like an afternoon tea.

You would be hearing complaints about Olby now if he’d joined the chorus against Limbaugh, but Kayo was one step ahead of the game this time. Is Soros?

Yeah, but Ace considers his blog to be more of a hangout for him and his friends than anything else, I think. He calls it ‘our place’. HotAir has a different reputation it needs to maintain, partly because its owner is regularly booked on national tv shows and is a best selling author. Allowing your commenters to get into blog wars isn’t really conducive to that.

Ace’s commenters posted hundreds of absolutely awful and equally hilarious things about CJ yesterday, and he won’t touch them, because they don’t care, and CJ knows it.

If Rush comes forth as a plaintiff the burden of proof is his. If he can show, with reasonable probability that wikipedia ?!?! was the source for these “journalist” smears? Case closed. Rush wins.

No compromise. Take it to a jury and plead for a judgment against the perpetrators of this libel and slander, their enablers, employers, funders, agents, heirs and assigns, and on top of that, demand punitive damages. More cake: Bring in Sharpton and that other clown, Jesse Jackson. He can single handedly deplete their riches and donate all to charity. Sweet!

Flag the stories over the past week, and remember who used the quotes and then apologized, because the odds are if another Limbaugh controversy comes up a couple of years from now, the same people, the same websites and the same news channels will be trotting out the same bogus quotes, as if today’s retractions never happened.

As we all know.
Liberals don’t care whether they have to lie, steal, cheat,or commit any kind of corrupt action to push their agenda.

The “ends” justifies the “means”.

They feel that they are so righteous in their ways that any lie or act of malice they commit is okay because it furthers their faux superior ideology.

Liberals know that the Micheal Moore’s and Keith Olberman’s are pompous,self-righteous liars and propagandist but it does not matter, they help demonize their opponents which helps them win elections.

They push the entertainment industry like SNL,sitcoms, and movies to humiliate their political opponents and set up shows that portray conservative policies and leaders as evil, criminal bigots that only care about money and power.

They know that this is so important to their success that they had a hissy fit and fact checked an SNL skit to lessen the blow that it might inflict on making Obama look weak and inept.

Could you imagine the air time that would have been used up exposing all the lies and distortions of Moore’s 9/11 movie.

Instead they called it a “documentary” and gave him an oscar.

Bashing Bush and the Iraq war pretty much became a prerequisite of winning an emmy or an oscar over the last few years.

The liberal leaders on the Hill continually make slanderous accusations against their opponents combined with blatantly false statments concerning their legislation that they depend on the MSM to push and cover for them.

Obama’s lies being exposed by Republicans concerning his health care bill contributing to the deficit, dropping legislation concerning the “death panals”(Palin exposed that) and “coverage for illegals (Wilson’s “liar” exposed that) are just some of the examples of how liberals operate and depend on the press to cover for them.

We know many liberals are jumping for joy concerning the fact that they used lies and smears to deliver a hit to Rush.
But remember, these are also the same people who danced for victory on the graves of 3 million people slaughtered when we left Vietnam “giving peace a chance” and fought like he!! to defend Saddam Hussein and allow genocide in Iraq just so they could further their liberal agenda.

How progressive!!!!!!!!

Haven’t read all the comments, and this point has probably already been made. But of course they knew it was false. Had he made those statements, we all know Media Matters would have immediately circulated the tapes. NBC, ABC, and CBS would have led their nightly broadcasts with the story, and MSNBC and CNN would still be milking it. There’s no way it would have escaped notice.

He should sue. If nothing else, it would be highly entertaining to have hacks like Sanchez effectively admit on the record that they work for networks that don’t care if their “reporters” actually fact check their stories.

Really? You found a Wikiquote in which “Rush” condemns interracial marriages? Wow!

ddrintn on October 15, 2009 at 11:58 PM

A final observation, perhaps too obvious to require saying: It’s no coincidence that Democratic Party outlets like CNN had to dredge up fake quotes to make their case. Nothing Rush actually said would do the trick, even though he’s been on the radio three hours a day, five days a week, for more than twenty years. That really tells you all you need to know.

ONE LAST UPDATE: It is worth noting, as a kind of macabre footnote, that CNN found it worthwhile to “fact check” Saturday Night Live when that program had the temerity to ridicule CNN’s President, The One. Maybe CNN could become a respected news organization if it tried to fact check news stories as well as comedy skits, starting with–is this too much to ask?–its own broadcasts.

Blake on October 16, 2009 at 12:08 AM

Well: as I wrote last night, it is ironic that Keith Olbermann, who, unlike Rush, is actually a hatemonger, is a network commentator on NFL games. Apparently no one thinks Olbermann is too “divisive” to be associated with the league.

Which raises this thought: has any liberal ever been labeled “divisive”? I can’t recall a single instance. President Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are trying to dismantle our health care system, an effort to which most Americans object and about which many millions care deeply. So, why are they not divisive? If that isn’t divisive, what is?

These thoughts are prompted by Olbermann’s latest outrage: another attack on Michelle Malkin, in which he accused Michelle of being a “fascist” and described her as “a big mashed-up bag of meat with lipstick on it.” It is impossible to imagine a conservative with a network television contract using language like that about a liberal woman. Impossible. It is, to begin with, misogynistic; it’s also aesthetically ridiculous. Agree with her or not, Michelle is a beautiful woman. One can only wonder what kind of twisted, sick psyche could produce this sort of venom. (Michelle writes about Olbermann’s bizarre outburst here.)

But let’s apply a much lower threshold: by what conceivable standard is Keith Olbermann not a divisive figure? It would be impossible to be more intensely partisan or to be more vicious toward those with whom he disagrees. How can that not be considered divisive, by the NFL’s standards?

The only answer is that “divisive” is a criticism that applies only to conservatives. It is not possible for a liberal to be “divisive,” however crazed he or she may be. This is true even though the whole point of a political system is to decide issues about which people disagree. If people don’t disagree, it isn’t a political issue. So to argue for any political point of view is necessarily divisive. But divisiveness is a one-way street. When liberals express liberal views, that’s just being a patriotic American. When conservatives express conservative views, it’s “divisive.”

That is, sadly, how much of our country’s establishment thinks

Rick Sanchez, you are a sniveling coward who isn’t man enought to back your dishonest assertions face to face with those you slander. You are a lying maggot. I say this to your face you worthless piece of dung. Go back to Cuba where bull$h1tt1ng Marxist slime like you seem to flourish.

One by one I hope Rush takes them all apart starting with hit and run Sanchez. Problem is Rush does it and they
aren’t bright enough to know it . So Sue them all Rush.

Yes, Blake I do have a lot of nerve. You stalking me is kind of creepy though.

DeathtotheSwiss on October 16, 2009 at 12:14 AM

The only attention some losers can get is by trying to quote Hot Air comments and hope someone notices.

Yaaaaaaawwwwwwwnnnnnn.

profitsbeard on October 16, 2009 at 12:14 AM

o ya think they’d take an oops lightly? There needs to be some protection from journalist who just go out and lie, i mean it can’t be like England’s sue everything approach, but really just saying “My Bad” doesn’t fix whats done.

Rbastid on October 15, 2009 at 11:29 PM

Actually, the US system of justice is a derivative of English Common Law.

From a defense perspective, “My Bad” is not a valid defense. Consider this: “Yeah, I kilt somebody… my bad”.

Key West Reader on October 15, 2009 at 11:38 PM

Your honor he needed to be kilt….

Once more, that number for NFL offices is 216-450-2000.8:30am to 7pm eastern time to demand that the NFL put pressure on NBC to remove one of the most divisive figures in broadcasting, Kieth Olbermann, from NBC’s Sunday Night game.

Dr. Carlo Lombardi on October 16, 2009 at 12:18 AM

Given the likelihood that Limbaugh will sue over this, I find it interesting that the source of these bogus quotes is probably a lawyer…

Drained Brain on October 15, 2009 at 10:23 PM

Disbarment, anyone?

Jaibones on October 15, 2009 at 11:41 PM

I vote dismemberment.

huckelberry on October 16, 2009 at 12:19 AM

Why, I saw that quoted on the internet–I KNOW it must be true! (In fact it was here on HA last night, but damned if I know where…)

lovingmyUSA on October 15, 2009 at 11:18 PM

Ha!

Blake on October 16, 2009 at 12:22 AM

Allah,

Learn form the libs. They do not care if they win the lawsuit. They want to make it so expensive to FIGHt the lawsuit that most people will go out of their way to aviod the lawsuit in the first place thereby giving the libs a win without the need to actually win the case. The environmental lawsuits come to mind.

Rush has an opertunity to nail CNN and huff to the cross on this and cost them millions upon millions in legal fees. It is the only way this will not happen again. You drive them to court you bleed them dry of money and then you sue them again and again until they learn their lesson.

unseen on October 16, 2009 at 12:24 AM

Yes, Blake I do have a lot of nerve. You stalking me is kind of creepy though.

DeathtotheSwiss on October 16, 2009 at 12:14 AM

How very CJ smeary of you. He taught you well. If you think I’m really stalking you, as opposed to you trying to smear me, it’s a crime. Call the police. Report me. HA can give the cops all my contact information. Put your money where your fat lying mouth is.

Blake on October 16, 2009 at 12:28 AM

hmmm does the NFL have a policy where hiring and firing can not be based on a person’s creed?

And is not a politcal belief a creed?

So can not rush sue ongrounds of discrimnation?

unseen on October 16, 2009 at 12:29 AM

unseen on October 16, 2009 at 12:30 AM

So, the fact that he is a lying creep and smear artist and thinks anybody who disagrees with him is a racist was okay so long as he was nice to you?

-Blake

The thing is, he’s either a “lying creep” or someone who thinks everyone who disagrees with him is a racist. Probably not both.

I just think he’s wrong and is pushing his own agenda. At the moment Charles blog displays a left of center bias, not extreme left but, left none the less. When I wrote that he was a moderate conservative, in my viewpoint, he was one. lgfwatchwatch is a now defunct watchdog site for the stalker/ultra-left hate-site lgfwatch. I do not “showcase” Charles’ war against HA, the blog simply shows whenever either this website or LGF make a new post. LGF and HA are no longer affiliated and so this has produced some quite odd results.

I don’t believe Charles is a liar, just somewhat over-sensitive and perhaps a little bitter. As for his lizards, they seem to have come down with an awful case of schadenfreude. It’s as hostile in those threads towards even mild conservatives now as it was towards jihad-defenders in the early 2000s.

So Blake, banned LGF lizard, please don’t take out your anger on me. It’s simply out of context.

DeathtotheSwiss on October 16, 2009 at 12:32 AM

He should still sue.

Tim Burton on October 16, 2009 at 12:38 AM

I didn’t hear any indication from Rush today that he’s planning on suing anyone. (And maybe that’s because of the Sullivan standard. Too difficult to prove malice.) But I hope he will get back at these pieces of excrement, somehow. He really just can’t let this stand. I can’t wait to see what he’s going to do.

chris999 on October 16, 2009 at 12:39 AM

I just heard that the national Republican party is backing some liberal woman for an open seat in NY state. She supports card check and she’s endorsed by acorn. How arrogant and stupid this party is.

chris999 on October 16, 2009 at 12:41 AM

Jeff, what are you guys going to do with that sillycrazy diequickly congressman?

Just curious.

Key West Reader on October 15, 2009 at 11:42 PM

Actually, he is the more sane of the two that represent Orlando if you can believe it. Meet MY representative (that runs unopposed every year). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgbBP9Em00A

JeffinOrlando on October 16, 2009 at 12:43 AM

Nothing new under the sun insofar as rumor mills go. No different from how Jayson Blair played the New York Times. He merely made up things his editors wanted to believe were true. And those editors kept believing and believing and believing until Jayson Blair was shown to have made it all up.

The grapevine says the ISP originating the Limbaugh smear posted at Wiki originated at a New York law firm. Though I think he’s based in DC I’ve wondered what creepy Clintoon damage control pettifogger Vernon Jordan has been up to lately. Who knows?

viking01 on October 16, 2009 at 12:45 AM

The thing is, he’s either a “lying creep” or someone who thinks everyone who disagrees with him is a racist. Probably not both.

Yes,he can be both. You’re opinion is biased. The fact that you have been one of the mob over there tells me you have no judgement, no ethics, and no spine.

I just think he’s wrong and is pushing his own agenda. At the moment Charles blog displays a left of center bias, not extreme left but, left none the less. When I wrote that he was a moderate conservative, in my viewpoint, he was one.

B.S. You wrote that 4/24/09. He was no such thing and the purges had already long begun.

lgfwatchwatch is a now defunct watchdog site for the stalker/ultra-left hate-site lgfwatch.

No, you’re a stalker of anyone who disagrees with the racist hate site LGF. Ace had you people pegged: You’re like North Korea over there. The only thing that has changed is that you’ve been banned.

I do not “showcase” Charles’ war against HA, the blog simply shows whenever either this website or LGF make a new post. LGF and HA are no longer affiliated and so this has produced some quite odd results.

Liar. Since the attacks are coming fast and furious from the whackjob, then you do showcase his war on HA.

He’s a disgusting and blatant liar. You need to be deprogrammed. It’s hostile to anybody who expresses a different view no matter how slight. You were no better in that you tolerated it.

So Blake, banned LGF lizard, please don’t take out your anger on me. It’s simply out of context.

DeathtotheSwiss on October 16, 2009 at 12:32 AM

It’s not out of context at all. You crapped all over HA. You were part of the mob who crapped all over HA on the nutsite. And now you are here looking for sympathy.

Blake on October 16, 2009 at 12:47 AM

DeathtotheSwiss on October 16, 2009 at 12:32 AM

Oh, I’m not the banned one, you are. I stopped posting on that hate psycho site 3 or 4 years ago.

Blake on October 16, 2009 at 12:53 AM

Blake, you’re just trying too hard to get on the next HA Comments of the day thread. It’s embarrassing.

Now, I’m not going to argue with you point-by-point. Instead I’m going to say a few things and let you hash it out in your own head.

Lying implies knowingly providing false information. If you’re wrong and provide information based on your own ignorance it is not a lie.

I posted sporadically, even at the time when I created lgfwatchwatch. I still can’t get over the fact that you don’t think the name is at least funny.

There is a difference, however slight, between stalking and watchdogging. I am unable to see myself as a stalker, liar or programmed repeater. I have never “crapped” on HA nor do I understand why you would make an assertion without even the presumption of evidence.

A statement made about someone, especially a biased and emotional one, when not even given a rudimentary fact-check is tantamount to lying. I’m not a liar.

I could be dumb, ignorant or crazy. I’d like to be right.

After portraying all tea partiers and pro-lifers as racists who want to kill Obama, Sanchez has no room to talk about divisive rhetoric.

Blake, you’re just trying too hard to get on the next HA Comments of the day thread. It’s embarrassing.

No, you’re trying hard to get unbanned by the lying racist. You’re embarrassing.

Now, I’m not going to argue with you point-by-point. Instead I’m going to say a few things and let you hash it out in your own head.

You can’t. You have no arguments. Just your lame justifications for being an idiot. Hash that out in your head, you patronizing creep.

Lying implies knowingly providing false information. If you’re wrong and provide information based on your own ignorance it is not a lie.

Dumbass, just because you say you or others are not lying but ignorant, doesn’t make it so.

I posted sporadically, even at the time when I created lgfwatchwatch. I still can’t get over the fact that you don’t think the name is at least funny.

But there are enough posts of yours around the internet sliming others and defending your master’s creepy behavior. And, no, not funny, and not clever. You and others remind me of one of those creepy people Stalin sent out to eliminate all his critics.

There is a difference, however slight, between stalking and watchdogging. I am unable to see myself as a stalker, liar or programmed repeater. I have never “crapped” on HA nor do I understand why you would make an assertion without even the presumption of evidence.

Because it’s true. And when did you ever become concerned with proof for anything? All CJ does is make accusations without proof and you had no problems with it. You’re such a hypocrite.

A statement made about someone, especially a biased and emotional one, when not even given a rudimentary fact-check is tantamount to lying. I’m not a liar.

I could be dumb, ignorant or crazy. I’d like to be right.

Blake, no evidence? None? Okay, thought so.

I’m surprised that someone as severely unhinged as you couldn’t provide a scholarly rebuttal to my comments.

I have never hated on tea-parties, HA and I don’t want to go back to LGF (I didn’t know unban was even an option). I’d just get banned again if I was willing to deal with the environment.

You’re a truly hateful person. I am not a liar. You’d prove me wrong if you could. You can’t. I am not a liar.
