Buying seniors for $250 for ObamaCare
posted at 1:36 pm on October 15, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Barack Obama has a big problem with seniors after pushing his version of a health-care system overhaul all summer long, one that proposes massive cuts in Medicare funding to pay for new entitlements and subsidies. How can he best resolve that conundrum and get seniors on his side? Apparently, his answer is to toss $250 each to seniors as a means of cushioning the loss of the cost-of-living increase from Social Security, the first such COLA denial in 25 years:
There will be no cost of living increase for more than 50 million Social Security recipients next year, the first year without a raise since automatic adjustments were adopted in 1975.
Blame falling consumer prices. By law, cost of living adjustments are pegged to inflation, which is negative this year, the government said Thursday, because of lower energy costs. Social Security payments do not go down, even when prices drop.
The Obama administration, meanwhile, is pursuing a different way to boost recipients’ income. On Wednesday, President Barack Obama called for a second round of $250 stimulus payments for seniors, veterans, retired railroad workers and people with disabilities.
The payments would match the ones issued to seniors earlier this year as part of the government’s economic recovery package. The payments would be equal to about a 2 percent increase for the average Social Security recipient.
For the last two years, Obama the Candidate blasted the Bush administration for ad hoc spending that ignored the “pay-go” rules of the Clinton era. Does Obama follow his own advice here? Of course not. The White House doesn’t even bother to pretend that the $13 billion cost of the one-time payment will get matched by increased revenues or spending cuts elsewhere:
The White House put the cost of the payments at $13 billion. Obama didn’t say how the payments should be financed, leaving that up to Congress. The president is open to borrowing the money, increasing the federal budget deficit, just like Congress did with the first round of stimulus payments.
But even apart from the dishonesty of using the same ad hoc spending that Obama had blasted (which also applies to Obama’ stimulus spending), will this even work? Financially, all it does is make seniors “whole” for the loss of the COLA, although the lack of inflation in the past year means that they weren’t entitled to it in the first place. Like the stimulus package passed in early 2008 by the Democrats and signed by George Bush, the one-time check will do little to relieve long-term financial worries, in this case among those on fixed incomes.
The 2008 stimulus did nothing to prompt an economic recovery. There is no reason to expect that Obama will get a political recovery among seniors from a $13 billion one-time giveaway. It shows once again that Obama has no real commitment to fiscal discipline or deficit reduction, and instead wants to use Porkulus and the Treasury as a political piggy bank.

The wonderful thing about state and local governments is that when they run out of money, they really do have to stop, whether they like it or not. They can’t make any more. It significantly lessens the likelihood of bribes like this one.
It will really be good for us, ultimately, when foreign governments become less and less willing to lend to us. The public will only take so much inflation or taxation, even with bribes.

Hmmm. That only works for your voters, obooba.

Now who here has had a 3.8% increase in wages this year? Okay, let me rephrase that; who here not in a government job has had a 3.8% increase in wages this year?
That is what the $500 spread between Porkulus the First and this fresh payoff to seniors represents – a 3.8% increase in the average $13,128 Social Security recipient.
As for how it’s going to be paid for, I give equal odds to a $13 billion tax increase on those who work and borrowing (or at least attempting to borrow) from the Red Chinese, with some covering action on $13 billion being stripped from the

SS went up 5.6% last year. Take 0% this year and it still average 2.8% a year for the two years. What’s so bad about that? The typical raise workers get is 3% a year.
Seniors, you’re the ones that voted for 40 years of suicidal economic policies. You’re the ones who didn’t think twice about borrowing trillions of dollars with no regard to who it would be paid back. And now that we’re out of money that was spent on YOU you bitch and whine that you aren’t getting a 5% bump?

Even thought there is no COLA this year for SS recipients, there is a scheduled increase in Part D of Medicare. The one for prescription drugs. $250 might just cover the difference, leaving seniors exactly where they started the year at.

Whats really bad is that they use the CPI (Consumer Price Index) for this…
CPI is based on 1400 “representative” families, who tell a bunch of accountants what they pay each month for everything…
Most of the CPI has really increased this year… the only parts which decreased where transporation (due to no one buying cars), and Housing (due to the housing crises).
Most Seniors already have their houses… so that part for them did not change… and have or don’t need cars…
Sooo… the things they do buy, food, cloathes, energy (some up, some down), HAS increased… but thoses costs are masked by the decrease in the CPI by things they don’t use (or whose prices, for them, did not change).
Whole system is flawed… they really need a CPI based on what SENIORS spend, to base this upon.

As a 62 year old, this is the way I look at it; The government is going to take $300 to $350 away from me, so that they can give $250 back to me and somebody who didn’t work to earn it. I would rather they simply butted out and left me alone!
Kind of reminds me of the kind of service that Bernie Madoff provided.

Great idea! Screw the elderly and cut back on services from Medicare that they’ve contributed to since its inception and toss them a $250 bone. That will appease them. Obama looks after the elderly with about as much concern as he has for gays. And how does he toss the $250 bone? Borrow, borrow, borrow…spend, spend, spend.

ted c on October 15, 2009 at 2:07 PM
The whole COLA reasoning here is just cover. He just wants to pay them off because he knows they are pissed as all hell at him.
Interesting strategy the Dems cooked up here. Make health care reform “deficit neutral” by making cuts, and then just make up for the cuts in different bills. Neat how that works.

Seniors don’t use energy? They don’t heat homes? They don’t turn on the lights? They don’t fly anywhere? They never take the bus? They NEVER drive anywhere? Coulda fooled me last time I was in Tampa.
As for housing. Even if they own their home and are unaffected by prices, they do pay property tax. Property tax is based on the value of the home. Lower price = lower tax.

ICBM on October 15, 2009 at 2:19 PM
It’s a great idea. The GOP should call for it to be increased in amount, expanded to all taxpayers and made permanent. They could call it a tax cut. When the dems complain about the cost, pay for it by canceling the back end of the wasteful stimulus program. If the dems just add it to the deficit, then charge them with enacting a second stimulus because the first failed miserably.

The $250 figure is only an average. Liberal Senior Citizens will get nothing because they’re already in the tank for Obama. In fact, they’ll willingly euthanize themselves in support of Obamacare. For the rest of the Senior Citizen who are really pissed about what’s on the horizon, the bribe will be much higher.

OT – Anyone watching the Bambi speech in New Orleans???
Some highlights:
He began by thanking Landreau, local politicians and then swooned “We are working hard to repair the corruption in the NO Housing authority”
“When I became President, I told my admin N.O. was a #1 priority. That is why more Cabinet members have visited here than anywhere else in the country – not just to vist, but to ask questions
For the record – 4 years later – N.O. unemployment – 6.8%.
I think its hysterical the Ego in Chief needs to pander to N.O. residents, in the “blame Bush/Fed gov.” meme, while the economy, foreign affairs, Afghanistan, etc are falling apart.
Poor silly little Bambi – needs a daily boost each day to “validate” himself.

do you even bother to THINK about what other people write?
Seniors drive much LESS than the average population, which is what the CPI is based on.
Seniors also have different housing costs… as many own their own homes, and others spend much MORE due to having to live in a Care facility.
As to Energy? Did you bother to see where I said some went up, and some went down…
I maintain that they could do a better job of managing the needs of Seniors if they created a CPI type of infrastructure for SENIORS, and did not base it upon the standard population.
