Russian security advisor: We reserve the right to nuke you preemptively
posted at 6:12 pm on October 14, 2009 by Allahpundit
Just a little follow-up to Ed’s post earlier, tracking the progress of The One’s global disarmament efforts.
Hey — the committee did say that Nobel was aspirational.
In an interview published today in Izvestia, Nikolai Patrushev, the secretary of the Kremlin’s security council, said the new doctrine offers “different options to allow the use of nuclear weapons, depending on a certain situation and intentions of a would-be enemy. In critical national security situations, one should also not exclude a preventive nuclear strike against the aggressor.”
What’s more, Patrushev said, Russia is revising the rules for the employment of nukes to repel conventionally armed attackers, “not only in large-scale, but also in a regional and even a local war.”
Gulp. If I were in Georgia — or in any other country Russia considers part of its sphere of influence — that formulation would make me pretty anxious…
In the interview, he takes a swipe at the United States and NATO, saying that the alliance “continues to press for the admission of new members to NATO, the military activities of the bloc are intensifying, and U.S. strategic forces are conducting intensive exercises to improve the management of strategic nuclear weapons.”
“The military activities of the bloc are intensifying”? After Obama just pulled long-range missile defense out of Poland and the Czech Republic? The oddest thing about this isn’t Moscow’s willingness to nuke its neighbors — I’ve always taken that as a given, even though none of them could ever conceivably threaten Russia — but the fact that they’re willing to rattle their saber so soon after The One made a major concession to them. Are they trying to make him turn hawkish? Because that’s what’s going to happen, whether he wants it to or not, if foreign policy somehow becomes a key issue in 2012. Why not string him along for a bit and see if they can milk a few more concessions out of him? Who knows? He might be willing to yank eastern European missile defense entirely if they play ball on Iran.
Well, at least we know it can’t get much worse. Or can it?

Go Jawbone that Russian security advisor Obama. Tell him you have a plan and that he doesn’t need to read it. Mind the fact that the plan will never be put onto paper. Just tell him what you need to sway him and if he is reticent, then impugn him and call him too stupid to know what is good for him.
That is how democracies work right? All I have is my experience in the USA the past 12 months to guide me.

In the face of a Russia willing to use nukes preemptively….Obama will offer more concessions.
It isn’t the results of the talking to another nation, it is the mere fact of talking to another country that is all important from an Obama perspective. It is all about intentions and appearing to be conciliatory…never about results. Can’t have results when you vote “present.”
Thus…to use a well-worn phrase…we are so screwed.

The Russians need nukes to continue punching above their weight. These statements merely formalize what’s been known for a long time – that Russia, lacking the wherewithal to defend itself conventionally, has been nuclearizing its border defense. (Russia also happens to have developed a new warhead which it claims can be maneuvered evasively against terminal phase missile defenses.)
With a weak and retiring US superpower, or a US perceived that way, all sorts of dangers increase, of course, but Russian conventional military strength is still largely in tremendous decline, in some key areas, like its blue water navy, probably irreversibly in decline. In turn, despite the dangers, it means that Russia kind of likes a world in which nukes and terrorism/low-level warfare neutralize US advantages in conventional arms.

Don’t be foolish, they recognize who Obama is, they know him, they know his support.
They know that for him to get conservative support he would have to give up health care, ACORN, unions…they know him, they have studied him, and they have come to the same conclusion that most of us have.
He is weak, erratic, naive, afraid to make a mistake, afraid to make a stand, and he has no friends to back him up.
The military dislike him, we dislike him, no one trusts him…the problem is, Obama may over-react because he has no sense of history, and he doesn’t know how to engage.

ICBM on October 14, 2009 at 6:39 PM
It may end up being true. How many of the first world nations care about the third world ones? If the USA is removed from the first world stage then it is likly that nobody will care about us and we will in fact be a lot safer. From outside forces that is. internally is another matter and I think in a few years we will be hard pressed to differentiate ourselves from the typical third world totalitarian hellhole.

Yeah but so what? The gigantic group of Soviet Forces in Germany (GSFG) would have squashed the conventional forces of NATO if they had been ordered into battle during the Cold War. The most powerful American armies were confined to the US zone fo occupation, for political reasons, and didn’t face the most powerful Soviet Divisions. However the Iron Curtain border was nucelarised so there was no conventional armed struggle. What, aside from mass immigration, can threaten a country with nuclear defenses anyway?

There’s always the possibility that the Russian government if both trying to push Obama to see just how wimpy he actually is, while at the same time they remember that Carter was followed by Reagan, and if they don’t take advantage of America’s weakness right now they may get a far stronger president who won’t tolerate the same type of saber rattling after 2012.

The latest White House response to what is next for Afghanistan will be weeks away at best….
Weeks?
Meanwhile…what happens? Good people get killed. Our “allies” continue to see us as weak. Our enemies see us as without fortitude.
Jump forward to an event the Russians set up, in the Caucasus, the Balkans, in the Baltic, off our own shores from Cuba or Venezuela. Or China decides that their newly armed and modern trained military needs a quick victory to show how far they’ve come. We won’t have weeks to dither.
What happens? A lot more good people get killed, and/or we become part of a Russia-China fiefdom.
Obama once in a while talks a good game but he has no game.
Rational serious decisions are best based on experience and contact with the adversary at hand. Obama has neither. Russia knows this. China knows this. Unfortunately, way too many Americans have no clue, either.
Yes, bad times ahead. Unless we, Americans, put a stop to this. 2010 will be a watershed year in America. We either vote and put an end to the Dem-controlled Congress, and for the remaining two years of the Obama Administration put Obama in a very small place in governance, or, we allow the Dems to continue to control Congress, and allow Obama a ready alibi to continue his present course.
Bad times ahead…if we don’t put a stop to this.
