Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on October 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Barack Obama and his White House decided to fight two wars this week, and neither of them were in Afghanistan. The Obama administration took shots at liberal bloggers and Fox News, the former in response to their impatience on key campaign promises, and the latter because … it’s Fox News. As Andrew Malcolm notes, there is a method to the madness of riling the progressive bloggers:
Now, why would a Democratic White House want to annoy — even infuriate — the far side of its activist liberal base that was so crucial to his election? Well, what are they gonna do, announce allegiance to Ron Paul? That ultra-progressive sector simply has nowhere else to go. So, what’s to worry?
Also, Obama enjoys overwhelming support generally among the nation’s Democrats. So what if his popularity there plummets to 80%?
Now, who’s the president gonna need to support healthcare reform and bandage this Afghan mess heading into the 2010 midterm election year when history says he’ll likely lose seats on the Hill? Bingo, those same conservative/centrist House pals of Emanuel’s whose incumbencies are a main shield against any Republican resurgence.
Oh, and about those crucial Independents who elected Obama last November and then started falling away all summer as Obama’s liberal spending, reforms and deficits metastasized? What better way to let those swayable folks come back home than by asking the helpful question, how can Obama possibly be an ultra-liberal if he’s being so publicly vilified by angry ultra-liberals?
Andrew’s fine political analysis makes this a kind of Sister Souljah moment, which is true, but Sister Souljah had an audience of … millions. Plus, when Bill Clinton made her an example, he was a candidate, not President. It’s a question of stature. When White Houses attack bloggers, it puts them on the same level as the President in terms of stature, and that can only mean lowering the stature of the President in that equation.
John Nichols, writing in The Nation — hardly a conservative bellwether — makes the same point about the weird declaration of war on Fox News:
Presidents are supposed to rise above their own partisanship and engage with a wide range of media — even outlets that are hard on their administrations.
In fact, presidents should go out of their way to accept invites from media that can be expected to poke, prod and pester them. The willingness to take the hits suggests that a commander-in-chief is not afraid to engage with his critics. It also reminds presidents, who tend to be cloistered, that there are a lot of Americans who get their information from sources that do not buy what the White House press office is selling. …
When Dunn was asked whether the president refused to accept interview requests from Fox because the White House sees the network as “a wing of the Republican party,” the communications director responded: “Is this why he did not appear? The answer is yes.”
That is such a radically wrong response that it calls into question the whole communications strategy of an administration that has somehow managed to take a man who was elected with a mandate and lodge him in a corner where there are now serious questions about whether a Democratic president and an overwhelmingly Democratic Congress can enact basic elements of the Democratic agenda.
Nichols calls Obama a “whiner” later in this piece, but what he describes is a man (and a staff) that have no sense of the office which he holds — in short, an amateur, and one not learning particularly quickly, either.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

I am really beginning to wonder about all of the Ivy League schools and what kind of adults they are turning out.

Lately, some of us have played with the concept of the Obama adminstration as Nixion. During the campaign and of late I have been reminded of a Watergate era political cartoon by Paul Conrad; it showed Nixon nailing himself to a cross.
Would someone please tell President Whiner to stop nailing himself to his own cross?

this is O/T: but is there any among us that believes the Unions won’t get the tax on cadillac health plans (such as what they have) deleted from the socialized medicine that might be thrust upon us?

As President, the filthy lying coward represents all the people. He doesn’t have the luxury of only appearing on the outlets that are part of his propaganda machine. It is a weakness to any argument that he makes when he only shows up for Charlie Gibson or Chris Matthews instead of facing off against Chris Wallace or Major Garrett.

But, then again, look what they have to work with…

Just wait until Obama announces his “tax cut” (handout) next year to pay off voters to vote Democrat.

More importantly, is their a single honest person out there who doesn’t think signing a blank piece of paper into law so it can be written after it’s already law isn’t an act of criminal fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud?

Mr. Eloquence and Insight is afraid to take the hard questions from FOX, Ogabe knows he would be out of his league and his element so he hides. This is beyond amateur, this is dangerous to have a man so insulated and unwilling to face critics.

Whiner-in-Chief
The Obama administration really needs to get over itself.
An administration that won the White House with an almost always on-message campaign and generally friendly coverage from old and new media is now frustrated by its inability to control the debate and get the coverage it wants.

Since some dems have been talking about a second stimulus, most likely, tax cuts would be part of that.

They’ll probably get ammendment that exempts union plans from the tax. Everyone else will have to pay.

doriangrey on October 14, 2009 at 8:34 AM
When the Obama Executive branch decides to attack the media in such an open and ham-handed way it clearly shows that the Obama Executive branch is no longer the United States Executive branch, but the Democrat Party Executive branch. For decades we, the United States, derided one-party rule across the globe, and now, it appears the “adults” in the Obama White House want nothing less than one-party rule. Welcome to the Third World.
Amatuerism? Perhaps not. More troubling is that all of this appears to be by design.
That’s no amateurism. It is loathsome. It is abhorrent. It is clearly contrary to anything envisioned by the Founders. It must be stopped.

Speak out on the issues where Warner/Webb/Perriello are wrong. You don’t have to carry the load of all but pick one or two areas where you are passionate and become a pain in their rumps. Constantly bombarding their office with specific questions, letters to the Editor in the “Daily Regress” Whatever to sway public opinion.
Stuart Varney was on Hannity’s radio program yesterday and he had an interesting slant on Obamacare. He thinks it will be DOA if the McDonnell wins next month because it will be a warning shot across the bow of all the moderate Dems thinking that they might be able to support Obamacare and still get elected in 2010. I’m not sure that is entirely true but it does seem to me that the filthy liar in the White House isn’t expending a whole lot of political capital to help Deeds. In fact, the filthy liar would probably hurt Deeds more than it would help. In any case, we need to make sure that McDonnell wins by a huge landslide.

Yes. It’s frightening. And you’re right, the country I now live in seems more and more like a third world country. And they will do worse because they control the overwhelming majority of the news and entertainment media outlets, academia, public school systems and unions. We have a lot of work to do to turn this around, and it won’t be easy.
But, I still have hope. We can do it.

What they had were Taverns and Pubs, where they gathered together drank beer and whiskey and shared their concerns and ideas. We are fortunate enough as you say to have the internet, it is our community Pub, where we may gather to share our concerns and ideas.
It is where we can and will gather our strength, shape our goals and mount our defense of the great republic that those men of immense foresight bequeathed unto us. We shall not allow this great republic to slip quietly into the long dark night of totalitarian neo-fascism…
doriangrey on October 14, 2009 at 9:00 AM
its nice to think that a McDonnell win (Republican for Va. Governor) would sway the moderate Dem Congressmen from wrecking our country.
but they got the message with the summer Townhalls. they do.not.give.a.SH*T. about us.
all of them want to destroy our country. i don’t know why, but if they did not want to destroy our country, they would get rid of Nancy Pelosi, first, then march themselves to the White HOuse.

Isn’t this pointing out the obvious? Barry has surrounded himself with like-minded people. He’s insulated and utterly clueless. He’d much rather play basketball and campaign, which are the only things he knows how to do well.
BTW, Barry only ranked #15 on the “World’s Hottest Leaders” list. I’m guessing the word “leader” in the title was his biggest stumbling block.

Finally we find out what part of history the progressives actually hold dear. This “phantom legislation” was used for many of the bills passed during the Roosevelt years. You can bet your bottom dollar that Nancy Pelosi knew all about it and taught it well.

He’s the ‘Barack in the Plastic Bubble’, encased in a protective cocoon in order to ensure that nothing compromises his frail belief system. He is so weak in so many areas; history, what makes America exceptional, economics, etc. that his handlers cannot allow him to be placed in the situation of being interviewed by individuals who are well-versed in those subjects. They keep him away, so he isn’t made to look like the bumbler that he is, and in doing so, make him look not only like a fool, but a fool who is too afraid to be challenged on his beliefs. Instead of his Fortress of Solitude, Barack ‘Superman‘ Obama has his Echo Chamber of Adoration staffed by the likes of Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, et. al. to reassure him in his awesomeness despite never having accomplished anything to justify all the accolades he receives.
