I think many of thos IRG Generals have made themselves very rich so I might disagree with you on ideology part. What I mean by that as they will go for a hardline DrK type as that means thay can still use hardline ideolgy to control the population and keep business as usual. How many times has it been said and it never gets old or false, "follow the money".

I disagree that the Guard is exclusively in control unless you want to include Khamenhei (hereafter referred to as “Dr. K” for purposes of simplification).

The Guard was dead on loyal to the old Ayatollah Khomenei – and Dr. K was a disciple. In fact – according to the Constitution, Dr. K wasn’t even qualified to take Khomenei’s position as Supreme Poo-bah – because Dr. K wasn’t a Grand Ayatollah – just a lowly cleric. A quick constitutional change solve that problem though. I believe the Guard is loyal to Dr. K – because Dr. K was loyal to Khomenei.

The new Supreme Poo-bah will be someone who was a loyal servant of Khomenei. The Islamic Guard aren’t a mafia – they are religious zealots. They are loyal to the Islamic Revolution and they want … NEED … a Supreme Leader that they can stand with. They aren’t looking for a puppet they can control. They are looking for someone they can have a symbiotic relationship with.

It’s not Rafsanjani.

And I don’t think it will be any moderate. The IRG will want someone they can genuine look up to as a true Islamic Supreme Poo-bah – and trying to “game the west” with a moderate is not their style. They will opt for ideology over political expediency.
