Breaking: Limbaugh to be dropped from NFL bid for Rams
posted at 4:51 pm on October 14, 2009 by Allahpundit
Instapundit wondered earlier if this was all a stunt to bait the media in classic Rush style. Doesn’t sound like it.
Rush Limbaugh is expected to be dropped from a group bidding to buy the St. Louis Rams, according to three NFL sources.
Dave Checketts, chairman of the NHL’s St. Louis Blues and the point man in the Limbaugh group attempting to buy the Rams, realizes he must remove the controversial conservative radio host from his potential role as a minority member in the group in order to get approval from other NFL owners, the sources said…
Exactly when Limbaugh will be dropped is uncertain, though some familiar with the situation said it could be within the next week. It is unclear if the two sides even have spoken.
Earlier Wednesday, on his syndicated radio show, Limbaugh was defiant, holding on to hope that he still could be part of the ownership group that buys the Rams.
“I’m not even thinking of exiting,” Limbaugh said on his program, according to a transcript provided to ESPN. “I’m not even thinking of caving. I am not a caver. None of us are. We have been betrayed by too many who have caved. Pioneers take the arrows. We are pioneers. It’s a sad thing but our country over 200 years old now needs pioneers all over again, but we do.”
Just yesterday, Goodell called Limbaugh’s old comments on Donovan McNabb “divisive” and unwelcome in the league, which I guess was his hint hint hint to Checketts to start over. From a business standpoint it’s hard to blame him — seeing the league mentioned in news segments about a “plantation” mentality can’t be good for the bottom line — but I guess that’ll depend on whether Rush tries to exact some sort of economic punishment. Anyone expect southern conservatives to boycott football? Me neither.
Update: An interesting point from the comments: If he’s serious about suing for defamation over the false racist quotes attributed to him, he’s now got a claim for damages. Still a tough suit to win but that’s an extra little carrot.
Update: Needless to say, the next vocal liberal who tries to buy a sports franchise is going to have a hell of a time.

But,, here in PA, most conservatives voted for Lynn Swan over Rendell last election. So,, I guess that was when PA Democrats were all racists and Republicans were not.
I think I need a T Shirt that says “I did not vote for Obama but I voted for Lynn Swann”
I’d Love to see Lynn Swann run again.

“Funny thing about this whole matter is that Rush loves to congratulate himself for always knowing liberals better thatn anyone. Yet, he wolked blindly into what a third grader would have known was a set-up for failure.
I love Rush’s analytical skills and will forever be thankful for him during the early years of alternate news which he pioneered, but he now merely reads the same stuff I read on the web hours earlier and is off somewhere else more than not. His ego is a counter productive problem, and it’s sickening to hear someone get on his program easily by praising him or asking a football, golf or cigar question.
I’m actually happy when Mark Steyn is on.
Just the same-I’m addicted and recognize that he just got screwed by the racist left.

I am so pissed! I was yelling and crying when I heard this last night! I hope Rush sues the hell out of everyone who slandered him. If you don’t listen to Rush everyday you don’t know how sarcastic and dry his sense of humor is. Hell I’ve been listening to him almost 20 years and I don’t always know that he’s kidding when he says stuff. This is over the freakin top! Rush loves his football and he’s knowledgeable of the sport! Just pisses me off!

I love how the libs pin slavery and “keeping the black man down” to Republicans. Hey dumb welfare class, turn off Tyra Banks and pick up a history book. Your ignorant trust in the liberals is what is enslaving your generations.

This is going to be fun…Rush is going to milk this for all it’s worth, and it is worth a lot.
MSNBC/NBC, CBS, ABC, individuals are all going to be begging for forgiveness by time this is over.
The amount of publicity, the size of the lawsuits, the fun of watching the MSM dodge and weave in trying to say they didn’t say anything wrong, will be a great show.
Get your popcorn, buy a little extra butter, and enjoy the show under the big tent.
They handed him the marketing tool of all tools…the stupid liberals stepped in it, they just couldn’t help themselves.
Rush, you are a genius…If you got the Rams, great publicity…being prevented to buy the Rams, priceless.

NFL owners must approve, and this was doomed the nano-second Rev Al opened his maw. NFL owners are not known for their non-pusillanimity. And allusions to plantations petrify them.
Yes, their players make lots of money, but try to live fifty years after with no cartilage in your knees and the ligaments stapled on.
Unitas — arguably the father of the modern game – couldn’t lift his right arm. (http://tinyurl.com/ykwmgtg)
“He played golf by strapping his gloved right hand to the club shaft with a Velcro strip. The middle three fingers on his right hand did not work, and to sign autographs he held a pen between his thumb and little finger and wrote slowly.” And the NYT obit soft-soaps his fight with the league. “He hoped to receive league-financed disability payments but learned that because he was receiving a monthly pension, he could not also collect disability because he had not filed for it by age 55, as the pension-fund rules required.”)
If ESPN really cared so much, they would be all over current similar cases, but it would amount to killing the golden goose. No one avoids violence against golden geese better than an NFL owner. So Rush is better off.

I find it ironic that Mr. Irsay, a member of a family that moved a franchise out of Baltimore IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT in Mayflower moving vans, has the moral spine to opine and state that Rush Limbaugh wouldn’t get his “yes” vote as an prospective owner… From where I’m sitting, Rush would be a VERY positive addition to the NFL owner gene pool…

Come up with a list of criminal offenses of athletes between these two professional sports (baseball not much better) and see what you come up with.
A list embarrassing long, from murder to rape, animal cruelty to non-support of wives….wasn’t it the great NBA player, Larry Bird, who never paid spousal or child support? He never paid one penny for his daughter Corrie, even when making millions, he couldn’t afford to pay for college for his daughter.

Military expenses don’t begin to match those of entitlements. And about those, like food stamps and such: 65% of the budget for those programs goes to the bureaucracy that administers them. $400 million for food stamps being spent this year? Only $140 million goes to the people. The rest is kept by the government for the workers who dole it back to those in need.
You seriously need to get over your own anger, see what’s really going on, and step up to Marlboro Country.

I don’t think so. This is a reality check for Mr. Limbaugh. Wake up and smell that you’re an asshole. Outside his audience, people don’t like him. Why should they? He lives his life spewing hateful and divisive comments.
The “liberals” didn’t bring him down. The NFL didn’t want him because he’s an asshole.
If Olberman wanted to get in on a group trying to buy a team, you wouldn’t get this reaction. I mean, now you’d get the wingnuts jumping up and down throwing feces all over the place, but I think in the overall population of the NFL and country, there wouldn’t be the resistance. He’s able to go on NBC and have a good time with the sport. Rush went on ESPN and had to be an asshole. That’s the difference. Rush is an asshole.
Tom_Shipley on October 15, 2009 at 8:24 AM
I agree 100% Mr. right. And, by being dropped from the group pursuing the purchase of the Rams, Rush now has potentially millions in extra financial damages. It wouldn’t surprise me if Rush setup the morons on the left. The guy is a genius.

Called the NFL offices this morning, and Goodall isn’t in the office today. Gutless. What upsets me most is that evil has won–vile lies, acknowledged as lies but “they’re still true”, were used relentlessly to deny a private citizen the opportunity to fulfill a dream. Now the Left is in full-on smug/gloat mode and it makes me sick. Listen to them this morning justifying their behavior in such a self-righteous manner.
You want standards for the owners? Fine. But apply those f’ing standards to the players/felons on the field.

When liberals decide to pursue an investment and a conservative group stalls their dreams, I will see some serious crap.
I want Rush -he started yesterday, he should continue today- to enlighten the audience and remind everybody how these two tools seek fame and recognition, even if it means smearing MLK’s blood on their bodies to claim that he died in Jackson’s arms. He asked yesterday, “Want me to keep going?” I sure DO!
He could use a whole week, 3 hours a day to go thru every single Dem or lib reporter. Journalists who don’t do their job should not care b/c of FACT-CHECKED information. And journalism is dead.
ProudPalinFan on October 15, 2009 at 9:06 AM
The Left will paint this as a victory but, in the end, does it matter? Rush hasn’t been knocked off the air, so nothing is truly changed. Rush saved himself a lot of money, too, but not having to buy into a losing team.
The Left, realistically, lost if anyone lost anything at all. They showed themselves, which is what everyone on our side wants. Moderates and independents, those who straddle fences, will maybe look at the accusations of false quotes and reach personal decisions on the matter. It’s not foregone that all will side with the elite media. Much more can happen from there.
That, for us, is a victory.

I see no loss to Rush at all in this, none of any real measure. The Rams, though, might end up losing big time, as might their new owners/investors.

Rush demands excellence, most of himself. With him as a partial owner, the Rams might win a Super Bowl in a few short years.
I think some of the problem, at its root, is that Rush would be like that and require either the best from his team or start making trades if not outright ‘firing’ players who are mediocre yet still making millions.
Professional sports, of its nature, is a ‘plantation’ already. Players are traded like meat on a hook, or like slaves were sold or traded 150 years ago. Rush wouldn’t have been any different from any other ‘owner’ of a team.
Of course, that’s a detail left ignored.

“Black racism”. It was White owners that denied his bid. The Black people you are referring to are the players that refused to play for someone who says things like, “the government has been taking care of young blacks all their lives”. Don’t you think that’s a gross generalization of a race of people? How does he know that the government has taken care of ALL young blacks? That’s humor and tongue-in-cheek, to some, but it was pretty offensive to me. I work for a living, my father worked for a living, my mother, my brothers, and he smeared the heck outta us, to make a joke. I like comedy, but Rush is not a comedian, he’s never done stand-up, so I have to believe that he means what he says, and if he doesn’t, then quite frankly he IS a joke. For someone who’s core audience hates when the race card is played, you would think race would not be a factor in his radio program at all. Maybe other NFL team owners feel and say the same things as Rush, but they don’t make it known, but when they do, I hope the same standards apply to them. This is capitalism at work folks. Employees have the right to refuse to work for anyone, no matter what the case. Would any of you work for Keith Olbermann?

Probably the only thing worse that blatant racism; is the blatant false charge of racism and the perpetuation of lies. I have listened to Rush Limbaugh over the years and been surprised and very disappointed to hear from third and forth sources that he had said or done something distasteful enough to warrant being ostracized; only to find out later that it was taken way out of context or was simply a lie. I’m to the point where I dismiss most things that the MSM purports about him.
Alinsky still rules in liberalism and evidently he rules in the NFL also.
hawkdriver on October 15, 2009 at 9:46 AM

If you honestly think Limbaugh is some merchant of tough love and hard truths, you’re an… well, you’re a Limbaugh fan, so I should take it easy on you.
If you can’t see Limbaugh as the opportunist egomaniac that he is, well, God bless you. He knows how to play you guys like a Stradivarius. He appeals to the basest fears of white america and rakes in the cash. “This is Obama’s America, black kids beating white kids while the other black kids cheer him on!”
Does Rush let you drink and 6-pack, ClassicCon?
Tom_Shipley on October 15, 2009 at 9:54 AM
Rush has never said all blacks are on the public teat, so blacks as a whole aren’t ever his target.
Rush aims at the rich, white, limousine liberals who have been telling black Americans they can’t make it without ‘help’ from people who burn a thousand dollars a week lighting their mansions.
And, yes, those who bought into that racist notion are also to blame for their personal inaction. Rush wants every American, no matter ethnicity, to succeed. He wasn’t born rich; he has been broke several times, by his own admission. He believes, basically, that if he can make it then so can everyone else if they try. Many don’t try, and that spans the racial spectrum.
What Rush hates is liberalism. Because of it, there are problems in black neighborhoods that night not be there if government hadn’t been selling snake oil to black America for the past 40 years. Rush’s issue is with liberalism, not black people. Anyone who consistently listens to Rush for a few weeks will know easily just what the man stands for.
Liam on October 15, 2009 at 10:00 AM
You want to quote some figure on just how wrong Limbaugh is? Is it only 15% of black children that receive some type of entitlement benefit? That would be a gross mischaracterization of the black community, but if the percentage is high enough to be accepted as a general truth then is it racism to state that truth.
DFCtomm on October 15, 2009 at 10:01 AM

Hmmm…well considering the fact that I’m 26 and NEVER been on welfare, and my mother and father were NEVER on welfare. I’d say that he was lying. Now, my question is, why did he think it was necessary to point out that young blacks receive assistant from the government? Every race at some point receives money from the government right? Just to give you guys some context to defend Rush from his comment: There was a study that came out of Chicago that said that a large majority of young blacks feel alienated by the government and his response was…”Why would that be? The government’s been taking care of them their whole lives.” I don’t know about you guys, but this sounds like bs to me. C’mon dude, is the fact that Thomas Sowell is black supposed to give some weight to his opinions? I think for myself. This isn’t about the MSM, so stop trying to deflect from the fact that NONE of you would ever work for K.O., but expect black athletes to fall in line as if the quote I cited never existed. Rush has a history of making racially charged statements, gross generalizations, and playing the race card for whatever reason. Maybe it’s meant be humor, satire, but the jokes are always on us. Of course he goes after liberals, he’s a conservative, but why bring race into the conversation? It’s okay to discuss issues of race, but we shouldn’t denigrate people while doing so.

The stab was at government, not black Citizens. Government thinks it’s doing so well, yet black people feel alienated. How is that possible if government is doing the great job it thinks it’s doing?
Government and those running it are what Rush lampoons. Maybe if you look at such comments in that light, you might see a different perspective. Just an idea, trying to be helpful to a fellow Citizen.

Liam on October 15, 2009 at 10:36 AM
Anecdotal. My parents were circus performers and I’m a circus performer so therefore isn’t everyone a circus performer?
That is a good question. You see racism but we, generally, feel that entitlement programs rot a community’s motivation to ever achieve. We feel it harms more than it helps, and also that it is theft via the ballot.
Neither of us know him, so we don’t know his true motivation, but I think he say’s provocative statements like you quoted to stir up controversy. It’s also a push back mechanism. The definition of racism has been expanded to the point that we can’t discuss issues like this, so when a Limbaugh opens the discussion and takes the initial heat for us, then it allows us to talk more openly.
You’re confusing your racial group for the entitlement program. We are more willing to judge people on the content of their character than democrats are, but we do oppose the programs as wrong, and in many ways evil.

DFCtomm on October 15, 2009 at 10:41 AM
Nope. If he wanted to take a shot at the government he should’ve done so. He didn’t misspeak…Rush is too intelligent to do that. It was meant to take a shot at young blacks. He was echoing the age old stereotype that young blacks want government assistance, hand-outs, and we are all lazy, so we have no right to complain. This is bs. I work for a living and take care of my family and never ask the government for s#!%. If anything the government asks a lot of me at times. I don’t believe for one minute that Rush is a racist, but I think he says things to be edgy, but unfortunately we are the butt of a lot of his jokes and that should change…maybe not, it’s been wildly successful thus far, lol.

Now you are just being naive. So Rush blasting your side for constantly playing the race card, is now himself playing the race card? Interesting. When members of your side riot at a concert and people get trampled it is because the doors to the club were racist. Yes that is an actual story.
Your side has made careers pumping up racial hatred, and when someone dares to call them out on it, they are playing the race card. I shouldn’t be surprised.
On a side note, I appreciate your level headed arguing about the subject. Gives me hope.

Don’t forget Spathi and dave742, wherever he’s been. They both show up on Israel threads.
StoneKrab, you just said that you don’t believe that Rush is saying Racist things. Then why should the Justice Borthers and everybody else have any right to make up lies about him to destroy a business deal?

By the way, Rush explained the Crips and Bloods comment yesterday. He was using it to describe the way the players are excessively taunting one another out on the field, to the dedrigation of the game. In fact, the San Diegto Chargers lost a game because of a penalty for excessive taunting. Later, Mercury Morris, the former great running back for the Miami Dolphins, said he understood what Rush was sayng and agreed with Rush.

We seem to think Limbaugh hasn’t thought this situation through. Not so. Now there are damages, huge verifiable damages. I may be crazy but by way of Limbaugh acting with some premeditative strangeness regarding the NFL gig, he has now allowed CNN, MSNBC etc., to let loose with a barrage of untrue, unlawful inflammatory personal insults that will result in big time damages. He gave them the rope and they ran with it. I think he’s going to go after the networks, the individuals and any other party associated with this smear and not only win but win millions that he will proudly give to a charity of his choice. This is only the beginning and I think after 20 years or so of tuning in I know how this man will react.

I guess somebody needs to ask the very serious question..when did racially charged become racist?
And who proclaimed that 70% Black player participation in one sport means, what exactly? That a high percentage of Black players means its more racist for Rush to partially own a team or that Black players get college scholarship preferences?
That at 70% and probably billions in pay and after achieving discrimination against Rush Limbaugh that Black players and Black race mongers don’t have the power to be racist?

No they aren’t. They never do.
Again, you’re only human if you’re a liberal. That’s how they think. If you are not a leftist (or at least keep your non-leftist sentiments securely to yourself), anything that can stick in the way of innuendo, slander or defamation is fair game.

I think Rush’s greatest success is blasting libs. But I do see your point and understand the reasoning behind your argument.

Perhaps you and your friend missed the last 7 pages, dear, but answers to all your questions are right there. If commentary from most HotAir contributors is a bit too complex for you and your friend, here is a summary : there is no record of anything David GetFox Axelrod’s media alleges Rush said. That is why everyone is talking about suing for defamation, dear. Glad to be of help.

“Justice Brothers”? I’m assuming you are speaking of Al and Jesse? I can’t speak for them. Hell, I don’t even like them, lol. I do believe that everyone should held accountable for their own actions and statements. The players looked at some of his rhetoric and had the same reaction I have had on numerous occasions and said, “No way am I playing for a guy who thinks this about me.” The owners probably agree with a lot of what Rush says, but they are thinking about the bottomline and controversy is always bad for a perceived, “family-friendly” business such as the NFL.
I’m no different than you. We want the same things, we just sometimes differ on how to obtain them.

I’m curious. How do you yourself feel about entitlement programs, and it’s not simply a problem with the black community. I grew up in a rural all white area, and it was a problem there as well. Whole families making a tradition of living off entitlement programs. That is not a generalization. One of the advantages/disadvantages of a small community is that everybody knows everybody else.

Good question. Personally, I feel that one should get what one is willing to work for. I don’t feel race should play a factor in who should get what in any situation. That’s why I’m against affirmative action and I’ve stated this several times on HA. A lot of my peers hold this belief as well, and some of them are minorities who come from poor backgrounds, whom historically these entitlement programs were largely geared towards. A lot of these programs were put in place to so-called right the wrongs of the past and in some cases the present; but what the government didn’t realize is that while they were attempting to destroy racist hiring practices, they were ultimately creating even more racist programs against whites. I don’t understand that sort of logic. However, people with power an obligation to hire the best man/woman for the job; not look at the person’s skin and ultimately make your decision. Unfortunately for Americans this practice has occurred all too often, and here we are. Sorry for the rant, but you asked a good question.

I am a woman who loves to watch football. I also love honesty and fair play. Roger Goodell displayed neither characteristic, not to mention courage. He doesn’t appear to even know the facts – namely that Rush didn’t say the things he’s being blamed for. What a sorry excuse of a “man” to be running the NFL.
beulah on October 15, 2009 at 11:54 AM
Rush spews ridicule, hatred, division, and racism 3 hours a day/5 days week. When he is called out on it you blame the people who are calling him out on it?
Oh poor little Rushbo. What did he ever do to deserve such treatment? He is just so nice to everybody.

I posted this on another Rush thread. Remember this was started by the NFL union head who supported Obama(not Sharpton and Jackson). Obama owns the unions. Does anyone other than me think this originated from the WH?

I would not be the least bit surprised. Hey, Decider. Try listening to Rush first before you run off at the mouth about him. Telling the truth does not seem to be a high priority for all of Rush’s attackers in this situation.

So Rush says one of his “Jerry Springer Show” comments but then when called on it he gets a second chance to make softer? Is that how it works or does he speak some sort of unique Dittohead language?

What do you consider yourself politically? Do you think of yourself as conservative? I’m asking because I don’t see that much ideological ground between our viewpoints. If you don’t consider yourself conservative then what part of our ideology do you disagree with?
