Breaking: Limbaugh to be dropped from NFL bid for Rams

posted at 4:51 pm on October 14, 2009 by Allahpundit

Instapundit wondered earlier if this was all a stunt to bait the media in classic Rush style. Doesn’t sound like it.

Rush Limbaugh is expected to be dropped from a group bidding to buy the St. Louis Rams, according to three NFL sources.

Dave Checketts, chairman of the NHL’s St. Louis Blues and the point man in the Limbaugh group attempting to buy the Rams, realizes he must remove the controversial conservative radio host from his potential role as a minority member in the group in order to get approval from other NFL owners, the sources said…

Exactly when Limbaugh will be dropped is uncertain, though some familiar with the situation said it could be within the next week. It is unclear if the two sides even have spoken.

Earlier Wednesday, on his syndicated radio show, Limbaugh was defiant, holding on to hope that he still could be part of the ownership group that buys the Rams.

“I’m not even thinking of exiting,” Limbaugh said on his program, according to a transcript provided to ESPN. “I’m not even thinking of caving. I am not a caver. None of us are. We have been betrayed by too many who have caved. Pioneers take the arrows. We are pioneers. It’s a sad thing but our country over 200 years old now needs pioneers all over again, but we do.”

Just yesterday, Goodell called Limbaugh’s old comments on Donovan McNabb “divisive” and unwelcome in the league, which I guess was his hint hint hint to Checketts to start over. From a business standpoint it’s hard to blame him — seeing the league mentioned in news segments about a “plantation” mentality can’t be good for the bottom line — but I guess that’ll depend on whether Rush tries to exact some sort of economic punishment. Anyone expect southern conservatives to boycott football? Me neither.

Update: An interesting point from the comments: If he’s serious about suing for defamation over the false racist quotes attributed to him, he’s now got a claim for damages. Still a tough suit to win but that’s an extra little carrot.

Update: Needless to say, the next vocal liberal who tries to buy a sports franchise is going to have a hell of a time.

The way it’s presented at times tends to isolate other faiths; also it is often used as a club by the far right to demonize gays and push policies such as anti-gay marriage legislation. I’m not with that. I want everyone to have equal rights regardless of who they choose to fall in love with. Marriage should be between one human being and another human being, IMO. Like I said, I’m more liberal on social issues, but I’m conservative when it comes to the economy. I don’t like high taxes, bail-outs, entitlements; basically government spending, if any, should be limited and only done if albsolutely necessary considering the situation we are in at this moment.

StoneKrab on October 15, 2009 at 1:12 PM

oh yes you’re all for ‘civil rights’ and ‘freedom’ except the freedom of christians to practice their religion….with your precious ‘gay marriage’

you’re just a typical intolerant liberal bigot.

It’s always pick-and-choose among them. Denial among liberals is harder to beat than that among addicts. I don’t know why or how this happens, but it’s their exclusive ‘norm’.

I just don’t get it.

“Magic Negro” was meant to be controversial and increase his ratings. He has to live with it.

Actually, it falls under Alinsky: Ridicule the enemy.

BTW–would you vote for Condi Rice if she ran as a Republican?

Liam on October 15, 2009 at 1:59 PM

Rush Limbaugh uses Alinsky’s techniques daily.

“RULE 5: “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.” There is no defense. It’s irrational. It’s infuriating. It also works as a key pressure point to force the enemy into concessions.” – Sal Alinsky

Rule 5 is used daily on talk radio.

Yes, I would vote for Condi Rice depending on her opponent.

Then don’t pretend that “Conservatism” is under attack. Limbaugh attacks people on a daily basis and is now paying a price for it. This is about Limbaugh specifically not conservatism. Limbaugh is a master entertainer who makes a lot of money. He is not a “Conservative”.

If being a Liberal Commentator made the same kind of money, Limbaugh, Beck, and Hannity would be to the Left of Code Pink.

Decider on October 15, 2009 at 2:15 PM

Rush doesn’t attack people, really. He goes after liberals and Big Government. If Big Oil is a problem, how much more havoc does Big Government cause?

That’s basically the way I see conservatism: We’re against Big Anything.

Big Business can be defeated by We the People. Big Government forces itself on us, on you and me. And BG has a standing army to F us over if it wants. Big Business doesn’t.

That is what we conservatives stand for: all you Biggies get out of our way. We’re free and you’re oppressors.

I disagree. After several posts claiming Rush had to ‘own’ the Magic Negro comment even though he didn’t coin it, his 2:15 post was basically a walkback from incitement of Limbaugh, and conservatives more broadly, as racist to more or less admitting he just didn’t like Limbaugh.

If we can get him to act like an adult and engage on facts more than feelings it will be worth it, even if we never end up agreeing on the issue at hand.

I’m not looking for a ‘victory’, just trying to occassionally pull one of our less ridiculous lefties towards rational debate.

BadgerHawk on October 15, 2009 at 2:58 PM

Was Rush set up?

Good question.

curved space on October 15, 2009 at 3:04 PM

Given Checketts’ background I would be very surprised if he would want to be even remotely associated with Soros. (graduate of BYU…LDS…likely, unlike Reid, very conservative.) But, business is business–Checketts has a Midas touch

Fed45 on October 15, 2009 at 3:45 PM

So that justifies Limbaugh? Again, what part of “Conservatism” does that fall under?

Decider343 on October 15, 2009 at 1:55 PM

Translation:

“Del challlenged me LAST NIGHT to provide credible, multi-sourced cites to prove my accusations that Rush is racist. I cannot do so so will insult him (and Rush) instead.”

Epic FAIL.

Now, how about all of those cites? After all, the burden of proof is on the accuser (you) to prove their charges. It’s not incumbent on the person accused to prove them false.

Del Dolemonte on October 15, 2009 at 3:47 PM

Decider on October 15, 2009 at 1:55 PM

No more than Swift was justified in telling the poor to sell their babies as expensive meat. Modest Proposal showed his true colors of course.

Wait, are you honestly saying that Limbaugh satirizing a column written by a leftist in the LA Times is indicative of the racism in the conservative movement?

BadgerHawk on October 15, 2009 at 2:06 PM

Liam on October 15, 2009 at 4:28 PM

Tim Graham checks in:

When leftist authors and bloggers circulated fabricated Limbaugh quotes, “news” networks and columnists picked them up without giving the slightest appearance of checking for an air date or an audio clip. Opponents of Limbaugh’s Rams bid are currently claiming Limbaugh said the slavery of blacks “had its merits,” and even claiming that Limbaugh praised James Earl Ray, the convicted assassin of Martin Luther King. Supposedly professional cable networks used empty, undated citations like “Rush Limbaugh On The Radio” (CNN) and even sourced a linebacker: “Cited by James Farrior, Pittsburgh Steelers” (MSNBC). In 2007, the liberal media and Democrats in Congress rose up as one and claimed Limbaugh said that soldiers speaking in the media against America’s wars were “phony soldiers,” when Limbaugh was referring to men who made false claims of serving abroad.

Liberal media figures suggest it is a national injustice that Limbaugh has the popularity and influence that he has when his words are so vicious. But while they suggest he needs to be marginalized by the media and the Republican establishment, their coverage and analysis and mockery of Limbaugh has crossed every line of civility and now shows contempt for the elementary rules of evidence.

Speaking of “evidence”, kids, I am still waiting for your evidence that Rush is a racist. It’s been over 24 hours since this thread was started, and you still haven’t provided any.

Del Dolemonte on October 15, 2009 at 4:56 PM

Del Dolemonte on October 15, 2009 at 4:56 PM

I have had this argument with Rush detractors many times. First of all they usually have never once listened to his broadcast. Number two, they say they know what is in his mind. Number three, they say he speaks in racist code.

Seriously; You’ve been here long enough to smell one quickly; Engaging a newby right off will force them to show their hand; you can then decide if it’s worth the effort to continue the engagement, or if they are simply looking for support. Engage, yes; Support, no. Let ‘em dry up and blow away on their own. There ARE more important endeavors with legitimate commentators. I think you’ll agree that we have a good bunch here. We can attract more if we engage them early on and flush out the real trolls. IMHO, of course.

And since the burden of proof is always on the accuser, they prove by their retreats that they’re scum not to be trusted as reliable news sources by anyone except the 70% of high school dropouts who helped elect O’bama President..
