Video: Matthews muses on killing Rush Limbaugh

posted at 12:55 pm on October 13, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Call this the opposite of a tingle up one’s leg. No surprise here from the classiest cable network to drag anchor in the ratings, but consider if someone on Fox had offered this kind of fantasy musing on air about a liberal show host — say, Keith Olbermann or Matthews himself. The Left would have screamed about fascism and brownshirts, and of crypto-signaling for assassinations and the like:

CHRIS MATTHEWS: You guys see Live and Let Die, the great Bond film with Yaphet Kotto as the bad guy, Mr. Big?  In the end they jam a big CO2 pellet in his face and he blew up.  I have to tell you, Rush Limbaugh is looking more and more like Mr. Big, and at some point somebody’s going to jam a CO2 pellet into his head and he’s going to explode like a giant blimp.  That day may come. Not yet. But we’ll be there to watch. I think he’s Mr. Big, I think Yaphet Kotto.  Are you watching, Rush?

Live and Let Die?  Matthews is into the Roger Moore Bond films?  That explains a lot, actually.

Note too, that Matthews isn’t using the dishonest “some people are saying” dodge here, either.  He’s openly wistful for the day it happens, telling Politico’s Jonathan Martin and Washington Post reporter Anne Kornblut that “we’ll be there to watch” when someone offs Rush.

Classy.  Really, really classy.  Does NBC want to stand behind this standard for its broadcasts?

What’s wrong with the Moore Movies? Dalton, sure. But Moore?

Off his meds again, I see.

Chrissy, You look more like a “blimp” then Rush does now. Rather see you in this position. Open wide Chrissy!

Next up, Matthews whining about the uncivil tone in DC.

Seriously though, if Imus can be fired for his “nappy-headed” comment, Chris Mathews should be fired for suggesting somebody knock off Rush.

Can we start sequestering carbon dioxide up Chrissy’s arse?

I think Matthews needs a checkup on his brain.

Good thing no one was taking Matthews seriously anyway. No hearts to break. No hopes to disappoint.

That’s a metaphorical CO2 pellet he’s talking about.

You know, the same type that cause Gorebal Warmening.

Mr. Bingley on October 13, 2009 at 1:01 PM

Kill Rush?

That’s just hilarious, Sissy.

drjohn on October 13, 2009 at 1:01 PM

Roger Moore was the better Bond. Connery’s Bond films were better, but for the essence of the role, it’s Moore without a doubt.

THE CHOSEN ONE on October 13, 2009 at 1:01 PM

Does NBC want to stand behind this standard for its broadcasts?

You’re kidding, right?

Maxpower on October 13, 2009 at 1:01 PM

And these guys have the nerve to talk about hate speech coming from the right?

HondaV65 on October 13, 2009 at 1:01 PM

Now if Rush were to say that about Obama we’d hear loud cries of R-A-C-I-S-M and how Rush was encouraging hate crime.

Has good ole Chris started wandering the set screetching “Who stole the strawberries” yet?

Amateur Hour is becoming loathsome.

regal on October 13, 2009 at 1:01 PM

Yes Ed, they do want to stand behind it. They stand behind the Shultz when he intentionally and dishonestly disparages republicans saying they want people to die.

As far as I’m concerned the problem with NBC is at the very top.

I may be in the minority here, but “Casino Royale” is, in my opinion, the best Bond movie ever, by a landslide.

Rush Limbaugh as Yaphet Kotto. Yes, I see the resemblance. It’s uncanny.

By tonight Matthews will employ the satire defense.

Calling Matthews an asshole would be an insult to peoples’ assholes everywhere.

Obligatory — if a conservative or objective person had said this, liberals everywhere would blame him/her for every act of violence for the next 30 years.

Abby Adams on October 13, 2009 at 1:02 PM

I liked Casino Royale. Didn’t bother seeing the other one – could smell the stink from the name alone. Plus he’s the sexiest Bond by far, so leave him alone. ;-)

Emily M. on October 13, 2009 at 1:05 PM

I liked Roger Moore as James Bond…though Daniel Craig is quite divine in the role. As for Matthews, he really is quickly becoming a fat, useless slob.

Kelligan on October 13, 2009 at 1:06 PM

Just imagine for a moment if the media was not in the bag for the Left – Matthews would be looking for a new line of work about right now.

Oh, and the next time you hear some lefty complaining about those dangerous tea party folks…just give them this quote. A senior member of the State Media musing about killing an opposition leader…

18-1 on October 13, 2009 at 1:06 PM

So Rush doesn’t even have to be fat anymore for these imbeciles to smear him with fat jokes.

I heard Steve Dahl on his podcast yesterday talk about how fat Rush is, and Dahl weighs more than 300 pounds.

Pasalubong on October 13, 2009 at 1:00 PM

I’ve been asking about that quote since I heard Michael Wilbon use it on ESPN. I knew nobody had checked it out. And even if somehow it had been culled from something Rush had said, it would have had to have been satirical and out-of-context.

But I’m glad Rush denied it. He should sue all of them for defamation.

Moonraker. Worst Bond movie ever.

coyoterex on October 13, 2009 at 1:09 PM

Matthews is apparently invulnerable. As long as he wishes death on those evil conservatives, he’s a hero, not a hateful goon who should be headed for the unemployment line.

That said, people like him ensure that Limbaugh spends a substantial percentage of his broadcast day talking obsessively about his favorite subject: himself. Getting really tiresome there, Rush.

MrScribbler on October 13, 2009 at 1:09 PM

Matthews and Olbermann are like the gay henchmen in Diamonds are Forever.

I see your moonraker and raise you the Connery movie where he “dies” and comes back as Asian.

Every one of them laid an egg at some point, but in the scheme of things Moore was probably the second best Bond.

Connery Moore … then blah, pretty much.

They have for years. They even promoted him and Olberman during the election, and they now let Olberman talk during football.

You guys see Live and Let Die, the great Bond film with Yaphet Kotto as the bad guy, Mr. Big?

“Great Bond film”? Live and Let Die is the worst Bond film by far. Even Moore’s introduction as Bond was embarassing. Incidentally, the book ain’t half bad. It’s extremely offensive with the racial language(it was written in the early 1950′s after all), but it has two great scenes that were used in far superior Bond films: Bond being dragged along the coral reef(For Your Eyes Only) and Felix Leiter getting munched on by a shark(Licence To Kill).

lorien1973 on October 13, 2009 at 12:58 PM

Have you ever seen Moonraker? Also Timothy Dalton wasn’t a bad bond. He was a bad ass. While he may not have had the swagger of the others, he was certainly more tough than Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan (Golden Eye was awesome as a movie and as an N64 game).

IMHO, Mathews is treading on some mighty weak legal ground here. To incite someone to such action would be considered nearly the same as the completed act and if this isn’t incitement, what is??? And the entire company could be held accountable for “knowingly allowing” this idiot to take down the company at the knees.

I would suspect that the legal beagles upstairs are having a minor conniption long about now.
