Breaking: Snowe defects on committee vote

posted at 1:22 pm on October 13, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Charles Grassley predicted that the Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee would stick together on the final panel vote on the Baucus health-care overhaul plan.  Unfortunately, he didn’t reckon on colleague Olympia Snowe’s desire to make “history,” which apparently trumps fiscal responsibility and common sense.  Snowe will vote to pass the non-bill, giving Democrats some much-needed political cover:

Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe says she will vote for a Democratic health care bill, breaking with her party on President Barack Obama’s top legislative priority.

The Maine senator kept virtually all of Washington guessing how she would vote until she announced it late in the Senate Finance Committee debate Tuesday. Until then, she told reporters, she had not even let Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., in on her secret. She told her colleagues: “When history calls, history calls,” even though she had some criticism of the bill.

History?  Certainly, we don’t often see Congressional committees passing summaries instead of writing legislation, so that’s one for the history books.  We also don’t often see Congress passing trillion-dollar bills in a rush, although to be fair, they managed to do it earlier with Porkulus — a bill on which Snowe also helped make “history”.  Unfortunately, we see Snowe often crossing over on critical votes, so that’s neither history nor a surprise.

This does give Democrats momentum on the floor.  Snowe’s approving vote makes it tougher for Blanche Lincoln and Ben Nelson to buck their caucus and oppose it.  Joe Lieberman’s opposition may make that a little easier, and a negative CBO score when the language gets written may push Snowe back into opposition.  It’s more likely, though, that the CBO won’t score it in time to make a difference in the floor vote on cloture.

Blowback

Why is she still a memeber of the GOP?

At least Arlen Specter had the good graces to defect to the Demoncrat party after voting for Porkulus.

I am going to make a campaign contribution to whoever runs against her in the next election, even if it is a Democrat.

That should be the end of the so-called “fiscally-conservative yet socially-progressive Republican” fantasy.

She doesn’t claim to be conservative, unlike most GOP frauds. Being a Republican, that has no meaning.

Absolutely! Strip her of her membership, and then search far and wide for a conservative to run as a Republican.

I don’t want to suggest violence, but I think this nation is headed towards a civil war if things don’t stop. The American people can’t take a whole lot more of this.

I stopped giving money to the Republican Party and I stopped giving money to members of the Republican Party, including my own Republican representative in Congress. The one exception to this was when I sent money down to Rep. Joe Wilson as a reward for speaking out at the Joint Session. Currently I am giving all my political contributions to Glenn Beck via defendglenn.com.

Furthermore, I switched my voters registration to “Independent” from Republican permanently after a brief period as a Democrat durng Operation Chaos last year.

Get ready for the Democrats to win every future election, because millions are doing the same thing I am doing and we will never vote for another Republican (or Democrat) again.

Never, most people don’t know who this Senator from Maine is, have no idea there is a health care debate being waged, nor would they care if they did.

Congress knows the majority are clueless and they count on it.

This is why they get away with screwing us into the ground constantly.

Sad thing is this mandatory insurance clause is going to put hundreds of thousands in financial trouble as the plan is implemented. Add cap-n-tax to this and the middle class will never crawl out from under the bills.

Dims win.

FireBlogger on October 13, 2009 at 1:33 PM

They’re still a long way from passing legislation. The Bill hasn’t been drafted yet. When the CBO scores the final Bill, and it’s determined that it contains massive tax and cost increases the Democrats will never get it passed. Even if it passes, it will mean certain death for the Dems next fall because the tax increases will take effect next year. Remember Obama’s pledge during the campaign about not raising taxes on incomes under $250k. If he reneges on that promise, he’s a one term President. Maybe he should consult Bush the elder before considering raising taxes and ask him how that worked out for his re-election.

Bishop, you have it all wrong. They needed that Republican vote to get it out of committee. It was bottled up and would never have reached the floor if Snowe hadn’t changed her vote, due to the arcane committee rules which require that at least one member of the minority party must vote yes before the bill can be brought from committee to floor.
