Too good to check: Rupert Murdoch interested in buying … NBC?

posted at 6:52 pm on October 12, 2009 by Allahpundit

I’m going to say three words to you and I want you to think hard before responding: O’Reilly. Olbermann. Co-anchors.

No, I kid. Given the chairman’s opinion of Kayo, the only thing he’d be anchoring is the 2 a.m. edition of SportsCenter if ESPN took him back. Which, let’s face it, they wouldn’t.

Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp (NWSA.O) and John Malone’s Liberty Media Corp (LINTA.O) are interested in NBC Universal, according to a report by CNBC, citing sources.

Cable company Comcast Corp (CMCSA.O) has been widely reported to be in talks with NBC Universal parent General Electric Co (GE.N) to buy a controlling stake in the broadcast, cable and movie company…

News Corp, which owns the Fox cable network and local TV stations, had been seen as a less likely bidder, analysts have said, because taking a stake in NBC might raise antitrust concerns with the U.S. government.

Yeah, “might.” What are the odds that Eric Holder “might” want to prevent the administration’s cable-news house organ from being acquired by a guy whose most famous holding is the subject of now-daily White House pants-wettings?

While you mull, in honor of Anita Dunn, here’s Beck rubbing her and The One’s faces in those same soiled pants this afternoon. Cavuto got his own shots in just a few minutes earlier.

Was just reading a Foxnews.com article on the feud between Obama and Fox. Anita Dunn at the White House said:

The administration’s aggressive stance suggests that it does not view Fox’s audience as one that can be persuaded. During the presidential campaign, Ms. Dunn said, it booked campaign representatives on Fox to try to reach undecided voters, but by mid-October, the campaign had mostly withdrawn them from the channel’s programs.
“It was beyond diminishing returns,” she said. “It was no returns.”

In other words, once you learn the truth, we can’t pull the wool over your eyes anymore.

God, this just killed Keith’s buzz over the Yanks’ sweep of the Twins. Next stop, Mark Cuban’s HDnet where he can team with Dan Rather.

Though to be honest, this probably has Brian Williams, Chris Matthews, David Gregory and the other NBC News personnel reaching for their Nexium as well — while it’s possible Murdoch would keep NBC and Fox News’ divisions separate, a combined NBC/Fox really doesn’t need either two cable news channels or two separate organizations (they won’t give up the satellite space for MSNBC, but odds are it would morph more into something like that “America’s Talking” channel Ailes tried to start in the 90s when he was running CNBC).

Despite the promise of an intense high from seeing Olberman metaphorically being eaten by a T-rex and crapped out in a state of permanent irrelevance, do we really want a competant buisnessman setting up a liberal network over at NBC? It works much better for our side when they can’t keep the mask on straight.

Antitrust concerns: Buy the whole thing and sell off the cable portion. That would put New Corp in the same position that NBC is in right now, television wise.

I continue to stand in awe of Glenn Beck calling out these morons every other day. He’s just got to have a remote to start his car.

Murdoch is in it for the money. Look at the current Fox Network (not FNC) for what he would do with NBC.

If Holder tries to claim anti-trust, I’d say Murdoch has history on his side.

When Viacom merged with CBS in late 2001, they also owned UPN which, at the time, was one of the five broadcast networks before being merged with The WB to make The CW.

The only real limits to the purchase was that Viacom had to sell off some network-owned stations in several markets where the new company owned both a CBS and UPN station.

If worst comes to worst, Murdoch can say “I only wanted the cable channel and movie studio portions of the company”, like what Comcast wants out of an NBC-Universal purchase, and can say that he’ll be willing to sell off or shut down the NBC network if that is holding up the rest of the deal.

It would be interesting to see what, if any, impact Murdoch ownership would have on NBC.

Remember: Murdoch is a businessman. He’s not a Conservative activist. He seems quite fond of Obama and publicly endorsed Hillary. He wants ratings and profit. Some of the media he owns is as liberal as anything currently on MSNBC, which suggests that the political orientation of his properties is dependent on what he sees as making him the most money.
