Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on October 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

This one’s rather minor, as Obamateurisms go, but we can file it under “How many times would CNN have played this if it was a Republican President?” Veteran OOTD readers will recall that this is the reason why we started it in the first place. Barack Obama peers through a telescope at an astronomy demonstration and transforms into Captain Obvious:

“That’s pretty far away.”

Which is true of just about everything one sees through a telescope, of course, and of everything in the sky except fog.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Illustrations by Chris Muir of Day by Day. Be sure to read the adventures of Sam, Zed, Damon, and Jan every day!

over at Gateway Pundit, there is article that i have seen before about UN treaty trying to control everything that goes on in all US waterways. ponds & rivers, too.

now, as an American, why would you voluntarily give up control of all your waterways? would you think this would be kind of stupid?

President Obama’s economic and foreign policy actions make sense under two scenarios:

1) He’s an idiot.
2) He’s doing it on purpose.

BadgerHawk on October 12, 2009 at 8:16 AM

I have to say, tuning the Taliban, who just blew up another market this morning, into “Partners in Peace” might trump every choice since January.

BadgerHawk on October 12, 2009 at 8:16 AM

Hmmm, think I’m going to have to go with 1 and 2… He’s an idiot who is destroying America on purpose… But hey, keep in mind, destroying America is what he won a Nobel Peace Prize for… cause it certainly couldn’t have been for the big fat nothing he has achieved

doriangrey on October 12, 2009 at 8:21 AM

yes, i know that obama is doing it all on purpose. don’t get me wrong, there have been those in the fed govt all along that have been trying to destroy our country & strip us of freedoms. But those people now know they don’t have to hide–& they are accelerating their work.

jbh45 on October 12, 2009 at 8:25 AM

That’s pretty far away.

What we’re seeing, among other things, is a person who’s been accustomed most of his life to having every word he utters greeted with awe, for a variety of unhealthy reasons.

What was said about the late George Romney when he ran for President is much more applicable to Obama:

Deep down he’s shallow.

mr.blacksheep on October 12, 2009 at 8:36 AM

Yeah, that’s definitely not much more than a “what if Bush did it” moment, but still… those moments are very telling.

Did you see how he peered through that telescope, as if looking right into space. I’m going to go now, I must set up my altar to the great one, throw ashes over my head and strike my back with a whip. I am truly unworthy to watch the messiah look through a telescope.

Hence the need for a telescope, you genius.

mizflame98 on October 12, 2009 at 8:47 AM

Perhaps he was looking at Russia, which some people can see from right out of their window.

:)

Shy Guy on October 12, 2009 at 8:49 AM

When I was a young child, Knox College (Galesburg, IL) had an observatory. My mother took me there once and I got the chance to see Saturn through their telescope. I remember being in awe of seeing that distant planet, rings and all, in real time. I don’t remember thinking or saying “that’s pretty far away”. At seven I already knew it.
Still, I’m glad our president has the intellectual curiosity of a second grader. It shows there are still a couple functioning neurons between those great, floppy ears. Too bad for us that his job requires more than that.

rob verdi on October 12, 2009 at 8:16 AM

Agreed. On the other hand, in fairness we have to remember that Obama sought partnership with the “moderate” part of the Taliban. Maybe that’s what he was looking for through the telescope.

doriangrey on October 12, 2009 at 9:03 AM

Astronomers aren’t very well organized. They don’t have a highest award for the world. However, perhaps Barry could receive next year’s highest honor from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific: The Catherine Wolfe Bruce Gold Medal, awarded since 1898 for a lifetime of outstanding research in astronomy.

After all, even though Barry was only at the telescope for a moment, every moment that Barry is president, it’s like my whole life passes before my eyes.

And Barry was born in Hawaii, which is in the Pacfic.

And Barry doesn’t know anything about tronomy.

And if you take the tronomy out of astronomy, what do you get?

See?

It perfect for him.

Loxodonta on October 12, 2009 at 9:20 AM

Maybe Obooba can read this through that eyeglass thingy, and find out what the racists at La Republica think of his acquisition of a Nobel Peace Prize.

You needn’t read Italian to LOL at these gems!

Dingbat63 on October 12, 2009 at 9:24 AM

It all depends on which end of the telescope you look through.

Because Teh One doesn’t think of himself as an American. He thinks we should be global citizens, with every country equal to the others.

You have to remember, to Little Barry Dunham everything outside of his ‘experience’ didn’t exist before 1/20/2009. The IDEA of planets was a new experience for the ‘Won’. After all, it was his Muslim heritage the brought us math and telescopes, right Barry?

Blacksmith8 on October 12, 2009 at 11:30 AM

He would have looked smarter if he had asked at what he was looking. Very few people actually understand what they are seeing through a telescope.

Inquisitiveness is a sign of intelligence. Obama apparently knows everything so no need to ever ask questions.

I’d say this qualifies as an Obamateurism hands down.
