Hillary: No, no, no, I’m not running again

posted at 9:00 pm on October 12, 2009 by Allahpundit

Dude, she’s totally running — albeit certainly not in 2012 as an upstart challenger to The One. She’s too good of a soldier to do that, per her diving headfirst into the tank here to defend his Nobel win. I’m intrigued by her guarantee that the final decision on Afghanistan will be well thought through, though. Even assuming that that’s true, why wasn’t it well thought through when Obama replaced McKiernan with McChrystal earlier this year? That’s no idle gotcha question, as Robert Kaplan explains:

The Administration had many months, beginning the moment Obama was elected, to recalibrate Afghan strategy. Yet it’s now in the position of publicly questioning the fundamental wisdom of the general it has chosen. The position Obama’s now in is similar to that of former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld some years back—appearing not to be listening to his generals. If the president doesn’t agree with his field commander, that’s fine. Just don’t make a public spectacle of it.

Even if Obama does end up making the correct decision on Afghanistan strategy (by which I mean adding troops, since counterinsurgency is manpower-intensive), the public agony over his deliberations may already have done incalculable damage. The Afghan people have survived three decades of war by hedging their bets. Now, watching a young and inexperienced American president appear to waiver on his commitment to their country, they are deciding, at the level of both the individual and the mass, whether to make their peace with the Taliban—even as the Taliban itself can only take solace and encouragement from Obama’s public agonizing. Meanwhile, fundamentalist elements of the Pakistani military, opposed to the recent crackdown against local Taliban, are also taking heart from developments in Washington. This is how coups and revolutions get started, by the middle ranks sensing weakness in foreign support for their superiors.

Obama’s wobbliness also has a corrosive effect on the Indians and the Iranians. India desperately needs a relatively secular Afghan regime in place to bolster Hindu India’s geopolitical position against radical Islamdom, and while the country enjoyed an excellent relationship with bush, Obama’s dithering is making it nervous. And Iran, in observing Washington’s indecision, can only feel more secure in its creeping economic annexation of western Afghanistan.

I’m not blaming her for The One’s dithering — there’s little doubt what President Hillary would have decided to do in Afghanistan — but the “we want to get this right” excuse doesn’t have an indefinite shelf life. How much longer do we have to wait? Meanwhile, in WaPo, Fareed Zakaria takes his best shot against a troop build-up by arguing that we’ve actually done a great job in Afghanistan thus far, and if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Which is super, except that the overwhelming sense from media reports is that U.S. troops in the field are simply trying to hold back a rising Taliban tide until reinforcements come. Which, if true, prompts the question: If the reinforcements aren’t coming, why do we still have men there trying to hold back the tide?

I think this all depends on how Obama looks at the end of this term. If he looks damaged, I’d bet she seriously considers a run.

Anyone who thinks she wants to retire soon has not been paying attention. The Clintons will be active in politics until they breath their last breath.

My guess: Hillary’s team is collecting dirt and payback for the appropriate time. She’s doing her SecState job for foreign policy cred, experience, and contacts all the while keeping her distance from the train wreck Obama team.

Are you serious? Why should she run? Because she might be the first American Female President. Because she might be remembered for being that and not the wife of an impeached President whose impeachment was the result of lying about an extramarital affair. Because her marriage may have been a disaster and now she needs something tangable. Because she was robbed of the nomination to begin with. Because really when you think about it, that is all she has.

Besides, the Clintons have a history of saying one thing and doing another.

LOL-I still cannot believe she accepted her post at Foggy Bottom in the first place.

Dave R. on October 12, 2009 at 9:32 PM

They are keeping her around for one reason and one reason only. She is Sarah Palin insurance.

If Palin looks like she’s going to the GOP nomination in 2012 then she’s perfectly positioned to have Biden retire and have HER move into the VP slot to lock up the “female” vote (as she would have more “experience” than the “quitter” Palin). Or the Progressive Cancer could have her picked out as a backup plan in case BHO implodes. That way they can trot her out again to battle Palin and they can still have someone to do the Progressives bidding.

Hey……just guessin’ here.

PappyD61 on October 12, 2009 at 9:32 PM

Obama will soon descend into the toilet via the Clinton Machine. Why? Because Thunder Thighs will NOT allow Sarah become the first woman President of the United States. Tough titty, Hillary. Everybody (female, male, white, black, hispanic, liberal, conservative) I talk with can’t wait for Sarah.

Even if Obama does end up making the correct decision on Afghanistan strategy (by which I mean adding troops, since counterinsurgency is manpower-intensive)

This Blog was started with a very narrow focus and that was elevating the conversation about the ROE as it is presently in Afghanistan and using it as a launching point for further conversations with our Legislators. I think it is obvious to everyone that the ROE is just an outgrowth of a larger more ominous problem and that is the current administration’s vision for future operations in Afghanistan. A single strategy COIN (counterinsurgency) doctrine is now in full play there and it only needs the blessing of the President to keep it that way. While some elements of COIN may need to be employed as this war progresses, it is short-sighted to believe it is the single way to win. We have a very small window of opportunity to speak to our congressional delegates and effect the change that is necessary to move away from COIN and back to the more critical ‘chase and kill’ strategy.

The enemy is insidious and single-minded in his mission and we must be equally intent in our resolve to meet them on a battlefield of our choosing. Theirs is to kill all apostates and unbelievers and ours needs to be in kind. Short of that and we will find ourselves on the wrong side of this fight when history is written.

The story of the United States Mosque building efforts is not brand new. This has been going on for a long time and is probably couched in the language of war reparations. The problem is; the war is not over and, the enemy has been using these mosques, regularly, from which to launch attacks on our Warriors. I won’t go into the apparent conflict with the 1st amendment of the US Constitution here although there is much to talk about. The more glaring problem is that we are building hardened bulwarks from which the enemy can launch attacks on our troops. Have we lost all understanding of how to wage war? You don’t build emplacements for the enemy, you destroy everything they can use and deny them ground.

General McChrystal has bought into the argument that there are those in the Islamic culture of Afghanistan that want what we have and need and want our help. He is wrong, and, to quote yet another scripture, ‘he has left his first love.’(stolen from Rev 2:45 describing the cold heartedness of the Ephesians to the Church) has been telling us that his real concern is for the safety and well-being of another people at great cost to his own. The General’s first responsibility is to his oath as it is for all sworn and elected officials. He has determined that the protection of a foreign entity, be they friendly or not (I dare say the events of the past several weeks say, not) is far more important than the lives of the Americans fighting in that foreign land.

The General is flirting with treason as defined as an act of disloyalty toward the sovereignty of this nation. Willful destruction of the uniformed forces of this nation certainly seems to qualify. This is a question for Constitutional lawyers and history however. Looking at the successes and failures to judge this new strategy is a far more valuable use of time. Remembering that closer one on one involvement with the Afghan people and the ANA and ANP is the center piece of his new strategy, it only makes sense to use recent events as a gauge of success. There has been an uptick in the number of treacherous acts by Afghans working closely with Americans since the General hit the ground in June 2009. These don’t appear to be a problem for him though. He is still selling his tripe.

AP,
Ummmm… i dont understand why you have not addressed the elephant in the room… the black vote.

Lets imagine for a second that Hillary does decide to run for a second term because Obama is badly hurt in the polls… does any one think that the black community will let the first black President lose ?

Obama consistently lost the white vote in the primaries – do you people forget all that ? The single biggest reason he won the primaries was his overwhelming victory among black people.. he kept the white voter losses close..

No Democrat is dumb enough to challenge the first Black President. Period.

In 2016, Hillary will be 68 and thinking about how she blew it 8 years back thanks to an overpaid huckster who was her poll adviser.

London: Clinton will meet with senior British officials to discuss important issues such as Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.

Dublin, Ireland: She will reaffirm the United States’ commitment to Ireland during meetings with senior Irish officials.

Belfast, Northern Ireland: Clinton will emphasize the United States’ support for political progress and economic recovery in the area.

Moscow: As part of her efforts to reset relations with Russia, she’ll meet with President Dmitry Medvedev and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to discuss a successor agreement to START, the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty. They’ll also discuss Afghanistan, Iran, the Middle East, and North Korea.

Kazan, Russia: Clinton will visit Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, to talk with local officials and religious leaders about promoting tolerance and interfaith dialogue. The city has a large Muslim population, and yesterday, in this clumsy exchange, State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said Kazan “really shows that the Russian Federation is a multiethnic country.”

You know she wants to run in 2012, but she probably realizes she can’t win. The only way she secures the nomination is if Obama is such a disaster that he either loses in the primaries or pulls an LBJ and bails. But why would any sensible Dem wanna be the sacrificial lamb in that general election when the GOP easily take back the White House?

And the problem with waiting til 2016 is that she’ll be 68. Granted that’s not as old as McCain or Dole and even Reagan won 2 elections at an older age, but there’s a double standard when it comes to female politicians.

I am not a Hillary fan, but I must say that she did quite well when she interviewed with BOR. She can work the audience and can apeal to the FOX audience. I can see her winning people over. The gays love her. She is not Bill and they know it. His affairs can only help her.

bloggless on October 12, 2009 at 9:43 PM

By then though, Sarah will be a tsunamit of Reaganism at a time when that is what the country is looking for.

Hillary will gamble on 2016 is my guess.

Sapwolf on October 12, 2009 at 10:12 PM

what more would she prove by running for President?

She wants it…oh my gawd does she want it…becoming President is what she’s been working toward for her entire adult life. I don’t care how old she is – she wants the White House for herself. Period.

uncivilized on October 12, 2009 at 10:15 PM

Good grief, people, SHE IS NOT RUNNING in 2012! She cannot primary Obama, as she automatically risks losing the AA vote and that’s a huge voting bloc for the primaries. The AA’s stick with Obama and cast a suspicious eye on Hillary if she primaries him.

Then, you have the progressive left who despises her for her centrist views (in their minds). They are not going to vote for her in the primaries; they’d rather not show up than cast a vote for Hillary or Obama.

She knows that she can’t get two important voting blocs on her side in 2012 and she sure as heck isn’t going to waste more money chasing an illusive dream.

If you truly think AA’s will abandon Obama and the progressive left that declared war on her in 2008 will all of the sudden vote for her, you’re delusional.

yogi41 on October 12, 2009 at 10:15 PM

She’ll run as an alternate as soon as it becomes apparent that Barry’s chances of a second term are non-existent and none.

GarandFan on October 12, 2009 at 10:16 PM

She does want it more than anything. But she can not do it in 2012 unless Obama does the best thing and resigns.
I’m sure that she wants to be president in 2012 but I’m sure she won’t even try it with Obama in the way.

ORconservative on October 12, 2009 at 10:22 PM

She has to play good soldier and follow the one’s orders. Until his ship really starts to sink then the fangs and claws come out

Hasn’t his ship already started to sink??? Just asking….

Never, ever underestimate a Clinton’s ability to gather and disseminate as much dirt as possible on a potential enemy. She knows where the bodies are buried – and if there aren’t any bodies, she knows who to call to get some. The one thing I can say about Billy Jeff and his bride…they lie, they cheat, they’re total thugs – but they’re very, very good at it.
I promise you, she’s taking notes on ol’ Barry. If she wanted to run in 2012, she’d know exactly where his vulnerabilities were, and how to exploit them to her advantage. I would put nothing, at all, past her.

The leftards are in love with Obama and his wife. They would rather watch them fail than watch Hillary and her ugly husband achieve something for liberalism.

When was the last time she was in Kabul? The State Department has someone in Kabul -Who? Is this going to be another imperial life in the emerald city? Do we have the experienced and competent or the loyal and willing in Kabul? It does make a difference.

Dr Evil on October 12, 2009 at 10:24 PM

Oh, there are bodies and my guess is that she knows about every one of them.
The problem is that Obama plays dirtier than the Clintons.

Hillary retire?

Suggestion: go over to Ace’s and read the eel story. Hillary will retire a bit less gracefully than that eel. Okay, a lot less gracefully.

This is all Bush’s fault.

Del Dolemonte on October 12, 2009 at 10:36 PM

I can hear the interview questions with the old bat now:

Hillary, didn’t you write your thesis on Saul Alinsky, a man you looked up to and thought was a political genius?

Hillary, don’t you think that shouting at the audience of bewildered Kenyans embarrassed the United States?

Hillary, why did you agree to go to work for a man who hates this country and everything it stands for? Further, how could you whore yourself out to further his traitorous agenda?

Hillary, how could you ever live down giving the Russians a button you thought said “reset”?

Hillary, how could you fail to support a democractically elected president in Honduras over his thug predecessor?

Hillary, how could you have failed to let your boss sanction Iranians getting slaughtered in the street while they fought a tyrannical regime?

Hillary, will you cry again when the poll numbers don’t look good in future elections?

Hillary, with all the millions you and Bill made off with and made through the WH, how come you haven’t had lipo to suck out those cankles?

Dirt on Obama is NOT going to make AA’s turn from him; they’re with him until the end. In fact, if Hillary or her surrogates even tried to filter dirt on him, they’d be the first ones suspected and the AA community will turn on her. It’s exactly what happened in 2008. DO NOT underestimate Obama’s ability to make the fight even dirtier.

And if you think dirt on Obama will cause the progressive left to vote for Hillary, you’re wrong. They just won’t show up to vote. Check out the progressive blogs; they HATE the Clintons, Hillary in particular. Right now, they hate Obama, too, but these are principled activists who aren’t going to vote for an insider and Hillary, to them, is the ultimate insider.

Hillary is shrewd. She’s been in battle with Obama and she knows first-hand how dirty he and his surrogates play the game. She finally ran into someone who plays dirtier than the Clinton’s.

Nah, she’s not running in 2012 and I highly doubt she’ll run in 2016. Perhaps one day she’ll run for Governor, but I think she retires as SOS.

yogi41 on October 12, 2009 at 10:37 PM

Because she might be remembered for being that and not the wife of an impeached President whose impeachment was the result of lying about an extramarital affair.

I thought that her unbelievably embarrassing ‘reset’ idiocy, displayed so publicly in front of the whole world, did that. I still can’t believe it. I never had much respect for her intellect (though that “Primary Colors” movie painted a picture of a very competent, if twisted, thinker) but that ‘reset’ fiasco just blew me away. That was even dumber than most of the things The Precedent has done, which is no mean feat. A little nostalgia:

GENEVA, March 6 (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton presented Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov with a red “reset button” to symbolise improved ties, but the gift drew smiles as the word “reset” was mistranslated into the Russian for “overcharge”.

“I would like to present you with a little gift that represents what President Obama and Vice President Biden and I have been saying and that is: ‘We want to reset our relationship and so we will do it together,” said Clinton, presenting Lavrov with a palm-sized yellow box with a red button.

Clinton joked to Lavrov: “We worked hard to get the right Russian word. Do you think we got it?”

“You got it wrong,” said Lavrov, smiling as the two pushed the reset button together before dinner at a Geneva hotel.

He told Clinton the word “Peregruzka” meant “overcharge”, to which Clinton replied: “We won’t let you do that to us.”

I still laugh whenever I read that. The whole friggin’ State Department. …

I think she’s trying to escape from the ‘reset’ moment, now (imagine the ads you would run – the sniper dodging and the ‘reset’).

Shrillary is toast, but she’s just dumb enough to run again, anyway.

progressoverpeace on October 12, 2009 at 11:39 PM

Dude, she’s totally running — albeit certainly not in 2012…

I don’t know. Jimmy Carter was such a fuck-up that his approval ratings were in the mid-20s in late 1979, before the Iran hostage situation. Ted Kennedy announced his candidacy in November.

jaime on October 13, 2009 at 4:41 AM

Why would she run? The same DNC elitists that brought the “glass ceiling” down on her head the last time won’t let her interfere with their real Socialist agenda.

They’re impatient and were over the Clintoons long ago.

Dr. ZhivBlago on October 13, 2009 at 5:45 AM

The real answer will be visible when Hill’s gets a frame-off, whole body restoration to present a “fresh and bright” package. This could take a while……..

joe btfsplk on October 13, 2009 at 6:29 AM

We’ll know if this empty pantsuit will be running for president in 2012 easily enough: if she resigns as secretary of state early in 2011. If she perceives Obama to be vulnerable in 2012, she’ll go for it. It’s her only remaining chance, she’ll be nearly 70 in 2016. The Democratic Party? She’ll say she’s running to “save it”. She’s the guest that wouldn’t leave. Cackle, cackle, cackle. “Look out! Snipers!”

bradley11 on October 13, 2009 at 6:56 AM

This is a small thing, but it really bugs me. The media keep using the word “troop” when talking about men being killed, not the word soldier.
It is done on purpose, they aren’t “troops” troops are groups of men, a unit.
So when they say several troops were killed, they are actually saying 30, 40, 60 men? No they are trying not to say “soldiers” or “men”, they are de-humanizing the loss.
MSM…..troops are groups of soldiers as a unit, of maybe ten or so, like a patrol.
