Quotes of the day

posted at 9:40 pm on October 11, 2009 by Allahpundit

“In an e-mail to the union’s executive committee on Saturday specifically addressing Limbaugh’s bid, Smith said, ‘I’ve spoken to the Commissioner [Roger Goodell] and I understand that this ownership consideration is in the early stages. But sport in America is at its best when it unifies, gives all of us reason to cheer, and when it transcends. Our sport does exactly that when it overcomes division and rejects discrimination and hatred.’…

‘I have asked our players to embrace their roles not only in the game of football but also as players and partners in the business of the NFL,’ said Smith in the e-mail. ‘They risk everything to play this game, they understand that risk and they live with that risk and its consequences for the rest of their life. We also know that there is an ugly part of history and we will not risk going backwards, giving up, giving in or lying down to it.’”

So this Smith guy wants to discriminate against Rush because he disagrees with his politics? Can he not smell the irony?

If I am not mistaken, the EEOC has designated creed as a protected class (along with age, race, gender and religion). Since the definition of creed is a system of belief, principles, or opinions…wouldn’t Rush be “protected” from Mr. Smith’s discrimination? I’m just asking, cuz I’m not a lawyer.

When Rush made the McNabb comments, I believe the Eagles were 0-3 or something. McNabb -was- playing awful. The media was trying to blame everyone but McNabb. I believe McNabb was benched in that season (or had an injury or something). Rush was right about McNabb and how the media coddled him.

lorien1973 on October 11, 2009 at 11:51 PM

Not only that, but go back and look at a clip of the incident in queation. Michael Irvin (certified black enough to criticize) was in total agreement with Rush, TOTAL! Watch it and let me know what you think especially when he said “right, right *chuckle*”

I think it’ll be much, much worse than that. We’ll be shooting each other as one tries to steal from another just to survive in between shooting the invading armies from the south and west. No electricity. Grow and kill your own munchies. Obama, congress, and the senate will either be deep in hiding or all long dead. 2/3 of our military will be stuck in foreign lands and the remainder here will be outnumbered and ill supplied.

This is all before the 2nd year of his 2nd term if that happens. My policy as of Nov.2012 will be: Trespassers will be violated, no excuses.

Do the libs want to politicize everything? One reason I enjoy sports is that it is a break from politics for awhile. One of the most satisfying scenes is when a politician, from either party, is booed for trying to use the appearance at a sporting event for their own partisan purpose.

This Smith from the union needs to go back to figuring out how to embezzle members’ dues and leave sports issues alone.

Why the hell would Rush want to invest in the National Felons League? Of course they don’t want him. It’s a motley crew of wife beaters, dog killers, drug dealers, rapists, and overpaid unionists.

Rush, don’t invest one penny in those clowns.

Mr. Wednesday Night on October 12, 2009 at 12:26 AM

This should be fun! Popcorn time even. If there is one thing the NFL owners love, it’s others trying to tell them how to run their 32 man little club. If they are inclined to let Rush, a man who genuinely loves the game, join their little club this crap will simply stiffen their resolve to do so.

What do these players want? A fan boycott?

Right now, football is the preferred American sport.

Baseball and Hockey both took hits from player scorn

Both now make money, but they lost a lot in the process. The general interest in these games is diminished. The hard core fans follow intently but there is no longer enough connection to the players to even start a conversation on these sports where it used to be an everyday subject, like the weather and what’s to eat

When I read the bigoted remarks targeting Rush, they are targeting me too, because I like Rush. I listen to him a lot. I find many of his callers are people I would love to know better. They also speak for me and contribute many great ideas to the conversations of the day

I prefer football but I can live without it. It’s funny how they jump on Rush, because Rush would be a great owner. He loves the sport and idolizes the sacrifices of the players. He’s a good guy.

However, Obama has let everyone know Rush is a bad guy. What a great President. Obama has said more against Rush, by name, than he has said against Osama bin Laden.

If I want to go see a football game I go and see one of my local high school teams games.

If I want to see a baseball game I go watch the local little league team play.

You see a better game with a better atmosphere and the kids appreciate folks coming out to watch them. The money they make off of concessions goes to help buy equipment for the kids, pay for their transportation to ‘away’ games and maintain the parks they play in.

ICAM. Although I’m not much of a sports fan, I feel the same way when I’m sitting down to unwind with a mindless soap opera or some other TV show and I’m all of a sudden bombarded with less-than-subliminal hopenchange PSA. It’s not enough we have to see him all over the news 24/7, or be preached to by libs in our actual lives about the inevitable environmental apocalypse, or how the United States is nation-building in the Middle East. Now I have to hear about it from a bunch of fictional characters as well?

Entertainment and sports should be just that: entertainment and sports. Politicizing them really takes the enjoyment out of it all, AND pretty much guarantees you’ll alienate at least half your audience.

NFL Players executive director DeMaurice Smith on Saturday made a move to solidify the union against a bid by conservative talk show radio host Rush Limbaugh as part of a group that aims to purchase the St. Louis Rams.

Yo ‘Maurice!

If elRushbo is as smart as I think he is, he’ll be opting out of the St. Louis franchise deal, and buy-up the Jax Jaguars from Wayne Weaver — especially after the whuppin the Seahawks put on the Jags (41-zip) today, those pussycats should be ready for the firesale.

‘Course there is also the problem that nobody goes to the Jags home games anymore– but, Rus’d fix dat! And, since Limbaugh is a card-carrying Floridian nowadays, he should invest in the state where he votes n’ waxes poetic o’er the EIB golden microphone. Shoot, all the lovable fuzzball has to do on game day, is sit in his SkyBox Al Davis style and wave to his fans!

The NFL today though, seems sick to its marrow, full of overpaid primadonnas, thugs, and drama queens — and the fans in the stands are worse! Who in their rightmind, would spend $500 bucks to take their family to experience that mess?

Personally, I enjoy college ball more, the tradition, and kids with a heart like Tim Tebot! And that Reminds me, its Homecoming this week in the swamp, and they’ll be Hog’s slop all up and down University and 13th, and no telling what low-life will come crawling outta Joe’s Deli! Maybe I’d better leave the wife and kids home this weekend…Go Gators!

You mean a sport that for years has been the subject of talk of whether a black QB could be successful?

While he would have been better off to take that conversation elsewhere the reality is that the NFL has its problems with race.

One of Rush’s good friends is a black former NFL lineman who is a Preacher in a Western State. Rush has him give his NFL analysis on the program from time to time. I would mention Snerdly also, but our Trolls go crazy and run him into the groud whenever he’s mentioned around here. Fox News/Sports should definitely hire Stephen A. Smith.

kingsjester on October 11, 2009 at 10:47 PM

Ken Hutcherson. (Cowboys, Chargers, Seahawks.) He and Rush have vacationed together and Rush obviously thinks a lot of him. I REALLY don’t think Hutch thinks Rush is a racist…and Hutch knows a racist when he sees one.

It’s just another leftist lie. Same as it ever was.

A few years back a black man killed a cop in this area (Seattle); he was naked and probably very high on something – the cop hesitated and didn’t shoot the man (probably saw he wasn’t armed), and the perp took the cop’s gun, shot, and killed him.

Hutch was on the radio talking about what a horrible crime it was, and I heard a liberal call up and spew some of the meanest, most vile garbage at him you could imagine. You could just hear the venom, the hate it this guy’s voice. Hutch wasn’t doing what he was supposed to do in the liberal playbook – he was condemning the murder of a cop by a minority. Hutch never fired back – he just stayed calm, steady – it was really something. I think I would have hit the guy myself if I’d been anywhere near him, but Hutch just absorbed it.

He’s an amazing guy, imo. It’s no wonder to me Rush likes him so much.

Smith is no liberal..not so long ago I think he got quote of the day of something like it for complaining about liberals..

I have a friend who is a conservative and he does not think someone like Rush should buy the Rams because of his public position. I don’t really get it, but he seems to think that it will somehow effect the team in terms of contract negotiations and stuff like that. Whatever, who cares?

I know I don’t.

Jeff from WI on October 12, 2009 at 8:58 AM

If Rush has any business smarts, he’ll avoid the Rams like the plague. He is very astute when it comes to the radio business, but owning that franchise will be a money pit. Passionate about the game or not, NO ONE likes to lose money.

RepubChica on October 12, 2009 at 9:16 AM

FWIW –
At the end of the day, if Rush does purchase the Rams…the players will play football. It’s their job, and they get paid incredibly well do do so. Recruiting will go on as usual…and fans will go to games.
I have no idea who owns the teams I watch on Sunday, nor do I care. After the ruckus dies down, the same will hold true for the Rams. Either you’re a Rams fan, and you’ll go to the games, watch them on TV, buy their merchandise, etc., or you aren’t and won’t.

Darksean on October 12, 2009 at 10:32 AM

he is racist, for 2 reasons they say…

1. He said General Collen Powell voted for Obama just because he is black. – Gen Powell is a republican, and has never voted democrat before. He also never once in his history supported the democrats agenda. Also, he always claims we need a moderate on the republican side – which John McCain was the most moderate person in the senate. John McCain is the ideal candidate that Powell has wanted for 30 years. Yet, magically, the most left wing partisan democrat in history, whom is black, runs for office, and Powell supports him? What else could it be? he magically become a democrat? did he renounce his R? No, he is still a republican, but voted for Obama 100% cause of the color of his skin. Its okay to vote FOR him cause his skin color, but it should be illegal to voted AGAINST him for his skin color. Both are equally stupid and racist.

2) He said McNabb is a overrated QB and the media loves him just because he is black. Also he says, you can not criticize him cause if you do you are a racist. – Well, McNabb’s numbers don’t lie, he is a mediocre QB with less numbers than Tony Romo. Rush called him out on this, and guess what? he was called a racist. Even thought many black poeple agreed (M. Irvin) they still could not miss a chance to call Rush a racist. They could not argue Rush’s argument, on either case so they call him a racist…. typical.

Donut on October 12, 2009 at 10:49 AM

Its really ridiculous… the league celebrates vehicular manslaugterer Donte Stallworth and Vile dog killer Michael Vick, but they wring their hands over the potential “discriminations” of radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh. Really cracks me up.

TonyR on October 12, 2009 at 11:04 AM

Michael Irvin wasn’t the only one that said Rush was right. McNabb, himself, admitted Rush was right. He credited Rush with helping him to see that he needed to get better.

BetseyRoss on October 12, 2009 at 11:07 AM

No matter how much I respect and admire Rush I could never be a Rams fan. But it’s his money to spend in any way that makes him happy and he certainly doesn’t need my advice. It would be interesting to see if he would be a hands-off owner. I suspect he would pick his generals well and let them run the army. Good luck, Rush.

SKYFOX on October 12, 2009 at 11:15 AM

I’m sure there are a lot of NFL lovers on HA but do not count me as one of them. I grew up in Columbus, OH, where the water runs scarlet and grey and I could live the rest of my life happily if the NFL was disbanded. Sure there are some great guys playing and maybe an admirable organization or two but as a whole – ignorant, greedy thugs. I know this sounds harsh but remember, my NFL team was the Cleveland Browns with Art Modell, one of the worst examples of greed and thuggery ever.

Why Limbaugh is so enamored of the NFL I will never understand but he did have the Steelers.

gopmom on October 12, 2009 at 11:30 AM

I doubt the other owners would care for the prospect of Limbaugh flogging his team from his bully pulpit.

starfleet_dude on October 12, 2009 at 10:16 AM

Bwahaha!

Do you even watch professional football? For goodness sake, the league already flogs certain teams — and players — off on the fans. Ever notice which teams get the most network coverage, MNF games, Sunday night and Thursday games? Ever heard of an inadequate gimmick QB named Michael Vick? How about an old geezer named Brett Favre?

If MLB could handle the Cubs being owned by the Tribune and the Braves being owned by Ted Turner, I think the NFL can cope with Rush Limbaugh owning the Rams.

Y-not on October 12, 2009 at 11:30 AM

I grew up in Columbus, OH, where the water runs scarlet and grey and I could live the rest of my life happily if the NFL was disbanded.

gopmom,

Do you really think that a school like Ohio State would spend so many resources on a college football program if it were not for the NFL? Big football schools are essentially minor leagues for the pros. If the NFL evaporated, so would those big programs. They’d be no more than club sports or minor programs like the Ivies have.

Y-not on October 12, 2009 at 11:34 AM

The NFL doesn’t need the baggage Limbaugh brings with him, and I doubt the other owners would care for the prospect of Limbaugh flogging his team from his bully pulpit.

starfleet_dude on October 12, 2009 at 10:16 AM

I’d think if the NFL owners can put up with the clowns that own the Cowboys or Raiders, they can put up with anything.

Jeff from WI on October 12, 2009 at 11:36 AM

Rush’s lawyers are going to be busy. Sounds like discrimination if he is held back from making an honest bid for an American business.

I don’t recall exactly what he said about McNabb other than it was possibly insensitive but I have listened to hundreds of hours of Rush over the past 20 years and cannot label him a racist.

FireBlogger on October 12, 2009 at 11:39 AM

How about an old geezer named Brett Favre?

Yeah, I’ve heard of him. Currently the #3 rated QB in the NFL, I believe. I don’t think Favre has the deep arm he used to have, but he can still bring it.

starfleet_dude on October 12, 2009 at 11:40 AM

Stephen A. Smith = nail, head, hammer, hit…

Name them…

The only player I can figure that has a beef with Rush personally might be Donovan McNabb for the “black quarterback” stick a few years ago.

Puh-leeze, we can have a convicted felon as a QB (Vick) but Rush is too contreversial to hold a small stake in a team?

JohnBG on October 12, 2009 at 12:19 PM

So this Smith guy wants to discriminate against Rush because he disagrees with his politics? Can he not smell the irony?

ummm I’m sure others have already corrected this but Stephen A Smith agrees with Rush’ politics as Mark Levin highlighted

PunditFight on October 12, 2009 at 6:39 AM

From the article referenced:

NFL Players executive director DeMaurice Smith on Saturday made a move to solidify the union against a bid by conservative talk show radio host Rush Limbaugh as part of a group that aims to purchase the St. Louis Rams.

It is unfortunate that both gentlemen in this post have the last name of Smith, but it is not really that difficult understand if one pays attention. Step away from the manufactured outrageous outrage for a while and try not to be so sloppy with the facts.

Tom_OC on October 12, 2009 at 12:28 PM

It’s just the fear that Rush will be a major factor in making the players union a worthless entity.

It is extremely sad that Obama would use surrogates in the NFL Players Union for his personal vendetta against Rush Limbaugh.

Rush has the money, the business sense and a personal passion for the game.

This is just one more example that Union leaders (be it UAW, AFL/CIO, the Teachers’ Union or the NFL Players Union) are more committed to advancing the interests of their political masters than they are to advance the interests of their members.

Ann Coulter as General Manager and I’m for it.

In my mind it is Ann Coulter in a cheerleader outfit.

If I am not mistaken, the EEOC has designated creed as a protected class (along with age, race, gender and religion). Since the definition of creed is a system of belief, principles, or opinions…wouldn’t Rush be “protected” from Mr. Smith’s discrimination? I’m just asking, cuz I’m not a lawyer.

ramrants on October 11, 2009 at 11:56 PM

If you’ll watch the video, you’ll realize that Steven A. Smith has no problem with Rush owning the team. There was no discrimination here, and you obviously didn’t watch the video.

OT: Just saw that the Cubs filed for chapter 11.

Yes, Stephen A. Smith in the video says that if Rush has the money, he should be able to buy the Rams.

However, if you click on the link in the text (not the video) you will find that the person who spoke out against Rush buying the Rams is NFL Players executive director DeMaurice Smith.

Ordinary American on October 12, 2009 at 2:01 PM

It is one of the few things left in America that unites all of us and for that reason, no politically active person should be an owner or involved in any meaningful way with any pro sports team.

TheBigOldDog on October 11, 2009 at 9:52 PM

This is of course a dangerous notion. There are only two criteria which can be morally applied to a business transaction. Ability and desire.

Just had several days of the racist crap on my website… to those I answer and my standard answer going forward:

I have a dream, a dream where men of all colors may stand side by side in friendship or face to face as opponents without the specter of color. I dream of a time when blacks and white will be allowed to succeed or fail on their own merits and without believing them as incapable handling either outcome. I dream of a time when the chains of our past will be cast aside so that all men may truly be free and not coddled and treated as unable to stand on their own. Until we allow him to stand on his own, fight on his own, succeed on his own and fail on his own, the black man, or ANY man, will NEVER be free. To those of you that continue to try and keep him down, I say, please FREE the black man and give him his rightful place at our side as equals.

That the most powerful freely elected man in the world, cannot be questioned on his polices or philosophy, literally or satirically, without the only response being charges of racism, is really quite telling and pitiful, so very pitiful. To those I say, free OUR President, FREE OUR PRESIDENT!

The “irony” is that if Barack Obama is reelected in 2012 and the dems keep their majorities in Congress we will probably all be living on a plantation.

MB4 on October 12, 2009 at 12:02 AM

Plantation? Isn’t that Arabic for “where we put all the dhimmis”?

davidk on October 12, 2009 at 3:28 PM

When Rush made the McNabb comments, I believe the Eagles were 0-3 or something. McNabb -was- playing awful. The media was trying to blame everyone but McNabb. I believe McNabb was benched in that season (or had an injury or something). Rush was right about McNabb and how the media coddled him.

True, McNabb was just another struggling young quarterback, destined for eventual failure. Rush was correct in saying that the only reason McNabb played was because the NFL was ‘desirous’ to have a black quarterback. And, yes, the media was part of the plot to see a black quarterback play in the NFL, despite McNabb’s clear lack of talent.

Good call Rush. Right on the money.

Question: How long before the NFL becomes the “Nationalized Football League”?

Ordinary American on October 12, 2009 at 3:41 PM

It is ok for you thee, but not for me… I just love the Libs, they r surely wonderful people and rally know how to run the WORLD and the NFL, please, do not let RUSH buy any team as this will make the U.S. a better place. You Ash holes.

Did “u” write that on your cell phone or something? Well, thanks for the well-reasoned argument anyhow.

Ordinary American on October 12, 2009 at 1:25 PM

Is this a fact that Obama is the cause of this? Rush said this morning that Sharpton is involving himself in this. Not surprising, since he is a media whore.

silvernana on October 12, 2009 at 4:58 PM

Condoleezza Rice is a big football fan and has expressed an interest in owning a team and even being NFL Commissioner. If Rush go halfsies with Condi on the Rams, how many race-baiters’ heads do you think will explode?
