Quotes of the day
posted at 9:40 pm on October 11, 2009 by Allahpundit
“In an e-mail to the union’s executive committee on Saturday specifically addressing Limbaugh’s bid, Smith said, ‘I’ve spoken to the Commissioner [Roger Goodell] and I understand that this ownership consideration is in the early stages. But sport in America is at its best when it unifies, gives all of us reason to cheer, and when it transcends. Our sport does exactly that when it overcomes division and rejects discrimination and hatred.’…
‘I have asked our players to embrace their roles not only in the game of football but also as players and partners in the business of the NFL,’ said Smith in the e-mail. ‘They risk everything to play this game, they understand that risk and they live with that risk and its consequences for the rest of their life. We also know that there is an ugly part of history and we will not risk going backwards, giving up, giving in or lying down to it.’”

This evening on ESPN, John Saunders quipped “Dave Checketts is a solid individual, I don’t know what he’s doing hooked up with Rush Limbaugh right now, as a matter of fact.”
Classy.

Stephen A. Smith obviously is off his meds…there’s no way a person of color should ever think to defend Rush Limbaugh.

Whatever Stephen A. Smith is drinking, send a case of it to ESPN.

Stephen A Smith is going to catch all kinds of hell now, especially after he went on Levin’s show a week or so ago.

The more Stephen A. Smith speaks, the more I like him.
txag92 on October 11, 2009 at 9:48 PM
I gag when idiots opine on when sport in America is at its best.
Fact of the matter is the NFL these days is nothing more than a business franchise. How do you unite behind a team whose key players might be gone next year when another team gives them a better deal?
highhopes on October 11, 2009 at 9:50 PM
If nothing else, I hope this brouhaha boosts the popularity of the name “Demaurice.” Its time has come.
Infidoll on October 11, 2009 at 9:50 PM
It’s really unfortunate he went the, “Limbaugh is a racist” route but I guess it was inevitable even though it was completely unnecessary and, in and of itself, divisive.
As I’ve said before, I too think that, “sport in America is at its best when it unifies.” It is one of the few things left in America that unites all of us and for that reason, no politically active person should be an owner or involved in any meaningful way with any pro sports team.
Unfortunately, Smith just has a problem with this particular politically active person. My guess is he’d have no problem with Olberman or alike owning a team.
TheBigOldDog on October 11, 2009 at 9:52 PM
I love the left’s ability to frame an issue. “Will black players play for a racist?”
It just becomes part of the narrative
Limbaugh (indeed all conservatives)= Racist

I find it really depressing that so many black people think Rush Limbaugh is racist. The truth of the matter is that Rush treats people fairly in reaction to their values and character. He exemplifies MLK, Jr.’s dream in a way to which most Democrats will only pay lip service.
The majority of the black community has been backwards on this for a long time, and if they cannot work this out they will continue to marginalize themselves for who knows how many generations.
It’s sad and depressing and stupid.
Kensington on October 11, 2009 at 9:58 PM
Stephen A. Smith speaking common sense! So did Gary Vaynerchuk, of Wine Library.
Anyone can say anything to offend another human being. But because the person happens to be a conservative like Rush Limbaugh, it’s doubly worse for the lib media.
I also liked how Stephen A. pointed to the hypocrisy of NFL players, most of whom have the lowest moral standards, to speak of Rush as if they’re offended. Ridiculous.
Standing ovation here for Stephen A. Smith!
cubachi on October 11, 2009 at 9:58 PM
Stephen A. Smith telling the truth, and the Liberals weep and gnash their teeth.
With this and the SNL jabs at Rush, tomorrow will be a good show.

The first quote is separate from the clip. Smith thinks Limbaugh should be able to buy the Rams if he wants to.
BadgerHawk on October 11, 2009 at 10:01 PM
I’m pretty sure he was being sarcastic.
BadgerHawk on October 11, 2009 at 10:02 PM
Good for Stephen Smith: It takes guts to speak back to the radical liberals who are attempting to stifle free speech.

I should have been clearer. I mean NFL Players executive director DeMaurice Smith
TheBigOldDog on October 11, 2009 at 10:04 PM
Stephen A. Smith just described the totality of liberalism. “They are lying” when they speak of doing something out of principal. I loved it when he said to name them. Indeed. Name them.
I’m still waiting for someone to claim it’s racist to tackle McNabb.
SouthernGent on October 11, 2009 at 10:05 PM
Typical conservative…thinking people need to think for themselves. When will the “right” get over the notion of responsibility and freedom?
StevefromMKE on October 11, 2009 at 10:05 PM
Time for Fox to steal another talent from MSNBC and CNN, ala Beck and Imus. There has to be a time slot for Stephen A. Smith’s quite frank political observations.

cubachi on October 11, 2009 at 10:07 PM
TheBigOldDog – I’m confused by your post. Did you listen to the clip? I ask because your post seems way off the mark.
Rush is not a racist. Rush is fair. He sizes the person up by their values and the way they put themselves out to the world. Nothing wrong with that. That is the way we all should look at people.
KickandSwimMom on October 11, 2009 at 10:09 PM
Our language is in such sad shape. To discriminate = to make a distinction between, something that is often quite fine and necessary. Furthermore, it is exactly what he is doing when deciding that Limbaugh shouldn’t be permitted to own the Rams!
kc8ukw on October 11, 2009 at 10:09 PM
Next mantra: Rush is the slave owner. The black players are the slaves.
At least the field goal kicker will be okay.
SouthernGent on October 11, 2009 at 10:10 PM
I agree. The Liberals know that, but they have a narrative to maintain and ulterior motives. As an aside, Rush’s call-screener and Official Obama Critizer, Bo Snerdley (not his real name), is African-American (or Black). Snerdley’s comments as the Official Obama Critizer are hilarious.
conservative pilgrim on October 11, 2009 at 10:10 PM

KickandSwimMom on October 11, 2009 at 10:14 PM
I suspect the NFL will be able to play this against the NFLPA all right, but not for that reason.
I’m thinking it will be along the lines of leaking that the Checketts-Limbaugh bid is the best of the ones that would keep the team in St. Louis and that the other bidders of any significant size would want to move the team to City Of Industry, CA.
That would cause problems between a number of fans and the players if they cost St. Louis their team because of their opposition to a potential owner.
teke184 on October 11, 2009 at 10:15 PM

Dang! I wish Rush would buy the Eagles.
And fire McNabb and Vick.
One sucks and the other’s sick.
profitsbeard on October 11, 2009 at 10:18 PM
Yes, he owns the Dallas Mavericks and that’s my point. He’s a polarizing figure just as Rush would be or a million other politically active people in the public eye. They divide one of the only things left in this country that still unites us.
When you go to a Football, Baseball, Basketball or hockey team you are sitting among people with whom you may have only one thing in common: Your love of the team. You start introducing something like politics into the equation and you harm that unity.
TheBigOldDog on October 11, 2009 at 10:19 PM
Who ever mention “hill” above is so right. Please replace him and would happy to see Smith. I can’t stand to hear hill and turn the channel, just as I turn the channel when beckel is on or jeraldo. Love Rush and know he would make a good owner and would be fair….

Rush should stick to NASCAR. Why would he want to participate in a sport that has such a large population of a race he has such disdain for? I don’t think he could field an all White team. Maybe he could. Not sure.
One thing is for sure. If his team loses he would blame Obama and the “Mainstream Media” for the loss.

bill30097 on October 11, 2009 at 10:36 PM
While I understand that football is a risky business, the union Mr. Smith seemed almost to compare players to soldiers, policemen or firefighters. While I am sure there are many fine people playing the game, there are enough that have fallen short of perfection that should keep the stone throwing to a minimum.
Cindy Munford on October 11, 2009 at 10:36 PM
Personally I kinda hope Rush does not do it. One, I think it woul be a large financial risk. Two, being somewhat elfish, I think his effort are better directed elsewhere.

There’s no way the NFL should have anything to do with Rush Limbaugh after he killed those dogs.
Jim Treacher on October 11, 2009 at 10:38 PM
The leader of the Triumvirate GOP marketing machine should really be using his energy and resources to fight against the socialist takeover in more ways than just complaining behind a microphone, flying around in a private jet, smoking cigars, playing golf, and trying to buy NFL teams.
With his vast resources he could really be doing some action oriented stuff to beat back the massive institutions that have organized themselves against we the cattle, but he has other plans.
True_King on October 11, 2009 at 10:39 PM
Since he’s considering buying the Rams – arguably the worst team in football, the team that fumbled in the red zone TWICE today and had their quarterback drop a third fumble just trying to throw a pass- I think he’s prepared for the team to suffer some losses.
BadgerHawk on October 11, 2009 at 10:39 PM

Dingbat63 on October 11, 2009 at 10:42 PM
I think the sports media (ESPN, especially) will hurt Limbaugh’s chances more than the union will. They’re just as biased as the rest of the “journalists” out there. They are surely gnashing their teeth at the very idea of this move.
Look for the SI feature on how “hateful” Limbaugh is as the time for a decision grows closer.
AScott on October 11, 2009 at 10:44 PM
And that actually costs NBC some viewers. I don’t watch the pre-game or half time segments of ‘Football Night in America’.
I’m ambivalent on Rush buying the Rams, but I don’t think many fans are going to stop going to the games just because he’s the owner – especially if they start winning.
BadgerHawk on October 11, 2009 at 10:45 PM
One of Rush’s good friends is a black former NFL lineman who is a Preacher in a Western State. Rush has him give his NFL analysis on the program from time to time. I would mention Snerdly also, but our Trolls go crazy and run him into the groud whenever he’s mentioned around here. Fox News/Sports should definitely hire Stephen A. Smith.
kingsjester on October 11, 2009 at 10:47 PM
What is so funny about that Liberal Barack lover Union Smith is that A LOT OF THE FOOTBALL COACHES ARE CONSERVATIVES. The vast majority of them vote Republican.

LOL! Sorry, kid, we already demolished the Leftist NASCAR stereotype last week.
Here in my home state of New Hampshire (Blue state, voted for Jeanne-Claude Kerri in ’04 and O’bama in ’08, and all but one Congress critters are Dems, as is our Governor) our International Speedway gets 2 NASCAR major races a year-most tracks only get 1.
One of the legendary tracks in in Chuck U. Schumer’s blue state of New York (Watkins Glen), and blue state Connecticut also has a major track, as do blue states Pennylvania and Joe Biden’s state of Maryland, all of which host major NASCAR races.
And out west, Nancy Pelosi’s state has 2 NASCAR tracks, and Harry Reid’s has 1.
getalife.

I love that the premise: Rush is a racist, isn’t even being debated. What evidence do these folks offer to convict him? Hmmmm?
InTheBellyoftheBeast on October 11, 2009 at 10:55 PM
Rush was right about McNabb at the time, but nowadays he defends him, because he has played at a good consistant(except for the damn injuries) level for a while.
thebrokenrattle on October 11, 2009 at 10:55 PM
As Rush has said (when channeling libtard media hacks), evidence is not necessary, it is the seriousness of the charge.

Rush committed the unforgivable sin of telling the truth about the MSM.
Oh wait, look how harshly the media have treated Ojesus. Rush obviously must be a racist. If Limbaugh had been telling the truth, the media would be treating Jug-ears with kid gloves–you know, fact-checking SNL parodies and the like.
hillbillyjim on October 11, 2009 at 11:09 PM
Who was that bimbo always trying to interrupt and badmouth El Rushbo? She just couldn’t wait for Smith to take a breath so she could try a different angle of attack. Typical CNN mouthpiece. Smith should have asked her if she knew what a post pattern was, or a button-hook route.

These guys call themselves professionals, do they not? So, how is it that they grumble about the possibility of business affiliation with ANYONE simply because one has differing (political views) than they?
The grumblers’ are the intolerant and hateful ones because they are incapable of practicing “live and let live” not to talk of wishing well to other people—who just happen not to be political clones of theirs.
ConScribe on October 11, 2009 at 11:20 PM
Just so everyone is clear on what Rush originally said about Donovan McNabb, here’s a portion of one of his shows in which Limbaugh revisits it in 2007, five years after the incident:
The Media Made McNabb a Victim
September 18, 2007
Anyone who has listened to Limbaugh’s programs for as many years as I have can attest to the fact that there is not one ounce of prejudice or racism in his being. It’s the Libs/MSM/Progs who are hell bent on destroying him that take everything he says that even remotely refers to African-Americans and distorts it to have racial overtones.
KendraWilder on October 11, 2009 at 11:25 PM
