NFL week 5 open thread
posted at 10:00 am on October 11, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Pittsburgh managed to finally beat a good team last week in shutting down the San Diego Chargers, but they made it look a lot more interesting in the fourth quarter than they should have allowed, especially at home. The Steelers need to work on closing out games, but that should not be a problem this week when they visit Detroit. The Lions are a better team than last year’s monument to futility, but they’re not that much better. They’re rebuilding, and in a couple of years could be contenders. The Steelers shouldn’t underestimate them, and if they don’t, they should win with a good running game and tough defense. I’ll predict a 34-13 win for the champs.
So far, I’m 21-4 this season on my picks. Can I keep it going? We’ll see:
- New York Jets at Miami – Miami is a bit of a mystery, but I think that Mark Sanchez picks himself up from a poor performance last week and wins on the road, 27-17.
- New England at Denver – Denver is undefeated and playing at home, but Tom Brady’s looking better each week. The Pats give up points, though, and their one loss was on the road. I’m picking Denver for a bit of an upset; they keep finding ways to win, but this one should be close, 27-24. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it go into OT.
- Minnesota at St. Louis – Are you kidding me? Expect both teams to keep their 0′s (the Vikes in the L column and the Lambs in the W column) in a 31-3 blowout. I’m almost ashamed to include this in the picks. Almost. Calling Rush Limbaugh — Mr. Limbaugh, please pick up the red emergency phone now.
- Houston at Arizona – The Cards have lost both of their games at home and won one on the road. Houston is 1-2 at home and 1-0 on the road. Houston just dismantled Oakland, but I think the Cards win their first home game tomorrow, 21-14. If not, that’s pretty much the season right there, especially if the 49ers keep winning.
- Atlanta at San Francisco – Is everyone as impressed with Mike Singletary’s work with the 49ers as I am? He has made this a tough, hard-nosed football team playing way above expectations. They are 3-0 in the division and two games ahead of the Cards coming off their Super Bowl appearance. Being a Dodgers fan, I usually root against any team in the Bay, but I like what Singletary’s doing. The 49ers keep rolling with a 24-10 win over Atlanta.
Update: Minnesota, not Minneapolis. Ugh.

Jets almost always beat Miami. It should be the “Gimme of the Week”.

the rams should just fire the entire team, and replace them with Tebow and his Florida teammates!
right4life on October 11, 2009 at 10:13 AM
Ed, point of clarification. Is this your record based on picking winners/losers or nailing the actual scores.
If the latter, I will soon be quitting my day jobs and wagering solely based on your score picks.
: ^ )

Games only, not scores. If it was scores, I’d be already living in Las Vegas.
Ed Morrissey on October 11, 2009 at 10:22 AM
As odd as it sounds, I really think the Steelers were far better served having the toughest schedule in the NFL last year, as opposed to having one of the easier ones this year. Anything that takes the pressure off them seems to make them lose focus.

Pretty good Fox News Sunday. Panel of Mitch Daniels, a resort businessman (Wynn), Gov. Granholm (MI), and some economist who advised McCain but also helped write the Stimulus. Guess who came across best?
The panel has Liz Cheney on it. Awesome.

This is the first time I’ve had a Sunday off of work in so many years that I don’t even remember what channel this ‘foot – ball’ thing you refer to comes on. And I’m only off ’cause I cracked a rib. If I remember correctly, my favorite team wears a green uniform with a bird or soemthing on it. Go Green Birds!
Tony737 on October 11, 2009 at 10:43 AM
The 49ers started last year 2-5 and haven’t had a winning season since 2002. After Singletary was named interim coach, the 49ers are 8-5 since then. They’re about 3 plays from being 11-2 — all three heartbreaking losses on the road against playoff-bound teams.
aunursa on October 11, 2009 at 10:49 AM
Steve Wynn demolished Granhom and Obama through his guy, and I’d recommend the Wynn comments for a thread here on HA.
He was clear, concise and devastating.
TXUS on October 11, 2009 at 10:50 AM
Should Harry Reid be getting nervous?
When the 49ers get through with despensing the Falcons today, they will remain one miracle pass (Farve’s) away from being 5-0. If this team remains healthy, (especially the defense), they will be in the playoffs for a welcomed change for niner faithfuls.
As for Tebow and Florida: Charleston Southern, Troy,
Florida International???? Other than yesterday’s match against LSU, (then questionably #4), Florida doesn’t play another ranked team this year except for #25 South Carolina. Simply put, I’m not impressed with Florida. Put them in the Pac 10 this year and they’d be lucky to be a .500 team. But with this wussy schedule……
Rovin on October 11, 2009 at 10:53 AM
The 49ers started last year 2-5 and haven’t had a winning season since 2002 – Aunursa
There used to be a show on Fox TV called “Space: Above and Beyond”. It takes place in the 2060s. In one scene they were talkin about football, one guy said “The 49ers suck, they haven’t won a Superbowl in 75 years.” Maybe the show was prophetic? :-) haha

Just how many games has Big Ben played in where he has not thrown an interception? Anyone?
ladyingray on October 11, 2009 at 2:20 PM
Wowser, the Colts are actually gonna be on TV here in LA. Unfortunately, I think they outclass the Titans enough that it won’t make for a very interesting game.
Machete_Bug on October 11, 2009 at 2:20 PM
Has anyone noticed that is ok to hogtie a d-lineman if he comes around the tackle this year? I’ve seen it happen on every game I have watched this season, apparently an O-line can grab the d-line around the neck and this does not constitute a hold…..must be a Bush rule huh?

Dallas coming back-now 13-10 KC with the 4th quarter to go.
Gotta love the big ‘ole state of Texas logo on the Chiefs helmets this week. Throwback to their Dallas Texans roots.
Del Dolemonte on October 11, 2009 at 3:25 PM
Ed – the current score of the Rams-Viking game is 31-3 Vikes.
Not THAT hard to predict but you get props nohow. Meanwhile, my beloved Rams sink further in the tar-pit of NFL failure and irrelevance.
Mike D. on October 11, 2009 at 3:30 PM
whoops now its 31-9. Sorry Ed, maybe theres some life in the old Rams yet.
Mike D. on October 11, 2009 at 3:32 PM
Ed – You get a pass for not mentioning the Bears. It’s their bye week, but I’m hoping to see a prediction next week. And the Vikings-Rams game was a little too easy to be posted on your picks. Would love to hear your opinion on the Bengals-Ravens game.

Those are their original 1960 uniforms. This is what the NFL critters call a “Legacy Game”. The Patriots are also wearing their old “Pat Patriot” unis, which they wore until Pat got replaced by Elvis.
Del Dolemonte on October 11, 2009 at 4:47 PM
OK I give up. What the HELL is Denver wearing???
Willie on October 11, 2009 at 4:53 PM
See my 4:47 PM post.
BTW the “convicts”, as Andy Griffith called them, are also wearing throwback uniforms.
Del Dolemonte on October 11, 2009 at 4:55 PM
yeah, I obviously posted before reading the thread. It is a breach of posting etiquette. Sorry, and thanks for the info
PS In any year, those are HORRIBLE uniforms
Willie on October 11, 2009 at 4:58 PM
I think they found them at Goodwill.
m064404 on October 11, 2009 at 4:59 PM
Ya, I know about the whole AFC thing this year but I don’t ever remember those things Denver is wearing. Those things beat out the Jets/Titans and the Steeler throwbacks from last year as the most hidious uniforms ever. Oh, while we’re on it, those glow in the dark jerseys the Seahawks wore last week made me go throw all my recycling into the trash. Thanks Seattle.
oakpack on October 11, 2009 at 5:02 PM
absolutely.. . .the Seahawks unis last week are a very close second to what the Broncos are wearing today in all time ghastly uniforms. Do you see those socks??? gag!!

Do you see those socks???

Tallman6759 on October 11, 2009 at 5:18 PM
Capt. consider yourself pinched
Bengals are lucky bastards
/
CWforFreedom on October 11, 2009 at 5:18 PM
The pink doesn’t bother me; I just hope each week or month is not another “awareness” campaign. It is, after all, football, not community organizing. I think most players are probably supportive than not, but I bet they don’t want to be billboards for one campaign or another all season long. I think they just want to win.
Willie on October 11, 2009 at 5:18 PM
lol. Just joshin ya. Kinda hard to miss those things. The Pat’s socks don’t rate a whole bunch better.
I think the breast cancer awareness campaign was a good thing. The Farves had been doing that in Green Bay for a few years now. The disease has touched my family a couple times so I’m all for it.
oakpack on October 11, 2009 at 5:19 PM

Watching the Hawks playing right now. Doing pretty good at stopping Jax. Hopefully they don’t blow it.

And Singletary is blowin his lid on the sidelines again. He makes Ditka look like Mr Rodgers.
oakpack on October 11, 2009 at 5:28 PM
Ed thinks because Minn had so much trouble with the 9ers, and only won on a freak play, that they have to be good………..NOT.
oakpack on October 11, 2009 at 5:30 PM
Atlanta 35, San Francisco 10.
And it’s not even half time.
That many points in half, I think that might be a franchise record for us, as a matter of fact.
radioboyatl on October 11, 2009 at 5:43 PM
Seahwaks have Hasselbeck back. Time to revive this season Seattle!!!
Ordinary1 on October 11, 2009 at 5:46 PM
If I have it right, the Bengals are 4-1 despite giving away 11 points on blown snaps.
Only we could franchise the placekicker and refuse to field a competent snapper for him.
But what a win!
By the way, gray on ladies is pretty boring.

BTW the Patriots’ honorary Captain today is the great Gino Cappelletti, was was the team’s leading all-time scorer until 4 years ago. Gino now does color on radio with the great Pats play by play man Gil Santos.
Gino was introduced on the field before the game, during which time Gil in the booth talked to Gino’s QB, Babe Parilli-their partnership in the 1960s was nicknamed “Grand Opera.”
