NFL week 5 open thread

posted at 10:00 am on October 11, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Pittsburgh managed to finally beat a good team last week in shutting down the San Diego Chargers, but they made it look a lot more interesting in the fourth quarter than they should have allowed, especially at home. The Steelers need to work on closing out games, but that should not be a problem this week when they visit Detroit. The Lions are a better team than last year’s monument to futility, but they’re not that much better. They’re rebuilding, and in a couple of years could be contenders. The Steelers shouldn’t underestimate them, and if they don’t, they should win with a good running game and tough defense. I’ll predict a 34-13 win for the champs.

So far, I’m 21-4 this season on my picks. Can I keep it going? We’ll see:

  • New York Jets at Miami – Miami is a bit of a mystery, but I think that Mark Sanchez picks himself up from a poor performance last week and wins on the road, 27-17.
  • New England at Denver – Denver is undefeated and playing at home, but Tom Brady’s looking better each week. The Pats give up points, though, and their one loss was on the road. I’m picking Denver for a bit of an upset; they keep finding ways to win, but this one should be close, 27-24. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it go into OT.
  • Minnesota at St. Louis – Are you kidding me? Expect both teams to keep their 0′s (the Vikes in the L column and the Lambs in the W column) in a 31-3 blowout. I’m almost ashamed to include this in the picks. Almost. Calling Rush Limbaugh — Mr. Limbaugh, please pick up the red emergency phone now.
  • Houston at Arizona – The Cards have lost both of their games at home and won one on the road. Houston is 1-2 at home and 1-0 on the road. Houston just dismantled Oakland, but I think the Cards win their first home game tomorrow, 21-14. If not, that’s pretty much the season right there, especially if the 49ers keep winning.
  • Atlanta at San Francisco – Is everyone as impressed with Mike Singletary’s work with the 49ers as I am? He has made this a tough, hard-nosed football team playing way above expectations. They are 3-0 in the division and two games ahead of the Cards coming off their Super Bowl appearance. Being a Dodgers fan, I usually root against any team in the Bay, but I like what Singletary’s doing. The 49ers keep rolling with a 24-10 win over Atlanta.

Update: Minnesota, not Minneapolis. Ugh.

Gatordoug on October 11, 2009 at 6:51 PM

These old AFL ref unis are pretty sad too

Gatordoug on October 11, 2009 at 6:52 PM

Once again the Ravens got screwed by very questionable officiating.

wepeople on October 11, 2009 at 6:52 PM

I hated the Steelers retro uniforms last week – those yellow helments are just nasty.

ladyingray on October 11, 2009 at 6:45 PM

I kind of like them but you gotta admit it is masterful marketing. You know millions of fans buy them even though they already have a current version.

Who needs two? Apparently many think they do.

CWforFreedom on October 11, 2009 at 6:52 PM

Lets go Broncos

I would love for the Broncos to win even though I said they were pretenders . Sometimes being wrong can be beautiful

CWforFreedom on October 11, 2009 at 7:05 PM

Worst college unis? Ever? Penn State’s all white look.

Gatordoug on October 11, 2009 at 7:05 PM

Who Dey…Who Dey….Who dey think gonna bet them Bengals?

Tallman6759 on October 11, 2009 at 5:18 PM

Alright so the Bengals won. I can’t believe that they didn’t get help from the refs. Who the hell ever gets called for not lining up correctly for a P.A.T.? Effin Refs? And it’s not like the Ravens D didn’t do there part, but one has to wonder how this particular referee crew got trained. Idiots! I also wonder if it’s something about the Ravens that makes refs think about what they can (or don’t) call and get away with. Yeah, I’m serious.

Anyways, Carson Palmer is a good quarterback and deserves respect, something the Ravens defense didn’t seem to do enough of today.

Hey Denver!

Nice pants!

Tony737 on October 11, 2009 at 6:08 PM

I hope that didn’t hurt too much with all the laughing you obviously did.

And this is for the next one….God Bless You!

JohnnyD on October 11, 2009 at 7:24 PM

•New England at Denver – … I wouldn’t be surprised to see it go into OT.

Well, they have. Good prediction there.

holding breath, holding breath. . . . .Broncos win, man I hate the Pats; this was a good one

CWforFreedom on October 11, 2009 at 7:14 PM

Sigh…I heard back again this week from my friend who works in the sports dept. of the Boston Herald, which broke the Matt Walsh story last year. Walsh of course was the former Pats guy who accused the team of repeated “cheating”m and claimed to have the “evidence” to prove it.

The NFL investigation concluded that

1. Walsh had NO evidence to prove his allegations.

2. Walsh had NO corroborating witnesses to prove his allegations.

The Patriots head coach was found to have violated league rules in one game, against one team. To call the entire team “cheaters” insults them as highly trained professional atheletes.

Case closed. Give it a rest.

Oh, and they lost in OT. I guess they didn’t “cheat” enough to win?

Del Dolemonte on October 11, 2009 at 7:36 PM

…And the Broncos win!

ConScribe on October 11, 2009 at 7:37 PM

Del Dolemonte on October 11, 2009 at 7:36 PM

One other thought…then I am outa here…. I guess cheaters always win eh?/

CWforFreedom on October 11, 2009 at 7:39 PM

Who Dey!

loudmouth883 on October 11, 2009 at 8:06 PM

Ugh… I’m running 6/12 so far. The Browns!?! The Browns!?! Damn. I’m not moving to Vegas anytime soon. My picks were so bad this week. I blame the Nobel Peace Prize Committee. Silver lining: Rams are making it a cheap buy for Limbaugh.

chicagojedi on October 11, 2009 at 8:23 PM

I hate the Bengals but that was a great finish…

ladyingray on October 11, 2009 at 8:50 PM

When Kyle Orton was new in Chicago and a bench sitter he called up a radio show and became a sort of regular, and was a genuinely nice guy. Most Bear fans miss him, but we’re happy to have Cutler.

Don’t despair Denver Donkey fans, your throwback uni’s should be thrown back (except for the one WR who twisted his socks from stripes into spirals), but Orton’s a keeper. He led the Bears to winning seasons only to have Grossman put back in to lose the big games.

And now you know he can throw deep.

MarkT on October 11, 2009 at 9:46 PM

PS- a lot of Bears fans are now also Donkey fans, or San Fran Samouraï fans. We used to root for Oakland as our late game team, but now they’re a bunch of timid losers. Denver and SF play very hard all game, making them fun to watch.

MarkT on October 11, 2009 at 9:51 PM

I don’t know how all you NFL fans feel, but this weekend’s games for the most part have been sleepers

Willie on October 11, 2009 at 10:05 PM

Yes, any argument about the Browns and Bengals though?

Gatordoug on October 11, 2009 at 7:01 PM

I’ll argue with you considering the Bengals; they are now 4-1 with their only loss coming to the undefeated Denver Broncos after the “Immaculate Deflection” in Week One.

I just hope they began looking for a new long-snapper when the plane landed in Northern Kentucky this evening.

rmel80 on October 12, 2009 at 12:39 AM

The Cowboys win was uglier than Helen Thomas without makeup.

michaelo on October 12, 2009 at 12:44 AM

Oops, my bad. I didn’t notice that the “five worst” list was regarding the uniforms. Seeing a list that included the Bills and Browns and the word “worst” in it made me very defensive when I saw my 4-1 Bengals lumped in with them.

rmel80 on October 12, 2009 at 12:48 AM

From my politics blog: Italy is giving apostates from Islam and targets of honor murders real protection.

From my comics blog: anti-war storytelling has cropped up in Superman’s books, courtesy of the pretentious Greg Rucka and James Robinson.

And, from my game blog: a video of Nam 1975.

JohnnyD on October 11, 2009 at 7:24 PM

As someone who was a long snapper in high school and college, I believe that it’s a rule that should be in effect at every level. The rule is to keep a defensive player from lining up over someone that has his head a foot off the ground and throwing the ball through their legs. No player is more vulnerable in the game of football than the long-snapper. I know this for a fact because in my 13 years of playing football I played every position except nose tackle.

The most questionable call in the game was the ball that was picked up by Ndukwe and returned for an apparent touchdown. The Refs didn’t rule the Raven receiver down until after they talked it over. The original call on the field was a fumble and a subsequent touchdown. The play was not blown dead until after the referees huddled up. The replay review was not definitive one way or another according to the CBS broadcasters, so the Ravens were very lucky the Refs changed the call before the instant replay challenge was made by the Bengals.

But having said all that, one thing is for sure. The better team won!

I expect to see Ray Lewis suspended or at least fined for the helmet to face hit that blew Chad’s helmet off. What a cheap shot from someone who should know better.

RustBelt on October 12, 2009 at 6:33 AM

RustBelt on October 12, 2009 at 6:33 AM

Yeah, he should have known better. Any penalty incurred for the hit will have been worth it though, considering Chad Johnson’s trash-talking big mouth. It sure looked like it felt good hitting him.

The Tennessee Titanics were bound and determined to save their sinking ship and get their first win of the season. Unfortunately they did not get to play against the Nobel committee. They played the Colts. I know how badly the Tennessee fans feel (pandering). Been there (patronizing). But I did enjoy the shot of a Tennessee fan with a paper bag over his head and the words “Code Blues” written on it.

SKYFOX on October 12, 2009 at 8:16 AM

JohnnyD, I wonder if God’s linebacker felt really good about contributing rather significantly to the loss. Stupid penalty at a critical time in the game.
