Video: Global warming arrives in Minnesota

posted at 12:30 pm on October 10, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

As I wrote earlier this week, we anticipated our first snow of the season last night — and it arrived. Officially we were supposed to get a mix of snow and rain, but as you can see in this video, the Twin Cities got enough snow that it stuck to the ground through the mid-morning. When I shot this off of my deck, the temperature was still at 29.5 degrees, which is rather crisp for the 19th day ofautumn:

Every time I post about this, people send me e-mails saying that “of course the weather changes from day to day — that doesn’t prove anything!”  Well, that’s exactly my point.  Weather gets warmer and cooler every day, month, year, decade, all the way to ages and eons, and has long before mankind began releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

However, the trend for the past eleven years has been cooling, not warming, which tends to disprove any relation to CO2 release and warming temperatures.  We had the first summer in recent memory where Minnesota did not sustain high temps of 90 degrees for any extended period, if we hit it at all.  We have had two cold and long winters in a row, and today indicates that 2009-10 will be longer and colder yet; last year, we didn’t get our first sticking snowfall until the end of October.

Technical notes: I shot this with my Flip Ultra HD, which was my first outdoor use, and it looks pretty good. I edited two clips into one movie, added the titles, and uploaded it to my YouTube channel with the FlipShare software, which made it pretty easy.  Just for the FTC, no one compensated me for this message.

How long have we been looking at the weather?

And how long as the climate done some pretty whacked up stuff?

I think Rush is right on this one: We’ve been here for how long? And how much have we impacted the climate?

Mother nature and Earth have been here far longer than we have! It would be a stretch at best to think we could tell Mother Earth what to do and how to do it by any means.

Chaz706 on October 10, 2009 at 2:32 PM

We are currently less than half a degree above the 1901 to 2000 average.

crosspatch on October 10, 2009 at 12:46 PM

There in lies my primary argument.

Chaz706 on October 10, 2009 at 2:34 PM

Algore is an arrogant fool. However there is little doubt that CO2 levels are increasing, that the source of the increase is man made, and that CO2 does generally lead to warming.

Certainly solar output is a major factor on the earth’s temperature, and other affects such as sulfur aerosols from volcanoes, cosmic rays, rates of particulate pollution all affect the earth’s albedo. The global warming theories don’t assume CO2 is the main reason for all of the warming, but posit that small changes can create feedback mechanisms that swing our temperatures drastically due to the changes in albedo.

Get a little too warm, and you get reduced ice coverage and more absorption of the sun’s energy. Get a little too cold, and too much of the sun’s energy gets reflected back into space. Which is worse? Well, if a slight decrease in the sun’s output or a bad volcanic eruption can spin us into an ice age, I guess I’d rather the climate err on the warm side.

I’m a one issue voter. Whichever candidate thinks we should do less to “combat climate change” gets my vote. Are there any viable candidates? Anyone?

Nice place Ed. Yah, global warming for sure.

Seven Percent Solution on October 10, 2009 at 2:54 PM

Just because its called Global Warming doesn’t mean it happens everywhere, it could happen only locally, like on Venus.

And just because it called warming doesn’t mean that sometimes it can’t cool off and freeze in some places where it is not supposed to ya know.

Global Warming is a highly nuanced concept that only sophisticated libtards can understand. /s

Excuse me, but the whole CO2 meme that it causes global warming is WRONG.

CO2 IS a Greenhouse gas, however, once it hits a certain level, all of the enenrgy in its absorbtion bands (where it absorbs IR energy) is absorbed. Once at that level, adding more CO2 means nothing, only adding more ENERGY will cause a temperature rise.

Between CO2 and Water vapor, we are already absorbing all the energy in CO2 bands…

The “reason” we see a supposed corelation between CO2 and Termperature from the historic record is that Sea Water is the largest repository of CO2, and as IT raises temperature it releases CO2 into the atmosphere… ie… CO2 rises due to the rise in Temp, not vice versa…

The warmers have cause and effect BACKWARDS, and this can be verified in a Labratory.

Romeo13 on October 10, 2009 at 3:30 PM

It doesn’t matter if the actual temperatures around the world are getting colder. What is important is that capitalism be constrained and you do that by connecting the use of energy to some planetary disaster. That’s all the global warming proponents want. Why are you fighting it? Why are you snowing on their parade?

Yes, the science is backwards. But how else can they get you to use less energy and pay more taxes? You are not helping things by stating the obvious. Income needs to be redistributed, the president said so, and the global warming idea was created to help that cause under the auspices of collective planetary good, rather than old fashion communism. The former is in vogue, the latter is ’70s polyester pants. You got to change with the times, you got to reinvent yourself, and redistributionism has. We don’t use the word communism or Red anymore. We say Green. Just like we don’t say retard, or colored, or stewardess. We say mentally challenged, African-American and flight attendant.

Have some understanding and empathy. After the Soviet Union collapsed in ’89, communism got a bad rap as a failed philosophy. The socialists were moribund. One could not campaign under a red banner anymore. The solution was to campaign under a green banner and redistribute income and control energy use purportedly for “environmental reasons” rather than the old, but actual, political reasons. That avoided the messy and unwinnable strategy of class warfare. It was now about planetary altruism. A much easier sell in the guilt-ridden West.

So videos of snow in October, or snow in April, are not helping the cause at all, Mr Ed. Everybody knows by now the earth is getting cooler if anything. What they don’t know is that taxes need to go up, income needs to be redistributed, energy corporations need to be nationalized, and private enterprise needs to be regulated into submission. And most of all, the people who choose not to work as paid slaves, need to be taken care of. Capitalism is evil and only communism can subdue it and you subdue it with social justice measures. Only hugely increased tax scales can hope to bring about the change needed to do that. It’s audacious I know, but we have to dream.

This is why it is important that re-education centers be set up to inform the masses of the need that social justice proceed unabated regardless of climate conditions. The worst thing we can do right now is look at the climate. It’s not cooperating with the narrative. The CO2 argument ultimately will collapse. So focusing in on it as you do in these videos is counterproductive to the socialist cause. Really, Ed, I don’t know why you post these videos.

You think spreading truth is more important that spreading income? The truth is not what matters. And surely scientific truth matters even less. What matters is shrinking the bourgeoisie middle class and, by golly, as Che as my witness, if you think that facts and truth will stop the march of progress, you are sadly mistaken.

When the full-of-shitness of “global warming” became obvious to anyone with a pulse, the eco-stalinists started calling it “climate change”.

A more clever epithet, but very unadventurous. It can’t be immediately rubbished with scornful laughter (like “global warming”) because the weather is always in flux. But since the weather is always in flux, anyone with a brain should be saying “so what?”

Sadly the media is full of people who don’t have brains and this “climate change” farce remains largely unchallenged.

Hopefully we’ll bore of it eventually. Mind you, it took 20 years for rap music to die, so weather hysteria may be in style for another decade. I could knaw off my own arm in frustration.

Newsbusters:

Global warming is helping America’s sworn enemies al Qaeda as well as the Taliban in Afghanistan. So claimed ABCNews.com’s “World News Webcast” Friday in a segment not only designed to increase America’s fear of Al Gore’s money-making bogeyman, but also give cover to President Obama as things in Afghanistan continue to spiral out of control.

Ah yes, the old “you should agree with us because it would help in the causes YOU believe in” angle. Nice try, ABC.

The climate is always changing, so there is always climate change. But if there is no change in the climate than that is a change from the usual climate change, thereby lack of change is also change.

But seriously, we own this stupidity now; Bush and many other Republicans have tried to “combat climate change” as well. Will our lives ever be rid of this idiocy?

Essentially, all models are wrong, but some are useful.
Box, George E. P.; Norman R. Draper (1987). Empirical Model-Building and Response Surfaces. Wiley. pp. p. 424. ISBN 0471810339.

All mathematical / statistical models are bound and beholden to assumptions chosen by the model builders. This is especially true for the all-knowing, all-seeing “global warming” or “climate change” models so beloved by True Believers of the Church of AGW. Absent a thorough exposition of their assumptions and sensitivity of their models’ outcomes to changes in the assumptions, their proponents are simply fans of the latest (extremely) high-priced video games… who are bent on destroying free enterprise.

All of this ‘debate’ is pointless.

Al Gore was given a Nobel Prize and won an Academy Award and made a movie called The Day After Tomorrow An Inconvenient Truth.

catmman on October 10, 2009 at 4:49 PM

There is no corroborating evidence to support the claim this alleged video was allegedly shot this morning with an alleged vidcam in the alleged location.

But, if it’s truly true, really for real, then it could only be another move by the vast right-wing conspiracy (it has to be, since both Clintons agree when they almost never agree on anything) to make Al Gore look bad. And to stop Cap&Trade by any nefarious means.

This alleged snowfall is Republican terrorism, and we need a Congressional investigation too root out the perpetrators.

I firmly believe in global warming and I expect to see a warming trend in 2010 – probably in the spring. You can all panic, at least until the next anticipated presage to our ice age which will occur approximately one year from now.

“THERE’S A SUCKER BORN EVERY MINUTE.”

These immortal words apply especially to the latest generation of gullible college attendees who’ve bought into their dimwit liberal professors’ predictions of global doom unless we “did something” about “global warming” (now referred to as “climate change”).

These dumb saps actually think “humans” can offset the global climatic effects of the sun. Pretty far fetched, but as I said, “gullible” is the key word here.

As I speak, the Colorado Rockies playoff game against Philadelphia had to be cancelled since the temperature in Denver is hovering the the high teens and low twenties … a bit too cold to play baseball.

No matter …. these dumb suckers will be back at their desks first thing Monday morning schemeing to force windmills and solar panels on a populace that sees this fraud for what it is.

As a great, advanced civilization, we’re doomed.

I have a video I made back in the Spring when we got 7 inches the first of April, here in Atlanta. Yup, that happens ALL the time in the South, doncha know? We have had frost several days already, unusually cool temps. Feels like it did when I was a kid, could it mean there is something cyclical about weather? Hmmm.
