Quotes of the day
posted at 9:30 pm on October 10, 2009 by Allahpundit
“I have just notified the Nobel Peace Prize Committee that upon due consideration, I have decided to decline the great honor they have presented me and therefore will not be going to Oslo in December.
I explained to them, I hope convincingly, that I should have done this yesterday, after the award was announced. But to be honest, I was in a state of shock and not thinking clearly. A President of the United States must be prepared for any news, any time someone walks through the door. But being told that I had won the Nobel Peace Prize was simply not on what the National Security folks call ‘the Threat Board,’ a mere nine months into my term of office. In retrospect, it was a very ‘teachable moment,’ and one I hope to have learned from.
I don’t know the Norwegian words for ‘Let’s get real,’ but I tried earnestly to convey in plain English that awarding me the Nobel Peace Prize, at this stage of my presidency, opens the Committee itself to the charge that it dispenses its gold promiscuously, without regard to actual accomplishment.”
***
“This is an award for not being George W. Bush. This is an award for not making the world nervous. This is an award for sharing the basic political sentiments and assumptions of the members of the committee. It is for what Barack Obama may do, not what he has done. He hasn’t done anything.
In one mindless stroke, the committee has rendered the Nobel Peace Prize a laughingstock, perhaps for as long as a generation. And that is an act of true destruction, because it was actually good that the world had a prestigious award for peacemaking…
How to redeem this? That is a hard question, but here is one idea. The president will deliver a big speech in Oslo Dec. 10: white tie and tails, a formal, bound statement. The world, as they say, will be watching. He should deflect the limelight. (Can he?) He should make his subject bigger than himself. (Is there a subject bigger than himself?) He has been accused of traveling through the world on an extended apology tour. That isn’t fair, but the tag is there. How about an unapologetic address, a speech, with the world’s elites leaning forward and listening, about the meaning of America? A speech that shows a grounded and sophisticated love for his country and its great traditions and history. Not a nationalistic speech, not a prideful one, but a loving one.”

Well, what have you done lately,to deserve such an
honour!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Noble Peace Prize is given to those that have made a
mark, that have contributed some fashion or form, and have
actually accomplished something!!!!!!!!!!!!
Phrases and Words,simply don`t cut it,Mr.President!!

“Hype and Hypers” is right. Two “conservatives” miffed at a Nobel Peace Price but perfectly happy on their knees for the office of President of the United States.
Marcus on October 10, 2009 at 9:35 PM
Well, I’m not sure how important a prize really is. The fact is that it’s impossible to spell out who really makes a difference, often for generations.
So a prize is nice, but it is meaningless when it becomes about politics, as the committee has now made it.
AnninCA on October 10, 2009 at 9:36 PM
T’aint gonna happen.
John the Libertarian on October 10, 2009 at 9:37 PM
This whole thing is absurd and somehow every word, pro or con written about it makes it all the more absurd.
myrenovations on October 10, 2009 at 9:40 PM
It’s pretty fair to me. Why is it that people only seem to get their own nuance (when they have to explain it after putting their foot in their mouth)?
Obama has apologized for the past, present and future America dozens of times all aross the globe.

The American federal order, while it was still federal, suffered just one war among its member states. It may be Madison, more than anyone since, who deserves a Nobel Peace Prize.

An old girlfriend of mine in Spain, liberal as the days is long, asked on her Facebook post yesterdy: “Why oh why did he accept it?” Many people in the world doubtless see it for what it is. But it can’t really be cheapened after Arafat won anyway. He’s in good company.

I would be even more briefer, and just say, “I must with great respect decline this honor, until such time as it could be merited, and for the present defer to the tremendous models of courage and sacrifice elsewhere under consideration.”

In a non-bizzaro world, Ronald Reagan And Eduard Shevardnadze would have won.
In a non-bizzaro world, George W. Bush and Tony Blair would have won.
Instead, Jimmy Carter won.
Yassar Arafat won.
Albert Arnold Gore, Jr. won.
And now, the Won won.

Geochelone on October 10, 2009 at 9:55 PM
What is he going to say when he accepts it? That will be one very interesting speech. I, for one, cannot wait. Alot of platitudes, rhetoric about peace, love and harmony and how we are the ones we’ve been waiting for! LOL! Really, I can’t wait. This really will be his biggest speech ever…and he is going to suck!

I tried to work up feeling bad for him. I do think a lot of wonderful minorities often are handed things too easily, and that drains their spirit.
But in this case, remembering the Greek columns and the grand speech in Germany, I fell short of sympathy.
He’s just going down in history as the great speechifier.

Anything that a lefty group, like the Nobel peace prize committee, does to discredit itself and reveal themselves as fools is a good thing.
Speaking of which, how is the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences going to come up with a way to give Obama an Oscar?
That ought to be some real entertainment right there.

Chris Buckley picked to cheerlead the side of the Euro appeasers because of some vague feeling that McCain would die immediately upon winning and Sarah Palin would declare a Christian theocracy or something. Its too late to hear him try to make up for it.

katy on October 10, 2009 at 10:14 PM
When he accepts the award – it will be big – lots of coverage.
If he’s getting it in December it gives him two more months to totally blow what’s left of his credibility to shreds. If it happens – he’ll look like a clown receiving it.
I think we can count on Ogabe to continue wounding himself between now and then.

The true irony is that if he would have graciously declined the Nobel, he would have reached the God-like status he so desperately craves! “Pride cometh before a fall.” Alas, his pride could not have turned it down! We can only hope for the fall!

the_nile on October 10, 2009 at 10:35 PM
The proper response, as expressed by in the first QOTD was to respectfully decline and insist it go to a more deserving nominee. His malignant narcissism would not allow him to do that. That, IMHO, makes him a very dangerous person. This was a layup and he never even thought about putting the ball in the hoop.

I have nothing to say for the Baby Buckley piece, except, “Yeah, BabyB, a gracius declination would have been the civilized, sane, and gentlemanly thing to do. You’re a genius. Now, go away.”
It’s interesting how the WSJ misses the biggest factor – as pretty much everyone “in public” has been doing so studiously. He got the award as an affirmative action honorific. Duh! Thanks for hiding from that obvious fact, guys. That’s the problem, these days. The Precedent won that award the day he was elected, basically. It was just a matter of signing the papers. The Nobel committee admitted so much when they said that they felt they had to give it to him before he screws everything up and it would be too much of a joke. (I’m paraphrasing, but that was the essence of what they said)
This was an affirmative action award, first and foremost.
