Video: Bolton says Nobel a political manipulation

posted at 2:33 pm on October 9, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Former UN Ambassador John Bolton talks about the trend of the Nobel committee in recent years to cheerlead political philosophies, especially to American voters, and gets to the heart of why many of us found it both risible and offensive. Risible in the sense that Obama had been President for 12 days when he got nominated and hasn’t accomplished anything on the world stage since — no new treaties, no peace brokering, and certainly no change in the Bush “war priorities” that they explicitly criticized in their 2002 award to Jimmy Carter. Offensive in the sense that it smacks of lecturing America on our foreign policy rather than focusing on real efforts for peace, a number of which the Nobel committee overlooked, although by this point it’s so unsurprising as to be only barely offensive:

Liberal writer Steve Kornacki actually expressed the problem better in telling Norway that it didn’t do anything to help Obama with this transparent attempt at manipulation:

But, see, the thing is, this Nobel stuff doesn’t help Obama at all. And actually, it makes things a lot worse for him here in America.

The problem is that the caricature Obama’s opponents on the right have been pushing for more than a year—that he’s a rhetorically gifted charmer who inspires worshipful adoration from college kids and the French but who doesn’t actually know how to accomplish things—is starting to bleed over into the mainstream. …

When Americans elect a new leader, they don’t want end zone celebrations until they see some touchdowns. And when they look at Obama’s record right now, they don’t even see a field goal. (Hopefully these American football references aren’t confusing you!)

So when they see that Obama is going to receive the Nobel Peace Prize even though he may soon send tens of thousands of fresh troops to a war that’s probably unwinnable, well, it makes it a lot easier for them to buy into what the right’s been saying—that gullible Americans and socialist Europeans have been seduced by a fantasy.

The early reaction to your Nobel decision here in America is revealing: Even Obama’s own supporters don’t feel too good about this. One of them, a rather liberal friend of ours, just wrote on her Facebook page: “I now have every hope of winning the Nobel Peace Prize. I’m a great speech writer and I’m full of good intentions.”

This is exactly what the right has been trying to get Americans to say and think for a year. You mean well, Norway, we know. But in one fell swoop, you’ve just advanced their cause immeasurably.

Which brings me to a question I’ve been considering ever since I heard the news this morning. Clearly, the Nobel committee wanted to push Obama away from military engagements. But does this do the opposite? With the Nobel in his pocket, can he now argue for increased military resources in Afghanistan with a significant increase in political cover against the left wing of his party, which has greatly resisted it? Take the poll below:

This absurd prize (Bleeds Blue called it “absurd”, so he’s the ‘terrorist’) will have no effect on Precedent Hussein’s Afghanistan strategy. The Precedent will continue in Afghanistan with whatever will hurt the US most (dithering and bleeding our troops, essentially) and denigrate and demean our nation in the worst possible way. The Absurd Prize will have no effect on that, at all.

Count on Obama to do what he has always done. Delay in the name of deliberation. Create a plethora of reports covering every possible outcome. Wait till the last minute, and then continue to prevaricate. Make an arbitrary decision when it cannot be put off anymore. Blame any fallout on those who gave him advice or on his political opponants. Bask in the accolades of a cheering press corp.

By now, this procedure has become routine.

Let’s not forget to keep this in mind and spread it around:

According to the rules of the Nobel Prize nomination, a candidate receives an invitation for submission as a Nobel Peace candidate in September of the previous year, and must respond by the 1st of the subsequent February. That’s right, in September of 2008, when nobody had even voted for the current President, Mr. Obama was under the illusion that he was qualified for a Nobel Peace Prize based on a few years as a community organizer, a little time in the Illinois legislature, an incomplete term in the United States’ Senate, and a couple of books about his favorite topic — himself.

brianpierre on October 9, 2009 at 2:54 PM

My amateur armchair psychologist reading of Obama is that the Nobel Committee’s not so subtle push toward disengagement and even appeasement will have only a little effect on Obama. He is so incredibly narcissistic that only a huge outside influence would matter. However, it does increase the temptation Obama faces — and probably would like to indulge — to quietly withdraw from Afghanistan and take a soft, creampuff line against Iran’s nuclear weapons program.

It is also possible that the worldwide near unanimous incredulity at this choice of Nobel Prize will, at long last, jolt the Committee into a serious reform of their decision making process so that future awards actually mean something. With today’s award, they reached redutio ad absurdum. It could hardly go lower.

John Bolton is a sharp guy. He is terrific on foreign policy. Following his recess appt the left tried to berate and dismantle him much to the delight of their emptyheaded followers. Everyone should listen to him more as he has lots to say.

rjoco1 on October 9, 2009 at 2:56 PM

So when they see that Obama is going to receive the Nobel Peace Prize even though he may soon send tens of thousands of fresh troops to a war that’s probably unwinnable, well, it makes it a lot easier for them to buy into what the right’s been saying—that gullible Americans and socialist Europeans have been seduced by a fantasy.

Obama has already increased the American troop level in Afghanistan by tens of thousands (by about 60% as I recall). He promised to get U.S. troops out of Iraq (down to a “residual” force which would presumably be no more than 20,000 to 30,000) in 16 months. So far, after more than 8 months, he has only withdrawn several thousand, last I heard. He probably now has more troops in combined Iraq/Afghanistan than when he took over from Bush.

Not my President Obama has his feet being held to the fire now. If he bucks the sweet nothings that the Nobel cabal has blared to the world, he will forsake the entire world it would seem.

But, he has to toe the line right now in order to remain popular and be re-elected to a second term. He would then be termed out with nothing to lose. A second term will cement his legacy when he can do anything he wants to. Obama once said, You ain’t seen nothing yet.” I believe he was referring to his anticipated second term.

Our only hope is if he is a lame duck President during his second term. Otherwise, the proverbial $hit is surely going to hit the fan if he and a Democrat dominated Senate/Congress has carte blanche to do anything and everything their hearts desire. They have that now, but a second term for Obama is at stake, so they toe the line and will continue to, for now.

Kristol: Liberalism’s Gorbachev?

Mikhail Gorbachev won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990. A year later, he was out of power and the Soviet Union had dissolved.

I don’t mean to compare Barack Obama to Gorbachev, who was, whatever his faults, a truly historic and courageous figure. But let’s hope the parallel extends this far: that a year from now the Democrats suffer a major electoral repudiation, and that the New Liberalism goes the way of Reform Communism. And that, beginning in 2013, Obama will have lots of free time to spend hobnobbing with Gorbachev on the international celebrity circuit.

I think it forces his hand to give McChrystal every last soldier he’s been asking for. Anything less, and the claim that Obama is putting his personal glory ahead of the interests of the nation suddenly becomes very tangible even to apolitical Americans.

If Obama were inclined to reduce the troop commitment, he should have declined the Nobel Prize. By accpeting it, I think he HAS to give McChrystal what he wants.

This Peace Prize has been a joke for decades; The ironic part about it is, that the money that comes with it, helps keep poor people around the world, in poverty.
And it’s been awarded to known terrorists-Yasser Arafat.

Cybergeezer on October 9, 2009 at 3:36 PM

This Nobel prize is a transparent attempt by Europe to say “We’re sorry Obama for making you look like a complete ass on the world stage in regard to the International Olympic Committee”. Please accept this consolation prize instead you egomaniacal egoist you! At least with Al Gore and Jimmah Carter you could at least kinda sorta see where they were going with it, but how else can you explain this obsequious attempt at international sycophancy?

That’s it in a nutshell: Consolation prize

alohapundit on October 9, 2009 at 3:37 PM

Needless to say; The money awarded to Arafat went to Hezbollah for continued terrorist attacks on and in Israel.

I think the award is for effectively neutering the United States, when Rogue Countries are building up arms against the Free World.

A picture speaks a thousand (maybe million) words. LOL. Just for Globama.
