Video: Bolton says Nobel a political manipulation

Former UN Ambassador John Bolton talks about the trend of the Nobel committee in recent years to cheerlead political philosophies, especially to American voters, and gets to the heart of why many of us found it both risible and offensive. Risible in the sense that Obama had been President for 12 days when he got nominated and hasn’t accomplished anything on the world stage since — no new treaties, no peace brokering, and certainly no change in the Bush “war priorities” that they explicitly criticized in their 2002 award to Jimmy Carter. Offensive in the sense that it smacks of lecturing America on our foreign policy rather than focusing on real efforts for peace, a number of which the Nobel committee overlooked, although by this point it’s so unsurprising as to be only barely offensive:
Liberal writer Steve Kornacki actually expressed the problem better in telling Norway that it didn’t do anything to help Obama with this transparent attempt at manipulation:
But, see, the thing is, this Nobel stuff doesn’t help Obama at all. And actually, it makes things a lot worse for him here in America.
The problem is that the caricature Obama’s opponents on the right have been pushing for more than a year—that he’s a rhetorically gifted charmer who inspires worshipful adoration from college kids and the French but who doesn’t actually know how to accomplish things—is starting to bleed over into the mainstream. …
When Americans elect a new leader, they don’t want end zone celebrations until they see some touchdowns. And when they look at Obama’s record right now, they don’t even see a field goal. (Hopefully these American football references aren’t confusing you!)
So when they see that Obama is going to receive the Nobel Peace Prize even though he may soon send tens of thousands of fresh troops to a war that’s probably unwinnable, well, it makes it a lot easier for them to buy into what the right’s been saying—that gullible Americans and socialist Europeans have been seduced by a fantasy.
The early reaction to your Nobel decision here in America is revealing: Even Obama’s own supporters don’t feel too good about this. One of them, a rather liberal friend of ours, just wrote on her Facebook page: “I now have every hope of winning the Nobel Peace Prize. I’m a great speech writer and I’m full of good intentions.”
This is exactly what the right has been trying to get Americans to say and think for a year. You mean well, Norway, we know. But in one fell swoop, you’ve just advanced their cause immeasurably.
Which brings me to a question I’ve been considering ever since I heard the news this morning. Clearly, the Nobel committee wanted to push Obama away from military engagements. But does this do the opposite? With the Nobel in his pocket, can he now argue for increased military resources in Afghanistan with a significant increase in political cover against the left wing of his party, which has greatly resisted it? Take the poll below:

Heh, heh; And everybody thinks Obama went to Copenhagen for the Olympics! The “Campaigner in Chief was there to campaign for the Nobel.
He’s slick, isn’t he?

“BREAKING NEWS”- SP (Subjugated Press) – It was announced today that the French have renamed the Eiffel Tower the BarryO Tower. Not to be outdone, Gov. Patterson of New York, hoping to get invited to have a beer at the Whitehouse, has renamed the Statue of Liberty the Statue of Obamaramarama. As this mania suffuses the globe the Chinese have announced that as of tomorrow, the Mao Revolution will be known as the B’SO Revolution. All will be sending Pres. Obama a million bucks, a robe, and a neck brace to keep that big old noggin from tumping over.

I agree the Nobel has no impact on Afghanistan. I think all this does is push even more independent/disinterested voters from thinking Obama is the new fresh face to thinking Obama is a joke and just another politician.

Eh. This prize won’t encourage Obama to do anything except admire himself in the mirror a little while longer every morning.

The Prize will give Obama more problems/solutions in dealing with Iran.
The Iranians know that between now and December 10 (when Obama picks up his prize) they do not have to worry about any sanctions or threats from the U.S.
Obama is not going to risk Iran screaming to the world, “But the Nobel Peace Prize winner is threatening us – don`t give him the prize!”
And the Iranians will continue to us this leverage against Obama. So will any other unfriendlies against the US.
I would think that other world leaders are a bit P.O.ed that Obama got this award for doing nothing. “What did he do to deserve it and why didn`t I get one?”
Putin can say that it was he who pushed Obama into stopping the missile deployment in Poland and the Czech Republic. Putin can say it was he who has been pushing to reduce nuclear weapons. So why didn`t Putin get the Nobel?
This will cause a colder climate between Obama and other leaders.

Now hold on just a minute. We all know the climate is warming.

I bet the International Olympic Committee is kicking themselves right now. They should have added the “hope and change” criteria to their evaluations.
tommer74 on October 9, 2009 at 4:10 PM
from the Puffingtom Post
In a more blunt assessment, the right wing blog Hot Air accuses the committee of turning “the Peace Prize into a ‘f*** Bush’ award by bestowing it on a liberal American Democrat.”
I can’t go back and read all the posts, but I wonder, did the blog Hot Air say this (Ed or All) or was it a commenter?
If the latter, Puffington is being a bit disingenuous..
do they attribute everything a commenter says to the blog itself…

faraway on October 9, 2009 at 4:18 PM
OT: There are many excellent Top 10 Stache lists available on the web and someone needs to immediately add Bolton to the number one spot of several of them. Period. (OT: OT: Can a stache be copyrighted? For example, could I sell that Stache? Well, not that exact Stache, but one that looks a lot like that stache? I could have an entire line of stachees: The Bolton; The Reynolds; The Norris; aaahhhh… I can see the billz rollin in.)
j_galt on October 9, 2009 at 4:21 PM
Wait what is wrong with the comment? For over 8 years every single peace prize has been a (expletive) Bush. Jimmah Carter’s prize especially. Look at what was going on in the world when they gave it to ol’ Peanuts. European elites and self proclaimed intellectuals were giving a great big (expletive) you Bush!

Obama says Nobel Peace Prize is “call to action”
InTrade had action with Hu Jia, Morgan Tsvangirai, Thich Quang Do, Ingrid Betancourt, Nicolas Sarkozy, Tony Blair, with Pete Seeger having the most, just behind “Anyone else.”
Obama was listed but had no action as did Michael Jackson and Bono.
J_Crater on October 9, 2009 at 4:29 PM
The only reaction is to laugh. You can’t take it seriously. So when it comes up in conversation don’t attack Bambi, don’t attack the Nobel committee. Just laugh.
PackerBronco on October 9, 2009 at 4:33 PM
As has been noticed, the Peace Prize historically has gone to either diplomats (Roosevelt for Russo/Japanese war, Wilson for League of Nations) or dissidents (Walesa, et al.).
My guess is that the committee views Obama as a dissident.
Tongue in cheek (I think).

Disgusting. I am so tired of being lectured by liars, thieves and mass murderers.
Terrye on October 9, 2009 at 4:49 PM
My guess is we will see the administration vote present. In other words, Obama will try and split the difference between the two primary options proposed by those around him.
1. His military commander wants troops on the ground.
2. His dim witted VP and the liberal wing want a remote war with SF and drones.
Solution:
Nominal increase in troop strength and “working with the international community…blah, blah, blah”
In addition, we are increasing our commitment to provide SF and drones……
Result:
Worst of both worlds while essentially trying to maintain the status quo. A war of incrementalism. President Obama may I introduce you to your strategist, Robert McNamara.
Whiz kid one meet Whiz kid two.

“Video: Bolton says Nobel a political manipulation”
I didn’t have time to watch the video, and I’m not entirely sure why Michael Bolton is weighing in on this subject, but I totally agree with him.

He went to Copenhagen and voted PRESENT!
Cybergeezer on October 9, 2009 at 5:40 PM
The Nobel Peace Prize might very well make Obama tougher in Afghanistan.
Now he has to watch what he does so that it will not appear that he has taken the bait from the Nobel committee, that he has been manipulated by the committee.
On the other hand, the American left will be shouting at Obama that their positions have been validated by world opinion.
The prize makes life more complicated for Obama.

Dear Afghanistan (and Pakistan)…
We are sorry. We tried to tell the people of this nation that they were choosing a liar, cheat and worthless sack of suet. He wasn’t fit to clerk for a county judge, let alone hold public office. We tried and failed to make them wake up.
Now that he’s been anointed with his new “peace prize” we both know where the peace is going to be. It’s going to be over the graves of your people.
Barack Obama is going to throw your people under the bus. You weren’t “enough” for him to fight for. He’s just not that into you. No matter how many cliches one uses the fact is that Obama is going to betray you unto your enemies and you won’t even get Judas’ kiss. He did manage to get more than Judas got, though. Or at least it is today. In a few more weeks of his leadership that million will soon be worth less than the thirty pieces of silver.
As the dark night of jihadi Islam falls over your lands and your people die by the thousands Obama will not even remember having promised to save you.
We are sorry we could not stop this from coming to pass.

What do you expect? Adolf Hitler was nominated for the Nobel in 1939, (I bet the Norwegians wished they could take THAT back, Nazi Germany invaded Norway 6 months later)
Exactly what did they give this prize to this fake, Obama?, for violating this country’s Constitution more than all other Presidents combined or was it because Obama can’t open his mouth without lying?

I got up this morning and read the local zzzzzzz of a newspaper, and what did I see in the front page? You guessed it! “Obama joins elite group as prize winner”, (and it’s not an AP headline), so local libby made it up all by them selves! The kicker, it did not show pics of Carter or Arafat or other losers that have gotten the award, but put Obama right in the center of a line of three pictures, between Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. Haaaaaaaa! Good thing I wasn’t drinking coffee, I would have spit it all over the newspaper laughing! However, if you kept reading, it did mention that Carter had previously won the award.

I agree that you should have added a have no effect on Obama option. As I mentioned in the other thread, the concern that it might is probobly the reason behind making it unconstitutional for officials in office to accept gifts/titles without congressional consent (see above link).
