Quote of the day
posted at 10:25 pm on October 9, 2009 by Allahpundit
“Among these crosscurrents, my thesis is simple: The question of whether America is in decline cannot be answered yes or no. There is no yes or no. Both answers are wrong, because the assumption that somehow there exists some predetermined inevitable trajectory, the result of uncontrollable external forces, is wrong. Nothing is inevitable. Nothing is written. For America today, decline is not a condition. Decline is a choice. Two decades into the unipolar world that came about with the fall of the Soviet Union, America is in the position of deciding whether to abdicate or retain its dominance. Decline–or continued ascendancy–is in our hands.”

What will Mr. Nobel Peace Prize decide?

It is not so much about decline. Nothing is inevitable, obviously, but America is headed into dissolution.

Dr. Krauthammer is the voice of reason…I wish obama would pull his head out and listen to him…

I don’t see us ascending relatively faster than China without widespread deregulation and tax reform… and that’s just economically speaking. We would also need strong American-centric leadership, which we currently do not have.

The fate of America is not yet written. Nothing in human affairs is inevitable. If America withers and dies it will do so where it has always lived and thrived – in the hearts and minds of its people. The foulest treachery can never destroy it nor can the most eloquent leadership breath life into its rancid corpse. It lives or dies with us!
If we have the courage to stand up and be free, to assume the responsibility for ourselves, then America can live on in a sunlit world to be the hope of all humanity. But if we fail – if we cower in nightmares of victimhood and anxious dependence, waiting passively to be saved by some promised messiah, then we stand at the terrible edge of a new dark age. For if America dies, the small star of hope for all the world flickers and dies with it and “the last best hope of Earth” will have indeed been meanly lost.
It’s not up to some leader or messiah to save America. It’s up to us – Americans!

Darvin Dowdy on October 9, 2009 at 11:27 PM
Decline being a choice is overly simple, but largely on the mark. However, we have had no administration or congress in this unipolar world that has made the choices to secure dominance. The opportunity to make Krauthammer’s ‘choice’ seems to have past.
From here on out, the reality of relative decline is something best understood sooner rather than later, even while we try and figure out how to either slow or reverse it.

If you’re going to take a fairly unorthodox position, like calling Krauthammer a “fool,” you might want to back it with a little evidence, or at least explication.

Not necessarily. Phoenix rising … A nation based on the American foundations and traditions must continue. There has to be a truly individualistic nation somewhere in the world.
Unfortunately, breaking something (especially something amazingly complex) is the easiest thing to do. They are running our monetary system into the ground, at a very bad time. The credit crisis is not over. This is just the eye of the storm, to my mind. And, the way this Congress rams stuff through when they think they are able, is quite disconcerting. It only takes enough of a expansion of the federal government, or encroachment into the states and people’s everyday lives, to blow this nation apart.
I guess the proper analogy is that of a 12 year old playing as captain of an aircraft carrier. It’s a very dangerous situation, especially if the kid is actually being taken seriously. Our 12 year old is arrogant, stupid, and hates aircraft carriers. Put that ship in dangerous waters, and you pretty much know it’s f#cked. And the Nobel Prize shows that the world is egging the kid on and daring him to do silly, stupid sh!t.
The world really doesn’t know what it’s in for. Neither do the leftists, here.

Like everyone else I have to admit I’ve had moments of doubt regarding the momentum of America, which on the face of the factoids, seems to be the case.
Some years ago I was donating blood, as was my habit, but due to a lack of focus, failed to have breadfast that day, and started to pass out on the table. A nurse slapped me silly and brought me around just before the room went black.
I’m kinda wondering if this Administration and Congress is the slap America needs to bring it back from the brink of a malaise blackout? Providence alone may be guiding the events to restore us from the abyss.
Believing that more people prefer the September 2009 America over the September 2001 America would strain credulity a bit too much.

1. Republican president becomes very unpopular and a Democrat is elected by a wide margin.
2. Democrat is elected on a message of hope and change, but doesn’t deliver.
3. Democrat apologizes for America and emasculates military.
4. U.S. economy begins to crack, other countries look for other places to put money.
5. Federal Reserve policy leads to monetary instability.
6. Dollar drops precipitously.
7. Botched deficit spending [tax refunds of the 70s].
=== Things that have yet to be realized ===
8. Major foreign policy crisis [could be Afghanistan]
9. Democrat loses in landslide.
10. U.S. recovers.

To be honest – it’s not just one administration. We’ve been on an unsustainable trajectory since the New Deal. No government can take care of all the people’s needs. This world has hardship in it. Some people are lifted up and some are smacked down. It is not fair – but it is the nature of the world. No human institution or government can change that.
Let’s say that Obama, Pelosi, and Reed resigned today. And lets say all the Democrats walked out of Congress and we replaced them with Republicans …
Is anyone under any delusion that the problems would be fixed? We still serious shortfalls in Medicare, Social Security and Prescription drugs at the 75 year point – and that was before the depression hit. We have to make major cuts to entitlements and we have a population of clingers that need to be taught independence.
To do these things – we cannot simply rely on the old GOP Ayatollahs. They will gain power – and they will hold it a few years before squandering it. They will never address the issues.
We need to get grassroots patriots into government to fix it. But even then – even if they address the issues that need to be addressed and fix Medicare, Social Security and other entitlements – the things they do will not make them popular with huge swaths of the nation. And the things they do could cause unrest within the nation.
This is the dark position we find ourselves in. We know the cure – but the cure could kill us.

Are we not still Americans? Let’s stop complaining about the current administration’s colossal power grab and start rejecting it outright. Enough already – we can say no without fear and we must.
There are a myriad of us with the testicular fortitude and belief in our generous exceptionalism to reject their agenda. We no doubt outnumber the progressive union socialists. The collective polls indicate that the majority of us do not want the current health care reform. Why then does the administration wish to shove it down our throats? What is in it for them and theirs?
One last point, where does the Constitution grant the Federal government the ability to impose health care coverage upon us as a people? Where is the Constitutional challenge to the entire notion? Anyone?
Speak loudly and boldly – 2010 is just around the corner.

Reagan said freedom is never more than one generation from extinction. We have a generation who has never had to take any responsibility. We have a President who does not share any experiences of America with the rest of us. What he has grown up with is a far left view of America as evil. He is carrying out the Cloward – Piven strategy. His intention is to bankrupt the country so we are no longer a superpower and assume our “rightful” place in the world. Socialization of healthcare has nothing to do with healthcare and everything to do with control. If that succeeds America as we have known it will be gone.

There was a change of tactics that would allow the free world to embrace Communism by the law of degenerating democracies, whereby an ever expanding democracy will eventually, and always, devolve into parasite v host and the parasite will always win by the simple fact that most people will choose to be parasites instead of hosts.

No – the cure will not kill us. Indifference and apathy, on its continued trajectory will deplete our nation. The cure will sustain the great nation for whom so many have sacrificed.
Seriously, why does the tone of most of these posts sound defeated? The fight, regardless of party affiliation, for economic and moral responsibility has begun again. I rejoice in the new found activism of conservatives of both parties.

I know that, dude, that’s why I’m reveling in it. I just hope that some German reading this doesn’t try to demonstrate a sense of humor, because that would be just toooo alarming.

I’m starting to feel better. Obama getting the Nobel is like a TIME cover featuring a snorting Wall St bull laced by a red ascending chart line.
In Wall St parlance, it’s time to short Obama. He’s peaked.
Funny how Obama got the Nobel just like he got the presidency. Even many of his admirers thought he would certainly win someday, but NOW?
It’s also time to realize that given Obama’s fantasies, the fact that he hasn’t accomplished anything meaningful is very good news. The sword of govt tyranny still hangs over our necks, but we still breathe. It’s 13 months until the next election.
The economy and Afghanistan await. There is no hiding place.
