Pawlenty slams Baucus plan

Neil Cavuto asks the right questions of Tim Pawlenty, whose Freedom First PAC just launched to answer such questions. Pawlenty does well here, if a bit subdued and wonkish, on the issue. Cavuto asks Pawlenty whether the CBO’s preliminary analysis has neutered Republicans objections, and Pawlenty offers a

Not at all, Neil, and let me give you one example. The Democrats for a generation have been pummeling Republicans about the head and shoulder about real or perceived cuts in Medicare. Now you have a Democratic majority in the United States Congress saying that a centerpiece of the savings in this bill will come from cuts in Medicare. … This thing still features a bucketload of tax increases.

Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar may speak out now against the medical-device tax, but in the end, they’ll vote for it if they can’t strip out that tax. This is a better tack to take for Republicans than the Medicare cuts, as it will impact a much broader range of Americans than just the Medicare cuts. How broad? One physician explained the impact of the device tax alone on care and costs in an e-mail to me yesterday:

As a pathologist, there are numerous things that are being overlooked, probably because the general public doesn’t understand. If you look at the 49 page list of medical devices, there are a bunch of laboratory items. If you look at the codes, HE is hematology, CH is chemistry, IM is immunology, TX is toxicology, AN is analyzer…The analyzers or laboratory instruments are taxed. The calibrators to calibrate the analyzers are taxed. The controls which are known samples that are run 3 times a day to ensure that the analyzer is working are taxed. Numerous testing assays which include the reagents to run the test are taxed. So you could be looking at one lab test having a tax on the analyzer (granted most analyzers run more than one test, but not always), calibrators taxed, controls taxed and reagents taxed. Hell, they even tax the rack to hold the tube for a hematocrit. See hematocrit, tube, rack, sealer, holder. Costs will go up across the board for lab work. CBC, chemistries, blood typing, viral testing, coagulation studies, immunoassay for troponin to see if someone is having a heart attack and on and on. It is truly amazing.

The device tax is a cost multiplier beyond imagination, and it will drive costs up in a very dishonest manner — behind the scenes, using the pricing opacity in the current system as a screen. Consumers will only see prices raised indirectly, through higher premiums and eventually rationing of services.

The preliminary CBO scoring will force Republicans to get specific about all of these hidden economic disasters in the Baucus plan, rather than just rely on deficit scoring, at least until it gets turned into legislative language in the Senate. That may mean more work for the GOP, but it will result in better rebuttals and more clarity on the disaster that ObamaCare means for the US.

It is also a much better line of attack since Medicare does need cuts, or at least a slow down in the trajectory of growth (which is Washington speak for cuts anyway).

The Baucus Bill…

Doesn’t that sound like the name of a cowboy?

“Awright Baucus Bill, I’m a givin you 2 hours to get outta town or there’ll be trouble…”

He’s not my choice but he is no A$$CLOWN. He has been a damn good governor and saved my state from pure socialism on numerous occassions by standing up and saying no. He’d be a better nominee than McCain was.

This is not a bug, it is a feature. Statists love hidden taxes sinces it feeds their desire to blame business for the woes of the consumer. Most consumers do not pick up on these hidden taxes (e.g., business property taxes) and there impact on teh price they pay. The ignorant focus their blame on business and clamor for politicians to “do something.”

Yes, but has Pawlenty ever won a Peace Prize?

lorien1973 on October 9, 2009 at 12:29 PM

Always remember, this is the same governor who signed the state wide smoking ban, the 25% renewable energy bill and signed a bill that specifically preempted and prevented Hennepin County (where Minneapolis is located) residents from voting down a county tax increase that funds the Twins Stadium.
Yes, that Governor Pawlenty.

- state wide smoking ban: Dang!
- the 25% renewable energy bill: Dang!
- signed a bill that specifically prevented Hennepin County residents from voting down a county tax increase: Dang!

Hopefully his good decisions out wreigh these misguided decisions. After one season outside, The Twins are going to want back in that dome.

Palin was right about the death panels, they come in the form of taxes, too. Can’t afford to pay for those tests, can’t treat you for maybe having a heart attack. Bingo, hello, pearly gates.

Kissmygrits on October 9, 2009 at 1:04 PM

There is a fine line between “slightly wonkish” and “content free”. I’m glad he’s “slightly wonkish”.

unclesmrgol on October 9, 2009 at 1:11 PM

you people complaining about Pawlenty can just chill.

At this stage you’ll do anything to get rid of Obama. Imagine what that will be like in three years. All this talk about a third party won’t materialize anything either. If it came down to Pawlenty vs. Obama yu’d people vote for Pawlenty to get rid of Obama, because you know anything else guarantees a second term.

Tim Pawlenty on the Nobel Prize via Politico:

Pawlenty speaking on NPR, said there “will be some people who are saying ‘Was it based on good intentions and thoughts or is it going to be based on good results?’”

“But I think the appropriate response is when anybody wins a Nobel Prize, this is a very noteworthy development and designation and I think the appropriate response is to say ‘Congratulations,’”" said the Minnesota governor.

Just because the CBO calls the Obama via Baucus lifestyle dominion bill deficit neutral doesn’t have a blessed thing to do with the Democrats taxing us and our employers to death in order to pay for it.

This guy is as exciting as watching paint dry!

I LOVE Ronald Reagan, LOVE HIM, but screw the 11th Commandment!

We can NOT afford to allow another Big Government “progressive” Republican to get within a million miles of the Oval Office, period.

This guy didn’t even get involved when Al Franken and ACORN stole the election from Norm Coleman. I mean how hard would THAT have been to take a stand on.

No, no, no, NO!

I rather see all out war in the party, and a hostile takeover by CONSERVATIVES than any more milquetoast, moderate, go-along-to-get-along, limp you know what losers that put you to sleep!

We have our nominee for 2012, and we all know who she is.

It’s time to stop worrying about 2012, that’s in good hands. Let’s concentrate on 2010 and flushing out the sewer that is Congress!

Bring it!

You’ve OBVIOUSLY never seen Palin debate! Now she beat Biden handily, but was having to take direction from Johnny Mac’s brain trust.

Go look at some of her past debates against other Republicans! WOW!

A strong primary challenge will be the best thing ever for the ‘Cuda, it will further separate her from the pack of losers the GOP establishment will sling against the wall hoping one will stick!

But my point was, and I’ll make it again, we have 2012 covered. We MUST concentrate on 2010, or 2012 won’t even matter.

With very few exceptions no one currently in the House should have a job to return to after the November elections.

Same goes for the open Senate Seats.

One doesn’t have to pull their shoes off to count the ones worth keeping!

THAT’S they big picture.

Sarah will take care of 2012.

We’ve been over this before. Hot Air isn’t “anti-Palin.” AP is cautious about Palin. A “Palin-agnostic” I believe was the phrase. You can hunt back and find the threads upon threads of this discussion.

See, it’s already happening……breaking Reagan’s rule because the clear front runner is Palin.

Actually, calling her an Anointed One is criticizing her if that’s what some people want to do. Real examples of the commanment breaking can be read further upthread (flat out attacks on Pawlenty). I’m more concerned with a corollary on this rule… by anointing her the de facto nominee without discussion or a primary campaign, you are de facto criticizing the other Republican hopefuls.

The internet is alive with the sound of people analyzing the CBO’s “scoring” of the Max Baucus aka Senate Finance Committee Health Care Bill.
