Limbaugh on the Nobel: They’re trying to get him to stand down in Afghanistan
posted at 5:26 pm on October 9, 2009 by Allahpundit
Seven-plus minutes of audio here on “the first post-accomplishment president,” but his point about Afghanistan is the crux of it. I noted this in the Nobel thread this morning but it bears repeating: For once, he and David Frum are in perfect sync.
That Nobel was not a gesture of Obama-worship by left-leaning Norwegians. It was the very opposite: It was a pre-emptive strike against Obama, an attempt to neutralize him. How can a Peace Nobelist strike Iranian nuclear plants? Or wage a protracted war in Afghanistan? Or tell the Palestinians, “Sorry, that’s the best offer, take it or leave it”? The hope of course is that he cannot.
Oh, now, be fair: He’s perfectly capable of abandoning Afghanistan to the Taliban without any Euro encouragement. Tapper makes a clever point, though, in noting how the award could potentially backfire by giving Obama political cover to embrace the hawk within. Now that he’s been anointed the prince of peace by the Nobel committee, any escalation in Afghanistan should presumably be supported by the “international community” as a measure taken for a just and noble purpose. Think that’s how it’ll play out? Click the image to watch.
Update: “This is a man of peace now.”

That’s a pretty good theory. I mean, how does Obama announce a 40,000 troop surge after accepting the Nobel prize?

He’s no hawk. Troop increase? 5000 for training Afghanis only. Iran? Nuclear within a year. Pirates? We already got one. NKorea? We’re beyond that now. Iraq? What’s that?

Obama should have refused the award. Instead he said he’ll donate the money to charity.
Not much different than John Kerry saying he threw his medals back when in fact he kept the medals and only threw the ribbons back.

In theory, I would say yes…but his lack of decisive action in the short term still points to the fact that he’s totally uninterested in pursuing a victory in Afghanistan. He has no intention of providing the troops that his generals have asked for – he’s purposefully letting our troops swing in the wind, undermining the very foundation of the U.S. economy, and driving us so far in the fiscal hole that our great-grandkids won’t be able to dig us out. That’s why he won…he’s remaking America in the image that pleases socialist Europe, and they’re lovin’ it.

Nope.
I like Tapper…I think he’s one of the very few honest liberal journalists (out of maybe, a field of 3)…but he always goes way out of his way to find the most flattering interpretations of Obama’s actions…then comes back to earth. There is no inner-hawk in Obama…against foreign enemies at least.
AUINSC on October 9, 2009 at 5:45 PM
I think that was just part of their intent. They want cap and trade, they want the UN making our foreign policy, they want to run the US rather than having some pesky cowboy American doing it for them…and Obama is their best shot.
But, the problem with Obama leaving Afghanistan, is that AlQaida and the Taliban are not necessarily on the same page as the Euro weenies.

That’s pretty much it. Sums up the UN as well. It’s the award for talking a good game, kicking the can down the road, acheiving temporary meaningless periods peace (usually observed by one side) that gets more people killed in the long run.
It’s also the award for pseudo-leaders to enhance their own legacy.
Obama has confirmed a lot of people’s worst fears with his call to action comments.
Well played, Socialist Scum.

The timing of this triumph was perfect. Barry hasn’t achieved anything, aside from reaching the pinnacle of verbosity. So, the Nobel is exactly what Barry needed to successfully launch his inaction and ambivalence program, and to simultaneously inaugurate the swiftest decline ever recorded of the most powerful nation on earth. This will undoubtedly be Barry’s moment to finally grab glory— His supreme accomplishment.

Unfortunately for us, Dear Leader is a fool and would likely do the opposite.
nyx on October 9, 2009 at 6:14 PM
Limbaugh and Frum are absolutely right on this. The world has reached the right conclusion on Obama, that this is a guy who, above all, wants to be adored. They know by giving this to him up front, he will be putty in their hands. If anyone held up hope that our national interests will play a key role in decisions, they can give up those thoughts now. It’s all going to be about how he is received worldwide. It always was going to be that way anyway, but it should be obvious to all now if it wasn’t already.
That being said, I’m not sure that Obama really wants this. The jokes will practically write themselves now. All it takes are people willing to say them, and they’re starting to. It’s become too difficult to ignore.
