White House can’t stop crying about all the bad press it gets

posted at 6:11 pm on October 8, 2009 by Allahpundit

Fun stuff, especially coming hot on the heels of Axelrod’s fine whine to Roger Ailes. Incredible though it may seem, we may be nearing the point where the White House starts blaming Obama’s political failures on … a biased media.

All the criticism, both fair and misleading, took a toll, regularly knocking the White House off message. So a new White House strategy has emerged: rather than just giving reporters ammunition to “fact-check” Obama’s many critics, the White House decided it would become a player, issuing biting attacks on those pundits, politicians and outlets that make what the White House believes to be misleading or simply false claims, like the assertion that health-care reform would establish new “sex clinics” in schools. Obama, fresh from his vacation on Martha’s Vineyard, cheered on the effort, telling his aides he wanted to “call ‘em out.”

The take-no-prisoners turn has come as a surprise to some in the press, considering the largely favorable coverage that candidate Obama received last fall and given the President’s vows to lower the rhetorical temperature in Washington and not pay attention to cable hyperbole. Instead, the White House blog now issues regular denunciations of the Administration’s critics, including a recent post that announced “Fox lies” and suggested that the cable network was unpatriotic for criticizing Obama’s 2016 Olympics effort…

The general in this war is Dunn, 51, a veteran campaign strategist who arrived at the White House in May. She has been a force in Democratic campaigns since the late 1980s and helmed Obama’s rapid-response operation during his run. At the White House, she has become a devoted consumer of conservative-media reports and a fierce critic of Fox News, leading the Administration’s effort to block officials, including Obama, from appearing on the network. “It’s opinion journalism masquerading as news,” Dunn says. “They are boosting their audience. But that doesn’t mean we are going to sit back.”

This comes on the very day that the new Quinnipiac bombshell finding voters still oppose ObamaCare, 40/47, was headlined this way by the AP: “Voters Back Obama Over Republicans on Health Care, Poll Finds.” I linked this a few months ago when it first came out, but given all the whining from the White House lately about the media, it pays to re-read Vanity Fair’s piece from July about just how excruciatingly cozy the relationship between them is. Why Axelrod and Emanuel feel the need to take shots at Glenn Beck via the White House blog when they’ve got major newspapers eager to play stenographer for them is beyond me. Exit quotation: “They have been handed a most remarkable historical moment—in which they get to remake the media in their own image. They have the power and they are the subject. These people in this White House are in greater control of the media than any administration before them.”

They’re complaining because they know that although ABC/CBS/NBC/CNN do the cheerleading, these old news networks (ONN) are impotent. They don’t turn the needle on public opinion.

On the other hand, Conservative Media is strong, and grows stronger the more the whining persists. This is a guaranteed loser for Obama. He and his genius advisors still don’t realize the unabashed power of Conservative Media.

The Dems should plan their strategy for 2010, when they are out of power in Congress (Republican House, Reid out as Senate Majority Leader). Expect to see lots of Olberman retrospectives on the Golden Age of Liberalism.

The funniest thing is how outraged the White House (not to mention the Lefty bloggers) is over Glenn Beck, speaking extemporaneously, mistakenly saying that the Vancouver Olympics lost over $1 Billion Dollars, when obviously Beck was thinking of the Montreal Olympics, which I believe lost $1.5 billion dollars. One would think the man who once said he was campaigning in all 57 states would be more understanding of someone mixing up Vancouver and Montreal.

There was never a single moment when White House staff decided the major media outlets were falling down on the job. There were instead several such moments.

Because, he said, check out the salaries they’re paying. No one with years of experience is going to go work in DC for 30-50 grand a year…you can’t live in DC on that. Like I said, don’t have any facts, but that would sure explain a lot of this nonsense (no offense against 30 somethings). Bush had a seasoned cabinet. Along these lines, I have an observation about Special Report with Brett Baier. To be sure, Baier is no Britt Hume, but I think he’s doing fine.

At any rate, for a while after he succeeded Hume, he continued to use Hume’s closing line: “Fair, Balanced, and Unafraid.” Somewhere along the line, however, he started closing with a different line–frankly, I can’t remember it because it’s kind of forgettable. I think it included a reference to “uncertain time.”

Anyway, I may be wrong about the timing, but no sooner did I hear reports that Axelrod had whined to Ailes over coffee in NYC than I began to hear Baier resume closing Special Report with the line, “Fair, Balanced, and Unafraid.” Indeed, I saw him do so tonight, and I could swear that he seemed to be taking a bit of relish in doing so.

Has anyone else noticed this?

To be sure, it’s a small marker, but if it is, in fact, a conscious thumb in the eye of the Obama administration, I like the subtle jab.

STFU, Axelrod. Quit whining and go back to doing your job.
