Video: “Pragmatist” candidate lectures America on fiscal responsibility

posted at 8:48 pm on October 8, 2009 by Allahpundit

Dedicated to David Brooks, Christopher Buckley, Peggy Noonan, Kathleen Parker, and the rest of the right-wing intelligentsia who knew a solution-minded centrist when they saw one. The occasion for this reminiscence is the news that this year’s deficit has now hit $1.4 trillion — a drop in the bucket compared to what we’re in for over the next decade, and rest assured, every last cent of it will be blamed on George Bush and the recession. But pay attention: The point of the clip isn’t simply to beat up on The One for his profligacy but to tie it to his warnings about military decline, a timely point given our new “arrangement” in Afghanistan. One would think that a guy who was planning a major escalation of a war if elected would be extra careful not to go passing any new budget-busting domestic programs in the meantime. And yet, somehow, we’ve arrived at the opposite outcome, with an almost trillion-dollar health-care bill on the table and the escalation on the brink of being canceled now that we’ve re-classified the enemy out of existence. Looking back, it almost seems as though he was deliberately lying on the trail about Afghanistan and fiscal responsibility to get elected, doesn’t it?

Oh, in case you missed it in the update to Ed’s post earlier: The Cato Institute says that Baucus’s supposed deficit-reducing bill is going to cost a bit more than expected.

There are just too few Americans who are raising he1l, they are too concentrated on reality tv, American Idol and who Letterman is banging, and that indifference is just fine with the demorats. They will hear about this latest CBO number and say “hey it sounds good to me” and go back to the tv.

This tremendously unprepared rookie is going to do a lot of damage while he’s in office. We’ll be dealing with the wreckage for decades just like the failures of Carter (mishandling Iran) and Clinton (mishandling Al Qaeda) haunted us for years. George W. Republicans attack Obama on U.S. dollar By Tabassum Zakaria

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Leading Republicans echoed Sarah Palin on Thursday in attacking President Barack Obama over the weakness of the U.S. dollar.

Analysts warn it is risky business playing politics with the U.S. currency, which has traditionally been off limits as a play to score points against political opponents.

That taboo appears to have been broken.

Palin, the former Republican vice presidential candidate and ex-governor of Alaska, launched her dollar criticism on her Facebook page. She linked dollar weakness to U.S. dependence on foreign oil, large U.S. deficits and questions about whether the dollar deserves to retain its vaunted status of reserve currency.

“We can see the effect of this in the price of gold, which hit a record high today in response to fears about the weakened dollar,” Palin wrote on Facebook this week.

“All of this is a result of our out-of-control debt. This is why we need to rein in spending, and this is also why we need energy independence.”

Republicans in Congress said the previous Republican administration of former President George W. Bush also deserved blame for dollar weakness but, since taking office on January 20, Democrat Obama was calling the shots.

“I agree with her,” Senator Charles Grassley, top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, said when asked by Reuters about Palin’s dollar criticism.

“A lot of the recession we are in now goes back to Bush. But the extent to which we passed the $787 billion stimulus bill that is not doing any good — this president is responsible for,” he said.

“It is not the Bush administration anymore. It is nine months into this administration. You can’t blame Bush anymore,” Grassley added.

SENSITIVE SUBJECT

The dollar is a sensitive subject and U.S. officials who are in office will almost always decline to discuss it in public for fear of moving the market.

Dollar weakness also strikes at the very heart of America’s image of itself as a world power.

“It sounds like the new frontier is the declining dollar,” Darrell West, director of governance studies at The Brookings Institution said.

“It’s unusual for there to be party attacks on the value of the dollar,” he said. “Historically that has been a bipartisan issue because you don’t want to play politics with the dollar, it’s a very risky game.”

I’ve been trying to understand this Obama guy for over a year.

I guess I’m one of those that just has a hard time believing that the stable America of soccer games, and politicians coming and going and nothing really world-shaking going on, has come to an end. I still am trying to come to grips with….

A. Oh, He’s just a fool.

2. Is he maybe just a tool?

3. Is he just a lame ignorant Liberal?

4. Is he really a committed Marxist dedicated to forcing America into decline because he really dislikes the Unjust America that we don’t see?

I guess it’s #4 for me because I just can’t see how any of the other choices really explains all the complete lunacy that we’re seeing.

And I’m sorry but Laura Bush is just a complete elitist idiot if she thinks that Obama is doing a good job. I guess when you’re in the RULING CLASS as long as your RULE is protected by other members of the club (Dole/Howard Baker/Clintons/Zbig Breshinski/etc.) you think everything is fine. When I hear RINO’s talking about WORKING TOGETHER WITH DEMOCRATS I just want to vomit.

I really, truly think that the GOP is now a lost cause. The party is so corrupt along with the Democrats that we’re slipping dangerously close to the point where something/someone outside politics is going to have to pull a CORAZON AQUINO, People power movement to save this country.

What are we going to do for the next 3 1/2 years people?

PappyD61 on October 8, 2009 at 9:47 PM

Page two

The danger is that partisan attacks can drive the dollar lower because of the appearance that the country is divided, West said.

“I don’t view this as a partisan thing. It is bad for America to have a policy of a weak dollar,” assistant Senate Republican leader Jon Kyl told Reuters when asked about Palin’s comments.

“All Treasury secretaries say, ‘Oh, our policy is to have a strong dollar.’ But the question is what do they do. I don’t think either this administration or the Bush administration have followed the appropriate policy,” Kyl said.

With the 2010 Congressional elections a year away, Republicans are seizing on opportunities to throw the Democrats off their stride. More Republicans were expected to take up dollar weakness as a tool to hammer the Obama administration, analysts said.

“It’ll be a straight line, dollar equals deficit,” Ethan Siegal, an analyst at The Washington Exchange, said.

“For the out party in the modern era there’s nothing off limits anymore,” he said. “The dollar certainly is not off limits.”

STAR POWER

Palin still has star power. Her comments resonate with a good segment of the conservative Republican base and with Americans who view her as talking “common sense” in the face of the country’s elites, analysts said.

Her written comments on the dollar made the front-page lead story of the Financial Times on Thursday.

Palin has successfully used Facebook to rally supporters of her viewpoint. The “death panels” term that rocked the healthcare debate during raucous summer town hall meetings sprung from a Palin Facebook post.

“She was the vice presidential candidate in the last election, that’s marquee status right there. There are no other Republicans who can say that who want to be the next president of the United States,” Siegal said. “So she gets a seat at the table just because of that.”

A weak dollar as representing a bad economy will be one of many lines of attack for Republicans against Obama and the Democrats, Norman Ornstein, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, said. “I don’t think it’s particularly smart.”

Having Palin lead the charge on this issue rather than someone strong in international economics is “a potentially shaky way to go,” he said.

But, Ornstein added, the view among some Americans that Palin reflects a more down-to-earth view was a “powerful, powerful theme.”

To do what, fight an armed insurrection? The same people who are too indifferent to call their legislators now are going to pick up a rifle and charge the Senate building later?

To do what, fight an armed insurrection? The same people who are too indifferent to call their legislators now are going to pick up a rifle and charge the Senate building later?

Individual states or a coalition might find success in resistance on a level that doesn’t include secession, but that’s probably it.

I am certainly hoping Texas is one of those states you mention and that maybe we should actually be putting a border fence up on northern borders right now. Unfortunately your premise is pretty much what I have thought as well.

You know….

… when this all blows up in every one’s face, and the survivors are looking around at the uncountable number of dead, I wonder what our “Free and Independent” press will admit to any of the blame?

Seven Percent Solution on October 8, 2009 at 10:40 PM

You are assuming they will be around to admit to anything. At some point even most of them will get sideways of the party line and have to go ………

I’m not going to argue that the media is not totally liberal but this is not 1990, the truth is out there for all to see. There comes a time when individual judgment must be questioned. I can’t blame the press for the foolishness from such a huge number of Americans.

I am in a running debate with my friend, a very intelligent person, about the motives and agenda of Obama- and more importantly the people who picked him, promoted him, and protected him- and how can we explain, as he put it, why the water is now running up hill.

My friend is a good man, a solid police detective and very, very bright economist. I was more a direct line of sight person, but willing to climb into the minds of the criminal in an attempt to understand their motives. Sometimes it was obvious. Sometimes I realized there was no motive beyond “because they could.”

At my website I’m offering a challenge, the same I gave him. Stop trying to understand what his happening by forcing a square peg into a round hole. Look at the problem differently. Water is running up hill, that is the new reality. We see the answer, the challenge is finding the formula that makes sense of it.
Is it arrogance? Stupidity? Malevolence? Or, as I have said before, are we inside a revolution? Much like the poor people in South America and Central America.

Here’s the site-

Has he said anything that has turned out to be true? Seriously, anything?

He has actually:
Early November 2008: We are only five days away from transforming America.

Barrack Hussein Obama - Peace be Unto Him. Praise His Holy Name. All Worship and Adoration be Unto Him. Give Him your worries, your burdens, our cares, your troubles, and He will give you Peace. Devote your life to him at all times, in all ways, with every thought, word, and deed, and he will save you - has special powers.

I have seen this with my own eyes, and I have heard the stories.

He has caste out demons.

He has made the rich poor and the poor rich.

He has walked on water, made fire appear in the sky, and parted the clouds.

He has parted the seas, and made the stars dance in the sky.

He has brought the dead back to life and made the living dead.

He has destroyed the once Great Nation, the USA, and weakened the military, putting US soldiers in greater danger, betraying them. He has made the world hate the USA more and strengthened their disrespect as well as rewarded and encouraged bad behavior among other nations and nefarious world leaders.

Hail the Messiah, the Savior of Mankind, the Lord of the Uniserve, the Articulate One, Mister Hope and Change, Mister “Yes, We Can!”

He is our Master, the Source of all Love, Peace, Compassiona, Mercy, and Prosperity.

All the deities and “Masters” from history, Krishna, Rama, Buddha, Jesus, etc., were mere fantasies. Barrack Hussein Obama - Peace be Unto Him. Praise His Holy Name. Worship Him as your Lord and Savior - is the Reality!

Obama relies on our discouragement, wishes for it, revels in it. All we can do is keep up the emails/letters/calls to our reps and senators, attend as many protest meetings as possible, fund organizations, keep informed, read, read, read and vote ‘em out in 2010! Please G-d! I just shot off an email to one of my uber-lefty U.S. Senators and decided not to be Miss Nice Gal anymore. Nothing…NO THING…will change her mind; and I can’t keep the anger under wraps one more day.

Just a little personal aside: you know how your spell check underlines a misspelling? I never “added” BHO into my dictionary so that each time his name is typed it comes up redlined.

What are the odds…..

That instead of the 2nd Coming of Jesus that Obama is actually the Twelfth Imam?

Breaking News: Obama given the Nobel Peace Prize. The nomination deadline was Feb 1, 2009, when he’d been in office less than a month.

RIGHT ON TRACK! Yeah, baby!

I predicted this jerkwad would make Carter look like a good President and he’s RIGHT ON TRACK!

I *****ing HATE being stuck with the curse of Cassandra.

I heard a guy on Laura Ingram’s show this morning talking about this. Not only had Obama only been in office for only 11 days when they nominated him for the prize, but he survived the next round of eliminations which happened in March – only about 80 days into his first term.

So, not only has he done very little (to this day) to merit the award, he had done even less at the time he was nominated (if you can imagine that).
