Video: Iran supporting Taliban in Afghanistan

posted at 12:55 pm on October 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

What was that about unclenched fists again? CBS reports that Iran has stepped up its cooperation with the Taliban in Afghanistan, in both money and weapons. However, the White House has muzzled the military from speaking about it:

Watch CBS News Videos Online

U.S. military officials have told CBS News that Iran is sending money and weapons onto the Afghan battlefield. But U.S. commanders are not allowed to comment publicly and it’s unclear to them what the U.S. strategy is for dealing with Iran’s increasingly deadly involvement.

The deadliest form of roadside bomb on the Iraqi battlefield – explosively formed penetrators (EFPs) – is now being found in Afghanistan.

Lethal armor piercing bombs that can slice through U.S. humvees are also an Iranian specialty.

More worrying still: U.S. intelligence believes Iran is supplying surface to air missiles to the Taliban – the very same weapon the U.S. supplied to the Afghan resistance to bring down the Russians.

Why does the White House want the military to keep quiet about Iranian connections to the Taliban? They want to keep enough political support in the US for direct talks with the mullahs. That support will evaporate if the military starts drawing clear connections between Tehran and the Taliban, especially with al-Qaeda as its ally in Pakistan.

This also puts to rest one of the silliest assertions of the war on terror, which is that Sunni and Shi’a radicals hate each other so much that they won’t partner with each other against the West. Shi’ite Iran has funded Hamas for years, which is primarily a Sunni radical group (Hezbollah is primarly Shi’ite). The Taliban are Sunni, as is the leadership of al-Qaeda, but they share a common enemy in the West, especially the US and Israel. Iran has every reason to support the Taliban and al-Qaeda in the fight against the NATO alliance as a means of weakening our position and strengthening the hands of Islamist radicals, no matter what sect they follow.

Iran sits at the nexus of radical Islamist terrorism, and has since its 1979 revolution. Obama may want to hush the military to keep that “secret,” but all it does is make the US look weak and ignorant. We should have pushed harder this summer to assist those in Iran who wanted freedom from the radical mullahs instead of giving the mullahs more legitimacy.

That said, Bush was a wimp, not a traitor.

MrScribbler on October 8, 2009 at 1:52 PM

That “wimp” spend every bit of political muscle to continue the war, and mount the insurgency that won freedom for Iraq.
He may have been weak in some areas (Monday morning quarterbacking), but he stood strong for years against a media and congress bent on stopping him. Very few men have been able to do the same lately.
I doubt you would find many active generals agreeing with you…mistakes, certainly, but wimp and weak, hardly.

borntoraisehogs on October 8, 2009 at 2:00 PM

Sadly, I’m finding this to be true, but the wrong type of talking. Remember Muslims are allowed to lie to infidels. Hey, maybe that’s why Obama lies so much?

MobileVideoEngineer on October 8, 2009 at 2:03 PM

I understand that most of what is happening is by design, however, you would think that the White House would be a little smarter about what they say. I mean come on, to say the Taliban is not a threat to us to try and justify the inaction or withdrawal from Afghanistan and then the crap today happens?

MobileVideoEngineer on October 8, 2009 at 1:51 PM

It is the same duplicity we’ve seen from The 0 silencing Sarkozy at the UN only to announce later a the G-20 Iran’s Qom facility.

Listen quite clearly, these people are not idiots. I’m here in Chicago, used to work some of the RE projects of Jarrett, Rezko & Obama when I was with Martin Nesbitt’s Co. Aegis Contract Services. They are sleazy, and just like the Habitat Co. housing projects failed by intent, so they could be developed for the Olympic Village, so the administration fails by design.

It is my honest opinion that we are in a race, between ousting the DNC leadership and Obama by 1/20/’13 or capitualization to an eco-authoritarian regime of fascism.

While it is encouraging that more are waking up to this, I feel we are still trailing by moer than a few car lengths. We cannot let off the gas now!

MB4 on October 8, 2009 at 2:02 PM

Well if you were following the Sibel Edmonds situation, we are probably giving them all kinds of support to keep them going. In the Edmonds case, higher ups were providing all kinds of classified info to Turkey via bribes, and from there that info makes its way to the Pakistani ISI for even more money, which is heavily involved in areas like Kashmir, and has had Taliban and Al Qaeda connections as well. The Pakistani ISI was also used to fund and train the Mujahadeen when we were propping them up against the Soviets.

This is somehow a shock? Iran basically owns the western Afghan city of Herat. They control most of the businesses, the radio and TV stations, they build the roads, etc.

To sit back and act surprised is the height of foolishness.

The “Soldier” they show removing the ordinance is wearing sneakers, a brown belt, and his BDU is not “pixilated”

SOCOM? CIA? FAKE?

Anyone else notice that?

DSchoen on October 8, 2009 at 3:02 PM

Since they attacked the Indian Embassy this morning in Kabul, it looks like they have the support of those “Kashmir Fighters” also. Wouldn’t those be Pakistanis? Doesn’t Osama Bin Laden have close ties to the Kashmir ???? I don’t know what to call them? Pakistan and India are fighting over Kashmir. Both Nuclear powers. It seems like Afghanistan is the center of gravity in the overseas contingency operation, GRIN. “AGAIN”.

Obviously you know nothing of Islam.

No actually i know a LOT about islam.

YOU just have no idea that there are all sorts of sects of islam and different levels of practice. For instance indonesia is the largest muslim population in the world.
The Asian islamic consciousness differs from the various arab kinds.

You just want to instigate them and radicalize them ALL!

Do you really think that they just attacked us out of the blue?

Are you still following the totally disproven line “they hate us for our freedom”?

If we weren’t over there intervening all the time nobody would have a problem with us.

This is what the non interventionism of the founding fathers is all about. Not creating any unecessary enemies.

I actually care very much, but this is the fallout and consequence of what happened last November.

When people voted for Turkmenbama, this is what they voted for whether they knew it or not. The truth about Zero was out there but peeps just don’t care…and still continue NOT to care. It’ll be too late when most get a clue.

I’m devastated, but I also sponsor our brave soldiers thru’ Soldiers Angels….

That’s Sweet, but the Obama Administration couldn’t even get the Olympic committee to engage with Chicago in 2016…just sayin they wanted the Olympics really bad…and besides don’t you remember from the campaign, Iran really isn’t that big a deal.

During the primary Berry said he would have us out of Afghanistan in 6 months. Well you wanted the job Berry and you got it! Don’t give our men and women in harm’s way this bullshit about who’s frickin war it is. If we’re going to be in that country, try not to make the mistakes we made in Nam. Let our guys do what ever it take to get the job done, even if that means killing everyone of those smelly bastard. Harsh, perhaps but giving the opportunity they would destroy this country and ever person in it. I bled in the shit-hole Vietnam and for what, politically Nothing!!
When winning the war is no longer the focus, our troops are f**k!

ED MORRISSEY: Why does the White House want the military to keep quiet about Iranian connections to the Taliban? They want to keep enough political support in the US for direct talks with the mullahs. That support will evaporate if the military starts drawing clear connections between Tehran and the Taliban, especially with al-Qaeda as its ally in Pakistan.

This doesn’t make sense Ed. If you want somebody to negotiate, you want to do that from a position of power, not weakness. If our public understood that Iran was supporting the Taliban (seriously, who doesn’t know already) I don’t think it would make a bit of difference… Obama has never looked for majority support of anything he has done.

No… I think the reason Obama tries to keep the lid on this, is that he wants to lose this war, and if our public knew the enemy, we would be up for the fight. If Obama can get our media to focus ONLY on how it is bad for the U.S., without naming any enemy and therefore any reason for this war, the USA public will lose heart. THAT is what Obama wants.

Danzo on October 8, 2009 at 6:32 PM

Winning or losing in Afganistan has come down to one thing: resolve.

Our enemy knows this. They are RESOLVED to destroy Israel et. al. That is why, despite their inferior numbers, inferior weaponry, inferior tactics and intelligence, they may just win, and if they do, they will show we didn’t have the will to stop fundamentalist Islam and terrorism.

If we bow out of Afganistan, we have bought a much longer and wider war, and we won’t have a choice but to have the resolve at some future time at a much greater cost. Their ideology is evil, and if we don’t stand against evil now, we are just putting off the inevitable.

We have the might, but it seems they have the stomach.

Either we pull our troops out of Afghanistan or we support them fully. I like the latter and it is time to drop those MOABS. The enhanced ones, I mean.

Iran MUST be punished and hit very hard. No half-measures. Half-measures get people killed.

I have never served in the military, but I can sure imagine what it must be like to be in such a dangerous place with a dithering idiot as a president.

The lives of these people literally hinge on what our unhinged president is doing.

Down with Obama!

Sherman1864 on October 8, 2009 at 10:37 PM

I could give one good reason why Obama doesn’t care, but it’d be called radical.

Rbastid on October 8, 2009 at 11:25 PM

One can only HOPE that crafty Obama is using the most brilliant sucker play in recent history, posing as a weak, incompetent moron, and thereby encouraging the enemy to get fatally cocky and show their deadly hands, and then strike them hard and from every conceivable angle until they are blisteringly and utterly crushed and reduced to such a pulverished state that they dare not respond, fearing annihilation should they even try.

Pardon me while I get my unicorn another bucket of rainbows.

So what explanation is there for someone who knowingly suppresses that knowledge?
Can you say treason?

Case in point, if you or I were to sell weapons to AQ or T reps, we’d be arrested and jailed very swiftly. Does that mean certain individuals currently holding higher office are above the law?
